Beastfighters are truly good once they get going. I recently finished the game with a gnomish one, though I haven't left the world yet (thinking of raising all stats to 99 first, just for fun). It was quite easy all the way to the mana temple where N-V gave the char a scare. But even the fire temple was almost like a walk in a park.

Monks are a lot better than beastfighters anytime:

"You hit the greater titan with full force and slay it. The greater titan seems to break in vital ruptures!" (something like that at least ;))

The worst combos: -farmer, merchant etc. with other than troll/drakeling
-hurthling fighting classes.
Druids? Just read about their upper level powers. They're not the worst.

Spoiler
Beastfighters don't receive penalties with missile weapons. It's in the Guidebook.

Druids' only good class power is lightning immunity IMO.

I've recently given up on playing as hurthling wizards so that I can try out thieves. Specifically I decided for a high elven thief. The only other character type I've put much effort into is human rangers.

Any character/class combination that does not get food preservation is awful.

Going for a second precrowning in particular is a nightmare.

Well, yes. But then again beastfighters don't get as severe penalties from burden as monks do, and they do also get nice ability:

"You hit the greater moloch with full force and critically damage it. The greater moloch is stunned." (or something like that).

Evidence exhibit a:
"There is no best or worst combo"
Exhibit b: "Every combo can be played if youre good"

There are some combos that can be played if youre not good at all, right?
Wouldn't you say that these were better then?

Of course every combo can be played, but some are easier than others. One pretty conclusive test would be to start 50 games with each possible combo, record score with each attempt, and see if you see a pattern. Ill bet that some combos will come out with higher avg. score than others. This would, however, only tell YOU which is YOUR best/worst class and race.

Personally I think Troll is the worst race.
Good skills, but that exp thing is terrible.
Short lifespan can also be potential killer.

Worst class...I havent gotten lucky with priest/healer/druids, so mabye one of those.
Merchant is a challenging class, as is mindcrafter and farmer. And havent bothered with fighters much, either.

By this argument I ended up with amongst others the famous Troll Healer, by many considered a very good and easy beginner's class.
Each players style affects which combos are good/bad.

P.S Grey elven wizards are good.

Hmmmm... I'd say picking a weak race for a fighter type char or a stupid race for a spellcasting race would be quite bad. For instance a hurthling barbarian doesn't sound too good (though haven't tried one) or a troll/orc wizard. Merchants are puny in the beginning so I guess a hurthling merchant would be quite hard to keep alive in the beginning.

I'm sure I've had a hurthling mindcrafter start with 2 or 3 strength...hehe, I mean why even bother? She was dead before she started. Ive never had a mindcrafter get very far in the game so I'll go for hurthling mindcrafter. Mind you druids of all races really suck hard too.

Mindcrafters rule if you know how to play them - and survive long enough.

2 or 3 str? If you have some rocks, you can still survive with that...

Is this spoily?

Spoiler

Druids are very good to keep alive in SMC... also you can kill the animals if you don't mind becoming chaotic... Well, too bad the gods won't like you for a while...

They have a big problem, though, they aren't very good at reading books until level 9 or so because they often start with quite low Literacy.

Druids do start out with Lightning Bolt, but I don't like them that much. I can deal with not killing animals, but they just don't get very much.

I often find myself with a trollish healer. I give him long life, and learned if possible, and later he get's healthy and with a maxed out healing skill I can usually defeat whatever comes my way.

Personlly, I love Wizards. Gnomish Wizards in particular; I never get very far with 'em though.
