Love the Brimstone challenge. I believe I was involved in it's conception back in those days.
I was surprised that once a toon gets viable it gets REALLY viable. Dragon hoards leave a lot of treasure behind and it's not uncommon to find the blanket or ring you seek so desperately.
Rings seem far more durable than blankets though. Expect to wear wands in the missile slot.
Viability comes when you get either
1) A source of immunity (crown, scale mail)
2) 3 sources of resistance + 100 healing (this will completely supress background damage)
3) A source of regeneration (my only really promising toon got viability through a knife of endurance, which are fairly abundant and very heat durable)
I only ever tried the lite edition on version 1.0. I was buff enough to take the wyrm down if I had found a source of digging... which I did not.

AshenP, my antisocial archer is currently level 17 and has found 3 randomly dropped fletchery sets above DT - so far, I spent a bit of time in ID, then went to the big room for herbs, then went and killed Terinyo. With the fletchery set I started with, I have like, about 20 units altogether, so once I hit my special fletching skill (I think thats 18), I will be going log hunting - if I have to kill enough trees to get 20 logs, so be it, although i am still hoping to find a hatchet at somepoint. I ought to be able to make at least 500??? arrows with that many sets and the archer special skill...so I am not too worried -

I am also training thrown rocks for two reasons:
1/ the tower if I don't find a RoIce - all my archers always train thrown rocks for this reason,
2/ Exiting cavernous levels. There are always lots of rocks, leaving a few 1d4-4 ones lying around is no big deal

Why herbs?
Did you get herbalism from a pot/scroll of education?

I'll prolly be training all 3 missiles, you never know which artifact you might get.

Why herbs??? Err, cos they are incredibly useful? No herbalism, just a lot of patience and a SoUncursing.

Sadly that archer is dead now, due to carelessness and an acid vortex in the TotHK, but nevermind.

Herbs are very useful, I just thought they were hard to farm without herbalism.
If I got an early wish, I'd prolly use it on herbalism.

Good luck on your next try!

If I got an early wish, I'd probably NEVER EVER IN A LIFETIME AND THE SECOND AFTER THAT IN CASE REINCARNATION IS TRUE use it on herbalism...
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

just use piety to uncurse herbs. wield a stack in each hand, missile slot and tool slot. pray. bam - uncursed.

Piety might be pretty expensive for some PCs compared to a SoUncursing, or a couple of SoRepair.

Certainly antisocial PCs don't have much chance to make money (no selling, no Griffyard), and have less levels to generate altars (No DD or VD, no PC), and might well be gathering herbs in the hope of saccing them for a precrown, in which case using piety would be counter productive.....

Oh, and yeah, there is not a snowball's chance in hell that I would ever wish for herbalism. Farming without it just takes a bit more patience.

I had another promising antisocial archer die during the weekend - stupid shop generated in D:1 of the CoC. Managed to kill the shopkeeper, but had no invis, so the thugs got me. Shops before the big room are likely to be killers unless you have some invis from the ID....

I just finished your archer challenge with my second archer (first died to ants in UD1).

Notable events:
rolled until I got a unicorn, went to small cave/UD.
found a lawful altar in UD, 2 chaotic sacs to bring it to neutral, 3 neutral sacs to bring it to chaotic, 1gp sacs till I became chaotic, pre-crowned with emerald dagger, crowned with elven longbow at 8th level, killed wand shopkeep near HMV exit.
passed through HMV, went to pyramid, killed an old barbarian, then assassin cave (nearly died to prince (2 blessed ultra healings and 3 extra healings used), then id, found fletchery kit in id6 (assume it's DL2), did id6-8 until I got 7 kits, gathered logs in forest.
did fire tower with fireproof blanket but no ring of ice, 2 arrows from stack would get burned every 50 turns or so, another altar in fire tower, did rift/library (needed an amulet of perserverance + boost willpower potion to get in), then mino city, then RoHK, darkforge, mad minstral, returned to HMV to clear it out, then cleared holeinthewall, cleared terinyo, killed (and nearly got killed by) mommy dragon, then started CoC dive.
found bracers of war in shop while eradicating dwarf town, found dwarf halls so skipped tree level, killed khelevaster, dug up graveyard (gained 9 To which helped offset the dark elf corpses I had been eating earlier), killed eg (he didn't respawn while standing on stairs), found 3 arts in casino.
found 5 more arts in 2 undead greater vaults (2nd vault at d42 had both xbow and sling arts), killed AKW without getting needle (I guess you have to do the quest to get needle), killed archmage without even seeing him.
got preserver from useless potion, cleared d50, I drifted slightly from the challenge requirements here because I closed the gate, I wanted to get a decent message in the memorial file, and I didn't think it was that big a deal, I then left ancardia.

Comments:
I got 3 wishes this game, used the first 2 for scrolls of education, and the 3rd for find weakness. First came from a pool, last 2 came from a Wand of Wish with 1 charge.
I never did bugs even though dex and speed are the two most important things for an archer since I was sure that having a 1 will would get me killed with no herbalism.
As it was with around 16 base willpower, emperor liches were a nightmare and I ran into many of them. The archmage wasn't a problem, however, since I never even saw him.
If I had herbalism, it would have been much easier going with ~70 dex and ~180 speed from bugs and much less hassle from confusion casters due to higher willpower.
I found no morgia that game, and moving a patch is really hard without herbalism.
Everything considered, the hardest parts of this game were the assassin prince, mommy dragon, and dealing with confusion.
Killing the prince at 45 is easy, but in the 20s he's scary.
Mommy dragon gave me 7 levels when I killed her (from 23 to 30).
Caverns were really no problem at all.
I kept my perception at 16 where it started for the longest time, but then decided that was silly, and carrot juiced it up to 22 around mid-game.

Going after momma dragon was a bit of a risk, but well done on making it. Sun's Messenger at level 8 must have helped significantly :)
Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse."

Cool, nice one AP :)

I have mostly been killing gut juniors recently... Damn pyramid keeps killing them off. The more anemic my PCs are, the more I have learned to hate the pyramid... Entering at level 13 with no fire magic and no invisibility is fair enough, as long as you don't get too many OOD monsters... then you hit the top level and a lightning vortex is spawned next to a dark elven priestess. Rape rape rape rape. Whatever. Grr.

Thanx.
If it's ok, I'll post the vlg file here.

Sun's Messenger was a good crown, but any of the missile weapon arts would have been good, and if you crown with one of the missiles, you also get a nice bow or xbow and a bunch of ammo to go with it.
Really, the only bad crown for archers is the boots, so it's a 5/6 chance for a good crown.
Archers and barbarians have the best crowning selection I think.

I actually could have crowned before 8th level, but I waited till 8 so I could get a pre-crown as well.
Even though I never used the emerald dagger, I might have gotten one of the good randoms like BoW or the pick axe - I think it's worth a shot.

I've never had problems with the pyramid other than the traps there.
Going in at 16 helps, and 1 pot of invis usually lasts long enoung to get the ankh and wrappings, which make the rest of what's up there easier.
If all else fails, you can also go down the stairs, heal and go back up.
The rewards of the pyramid are so very worth the effort.
That archer used the ankh and mummy wrappings for most of the game.
