Its ages since I was in a position to fire a WandDes, whats the range on those babies anyway? I vaguely remember being pretty impressed by them. |

I didn't mean "no monsters at all on the level", I meant "no monsters around to be damaged in the about three square radius". I wasn't being that unclear, was I? :( And in this glorious plan of mine you don't teleport away the balor; you clear the small rooms with lots of bling, lure the balor OUT of the room by foot, teleport, handle the lever, destroy it while no one is around. The hard part will probably be the "no one is around" part, but with pumped up bling it should be doable. Also, you can use teleport on anything besides the balor, right?. You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? (123456789) 4 Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! |

The 'find weakness' skill does seem to be the best option. I will get it now, and hopefully have time to train it for the ToEF. As far as D:50, I was thinking about (pretty much) what Silfir is saying. I just planned to lure away the balor, or even just let him bash away at me with my tactics on coward. I was unaware that a WoD inflicted damage on monsters. So now I will try the door creation method. I already have the stuff for that, I just simply didn't remember that as an option. I will not be forcing a restocking of the gift shop. I have now decided against using casino gold in this game, so buying out the gift shop is not an option for me. Thanks for all the advice, I will certainly need more before this thing is done. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

I would almost consider it against the spirit of the challenge to turn down the lure of gold :P Still, there's nothing to say you can't buy stuff from the casino - just not abuse it for money. Wands of destruction can have a very big radius - I think it's linked to willpower like ball spells. What's the door creation ending? I always go for the kill everything approach, but obviously that's not advisable in this instance. If I can afford some things from the gift shop, I will certainly get them. I had to look up the 'door creation' ending myself. I remembered reading it, in the guidebook, but have never used it before. I'll probably goof it somehow, but it sounds simple. Just enclose the levers with doors, throw the lever, and zap a 'non-door-opening' type monster on top of it. Lock it in, so the balors can't TP on top of the lever. Do it for the other lever and leave. The guidebook explains it better. About character: I have some great news, and some bad news. The bad news first, I accidentally whacked two more monsters with a melee attack. My stratagy for the water temple, was to cast darkness in my dug out tunnel, and lead monsters through one by one. I would stand in the lighted square at the end, and bling them to death, while they could never hit me. It worked perfectly, I never took a hit, but I had equipped the RCT for the dexterity boost. Needless to say, I forgot to unequip it, when I went to lure more grues to their death. I wound up whacking into a grue TWICE before I realized what had happened. This gave I think 8 skill marks for each hit. I made a simmilar mistake a while later, and stupidly whacked into another monster in the dark while unarmed. This gave 6 skill marks to 'unarmed combat' skill. So my chances of this being an 'official' victory are 'OFFICIALY' over! I will still play the PC though, because it is tremendous fun. When I do this challenge again, I won't make so many mistakes. So on to the game and the great news. On D:22, the banshee level, I found a threat room full of karmic baby dragons. Upon looting the dead bodies, I found a wand of wishing, 5 charges. I immediatly used one for 'rings of slaying', and one for 'pairs of seven league boots', but that leaves 4 more wishes that I have no clue for how to use. I considered rings of ice for the tower, but that would mean leaving off my rings of slaying. I have quite decent fireproof gear, and had planned to do the first three levels of the ToEF with just that. This would save my fireproof blanket for the orb level, where I really do need much of my inventory to get me through. Now however, I am wondering if my gold pieces would melt away without a RoI. I just don't know. I have no interest in scumming the strength stat, so rings of weakness are out. I even considered archery gloves, of all things. Anything to get my 'to hit' and 'to damage' up, would be great. I have the alchemy skill, so I could wish for ingredients for PoGA. The only problem with that, is how low my alchemy skill is. It would take a while to even be ABLE to increase it to 100. I will post an edited verbose log file, in case that helps with suggestions. Well, the safest way to avoid damaging anything with a melee attack is to make sure to always wear two shields. A good idea anyway because only the shield skill will ever be trained, and thus the second shield nets you the most DV possible with your second hand because you can't train polearms. Apart from that, I'm somewhat confused. Shouldn't the same code of honour that keeps you from using various scumming methods also keep you from using that cheap door creation method? You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" It is not a 'code of honor' that keeps me from using scumming methods. I do not find them to be fun, that is all. A 'code of honor' wouldn't prevent me from smithing, or precrowning. Those are completely fair tactics to use, I just think they are boring. I am after all, using sickness and starvation tactics, for higher stats. You raise a good point about D:50 though, I will not use the door creation method. It wouldn't FEEL like a victory if I used that... If I can't clear the level, I will die there. Character has cleared Darkforge, and is heading into the ToEF as I type this. Still have 3 wishes left, I used one for some SoCR. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

