My current winning char (gnome wizard) is aiming to become an Archmage (that would be my second one). For that piles one needs piles of wands to drain. My char is lucky to have a wand shop in CoC (plus bookshop in PC that might yield a spellbook of wish). I'm thinking of buying out the wand shop numerous times (using BDC and casino to get the money) and thus accumulate a huge stockpile of wands.

I was also thinking of the possibility of finding a WoWi in the shop. It would probably be extremely unlikely, but possible (since bookshops can also have spellbooks of wish). Any estimates on how likely a WoWi would be ?

Also, currently the char is roaming the ID in search of stuff (potions of booze, other useful potions and various wands). ATM the char is somewhere around ID156 but the plan is to descend to around ID200 and spend some time there. In my earlier archmage attempt I recall finding some WoWi and even a spellbook of wish there. Does anyone know what would be the best depth for finding WoWi, RoDS or spellbooks of wish in ID ? Also, potions of exchange (for ring-dipping later on) would be welcome.

It would really depend on the levle the shop is on (I think anyway). If it's on around the CoC:2, good luck trying to find anything. I would keep buying out the wand shop, and if need be yeah go down in ID. I dunno what WoWi RoDS or books of wish drop rate are at what spots, so can't help you there. PoRC could work also, get take some worthless ones assuming you have one of the artifacts.

obtaining RoDS using numerous potions of exchange is nearly impossible imho, the odds are very low.
and always mind that PoRC is bad 4 your health. if it explodes during the polymorph u'll take 100-200 damage and ~5 corrupts. the odds 4 this are low too, but it really tends 2 happen.

general danger levels for items:

http://www.geocities.com/adombot/items.txt (i had more user friendly page but can't found at moment)
RoDS-level8
WoWi-level 15
don't remember for speelbook of wish
page above states odds are even at level one, but i recall diferent information from other source. but since i'm not a fan of wizards i might be wrong.

cat lordlod: you can abuse shop even at CoC 2 after reading (and maybe writing) numerous scrolls of danger

to funktional key: numerous RoDS have been obtained many times. odds maybe low, but having 19 RoDS is very nice at least. the question is just where to dip...
and IMHO that works beeter then raw chaos. one ring plus the curuptions --- bad deal.

in general there two teories about item generation:
one says what the question is simple item can or can't be generated so odds are best on
minimum level item is generated. example: gremlin bomb at d8.
another says that with high danger level high danger level things increase their chances. so deeper you go better it's works (mean both just finding and abusing potions of exchange).

from my experience second souns better. but who knows...

IIRC the wand shop was relatively deep in CoC, after DH unless I misremember it very badly. Even if no WoWi was spawned the wand shop is a great help in aiming for archmage. Just buy out the shop numerous times (money can be obtained from BDC+Casino), uncurse the lot and once the char has several thousand wands drain the lot at once.

What was the relation of dungeon level/danger level in the ID ? Was it danger level=dungeon level or dungeon level divided by some constant value ? Around ID200 things are not so bad for a CLV50 char with speed 200+, all stats maxed, every available skill at 100 and sting/needle-combo with dagger skill at level 12. Though at that level one encouters relatively often emperor liches (fireball is your friend), ancient dragons of various kinds (even karmics, but death ray makes short work of them) and greater molochs (lightning ball or magic missile at eff. 120+).

Oh, and I know about ring-dipping with !oEx to get lots of RoDS. My previous archmage used that trick to get lots of RoDS (some 200+ IIRC). It needed absolutely piles of !oEx, though.

In my Archmage attempt, I found spellbooks of wish in the dragon caves. Course.......they started blowing everything up.

PeanutGod: same here. In my (so far) only succesful Archmage game I found IIRC a grand total of 5 spellbooks of wish: one from the library, one from a bookshop and three from BDC. So I could try BDC-scumming again. Using speed and wand of death (I have one with some 120+ charges) I probably could kill them before they had the chance of incinerating those books. And if I scummed the level with ordinary blue dragons (instead of ancients) using invisibility that would also lessen the chance of losing books. I presume the danger level of that level may be too low, but that could be fixed with some scrolls of danger.

Speaking of which, how much does one scroll of danger raise the danger level ? I presume the change is permanent in a permanent level like the BDC ?

just noticed we ar not in spoilers.

anyway danger level in ID is smthing like curent level/3 so id200 is abot danger lv 66.

scrolls of danger work smthing like:
1d2 2d2 3d2 depending B,U,C status

i'm still missing couple of points:

why you are not using guaranteed for wizards wishbook from library

and if you are lv50 wizard with all stats maxed isn't this archmage already?

I do have the spellbook from library stashed away so getting another is not strictly necessary. It would be useful, however, as a backup in case the library one is lost (i.e. destroyed). Plus, if I found another wishbook I could use one of them to learn relatively much of wish spell (thus reducing the need for PP) and save the other for bookcasting

And no, the char is not an archmage yet. Not even near. I'd estimate bookcasting wish would require at least some 7000-8000 PP, probably more. Remember this is 1.0.0 with no bookcasting talents available and the char is neutral, so no help from spoily time either.

