Regarding vortices & low level PCs, always keep a scroll of darkness handy (unless you can already cast the spell, of course). I have *never* heard of a vortex exploding in the dark. Saves your skin every time. |

Early game: poison and sickness. Later on: carelessness (of the only 2 chars I have lost past L20, one died in the mana temple because I didn't put on an amulet of light and the other was deleted due to sig291 upon entering the casino level). The Great Wyrm of Order breathes light (more) - wow, you feel very smart! |

Carelessness, exactly. Had a character die from poison after killing the Snake from Beyond. I had lots of cure poison and alraunia antidotes, mind you. You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? (123456789) 4 Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! |

Re 64: When you leave the PC, lock it down. It should only take a few keystrokes (although I don't remember if it works on XP Home). Alternatively, save the game when you leave. :P ---- It depends for me. Usually I somehow get overrun by monsters in one of the large open caves - either in CoC, PC or the RotHK caves. With a spellcaster, you always have a small chance of finding something that's immune to everything you can throw at it - say you don't have lightning bolt meet a steel golem, or you only have fire bolt and stumble upon a fire drake. Oh, and one time I was playing near blind, with the screen turned dim to conserve power and the sun right behind me in the train. It was bright enough to see where I was going and what I was fighting. But not bright enough to see the "Starving" message in the lower left corner. Move the cursor to the desired position and press [SPACE] when done. Impossible. Suddenly you stand elsewhere. You see an ancient altar of black obsidian. The goblin rockthrower suddenly shouts a prayer to his gods! You are consumed by a roaring column of flame! |

About half my characters die in the SmC, but that's after only about three minutes of play. I expect to lose that many; I'd rather waste three minutes on a character that dies in the SmC rather than have him killed later on when he has to search for the stairs, or have his equipment destroyed by water traps. Sickness and poison are only a problem before level 6 or so; sickness more so than poison. I am almost never directly killed by either of these, though; mostly they just kill me by lowering my HP and using up my healing resources until something else gets me. Early game, Large Gnolls tend to do in some of my spellcasters. They're unexpectedly strong and look exactly like the normal gnolls, which are usually easy to handle. Other out-of-depth monsters--ones that hit hard--are similarly a problem. The top level of the Pyramid has killed me a few times, thanks to the monsters generated there. Got a gorgon once--ouch. Midgame, I am often killed in the ToEF (by the ACW) or by uberjackals/spiders. This is also where Signal 291 gets the most characters. Late game, Corruption and purple-jhood. I have yet to finish the ToEF before the 90-day limit... Also, aging is a problem, though I'm thinking of going back to wizards for their handy Alchemy skll to handle that. I can only imagine how aging *could* be a problem... All my characters that have gotten far enough to encounter ghost lords were elves. Because of aging, I have started to play elves almost exclusively. (Elven archers, elven fighters, elven assassins...) You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction?
