If you sacrifice a cat on a altar is it considered killing it for the cat rule purpose?

Yaeh. The only way to "legally" kill a cat is a Wand of destruction AFAIk.

Or lead it over a trap that you didn't create

It is also possible to lead the cat into an alarm trap (even one you created) causing monsters in vicinity to attack poor pussycat. This could also be useful against spider factories.

I usually 'm'usic them (if I have the skill, great skill for this) and when they are tame enough, I position them between myself and a suitable murderous creature. Then it "sadly" gets killed while heroically defending me.

Somewhat spoily....

Spoiler
Other methods include chucking a potion of exchange at them (bless the potion first), or feeding them rats or giant rats to calm them down and eventually tame them. (Doesn't work on lions and tigers though.) You can also use spells like calm monster or slow monster to give you enough time to run away, or even use the unpopular Ventriloquism skill on them. It may only confuse for a turn or so, but thats usually enough to get a door betwwen you and them. (Remember felines can't open closed doors.) Cats killed in vortex explosions do not appear on kill lists, however cats killed in a door trap explosion _always_ appear on your kill list. IMO, this is a bug, but nevertheless, they do.

Nobody's mentioned the Darkness spell yet? Cats can't see in the dark, so (especially if you haven't hit them yet) they are likely not to follow you through the dark.

Darkness is not without disadvantages: there is no telling you won't run into another cat while running away...

Cats can't see in dark? Didn't know that, but I think they should be able to see in dark, they are cats after all

I think you can kill some cats without consequences cos you usually don't get long message about 'soul' or something after first kill...

Untrue--you see the message if your Perception is high enough, but a cat on your kill list gets the Cat Lord mad whether you've seen it or not.

Over hours of playing, a *lot* of cats have accumulated on almost all levels of the CoC (the ones I've explored, down to Khelavaster's level) for my gray elven wizard. I just slow them and scare them, and they'll hopefully not bother me for a while.

The goblin attacks the good dog. The good dog is slightly injured. The good dog lies on the ground and whimpers. You are ashamed by the wussiness of your companion. You attack the good dog and turn it into a mangled heap. You pick up the good dog corpse. You eat the good dog corpse. You feel wussy.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

I know its quite unusual, but i have been stuck in a tunnel between 2 cats a few times.

I mean, whats a guy to do? I never seem to have any POE when that happens either.Or any dead rats. (I generally just eat off the floor with high food-preservation chars)

digging, using music or just switching to coward untill one of them gets bored and you can switch positions are common methods

And of course teleportation, or ventriloquism to confuse them. Another far riskier method is to attack one of them with a weak weapon and try to get it down to low hp so that it'll panic and run away (or berserk and kill itself). This is obviously a desperate tactic.

I know there are many tricks to get around them, but i never seem to have the means. This generally happens with my Fighter chars, and i generally either try Soirana's Coward tactic or Darren's Cripple tactic, but to no avail.

Its not a huge problem for me, its just happened a few times in the past 5 or so years.