And I'm not going to rate this char archmage until I've at least GM'ed all melee weapon skills (preferably missile weapon skills as well). Some other things I'd like to have are:
-At least 11000 HP, PP and speed (IIRC Gozer's Archmage had such)
-At least 10000 blue dragons, 5000 ancient blue dragons and 1000 greater molochs in kill list.

This way I wouldn't feel so puny compared to the mighty Gozer (or whoever it was who had that insanely powerful Archmage).

I don't quite know why you are using 1.0.0. If you do get some extra books, I would recommend doing some regular casting or wish, to get some more hp or mana. Killing 10000 blue dragons... yowza. Yeah, Gozers archmage was champ. Also, do you have any items that up TO, WI, or MA? Those would help, because they can't get lowered. And remember, this is not spoily.

This is really all very very spoily stuff, so I'm putting my answers in some spoily text:

Spoiler
Firstly, spellbooks of wish are danger level 1 like all other spellbooks. You can find them anywhere. Potions of Exchange may eventually get you what you want, or you could just scum the first few levels of the ID. Blue dragon caves tend to work well though since the dragons drop so much loot.

Secondly, wands of wishing are danger level 15, so if that wand shop is on D15 or below then you have a very good chance of getting a few glowing wands from there.

Thirdly, don't forget that you can get an extra 20% PP from wearing any armour with the "of power" suffix.

Cat lord lord: I'm using 1.0.0 because of the übermonster bug in 1.1.x. You may not agree but I consider it either a bug or some very badly thought out feature.

Darren Grey: this may be spoily so...

Spoiler

So all spellbooks are danger level 1 ? In that case it doesn't matter what danger level one has, only the amount of spellbooks. If enough spellbooks are generated eventually a wish book should be generated. I guess it's back to buying out that bookshop then...

I'm pretty sure the wand shop was below D15, though I'm not 100% certain. I'm pretty sure it was below DH and IIRC DH was around D13. If it's not then scrolls of danger should fix that problem.

And I know about the "of power" armor. In my Archmage game I used that to get some extra PP (in addition to using mana battery to lower the cost of bookcasting) in the beginning of Archmageing.

Yeah, ubermonster bug is evil. Killed my archer. Does it not exist in 1.0.0 or just nowhere near as much? I would reccommend dipping wands in PoRC. I think they come out with a random number of charges. And you can get them easily.

Cat Lord Lord: Ûbermonster bug is not present in 1.0.0. The monsters DO get tougher the more you kill them just like 1.1.x but the increase in difficulty is much less severe and it takes a lot of killing before one meets e.g. superjackals.

Gozer: Thanks. Lately I've been scumming the wand shop (in D24) buying it out several times over. Money can be gained from the BDC and Casino. So far no WoWi has shown up and no luck learning Wish from WoWo either so far.

Once I have some 5000-6000 or so wands it is time for wand emptying. That should be enough to gain enough PP to start the wish engine going with mana battery and some extra help.

Yee-hah ! I found a Spellbook of Wish in the PC4 bookshop after buying it out a couple of times ! I even managed to read the book thrice without it disappearing. Now I have two books to spare.

The char has been scumming the BDC for a fair while now. I did even get the mana battery corruption and drained, recharged and drained again the wands I had stashed away. Now the char has a little under 6000 PP and next stop is BDC again. I have been hunting Ancient Blues in BDC4 by using death ray. So, looking good so far...

Woo-hoo ! A new Archmage is born ! My char did a deep ID scumming session (diving down to 401 and spending a little quality time there before ascending again) and then bought out the wand shop numerous times, buying about 2000 wands in total. I did use a bunch of RoDS and the money duplication trick to avoid having to pop down to casino to replenish my money supply. Finally I collected the rest of the wands I'd been storing, got the mana battery corruption and emptied the lot. I got to over 9500 without power armor equipped. I also

Spoiler
used my remaining potions of booze, boost mana and mana plus scrolls of charging to repeatedly charge and drain one blessed wand.

Next stop, I think, is getting some more AoLS with my remaining RoDS (just in case), collecting some food (pile of blessed stoma), getting rid of excess weight (to avoid going splat when SoA runs out) and getting to wishing round.

One question: is there some way of automating the boring part, namely waiting in wilderness for PP recharge (eating every now and then to avoid starvation) and typing the wishes. "potions of ultra healing" is dreadfully boring when typed several hundred times. I'm playing Linux version 1.0.0.

I would say you should pray, because then you don't have to wait as long. Just sack alot at altars. Also, I think there is a way to open it in notepad to have your person keep typing Z W Potions of Ultra Healing (Z for cast, W for spell, and PoUH for them). I don't know how to do this but someone else might.
