I've decided to try to get a win in under 24000 turns, my current best. To do this, I have to shave off as many moves as possible. Even things that are helpful have to go, if they are too turn consuming. I use grey elves, mainly for thier PP regen rate, and high initial learning stat. For my latest attempt, I decided to skip my normal 'kill Hotz for the gold' opening. It does provide a lot of benefit, for the early game, but it takes ~1000 moves to do it. So I head for the BUGWIL, fire up a torch, and clear the map to the stairs. I reach exp. level 12, and head for the ID. Stair climbing between ID levels 5-6 for 2000 turns yields many 'turn efficient' benefits. A few points of DV/PV, many spells, and probably a blink dog corpse. Actually, most of the turns are taken up reading spellbooks. A spellbook of darkness reads quickly enough, but that 'slender tome' can easily turn out to be 'death ray'. Say goodbye to SEVERAL hundred turns, with no reward to justify it. Upon gaining TP control, I raid Darkforge. This is another highly 'turn efficient' option. This yields great armor and weapon. Spells inventory, after the ID: Darkness, Disarm traps, Lightning ball, Lightning bolt, Magic Lock, Magic Missile, Revelation, Strength of Atlas, Teleport. A great spell list for the early game. I next zipped through the CoC, to the big room. I lit a torch, to extend my visible radius. Using teleports, (to hopefully limit monster generation) I quickly stabilized all available morgia/moss. A spider factory starts, and after some heavy fighting was stopped. I now have no PP's, so I leave the big room, headed for dwarftown. The turn counter stands at ~4000, this is much better than average for this point in the game. Up to this point, the RNG has been good to me, great spellbooks, good equipment, nice herb patterns. Now, upon descending the stairs, there is a lightning vortex. It stands there, one space away from me. My HP is 54, and I know it will kill me if it hits. I have a few options available to me, and chose wrongly. I die in a horrible lightning storm, and could kick myself for it. See if you can guess what I did, and why it was tremendously stupid. Also, if anyone has any suggestions for shaving off turns, please share them. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

Im sure you have noticed to turn off autopicks right? Spellcasters are good choise for this one due their chance to hit multiple enemies right from the beginning - good to clear tunnels when you need to pass. Obviously all unnecessary fighting must be skipped, that also means you remain low levelled that might be bad thingy - You need to know how much you can spend time levelling yourself up. Earlygame quests are waste of time when you are trying time attack, Dunno about Thrundarr quests.. No bookcasting, Skill/Attribute training can be timeconsuming. Seems like hard and frustating challenge... In 24000 turns my characters are usually around dwarven graveyard/pyramid and so on. "The white baby dragon equips the small shield." WTF :D |

Hmm, so your options would have been to pray for PP, read a scroll of darkness, cast darkness from HP, or drink an invis potion. The first one could go wrong if it was too fast and blew up on your before you had a chance to cast Darkness afterwards. The last one would be bad if it turned out to be cursed... Not sure what else could have gone wrong. Don't think I could be that helpful in giving general advice to be honest, since my style of play is all about being slow and careful, and it's certainly at odds with the challenge I've been giving myself lately. A couple of scummy tactics I use might be considered turn efficient though. Gaining shield marks will be a problem for you, since you'll generally be avoiding combat, but obviously you need some decent DV. I'd recommend using spider factories in the big room to get some necessary skill levels. Surround yourself with spiders whilst Very Aggressive and wearing two shields (with other eq that reduces DV and improves PV) and keeping tapping wait. This works best with tarantulas who attack twice a round and can give a total of 32 marks each. With say 6 marks per round, and clearing the nearby ones with fireball every 9 rounds, you'll be looking at 1620 marks (close to shield level 9) in 300 rounds. This is suboptimal - you could easily get over 10 marks per round and clear the nearby spiders less often, which would reduce it to closer to 150 rounds. For an extra 18 DV that's pretty decent. For gaining missile marks (should you wish to do so) then the most efficient and easy way is with swamp hydras. They give 5 marks per hit, and take a huge number of hits to kill when you're low level (you might never hurt them in fact). If you have a decent number of arrows then wearing a dooming item and peppering them in the wilderness can be worth a good few missile levels. It would take 180 hits to get to missile level 9. Coupled with the actual hunting, arrows that miss, and dodging the hydra (they're very dangerous) you'd be looking at quite a few more turns than that though. Plus you may not care about missiles as a wizard. You may want to rely on the water orb for healing a bit more than normal. It's less turns than spense and spells, and doesn't require preparation like prayers. You get about a third of a corruption when wearing the elemental gauntlets, but in a low turn game corruption may not be as much of an issue. Will you be avoiding the Eternal Guardian, or perhaps even using your previous trick of harvesting xp from him and his kin? Slow Monster spell might be handy for not just gaining xp, but for speeding everyon else up so monsters do what you want (ie come within your ball radius) in less of your turns. For D50 WoD ending sounds optimal, but it doesn't take long to clear with acid ball and potions of boost willpower. Same for the other temples, especially fire - clearing them can be good for xp, and doesn't take too long if you have big balls. Not Mana though - just kill the main guy, grab the orb and run. You may want to use offensive alchemy just to get a clear path on Nuurgy. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

