Are you sick of losing your nicely kicking ass charecters along with all their bounty of godly items and weapons maybe never to find the same ones again?? Heres the best tip ever, it took me a whole year of Adom'ing befor i worked this little trick out, ok here goes After levling or finding somthing you wanna keep heres what you do Save your game... 1:go into your adom folder Adom_dat 2:go to Savedg 3:Copy your charecter file and paste it into a new folder (you cant paste 2 of the same charecters saves in the same folder) 4:when the untimly room full of antcient water dragons pop up and wash you away or whatever other grim fate your charecter might meet ITS NOT OVER FOR THE LAD, copy the charecter file from the newfolder you made and paste it back into the saveg folder and away you go again from right where you had saved last... Is this the biggest spoiler next to the wand of wishing or wat?? The scary thing is i thourght it up on my own befor i knew i was even spoiling the game, but i guess its kool, not as bad as the wand of wishing. *wish for full red dragon plate mail* |

Yeah, well known though. Just note that it is considered cheating as it involve intervention from outside the game. It also makes you sloppy if you do it too much as you tend to take unnessesary risks. Good way to experiment with things though. Also note that such cheated characters should not be sent to the HoF. Other than that have fun. Jan Erik Mydland HoF admin |

It isn't really that difficult to figure out, no :) I once did that myself for a short while, then stopped, and never regretted stopping. This is what is called "savescumming", isn't it? Anyway, why is the wand of wishing considered a spoiler here? Is there a guaranteed one I didn't know about?! o_O (I've never ever found one, but I don't think finding one would spoil the game for me. On the contrary! :) You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? BTW I notice one msg in HOF news "Removed "Heir" from the list, it was massively save scummed and had it's save count edited to cover it up (real count was 1252)." So, I have two questions about HOF: 1) How do you know "real count" (and is it realy real? :)) AFAIK number of saves doesn't have effect on final score. 2) When game become "massively save scummed"? On first place there is PC with 46 saves - IMHO it is also to much. |

Silfir: I think what 6FeeT was referring to is a wand of wishing that has a million charges, this can be created by hexaediting the game files while playing (I'm not gonna tell you how to do it, you'll have to find out that by yourself) "I don't know what World War 3 will be fought with, but I know World War 4 with be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein |

46 saves isn't altogether impossible; I myself often play (completely legit and non-savescummed) games between bits of homework. A game that lasts till level 20 might have been saved ten to fifteen times, when I quit to do the next problem. Archmage victories and other strategies that use lots of real-time (such as SmC scumming for an AoLS or other necessary item) can also produce lots of saves. Of course, if the number is thousands rather than dozens, I do begin to suspect save-scumming. Hey Jan--how *did* you know the real number of saves in that game? Die Gedanken sind Frei |

I guess the amount of saved time affect the final score in such a way that, if the flg file was not edited in any other way than changing saved times, he can re-calculated it out using some sort of file reader (given by the Creator, maybe.) >Hey Jan--how *did* you know the real number of saves in that game? That's what I want to know. About two years ago I made simple test - end game with 12 saves, then reload it, increase save count at about 50 and end game again. Score was the same. >46 saves isn't altogether impossible But it is to much for HOF. We nether know, for what he spend this saves - simply to have some rest, or to get five wishes from one pool. Maybe real count of saves is not 46, but 4634 - how could we know? BTW how many wishes PC must use to get SP=10000 and grandmastery in all weapon skills? |

It totally depends on how someone lives. If he/she has lots of free time, it would be less saves, and if he/she hasn't so much time or doesn't want to play much in a day, it would be more saves. I personally think that 46 is very normal. And apart from the stupid cheaters who forget their wand of wishing(x^n charges) on their character, there's no way that one can truly find out if someone savescums or not. So just get on with *your* game/life and think of finishing it right for yourself, instead of being suspicious of how people finished *their* game. It's like real life. Imagine an Avatar ending, with million-WoWi involved. And then - imagine a vile cheater dropping it next to Andy, or even into his head dealing a few pts of damage after using several dozens for 'speed'. That cheater looks at his char in top positions of HoF and chuckles evilly. BTW, I liked the 'Heir'. A nice time count :) Those 6 days were surely something unnormal, but, mayhap, with Worn Boots in place from the very beginning, no ToHK visiting etc. (like in minimalist challenge), it *is* possible to come close to something like 15 days? In addition - I wonder what was written in Russian there. Jan, there are some encoding problems in HoF and forum, making Russian characters garble. Ubi patria ibi bene! |

Quite simple realy, the guy posted on a Russian ADOM forum boasting about how he had tricked me. One of the other users there alerted be about it. I also double checked by running his post though babelfish a few times. Granted it gives a far from acurate translation but I think I got the gist of it. The was doing a "blitz" game so rather than play safe in the normal way he rushed in saving the game at every turn in dangerous spots and loaded if he got killed. The total "retention" was mentioned as well as that it was changed for "sucessfull verification in the HoF". Yeah, Russian don't look too good here, either does Japanese or whatever else doesn't use the latin alphabet. If you run it though Babelfish it can still translate it though. The Russian blurp at the end there (Ķåķąāčęó įóšęóåā!) translated as "I hate bourgeois!" Jan Erik Mydland HoF admin |

