I kind of gathered after reading some of Iridia's posts (especially to my story)

Male or female, we all just love ADOM

eL: Why do you ask? Is it out of curiosity, or will a person's gender influence what you think about their posts?

Ryan: Out of curiosity, what do you feel was particularly "feminine" about Iridia's posts?

For the record, I'm male. (I always name my ADOM characters Caladriel)

My story, for one. I've also read through her posts and most of her chars are female.

Iridia: We can't read anything into your ending up playing male NPCs, because there are hardly any female unique NPCs in ADOM. I can only think of six:

  • The tiny girl
  • The old crone
  • Blup's mum
  • The banshee
  • The oracle
  • The greater white unicorn (?)

(and none of the role-plays have seen any of them except the tiny girl.)

For what it's worth, I'm female. You could probably tell from my nickname.

eL: What do you mean by confusing? What is it that was confusing you?

I'm just wondering what impact a person's gender has. Does it change how one reacts to their posts?

Have any of you seen the movie "Boys Don't Cry"? (An truly upsetting movie with a horrific ending, made even more so by the fact that it is a true story) In it, a girl disguises herself so she can live like a boy.

To prepare for the part, the actress would get dressed and made up like a boy in real life. She claims people couldn't decide how to act towards her because they couldn't determine if she was a boy or a girl.

That was a horrendously fucked up movie.

I see what you're getting at. I could care less about gender myself. I just like to know stuff. I'm nosy by nature (that could be an R&B group name)

I think we probably want to know each other's gender because, when you talk to someone you haven't seen, you want to have a mental picture of them. It's easier if you know male/female. Nothing to do with discrimination really.

That's a good point.

I hadn't actually been thinking of discrimination so much as of different interpretations or a different feel of the message.

Most of my ADOM characters have been male, but this is mainly because of the strength bonus... you can pick up dex just by eating moss or bugs anyway.
Having just re-read that last sentence, i think I'm starting to question my own sanity

I'm male too, I also look a bit like Luke Skywalker of the movie Star Wars.

What was the ending like to "Boys Don't Cry" which made it so fucked up? It can't of been that bad can it?

I also like to know if I'm talking to male or female, some people like to talk differently to each gender - just one of them things I guess.

A girl dressed up as a guy to get girls. She became friends with a group of people and fell in love with a girl.

I haven't seen it in awhile so names are out of the question.

At the end, the guy/girl's friends find out that he is a she and gang rape her (YUMMY!) She also got shot in the end. It was sad and fucked up.

Re: Boys Don't Cry
Ryan: I hope you are being ironic with that comment regarding the rape. That is a really sick thing to say.

As for the story, I haven't seen the movie, but I had read the coverage of what happenned years before the film. She pretends to be a boy because of a sexual identity crisis, not "to get girls."

Apparently, she had been raped as a young girl. Maybe that led to it. Maybe she just couldn't fit into the stereotypes forced on women. Maybe it was the affection and attention she could get as a boy that she couldn't get, or trust, as a girl.

In any case, she was later beaten, raped and, some time afterward, killed by a couple men who had once claimed to be her friends. Why do you think that was?

YES I WAS!!

As I said I haven't seen that movie in a while. It's kinda fuzzy. That movie was too sick for me. Me, who watched Rocky Horror Picture Show 6 times back to back. Me, who has actually tried some of the stunts in Jackass before they were popular (made good money from it too.) And me, who is so socially bereft that I check the forums every thirty minutes when I'm not playing online games with unkown faces over the internet.

That movie was horrific. I may be deranged, illogical, eccentric, an asshole, and (possibly) insane, but I would NEVER do anything that horrific to someone (gangband and shoot and beat down etc.)