If the guidebook says it then I guess the door creation method could work, but since balors can break down doors it sounds a bit silly to me. As for wishes... well wow, you're character is looking so damned good it's hard to say. You have most of the nice things you'd like. Definitely hold on to one or two in case of SoCR needs later on. You might want to wish for potions of dexterity - an extra 6 Dx wouldn't go unwanted. Hmm, how many boost dexterity potions does one wish provide? They could actually be more handy for particularly rough sections of the game (a blessed boost potion gives something like a +10 boost to the stat sometimes). Tower is tricky indeed. Gold pieces will melt, albeit slowly (a few of the pile will melt a bit at a time). With more fireproof blankets it wouldn't be so bad - you could just keep putting 100 gold in your missile slot when necessary and keep the rest in your pack. I guess give it a few tries with small piles of gold and see how you fare. You can also try without one of the rings of slaying to see if a ring of ice would be doable (one blessed ring is okay to protect your gold, since it doesn't all melt at once). How was DarkForge? Able to take down the golems okay? If you struggled with those you'll have real trouble with the elementals. The wyrm will obviously involve more individual tactics. You might want to get some training with Yergius to boost your Climbing more - a visit to the Rift might be helpful for gaining levels and finding more items. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

Thanks for the suggestions. Your comments about the PoBD vs PoD really has me thinking! An extra 6 points all the time is nice, but an extra 30, for the ASB could make the difference. I am leaning towards doing just that! I will leave the potions in 'wish form' for the time being though. The glowing wand is eternium, (I have heard), and so will be more secure than potions. I recieved 4 SoCR from the one wish, and my playing style is pretty fast, so I doubt I will need more than that. So I still have 3 to burn. Darkforge was surprisingly easy. I think weilding 2 shields is like cheating in there. With my tactics set to 'very aggressive', I was only hit a few times. I never went below 200 HP's. Perhaps it was due to the rings of slaying, but the golems rather melted before me. I didn't even have to chance equipping the RCT for the dexterity boost. Darkforge falling easily, gave me a lot of confidence for the Tower. I did clear the first 3 levels of the tower, using only fireproof gear (except for gold of coarse). I took no fireproof blanket with me for the first trip, due to paranoia. Blankets have failed me in the past at the WORST times in there! So I wanted to save them all for my fight with the ACW. I use the method you describe, about taking only some gold in with me at a time. It turned out, that there was no issue with gold melting away on me. I found WAY more than was lost. No monster in the tower gave me any problems except one... no surprisingly not THAT one! Believe it or not, red worms were almost the death of me. There was a 'dark' room that I had to cross, to find the down staircase. I got in, and BARELY got out alive! You see, the room had many red worms in there, and they were breeding like crazy. I couldn't fight them, because you can't throw coins in the dark. At the time, I had no inventory with me, so I had no source of light other than prayer. Since I am playing with 'no prayer allowed', I thought I was a dead man. Dumb luck saved me, I just kept stumbling about stupidly, and finaly found a clear path to a lighted square. It all worked out OK, but was too close for comfort. A grue gave me the only corrupting hit I took in there. Elementals took some HP's, but never a dangerous amount. No fire giant kings were found. There was a threat room of blue dragons, which yeilded no great treasure (I cringed, every time I saw the message 'something is shattered/melted by the heat). Red dragons were very easy. Even the ACW was pretty easy. He did get me down to 120 HP's once, but his bolt spells weren't taking more than 90 per hit. I did use a PoEH then, and that was the only one I needed. I did not use any potions or wands against him. I had them in my inventory, I'm not CRAZY. I just thought that since my PC was doing so well, I would try it first without the extras. I did lure him off the orb level, in case I needed to teleport away quickly. Character is now headed for the casino, and the Cats Eye Ring. Funny, that after all that work to get it, I might wind up not using it. I heard Soirana say that it doesn't help with missile critical hits. The ring of slaying might be better. I will try both, and report my findings. As for the library, I will avoid that place. It has been ages since I last went there. I have bad memories of destroyed climbing sets, and dead ratling dealers. That may have been many versions ago, but that kind of experience really stays with a fellow. The archery skill came from a lucky scroll of education. I had 2, but the other gave me the cooking skill. But I'm NOT complaining! Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