I did cast darkness with a torch on. It's just such a habit, see a vortex, cast darkness. I even had an ID'd potion of invisibility in my pack, which would have worked perfectly. I had read the advice on shield marks before, but I guess I had never done the math on it. Seeing it though, it does look efficient. I would not be able to do it early, due to low HP's and low quality items. After I train with herbs a bit, I think it would be a really quick way to get a few extra DV points. I usually don't train missiles, but I may start. I've had to kill the Archmage before, with bows at level 2. I wonder how a swamp hydra compares with the old barbarian. I'm pretty sure he doesn't give 5 marks per hit, but I don't have to run from him, due to the water shield. Usually, I avoid fighting the EG, he just takes too many turns to kill. If I have found a weapon of penetration, I will likely try it though. I had not considered slowing myself to save turns, but I WILL keep an eye out for it from now on. About D:50, I am usually at a very low exp. level when entering. I count on these exp. point rich monsters, to get me to exp. level 50. I think that winning with a lower level PC, might yield a lower score. About exploiting the temples for exp. points. > clearing them can be good for xp, and doesn't > take too long if you have big balls. Heh. That makes sense in more than one way. But unfortunatly, my characters usually fall short in both. They seldom have ball spells at all, until after the casino. The ID can sometimes give them, but again, not much time for looking. I have had many characters die, trying to exploit the temples for exp. points. The earth temple is the worst by far. I will try to exploit the ToEF a bit more though, due to the monsters cold vulnerability, it should be turn efficient. Thanks for the suggestions, and if anyone thinks of more, please post them. You know, I'd have teleported the vortex away instead of trying that darkness thing. You can call me ignorant of the many fine uses of the Darkness spell, and I probably am, but I'd have survived where you didn't :P You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? (123456789) 4 Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! |

gut: Instead of directly running from the hydra you can teleport from side to side. With Farsight this means only having to teleport every 10 turns or so (assuming your bow range is good enough, which it usually is with a long bow). Majority of the fire temple can be cleared in a dozen rounds if you boost your willpower and use ice ball. Relies on having the spell of course. I assume you'll be forgoing the Rift? Yep. The Rift gets cut. In fact, almost all of the side quests have to be cut. Some dwarf quests are neccasary, for the fireproof blanket. I think the ToEF *MIGHT* be possible without it, but I just hate the thought of no wands/potions for backup. I almost always use at least a PoEH. The ice ball spell would be a rare gift, most of the time I have to do the druid quest to get the BOLT spell. > You know, I'd have teleported the vortex away > instead of trying that darkness thing. I know! That's what KILLS! I had so many ways of living through it, but I had to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Some of the ways I could have survived: 1. Teleported the vortex away. 2. Teleported MYSELF away. I had TP control. 3. Drink a PoI. I had an uncursed one in my pack. 4. Magic missile it, maybe even 2 shots at it. 5. JUST CLIMB THE STAIRS AND GET AWAY FROM IT! But sometimes, habits just get one killed. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

I lost my best PC yet to a game crash. Was killing Yulgash, when all of a sudden, the game wouldn't take any more keypresses. The turn counter stood at ~19000, well on pace for a 23000 turn victory. I had saved Khellevaster, and had the lightning ball spell. Having two things like that in one game is quite rare. I do believe this is the 'one that got away'. I will still keep trying though. I assume you are casting Teleport from memory right? Now I guess your mana stat doesn't get much training - not much standing around waiting for PP regen in the caverns, no book casting, not even killing very many monsters, but at least there's a use for the 100s of turns you might spend reading Death Ray 'by accident' - you can always cast the ray from memory until you forget it, whilst surrounded by Darren's spider factories perhaps, to do some mana training, whilst you are also improving your DV, and not in urgent need of PP. Maybe even worth entering a wilderness square, casting, leaving, traversing until PP regened, then repeating - an extra three turns traversing the wilderness per memory cast, you might manage to up the mana stat by two or three in less than 30 extra turns, depending on how much of the spell you memorised with that one otherwise disastrous read. Sounds pretty efficient to me, once damn spell in my mind already... |

