Contest on Dia De Los Muertos: -Intro- Lots of powerful heroes come to fight for or against chaos in Ancardia. You are not one of them, you come seeking knowledge. At home you had only one dream to be a famous necromancer, you picked some basics from old books in libraries and trained yourself a bit ib lical cemetary. But it was very clear you needed master to guide your progress. All efforts gave one name - Nonnak, master necromancer, located in mystical valley of Ancardia. After you passed roads full of bandits and snow littered mountain passes you reached the secret valley. It didn't took long to find out that Nonnak has enclosed himself in dwarven graveyard in state of... you wouldn't call that madness, more chaos incursion into his mind. Maybe if you close the gate, he will be able teach you. Maybe by travelling down you will become powerful enough on your own. Good luck. -The Contest- The Challenge rules: -Thou will be necromancer. -Thou will respect your master - in practice that means Nonnak must stay alive. That probably will cause some problems with dwarves. - -Thou shall take druid's quest, cause any magic is intresting, dark one especially -Thou will not be a troll. Healing rate is one reason, others will be given bellow. If you feel smart you can change race mask in adom files. Or you can simply rerol if you get the troll. -Non roleplay rules- The character will be generated on 2007 11 01. (Participants can set the computer clock back if they have reasons. I will do that for example, as on November th first I will be far away from my computer. Do not start playing before 11 01.) The character is random in gender, race (except troll part) and opening questions. No, you can't fix your dark elf farmer with pumping toughness due to good knowledge of questions. This is a honourable challenge. So no savescumming. You get one try. Take whichever birthsign you get, take the stats, take the starting items. And if you die, well, note your score and submit your history of your deeds. Reviving chars due to power, system, program failures are considered to be sad reality. Personally I crash a couple times in each game. -Ranking- Regular ending is ranked better than special ones. Regular winners are ranked by character level. The lower it is at moment of exit the better score is. This is most serious reason to leave trolls out. -Antiscuming meassures- There was lot of nonsense on scumming topic on this forum recently. I suppose ones who doesn’t want listen to stories of thousands killed gremlins or endless stairwalks are probably right. So some extra rules will be applied: Wish engines are not allowed. This means no book casting wish, no wishing for potions of exchange. You can transmute stacks of rings, 19 wishes is really more then enough. Piety(and any over for that case) overflow is not allowed. Dragon gold doubling is not allowed. Using Casino money to train stats via Garth, buy off shops is not allowed. You can nail your crowning with that cash or purchase goods inside Casino shop. Intentional stat manipulation with sickness, starvation is not allowed. Corruptions, hurthlings wearing shoes and things like that are okay. Ring of weakness is sort of marginal. It is okay if you want to rise you necro’s strength, but if you start drinking cursed potions of exchange it will be considered excessive scumming. Smithing, mining and herb farming are not limited in any way. If you like getting enough stoma for fourth precrown go ahead. Intentional breeding of stuff is not in vein of challenge (necromancer shouldn’t help life to flourish…) In some cases – blink dogs, big room taming – it is considered to be sad reality. In other cases – gremlin bomb – it is forbidden. Access to Infinite Dungeon is limited. One reason is getting spelbook of healing spells are quite important and should not be eased. Other it is sort of funny challenge, not based on someone’s patience. Limited access means: you can visit it on three ocasions - going for chaos sceptre, going for filk and Going down: you do not need to go ironman style. reasonable exploration is welcomed, waiting for breeders to spawn not. Going up: if that is a choice of life and death (bleeding low on hp elf necro and room full of nasties...) you might temporally go down for recovery. It is not designed as suicide mission. In case you fail on rules but don't feel like committing suicide - save immediately and post circumstances and character dump on discussion thread. We will try to work this out. -This Thread- Is where you list your characters, and edit the posts accordingly. One post per person, use edit function. Yes, to edit you have to become a member of the forums. Sad reality. Rules also may be discussed here. before it is told discusion is over. Just put the characters details here, edit as it progresses. Sorry for my english anyway. p.s. we still got two weeks left so rules might be edited. Tell me if you think I have pushed the screws to tight. Good luck in gravedigging and slavemaking. A root is a flower that disdains fame. What does "Access to infinite dungeon is limited" mean? Do you mean that you can't enter it unless it's for the Sceptre of Chaos, and even then you are disallowed from turning back unless you turn back all the way? Also, about Dragon Gold Doubling: Am I right in the assumption that it is only forbidden to drop gold in front of a dragon so he picks it up? I mean, if you clear a dragon tension room, it's practically impossible to prevent the dragons from picking up the gold dropped by other dead dragons... You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? (123456789) 4 Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! |