In archmage game 46 saves is nothing. IIRC with my archmage I got some 50+ saves playing on-off in short blocks of time as I do have a full-day job and other things to do as well. Sytytä toiselle tuli ja hän pysyy lämpimänä jonkin aikaa. Sytytä hänet palamaan ja hän pysyy lämpimänä loppuelämänsä. |

I don’t want to turn the HOF forums into my own personal soapbox, but some comments were posted recently that really angered me. Maniac suggests that my character, who currently occupies the number 1 spot in the HOF, ought to be removed for having saved the game 46 times. This is insulting for several reasons: (1.) I have played ADOM for years and I wanted a new challenge – to break new ground and to set a whole new standard for this game. I didn’t just want to be number one, I wanted to *dominate* the number one position. Achieving a score that is three times greater than the next highest score is, in my opinion, exactly that – domination! I also wanted to push the limits of character development – and maxing out all stats including XP certainly fulfils that objective. Yes, obviously it’s just a game. But I worked very hard to earn that number 1 spot. And to have someone demand the removal of my character without even bothering to investigate or validate their demands really pisses me off! (2.) My character was the only one singled out for removal, even though other characters are characterised by more saved games than mine. So I really have to wonder whether this is about savescumming at all, or whether Maniac is jealous of my number one spot. (3.) No suggestions were made for what ought to constitute a “fair” saved game standard. OK, so if saving the game 46 times is too much, then what do you think is fair? It is only logical (and certainly only constructive) to clarify what standards you are judging my character against. Again, it makes me wonder what the real motive is behind his demands. To Maniac and anyone else who doubts the validity of my character who currently dominates the HOF: he is absolutely, 100% non-save-scummed. And if you think that saving the game 46 times is a lot, then try doing what I did while juggling real world stuff like running my own company, maintaining an active lifestyle, and enjoying personal relationships! For those who don’t know, the character that is currently in the number one spot is an archmage. Archmages are characters that can book-cast wish. Developing an archmage takes tons of time because you need to obtain enough PP to cast wish from the book – and even on silvernight/darknight that requires a lot of PP! It is a lot easier to do in v1.1 thanks to the right talents, but it still isn’t easy. However, the part that *really* takes up a lot of time is then casting thousands (and I do mean *thousands*) of wishes to max out all stats. To answer your question Maniac, it actually doesn’t take that many wishes to get all weapon skills to grandmastery (a couple of hundred or so – provided your learning is high). But getting your speed and HPs to 10000 is incredibly tedious! Blessed potions of ultra healing raise your HP total by 1-3 points (if I recall correctly) when you are fully healed. That equates to 2 HPs on average. Which means you will need approximately 4000-5000 potions. And you will get (again, if I recall correctly) 2 potions on average from each wish. Which equates to 2000-2500 wishes. And that’s just for your HPs! See how long it takes you to type “potions of ultra healing” 2000-2500 times! (no, I didn’t using ADOMbot either!) For those who continue to doubt my achievements, I still have the savegame file from when I saved my game right at the end. While it doesn’t really prove that I didn’t scavecum, it certainly does prove that I never saved my game more than 46 times. |

Gozer: you are quite right. Aiming for archmage does take an absolutely insane amount of work and time, especially when one is also trying to handle work and personal life. My archmage, even if it was much less impressive than yours, took IIRC more than 50 saves in all playing on and off, mostly in short blocks of time. I was also worried of ADOM crashing and wasting all that hard work so I did make frequent backups of the save in case the game crashed. And indeed, wishing for those hundreds of !oUH and !oSpeed in tedious as hell. I guess Maniac is just jealous as well. I'd say in one count my archmage is more impressive than Gozer's. Since I'm playing the 1.0.0 version due to the überjackal bug I couldn't raise my weapon skills to max easily (wishing for weapon marks in 1.0.0 only gives a pathetic 1 point in each weapon skill) I had to do it the hard way - by killing loads of monsters. Fortunately killing one extremely experienced ancient blue dragon (after killing some 5000+ of them) gives some 100 weapon skill points so it wasn't too bad (though at this stage they hit like a ton of bricks). Still, raising all melee weapon skills (including unarmed) to grand mastery in this way is quite impressive. I couldn't be bothered to raise all missile skills to GM, though, as I was getting bored stiff with that. Oh, and I also mostly raised all stats to 99 by scumming for stat potions in the BDC. Totally. Number of save counts really depend on playing style. I save quite a bit as safeguards against crashes. In addition, while I'm doing something repetitive (like, pickpocketing/killing gremlins) to find a wish or something I can easily load the game, kill 1-200 and then save again, bored. Personally I find the game gets more fun when I save and just back into Real Life whenever I've accomplished something. I also think it's safer, as fatigue after sitting 4 hours in front of the game can really lead to stupid mistakes. I also find that I will play more and more recklessly as time passes on. So for me, I save quite a bit on my games. From the HoF: Graakh - winner - 34 saves. Mulaia - winner - 17 saves. Naarz - winner - 15 saves. The first is a regular win, no ultra. And I still saved 34 times. Next two were even faster, Naarz just rushed thru the game without doing a lot of optional quests (didn't even do BDC). So 46 for archmage is not a lot at all. I would probably have spent well over 100 saves for that. Cheaters on the HoF - whats the point? I wonder about the children that can find pleasure in looking at their character on the list, and know to themselves "I cheated to get there". Bah. Even lying about their game in the "Story" bit. Lying about a bleedin game. Hah. Well, about time I made a hurthling priest into a hero. I was thinking of going evil with him, which is somewhat tricky... lost one promising to bugcave somehow, have to start a new one now... |