That is an efficient use of turns. Sometimes, when gathering herbs in the big room, my PP's run out, due to heavy fighting. I will climb the stairs and read books while regenerating, even 'death ray' if that's all I have. Usually I can regen ~80 points with one reading. If I get a high cost spell that way, I will 'wilderness cast' it, as I travel. I wouldn't want to read while being attacked by spiders though! Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

I just tried the 24000 turn challenge with some female gray elven wizard PC's. It took a few more tries to get one off the ground, than it usually does with the male equivelant, but not drastically more. Once the PC was off to a good start though, she survived equally well as a male PC would. The shop prices were considerably lower, but ultimately made little or no difference in game play. I suppose the biggest difference was in the black market, the female gray elves could always afford more items than the males ever could. By the time I reached dwarftown though, lower shop prices were not much help. I think I got better prices, when selling items to waldenbrooke, but it wasn't enough to change the time when I was able to afford a crowning. The PC died on D:50 while trying to acid ball some balors, which is quite a normal death for this challenge. The turn counter stood at 24362, which is quite respectable. I *THINK* I noticed some differences in game play between male and female PC's. I am not sure yet though, because I have only played one female, all the way through. I think different spellbooks may be more likely for females than males. I will not be sure though, until I have played several more through. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

I find it very unlikely that there is any relation like you say. Remember that it's easy for the brain to imagine patterns that aren't there. Well done on getting so far in so little time - hopefully next time you can shave a little extra off and manage a victory. For any who may be interested. My latest attempt at the 24000 turn win, is currently in progress. The PC is looking good so far. I have obtained the elemental gauntlets, and am currently in the ID for books. The turn counter is on 6000, and that is ahead of pace for the challenge. I have lucked out, finding an early teleport book. Now I just need a bit more offense, I don't want to use my frost bolts for non-tower monsters. I had to break my 'no saving' rule, because of the roman republic game. So if I win, I will not get the message 'she saved the world with her brave efforts, without even stopping to save herself. Nice PoGA recipe... Is your longevity recipe any good? I'd switch to the other shield if I were you - 3 PV for 1 DV? Especially at this stage in the game. Nice going so far. Going to attempt a DarkForge raid soon? I have to wonder, exactly what parts of the game do you do and which do you skip out? I wouldn't have bothered much with the dwarven graveyard doing this challenge - I'd have figured it'd be a lot of turns for little xp. Longevity = troll blood + extra healing Indeed, gray elves have little need for age related potions. So far though, I have neither a longevity nor a youth potion. Right about the shield also. I was thinking of just trying to have the best chance possible, for shield marks. It turns out that I just haven't had to defend against enough enemies to matter. I did raid DF, soon after posting that. I have tried leaving out the Elemental Gauntlets and or the RotHK. I can't succeed that way though. I NEED those resistances to get me through the tower, sometimes they are the only source of fire resistance I have. I HATE trying to rely on that CoS for fire immunity, but I will if I have no other choice. The Griffyard doesn't eat up too many turns, if you just rush headlong into the minor undead, and bolt several at a time. For the underground, well if you have teleport + TP control, it also takes very few turns. The RotHK is also worth getting, not too many turns, and besides, I have to have something to do while I train toughness up a bit. The parts that I am leaving out currently are: Dwarf quests, if the quest monster is rare. Druid quest, unless I have no frost bolt spell. Puppy quest, I don't really need the L boost. SMC/HMV, though sometimes, this has paid off BIG for my PC's, it just isn't consistant. I rely heavily on gauranteed items and such, unreliable tactics can ruin a game. Filk quest, chaos resistance isn't a problem in such a short game. Library, the spells would be nice, just too many turns. BDC, the loot is nice, but not usually needed to win, so it gets cut. Minitaur maze, because the cow axe isn't needed. That's just about it, unless I'm missing some. I am open minded about trying different tactics though. I want to shave as many turns as I can possibly shave. I have considered wishing for 'emperor moloch' in the barbarians glade, but the few rare times I have had the opportunity in these games, I chicken out and just go for the AoLS instead. The gauranteed book of TP is just really helpful. Where I'm at now. Character is still alive and ahead of schedule. Darkforge is cleared, and the RotHK is obtained. Currently, I am on the first level of the ToEF. I am encouraged by my spell list, but concerned by the low HP's. I think that if the ACW gets a single bolt through, I'm done. Thrundarr gave a difficult quest monster, so I wasn't able to get any strength points from ogre corpses. Most hindersome though, I have no fireproof blanket. I don't really feel like I need items, to beat the tower, but digging through to the orb will be tricky. My plan is to drop all items on D:1, and explore all levels of the tower. I will then retrieve my wand of digging from D:1, and return. Hopefully, the wand won't burn away on the few turns it will be vulnerable. It's a shame I can't teleport on the last level, I will have to walk it. I don't even have a bunch of junk to carry, to try to distract the RNG from my wand. Well, we will see how it goes. You think girls have more balls? (Sorry, had to say that.) In deference to what you said a female priest I took to the Chaos plane only found one ball spell (on D50 in fact - kinda useless by then). Even the Library had no ball spells. They are just generally rarer, and you've had a lucky couple of characters in my opinion. Lightning ball and ice ball are such perfect early finds though, considering their usefulness in two important locations... You might want to eat *lots* of morgia before toppling the tower. That way the level ups you get in there will give you guaranteed Toughness increases. Blessing the wand will obviously help. However, if it burns you can always pray for pick axes, and I find they tend to take quite a few turns to melt (again especially if blessed). Best of luck anyway - you certainly need it... Edit: Your alchemy recipes are quite decent by the looks of things. Troll blood isn't of great use to a grey elven wizard, since it takes a *lot* of them to affect your healing rate from other sources. Extra healing you have another recipe for - hopefully something decent (it usually is). Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." > You might want to eat *lots* of morgia before > toppling the tower. THAT was a good idea. It is something I never remember to do, but I did it this time, and it yielded an extra couple points to toughness. Thanks to the iceball spell, the ACW was no problem. I did pick up the unholy aura corruption there though. Not the worst, but I had not one form of chaos resistance. The PC was stuck with it, and I was very concerned about how to handle the casino. I just teleported my way through dwarftown. For the casino, I started by teleporting straight to the down staircase. I stored all my stuff on the next level, due to strength being at a very low 16, 26 if boosted by the fire orb. I teleported to the back end of the gift shop, and cautiously worked my way toward the shopkeeper. Due to such horrible carrying cappacity, I had to drop all armor parts and other heavy items periodically. I didn't have scrolls of identify to waste, so I had to be selective about what I wanted to identify. Soon enough, the shopkeeper went nuts on me, he actually threw a coin from well beyond my sight range. I recieved no message about scaring away customers. I wasn't able to fight well, without my inventory, I was dependant upon the water orb for larger ball spell radius. I quickly gathered what items I had gathered, and teleported out of there to retrieve my inventory. I beefed up my PC as best I could with the loot I had stolen and returned, for the exp. points. I took out the shopkeeper by standing to his left, and blasting him in the dark until he panicked, then repeatedly casting ice ball while he was cowering in the upper right hand corner. I was hoping that I wouldn't get cursed from killing the shopkeeper, since he was the one who attacked first. Nope, still cursed. Oh well, it's really just bad luck, so I'm not really worried about it. I have passed no altars yet, but I still have many levels yet to go, so I'm still hopeful. I am not crowned, so the elemental altars are unfortunately useless to me. I found two greater vaults of giants. I had an efficient way to destroy them, so I cleared them. I picked up 5 strength points, the Bracers of War and the Ring of Immunity. Character is now on D:38, and ready to clear the air temple. She is well ahead of pace for finishing in under 24000 turns. Right now I would estimate 22000 may be possible. I'm running low on teleport spells though. I have to save some for D:50, so actually walking previously explored dungeon levels is a possibility now. That would slow things down a bit, but not so much to make me miss the 24000 turn mark. It's looking good. Character is dead. Death by Archmage. He got two powerful bolts in on one turn. HP's went from 275 to -15 in one turn. I even had 2 sources of death ray resistance in the AMW and the SoN. Don't really see anything I could have done differently. Maybe the lack of crowning did me in. Turn counter was only at 21000. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! Ouch, very bad luck man. Was he taking a long time to kill, or did he just happen to get 2 bolts in? Most games I have he doesn't even get one in - two would be hard on any char. The only thing you could have done differently maybe is drink all your potions of boost speed, since they're probably more needed there than on D50. Higher toughness from sickness/herb scumming might have given you the necessary HP to survive too. You still set on using GE wizards for this? I have to wonder how trolls would fair... They're usually surprisingly good at this sort of restricted challenge game. Of course your two reasons stated for using grey elves are completely untrue for trolls... I was using acid ball to great effect. I would cast light periodically, to check on how injured he was. I stopped checking at 'severely'. He was blinded, and only hitting me occasionally. His damage per hit was quite mild really, but I was healing after each one, just in case. I suppose he must have 'decided to fight to death in a blind rage' in the dark, and been blocked from fleeing by other monsters. The potions of speed might have made the difference, but I didn't think of it. Next time. I have an open mind about trying other race/class combos. Indeed I have had some success with trolls, but they have leveling problems. Undead are a problem for them at any time, but if you are at an especially low exp. level, one mistake can kill them. I always take Nuurgy down with slaying ammo, which usually doesn't give him much any chance of fighting back (or any chance of berserking either). I also always use a constant light source, even if it means giving up the water orb or ankh/preserver. Ventriloquism is also better to use on him than blindness, in my opinion (you should train it a bit during the game). I'm thinking a trollish priest could be decent. Slow Monster helps with levelling, invis helps with ghosts. The advantage they have is of course the high strength and toughness - it'll last them all game. Being poor at spells would be a big hindrance though, especially since you couldn't get the Oracle corpse from the HMV. I have successfully killed him with slaying ammo before. It works great, when it's available. Unfortunately, this time it wasn't an option. I did my best to get him to come out and face me in the corridor, but he just wouldn't come. I actually wasted 500! turns waiting for him. I know I woke him up, because he was 'darking' like crazy. He just wouldn't or couldn't come out. So I had to go in after him. The darkness was beneficial to me, as it kept the chaos goons off my back while I fought him. I had some humanoid slaying ammo, but could not use them in the dark. I will give troll priests a try next. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