1 question fixed 2 yes, you are right. dragons dealing with other dragons gold is their own business, not yours. And that usually does not lead to ridiculous amount of gold anyway. Silfir, the rule you proposed can still be abused. If you meet 30 dragons and the first one drops 100 gold pieces (I don't remember what's the population of dragon vaults and how much they drop), and let 20 dragons pick it up and die, you get 50000000 gold. |

Well I shall be hoping for a candle born hobbit wearing a cursed ring of djinni summoning (presumably not actually possible due to danger level at generation???) Probably end up with a dragon born dark elf toting a handy tract of chaos and a 1d4-2 dagger. I cant wait to edit this post with the real PC... |

My my, glad to see I've returned to the forums in time for another challenge (sorry for the absence by the way - had a lot of house moving trouble). Er, though should I point out that the 1st of November is actually a holy day? (All Saints Day to be precise - the silly associations of Hallowe'en are more a matter of modern culture than anything evil to do with the date) Not that it matters, it's good to have some sort of theme to the challenge. welcome back. about a day: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dia_de_los_muertos it depends on your cultural area, I think. In my country it is day dedicated to dead. All saints and stuff about them is only late addition on Christianity. It is actually quite messy. 10 years ago it looked like 10.31 is a day you go to cemetery and remember your dead relatives and 11.01 is holy day. nowadays it looks like 10.31 is hallowen, 11.01 day of dead and 11.02 holy day. But that is just my stupid country. november 1st has some traditional connection with dead guys. A root is a flower that disdains fame. Kahlil Gibran(1883-1931) |

Same here - November 1st is the Day of the Dead in my country. Nobody ever calls it "All saints", except for the Church. Even the ultra-devout catholics refer to it as the "Dead's holy day". I don't see why not. We've got to allow some stuff. Otherwise we could just as well forbid the use of morgia... You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Am I to understand that if you read a scroll of education and it gives you the Healing skill, you are then disqualified? "As for me, I feel priveleged to be among the only species able to make scientific inquiries." -unknown "Be sure to keep your distance if you don't have resistance." -DG |

if my first attempt to explain wasn't clear enough: if you take druids quest at Terinyo, you can do with scrolls/potions of education whatever you want. Including selfeducation by using magic writing sets. if you take carpenter's quest easieng your start, when yes scrolls/potions of education become deadly game. You can choose:) A root is a flower that disdains fame. Kahlil Gibran(1883-1931) |

Darren Grey Registered user Last page view: 4450 days, 5 hours, 44 minutes and 11 seconds ago. |
Uh, what? You've confused me more now... I thought you said no healing skill allowed? If you take carpenter quest you get Healing skill. What difference would scrolls of education make after that? Surely you should be immediately disqualified? If you take druids quest you don't get healing skill, but later use of scrolls of education could curse you with it. I would have thought the only option in the game is take the druid's quest and don't reads any SoEds (though I suppose you could gamble with them). do you feel difrence between GETTING the guest and COMPLETING it? Actually even completing carpenter's quest does not grant healing (if you kill him). the whole intention was to deny fact you must get healing or die early. necro's where choosed because thay are spellcaster without healing(easiest variant. IMHO). november 1st, cause it suits necros as well. A root is a flower that disdains fame. Kahlil Gibran(1883-1931) |

