I think all these theories are pretty valid sounding, except raven1's, and that doesn’t matter because he/she/it is always wrong.

I think that a si is like what Armada said: a constantly changing item. Just that the si will continuously grow into different shapes and then a part of it will detach from the main one, making it completely different from what it was before.

Have you peeps heard the story of the si? If you haven't, read, it's quite funny.

QUOTE (Thomas):

If you are interested in how it got into the game, here we go:
Quite a number of years ago (that must have been around 1985 or so)
I played a lot of AD&D with a friend. We had two characters,
dwarven fighter/thieves of LN alignment named Gorko Galgenstrick and
Groron Garman respectively, who lived through many many adventures.
One day my friend looked at the character sheet of his character,
Groron Garman, and discovered garbled writing in his list of normal
items stating that he owned a "Si". We had no idea what that could
be and how it got there and we were pretty puzzled but left it that way,
making occasional comments about Groron's mighty artifact, the Si.
Months later my friend again was revising the list of normal items
his character lugged around and noticed the word "Si" in a second
place on the equipment list. Now we were really puzzled and declared
this item to be an artifact with unknown powers. The 'Si' in ADOM
is just a kind of insider joke on my behalf to celebrate those great
old days :-)

I think of it as a little semi-solid melting purple thing. My base is a weapon in an old 3d shooter "Ken's Labirinyth." Sorta like the jelly bomb, except purpler.

This is off topic, but TongHoAnh, the quote in your sig isnt unknown.

" She's cold and she's cruel
But she knows what she's doin'
She pushed me in the pool
At our last school reunion
She laughs at my dreams
But I dream about her laughter
Strange as it seems
She's the one I'm after

Cause she's bittersweet
She knocks me off of my feet
And I can't help myself
I don't want anyone else
She's a mystery
She's too much for me
But I keep comin' back for more
She's just the girl I'm lookin' for"

is that possibly where its from?

Lord, I dont know anything about the song :) I heard one dude babbling something about his ex-gf in a mmorpg, one of which is my sig. I fell in love with it immediately and if I could remember his nick, I'd have put him as the author >.< Thanks for the nice song.

Nice imagination. Especially since it's a gray "[" in the game.

'[' is armor, I believe. :P

But yeah, what I've always imagined the si as is... a dark-greyish cube, or box that can't be opened. Perfectly equilateral all the way around, and indestructible.

Its part of a giant jigsaw, and if you complete it, you get the (non-existant) scroll of omnipotence :)

All you need to get a scroll of omnipotence is a twisted mind, so you can properly mess up reading a certain scroll label.

To me, a si looks like... Um... A thing you can sell and get money for. And which replicates quickly. An adamantium hamster, maybe.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

For some reason, I always see it as an three-dimensional iron comma with a tail that can be gripped. THat, or a cylander.

This is the only forum I know where you can start a thread and find it on the front page a year and a half later.

Speaking of bumping old threads, did I coin the term "thread necromancy"? I remember using it on these forums, ages and ages ago, before I'd seen anyone else say it. And now I see other people here use it occasionally.

I always thought of it as a round, black, rune-covered stone, same width as but a bit longer than a fist.

I've always seen the Si as a quite rugged rectangular grey metal bar. Probably because I've used it for many different things, killing corrosive monsters, throwing it at karmic lizards, etc. As opposed to others thinking it is useless I see it as a bar usefull to just about anything which just seem to have replicated everytime you check your equipment.

I see the Si as an 'S' shaped hard-metal object, about 1 meter in length with a perfectly smooth, polished surface. It is pointed in both ends, not unlike a butcher ess.

i see it as sort of a metal ball with little spikes sticking out of it. at the end of each is a twisted bit of metal.

each time you look at it, all the bits of metal have changed shape, though the entire thing always stays the same.

holding it in your hand and turning it around, you will see new shapes no matter how long you look at it, and it's impossible to remember what the old shapes looked like.

I've always envisioned a sort of maybe 30" piece of metal two-by-four. Able to be used as a weapon, but not a great one, since it's handy for bashing things like oozes and rust monsters since it is indestructible. Nothing special except whenever you look for it you happen to have a few more.

I've totally always pictured the si as an ankh. Don't ask why, I have no clue.