If you scum for starsigns then Cup-born would be well-advised, for the lesser xp and the easier time learning spells. You won't be able to do your usual bug-clearing for early levels, but you will be tough enough to stair-hop in the ID straight away. Gaining Le will be problematic before having lots of gold for Garth (pity you avoid the HMV - Oracle there is tasty for trolls). Also remember to get the "Good Learner" talent - it actually gives +50% xp in most cases. Of course it could turn out to be an awful suggestion, especially when you get towards the late game, but trolls are fun to play at least. I actually did try the troll priest, he was doing rather well too. I did go through the SMC and toward the HMV, but died in a river. I will certainly try again with another. Hopefully this time, I will have better luck with rivers. I might scum for birthmonth next time. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

My current attempt at the 24000 turn challenge. I have just finished the tower, and the turn counter is ~13000. I had to do the ToEF with no items, do to no fireproof blanket. I am on track for victory. Kitty karma is good, so the next challenge will be the Archmage. I am about to make my final dive now. My stratagy differed this time, by forgetting the 'treasure hunter' talent line. Instead I pursued the 'bookcasting' line, and it has paid off so far. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Screenshot ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ######### #.......# #..>....# #.......# #####/### #.# #######/# .........# .........# .........# #######.# #.# #####+# #.....# #...<.# #....@# ####### Quizard St:28 Le:28 Wi:36 Dx:28 To:20 Ch:12 Ap:14 Ma:32 Pe:24 NC DV/PV: 73/23 H: 187(193) P: 326(349) Exp: 21/954279 D: 1 M: 13284 Coward ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weapon Skills ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Melee weapon Lvl Hit Dam DV Level Required marks --------------------- --- --- --- -- ------------- -------------- Twohanded weapons 4 +4 +4 +1 skilled 173 // DF had an eternium 2-hander, all other weapon skills // are at zero. Looks pretty damned good - I can't believe how efficient you are... Do you eat the claw bugs or just kill them for XP? Oh, and when you are stair climbing the ID, do you just glance at room with the stairs, or will you venture forth if you have a tension room?