If my position on healing is too complicated it can me changed to one of following: 1. Chars must choose druid's quest. Healing per se is not forbidden. 2.Alternatively - Chars cannot have healing skill at any moment of game. hope that helps A root is a flower that disdains fame. Kahlil Gibran(1883-1931) |

vogonpoet Registered user Last page view: 5167 days, 13 hours, 14 minutes and 55 seconds ago. |
Hang on, it wasn't that complicated, and I liked it the way it was: Chat to village elder: PROS: [1] Gain access to carpenter (feel free to save him if you feel like it, cheaper food, and although you probably started off with a spellbook of frostbolt, why use magic when you can use 20 logs to build a bridge??). [2] Gain access to being (h)ealed 7 times, but (l)earning Healing skill is forbidden. CONS: Learning Healing skill by other means also forbiddden, SoEducation potentially lethal. Chat to druid: PROS: Feel free to read whatever you want whenever you want. CONS: You don't get the chance to get healed 7 times. ********************************* Personally, I suspect that during a normal game, the times when I am most in need of HP I am not normally standing in level 4 of VD, and I don't have the patience to get slaves to attack him and run away so I can lead the healer to places of greater danger where his healing is more useful, so I will be choosing the druids quest and the (a no brainer surely) Healty talent. I still anticipate very early death though :) |

If you ask me, I'd not allow the ID at all except for Filk and the sceptre. You can gain your first levels in the druid dungeon with relative ease. I'd only allow ID access in the early game for those that started with a tract of chaos. It'd offer some compensation for being raped by the RNG. You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? I think for clarity you can just make the rule "Characters must choose the druids quest". Gameplay reason obvious, no early healing. This also takes away the possibility of Jharod's 7 full heals. Storyline reason could be "As a spellcaster, you must meet as many other magic-users as possible." Like a black druid. |

Surely the challenge is going to be hard enough without banning the first ID dive? You get lucky, you have a frostbolt book, but your dwarf is dumb, you get 24 castings from first read, you're screwed... (((Unless we want to add never pick up a spellbook during entire game, only allowed to use the books you start off with - hehe, you'd have to put off reading your book until you at least had the crown of science+consumed oracle corpse - this was a joke, please let us pick up spellbooks AND visit Infinity, please))) |

Either way is fine, actually - no ID or restricted ID. With full ID scumming, anyone should have stayed on ID:1-2 until they have enough spellbook. Including healing ones. Very little risk, and makes rest of the game quite easy. Limited ID-access - as given by original rules - would funtion as an "extra" low-level dungeon, in addition to PC and DD. But with a little bad luck you could still not find a single book in the ID. So spellbook arguemnt does not really hold. You could still get books as drops from monsters killed in one of the regular dungeons anyway. So either way is fine, bottom line is - this is supposed to be a bit harder. Silfir - exactly. Whatever. Strike 11 additional levels (if going as deep as level 6 for example) of equipment opportunity off list if you want- I fully anticipate being immediately surrounded by jackals or similar first step out of terinyo, and will therefore be dead anyway... Sadly, I am still at the stage where 99% of my characters die before the CoC. Hell, I only need about 7000 points to get onto end of my high score list, and 90% of my characters don't even do that. SO much for continual improvement. Maybe I will fully explore the village for a change, and chat to some children and freeze a bridge over the pond and stuff, just to maximise my enjoyment whilst I can :) |

No healing skill ever seems like the simplest option. I don't quite understand why you say getting it from scrolls of education is not okay for people doing carpenter quest, but is okay for people doing druid quest... Ad for the ID thing, I almost never ID scum anyway so it's not a problem either way. I doubt early on I'd even have enough PP to cast more than 1 or 2 frost spells... I'm going to participate in this, and i like the rules. the ID is basically where I'd go after killing, or failing to kill but still live the black druid. It is a relatively safe place to level up to about 8-10, and a nice place to get some decent minions so I will be at least somewhat prepared for the sprint run through the dwarven halls. just out of curiosity, since the healing skill is forbidden, are the spell heals also forbiddon? a wish for books of cure critical wounds sometime early in the game would be a life saver to the necro and minions after LE is trained by reading lots of scrolls and stuffs "I have opinions -STRONG opinions- that sometimes, I don't agree with" ---Prez.