Character just went through casino. Picked up two whips of the snake, +10 and +7. The artifact shield 'Protector' was in there also, but cost 350,000 gold. I had to go sell every piece of junk I had found, plus do some fighting to boot. I found a minor blue dragon vault though, and got lots of gold from slaying them. I think some gold doubling happened, but it wasn't drastic. Next, I got the cat ring, and compared it to a ring of slaying. As far as coin throwing goes, RoS gives 2 more damage points, than the RotMC. The RotMC however, gives 9 points more 'to hit', than the RoS. Not to mention defense benefits. So for now I am sticking with one RoS, and the RotMC. When I hit the earth temple, I may go for the 2 extra poits of damage. I beat the air temple, which was pretty easy. I only took one corrupting hit while there, stupid vapor rats. Picked up the 'you rage' corruption, '(DV-9, +6 melee damage)!'. Well, normally I don't mind this one, but as a coin slinger, the melee bonus is useless. Still it could have been worse, it could have drained my dexterity. For now I will keep it. Ok, I have now completed the earth temple. It wasn't nearly as bad as I was thinking. Although, I do think it may have been rather impossible without the 'find weakness' skill. I had the RotMC DX+16. Two whips of the snake DX+10 and DX+7. Boots of sneakiness DX+4, archery gloves (+0, +4), and to top it all off, the Air Orb DX+10. That's a combined 47 points of dexterity boost, on top of an intrinsic 46 points. Adding up to a dexterity stat of 93, and 4 free damage points from the gloves, AND I STILL COULDN'T HURT THE ANCIENT STONE BEAST. The only way I could hurt him, was with criticals, but they were quite effective. It was only a bit time consuming, and never dangerous. Character is now at exp. level 30. Next stop is the Mana temple. Two more damage of ring slaying compared to 16 extra speed of Ring of the Master Cat? I'd take the speed! Tactics and Dodge is normal, I guess. Apparently, archery is impossible to increase without using "real" missile weapons... Can it be increased by shooting them into empty space? You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. Wow! Amazingly well done, gut. Sounds like you had an easier time in the tower than most characters. If you have that high dex in general then there's no real need for boost dex potions - I'd spend a wish on some potions of dexterity just to keep the general dex high. Hopefully mana temple won't be too troublesome. Remember your resistances and a light source... Biggest problem might be the multiplying chaos warriors. Luring the archmage out is obviously most advisable... I've had trouble like that in the Rift before - a very very bad experience of saving up enough gold for ages only to find the ratling trader dead (eventually managed to get a RoDS to wish for climbing sets). Now I always take at least two climbing sets in, one blessed and one uncursed. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

Starting with the tactics skill at 100. WOW! I think my learning stat was at 13 when I got the skill. I suppose learning means a lot. My speed can be up to 143, but finding it to be a double edged sword. It really helps against the powerful monsters, but yields less exp. points, that I desperately need. About the archery skill, I think I remember reading in the guidebook, about training it. It's something like 'it only trains, if you shoot monsters in the red zone of your missile range'. Well, my missile range has outgrown my visible range. I have tried extending my targeting, past the monster and into the red zone, allowing the missile to 'just happen' to hit the monster on it's way. I did this a zillion times, and it doesn't help. I am now to chicken to use the wishes for PoD. I am realizing just how many turns it takes, to bling to death high powered monsters. Not to mention summoners on deep dungeon levels.I have had to bling my way through two werewolf kings so far. That means I also had to kill 298 dire wolves, 201 wolves, 61 werewolf lords, and 70 silver wolves. I will save the wishes for SoCR, unless I have big trouble. I certainly don't want to create uber chaos servants, but if I can't quickly take out the chaos wizards, that may very well happen. My normal stratagy is to enter while invisible, and in the darkness, wake up the Archmage, and retreat. This time however, darkness is out of the question. I may try invisibility alone, but I really don't want to get trapped in there. I will not use potions or wands against the Archmage, unless there is no other way. I resume play now, and most likely have victory or death today. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