Thanks for the vote of confidence The Real J. And, yes, I totally agree that earning multiple grandmastery the hard way is definitely superior to just wishing for it in v1.1! One of these days I will seriously tackle Eterniun Man. Until then, my ADOM addiction has been well satiated! |

Yes, I've seen their thread about this char. Main objective of Heir's creator was to prove that "HoF is shit". And one more thing - he savescummed not only deaths, wishes, pickaxe from a single dwarf etc., etc., etc., ad infinitum, but even HP loss - in order to not to waste time for recovery :) I honestly admire his patience. He said he killed his first balor on D:50 for a real-time day - one save game in half an hour - rest were reloads. %) Ubi patria ibi bene! |

I'm not jealeous. But now first place in HOF is totaly closed 4 players, who simply solve the game - now that's realy bad. Make new HOF for "challenge games of all types" - and post there Gozer and Slash, and others, who made something incredible in Adom. That will solve problem with "savescuuming for highscore". I don't care about myself - nether tryed to get highscore, but think about other players, who will go to HOF, and sow at first place PC, who simply spend a lot of time 4 wishes, and took first place. |

Jan Erik, the new gray elven wizard winner named Eligor you recently validated has a strangely high savecount, about 350. I'm suspicious... Could you check that out? |
||
Gozer Unregistered user |
Maniac - I totally disagree. My score can be beaten - in fact, I have been giving some thought to smashing my own record. If you just want to solve the game then go for it and have fun! But IMHO, forums like the HOF are there to see who is the best - that is the whole point of having a ranking system. Before I took first place there was someone there before me and someone there before them, etc. etc. Someone has to be first - and I've just set the bar higher than anyone else. Someday, someone will beat me. I would also like to add that achieving that score involved much more than simply spending a lot of time on wishes. Firstly I had to *earn* that ability. Secondly, there are other archmages in the HOF with much lower scores than me. You can't just wish your way to number one! You need to plan and execute a strategy. And bear in mind that even for an all-powerful archmage it is very easy to die to a single mistake (like forgetting to equip an AOLS when taking on level 100+ GM or being crushed due to Strength of Atlas wearing off). |
||
Jan Erik Administrator Last page view: 9 days, 4 hours, 8 minutes and 13 seconds ago. |
Echo: It is a high count, but that alone does not nessesarily mean save scumming. Some people play only a few minutes each day, some a extremely paranoid about power failures or system crashes and backs up often and so on. Anyway I can keep an eye out, but I have no magic "save scumming detector", if nothing in the FLG "leap out" or someone "confess" then save scumming is unfrotunately near impossible prove. I could institute a "max number of saves" rule, but then people could simply edit the save count like was done with "Heir" and we'd be back to square one. We can never stop a determined cheater anyway, and if anyting getting too "witch hunty" will only encourage more people to try to "beat the system" as it where. So my basic policy remains to simply implore people to be honest and asume everyonen is innocent untill "proven" guilty. Jan Erik Mydland HoF admin |

I'm playing the win-beta version. There's a bug I occasionally encounter: auto-save each turn (or so). I don't encounter it often, but it appears to be area-related. In my latest game I got the bug when back-tracking through the bunny-level. The bug would recur everytime I entered the level. That means whenever I enter that level, there's a minimum of 1 save (teleport from stairs to stairs). I must have gotten some 12 saves or so, until I realised that the bug is area-dependant. Just to chime in and say, "Many saves can be due to bugs, also." |

FYI: When I was talking about babelfish I mean: http://babelfish.altavista.com/ You can use it to translate stuff. The translation is rough and usualy has horrible grammar, but you can usualy make out enough to figure out what is written. As for babel haveing no translation that is not suprising. Babel is simply an old name for the city known as Babylon. It's connection to language have to do with the old christian/Jewish myth about the Tower of Babel, where the storry goes that God cursed the then unified human race with different languages in order to twart theyr project of building a tower that would reach into heaven...
