Hello world. Do people take alot of risks with their characters? For example, if you run across a pool, do people just drink it empty and live with the consequences? How fast do people go to the lower levels and for the Chaos Orbs, is it only after days of RL playing to gather scrolls and potions against corruption or immediately when finding them? |

There are 2 approach: play ADOM as TB want (without backup save etc.) or playing saving, copying the save game and then take a lot of risk (you have however a backup of your character). If you play as TB want you cannot take risks and you must concentrate on your final goal: defeating chaos or become a chaos god. As for me I play rarely with savegame backup (especially when I try the eternium man quest). I've played thousands char and at least 100 have reached level 25 and 7 of them have reached 50. I've never ended the game because the only time I've defeated greater balor I was going to search the lever to close the chaos gate but I was so corrupted that I die ... sad end but it's life. However if you wait too much you take a great risk because after 90 days of game the corruption rate increase and then you can die like me.. and isn't fun. LELE_IV the Ancient Karmic Player |

Well, I usually take lot of risks when the character isn't very promising... If I get a character over lvl 30, then I drink every pool and atleast try to empty every vault (except greater undead at that point). And finishing the game isn't so hard, if you just get over lvl 40. But... I don't know how hard the winning is with a spellcaster, the closest what I've got with a spellcaster was a gnomish elementalist who died to the mana temple. I don't know if this is spoily, but something might come up so: Spoiler I usually start decending to CoC at lvl 20 or something, the go to casino, up from darkforge and to library. Then back to CoC, decent to the cat lord, kill him if I've killed cats, get the RotMC if not... haven't ever got it tho. Then up again, if I've got darkness and invisibility so I can clear out the bug temple... After that just quick rush to CoC, get all orbs except mana, back to surface, clear corruptions, take all the orbs with me, go to mana temple, take the last orb and then to D50. And btw; I've got no problems with corruption, just need to save khelly and clear the bug temple to get too much SoCRs. my best chars have been lv 19 and one of them got to the water temple and got the orb o' wet (the other died by locking himself in the dwarven mystic's room). usually i take waaay too many risks for my safe being, which might be why i don't do that good. i'm jsut not paitent enough to play slow and careful. as far as pools are concerned. i *never* drain them in one go. i'll take one sip and leave, maybe come back a while later and take another, etc etc. taht way i don't get lots of bad stuff. ivan.sourceforge.net |

I'll sometimes drain pools in one go, although if drinking from a pool made me sick or poisoned I'll wait until I've recovered before coming back. Spoiler Good stuff you can get from a pool:
Bad stuff you can get from a pool: cursing, dooming, sickness, poison and unnatural aging. There are other good and bad pool effects, but the ones I've listed are the ones I find most significant. Note that once you're very close to your god and have some way to cure sickness and poison (e.g. the appropriate herbs), unnatural aging is the only really nasty pool effect. So I'd say... if you don't have any source of free action, drain pools until you get the intrinsic. It will save you from being killed by a paralysing monster. If you have free action (even from an amulet), wait until you can cope with most of the bad pool effects. You should be able to manage this by the time you need the AoLS. Stop drinking when you have the AoLS and intrinsic free action. Unnatural aging complicates this strategy - if you're middle-aged or older, you may want to stay away from pools. |

Hmmmm my beginings in ADOM was very hard.... Hmmmm .... "How I can pickup this stupid tiny helmet Terinyo????" Heh what a suprise for me I found something... first encounter with this vilage:))))..... Lots of deaths... Lots of saiving.... (One my overcheated PC was a total cheat experiment). Check everything, and finally after few "save scuming" PC, I win without cheating... It's a great reward when you finsh.... I make only two backup save file.... First after created PC .... After death just start from begining. And ofkorz with Khelavester, but in this time it didn't crushed.... Once this PC about 12 level has crash game in shop when I just droped all nonpayed scrolls..... And lots of fear, about everything.... One weekend lots of fear and lots of fun..... And drink pools..... Only about 13 level, never early, the best just before Khelevester.... And who cares about resistant... Shoot to kill, not fight in melee... And very annoying intrinistic for true casters is "able to teleportation" "Insect, we care not for thee. Disturb us any we will extingwish thy weak candle of life" [Edited 1 time, last edit on 4/25/2002 at 05:05 (GMT -5) by BM] |

Ah, but if you've got "Control Teleportation" It can be very useful. Though, it almost never kicks in when you need it... Do Not Meddle in the Affairs of Dragons For you are Crunchy and Good with Ketchup. |

That's why it's a good idea to keep spare blink dog corpses in shops. All the bad effects from pools are reversable (bar teleportits however that's not all bad), however paralyzation resistance and wishes are almost invaluable. When i'm choosing wether to drink from a pool or not depends on how much i like the charactor and how much time i've spent on him. Generally if i find a pool really early i'll drink from it semi-kamekazi style in hopes of a wish. At about level 10 onwards the charactor is more valuable so i put it off until the char i strong enough to cope with the negative effects. DougyDougy - Dougy - DougyDougy |

I mostly avoid pools like the plague, which is what I usually get if I drink from them, until my character is stong enough to cope with the negative effects. Do Not Meddle in the Affairs of Dragons For you are Crunchy and Good with Ketchup. |

I usually make a note of pools, and drain them all when it's time to descend past Khelly if I haven't found an AOLS yet. But that time a char is usually strong enough to deal with the ill effects. Otherwise, I just ignore them. |

Hmmm "able to teleportation" for caster? Hmmm yes I know when you have teleport control (it's number one in ADOM) But I think about reading books and teleportation:) Try do it in other place than assasin guild;) "Insect, we care not for thee.