For speed - casting slow monster on yourself could help. About mana temple - i had one idea but it depends on range of your gold coins. As you open secret door Archmage is just in front of you. It is 18 squares distance, but if you can't bling that far you possibly can use something like well trained stun ray (and/or boosted willpower). Waking archmage, IMHO, is critical point at mana temple. A root is a flower that disdains fame. Kahlil Gibran(1883-1931) |

I did use slow monster on myself vs a great red wyrm. I was wearing RDSM and all he was doing, was breathing fire at me. So that seemed safe enough. I was sorely tempted to try it vs the greater moloch I killed, but chickened out. It was still satisfying, to kill a monster that had 100 PV. Again 'find weakness' is awesome. I can only bling nine spaces. I have decided to do the game without using wands or potions (like blindness/confusion) if possible. I didn't need them against anything so far, and I will give it my best shot, to do the rest without them. Just did the Mana temple. Scratch one Archmage. I did kill 183 chaos servants to get to him, so now they can poison me quite easily. I have some regeneration items though, so I should be OK. The Archmage himself was easy. My plan was to lead him to the stairs, so that I could have a quick escape route if he confused me. I noticed a long narrow tunnel though, and decided to try it a bit differently. I dug out some of the tunnel, to make it two spaces wide, instead of one. When the Archmage came to stand in the narrow part of the tunnel, I stood one space out of line with him. As long as he had a clear shot at me, he did not advance. With him blocking the tunnel, none of the chaos servants could interfere. He kept shooting only ice and 'glowing ball' attacks at me, which did no real damage. I shot back at him, while he was standing in the dark, I couldn't see him, but I could hear him scream. I needed no potions or wands to take him out. The critical hits and a high willpower stat were enough. I did have to use a PoEH though, I wanted to test how I would fair, standing IN line with him and fighting. I quickly stepped back out of line. Now I am crossing into D:50. I am concerned about the balors and (now) chaos servants, but I am not worried about corruption. I have two more wishes to spend on SoCR. I thought briefly about wishing for a potion of uselessness, to throw on D:49, but it's too likely I would get a melee weapon. I think if I don't need to use the wishes for SoCR, I might wish for a PoU on the way back, just to see. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

What this game of yours does prove, gut, is that Fling the Bling CAN be done! Next time without mistakes :) EDIT: Of course, without that wish for Find Weakness it'll be a LOT harder... Criticals took him out quickly. 333 red worms // The ACW was not as dangerous as these. // In the right circumstances anyway. 3 werewolf kings // Very annoying. What I learned: Very surprised in general, how effective coin throwing can be. I used to think it was kind of stupid, but killing a greater moloch with nothing but coins... is hillarious. It's kind of funny, just how fast the dungeon levels get littered up with coins. It doesn't take long, before you stop picking up the coins you throw. It does create a funny picture though, traveling through a level that has seen some previous heavy fighting. The inside of the arena looks like a shopkeeper exploded in there! It is surprising, even for a merchant, how much gold is aquired. When you are selling off EVERY melee weapon you find, EVERY offensive wand, SI by the ton (because of carrying cappacity), ore of all sorts (if you are not smithing), non-useful gems by the ton and even a few normally useful scrolls like increase melee damage. There are some monsters that are quite a bit easier, or at least more pleasant to deal with, when your not using melee weapons. Here is a brief list: Ochre jellies, can't corrode if you don't hit. Ratling duelists, can't disarm a shield. Karmic lizards, VERY nice, to not have to worry about accidental 'curse/dooming' hits. Cats, just be careful about holding down the 't' key. In fact, I was thinking a bit, about doppleganger kings. I never ran into one, but I was kind of wanting to. They copy so much about a PC, I wondered what one would do, upon seeing that I have NO melee damage? Would he start flinging bling at me? Well, that is it for this challenge. It was very fun, and I will certainly do it again sometime. Just not right away. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! [Edited 1 time, last edit on 2/20/2008 at 19:58 (GMT -5) by gut] |

Wow. Just wow. Very major congratulations on this. I always thought of this challenge as a pure joke, but you managed to get a char that could mop up all the main enemies and a greater moloch to boot. This is quite an amazing achievement! What would you say was the most difficult part of the game other than D50? By the sounds of it you actually had an easy enough time near the start and end, but the mid-game had its troubles. The early game was pretty safe. Due to missile talents, and gaining quick exp. level ups, I was able to survive the early game threats. Bees, spiders, mimics and the rest could all be taken out at a distance. The only REALLY dangerous fight was against the necromancer in the Griffyard. I rushed into that fight because I wanted the PoEH from Thrundarr. I almost died. If I do this bling challenge again, I will certainly prepare better for Nonnak. In a way, it seems like most of the things I was worried about, turned out to be pretty easy. The ACW, ASB, earth elementals, balors and so on. On the other hand, some of the things I normally don't even think about were very dangerous. There is just no way to express how frustrating breeders can be to a blinger. If anyone dares say that's not a legit fling the bling win because you hit some monsters by accident, and didn't even kill them, well.. I'll just hope they get cancer. Seriously, some of those restrictions are STUPID. Like, no sacrificing monsters. Why not? It's not like you're killing them for the xp, as sacrificing monsters gives pitiful xp, why the increased challenge for crownings? No WoD ending because the WoD might put a dent in a balors armour before you flee? Instead you're supposed to take advantage of a "feature", and lock a god damn rat inside some god damn doors and then "win" because, supposedly, monsters that can normally bash doors wouldn't break those flimsy wooden doors and flip the switch after you left the level. This is better than ACTUALLY making the portal useless by destroying the levers, how? Someone please explain this to me. OMG, you gained 20xp because a kobold died to a wand blast when you were already xplvl 50, YOU DID NOT FLINGETH THE BLINGETH! Give me a break. Congrats on the awesome win. I do understand Lv1 char accidentaly running into something. I knew that the chances of having a PERFECT victory were pretty slim, this was my very first time of attempting this challenge. The first PC I created, finished the game, so I had to learn the ropes as I went. Next time through, I'll know what to avoid. It doesn't bother me that I made a few mistakes, I know they didn't help me. I agree with a lot of what J. is saying, and for all PRACTICAL purposes, this is a 'fling the bling' victory. It's just not a perfect one, so it's not official. It kind of reminds me of when I was first trying to get the RotMC. When I accidentally killed a cat, that was out of my line of sight. I tried to convince myself that it wouldn't count against me. I didn't do it intentionally, and the game could hardly hold me responsible for killing things, I didn't even know were there. Could it? Yes indeed it does. It has to be PERFECT, else it doesn't count. That's ADOM. Having said that, there is a BIT of forgiveness with Bart training. If you accidentally bump into a few monsters early, and gain a few marks, those marks can be wiped away. As long as you don't gain a skill level, the Bart training will set them all even again. The 'wand of ANYTHING' victory is cheap, but corruption is horrible on D:50. It takes a loooooong time, to bling all those summoned monsters to death. If you don't have an extra ~6 blessed SoCR in your pack, you will face real corruption trouble. Good luck with your character Soirana. I hope you get an official victory. With the 'find weakness' skill, it is cerainly possible. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

If 52 kobolds die to your WoD blast when you destroy the levers it's ok. If 52 jackals&jackalwares ambush you in the wilderness when you're lvl 5 and surround you and you use a wand to kill them and escape it's not ok. Savescumming is never ok. Well, that's that, J. When is killing 52 kobolds with a wand of destruction ok and when it is not? Where is the line? When does a bunch of trees cease to be a bunch of trees and become a wood? I agree with Soirana here. If you make rules for a challenge game, you adhere to them. If you make mistakes that make you lose the challenge, that's life for you. I mean, what's the point of imposing these huge obstacles for you to jump over, if you stumble and fall only to say "Oh well, it was only one inch missing on that one, let's just say I did the jump"? gut played a phenomenal game that demonstrated his ADOM prowess to all to witness his tales, and proved once and for all that Fling the Bling is possible. >If 52 kobolds die to your WoD blast when you ?>destroy the levers it's ok. >If 52 jackals&jackalwares ambush you in the >wilderness when you're lvl 5 and surround you >and you use a wand to kill them and escape it's >not ok. i do not catch the diference. in both cases if you don't kill some mobs you can't win. Where is the diference between levers and jackalweres? |

If you set down a rule, which is "no attacking/hurting monsters unless by flying coins", then that is that. Follow it or forfeit. Bart wiping out weapon marks is...I mean the PLAYER would know what he had done, so...the game is easy enough to abuse, so it should work both ways. I suppose, for D:50, one could do that locked-door-monster-creation thing the guidebook mentions. Never done it myself, but that should keep levers safe and kill-count low. |
