how exactly is it done? It is simply going up/down stairs rapidly hoping that a good item will be generated next to the staircase? Or is it cleaning out the levels? Sorry for the ignorace o_O |

both are correct. though cleaning out the level would be more like leveling up in the ID & less scumming. A middle ground would be to walk a few paces on each level and only stay if you sense a certain tension. |

You descend, scan the room for items, if no good ones are generated, ascend and repeat. Levels 1 and 2 are good for books, 3 and 4 for blink dogs, 6 and 7 for potions of water, and 9 and 10 for mithril items. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

Well, blink dogs can also be randomly generated while exploring the level in question, so climbing stairs for hours on end... I'd rather explore level 3 and 4 completely, repeatedly. What's nice about blink dogs is in the course of teleporting around like crazy, they usually end up near you at some point. If they're hostile, that means battle, and if you're smart, nice chances for a corpse (don't kill a blink dog if it is the last one alive. Preferably, name the original blink dog and avoid killing it because it has the best chances of summoning more). If they aren't (i. e. you are lawful), well, at least you know there is one. Keep a ranged weapon handy to aggro them, unless you really really care about your alignment - the hit you take for attacking blink dogs isn't big. You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? (123456789) 4 Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! |

Just go up and down between ID levels 3 and 4 until you see one. Name him so he doesn't get lost in the shuffle, and attack him. I advise either kicking him on coward mode, or throwing something like a scroll at him. Run circles around a room until he summons, and kill the summons until you get your BD corpse. Now that you have TP control installed, you need on demand teleportation : ) Get a scroll of magic mapping/scroll of item detection/wand of item detection/crystal of knowledge and go to the VDDL. There is a guaranteed wand of TP in a secret room there. Explore the level, zap/read your wand/ scroll and use a teleport trap to retrieve your wand. Now teleport raid DF : ) Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! [Edited 1 time, last edit on 8/26/2008 at 18:27 (GMT -5) by gut] |

hehehe, you read my mind ;P thanks a lot. the first character i used stairhopping with just died while exploring for blink dogs on ID3/4...in short i was being dumb, but either way, i did find two books of teleportation on ID 1-2, as well as many many other useful spells. stairhopping is awesome ^^ |

It's also hella cheap. But giving up stairscumming is hard enough I imagine - need some kind of replacement drug. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! |

im not entirely sure how/why stairscumming is frowned apon...imo stairscumming is your CHARACTER taking advantage of the world around him. either way, it's effects are incredible. I spent most of a day looking for a spellbook of remove curse (didnt find it). on the way i found 4 potions of gain attributes, got 4-5 carrot rooms (PE 43 now), and probably now know more than half of the spells in the game. all at level 10, it's mindboggling. :O |

Cheap shmeep. Don't let anyone tell you how to play. On these forums (others too, but these are the worst) I've heard people call just about everything 'cheap'. Blinding, stunning, or confusing monsters before killing them, that's 'cheap'. All monsters must be in absolutely perfect health before killing them, otherwise it's just plain 'cheap'. ID stair hopping is 'cheap' and should be avoided at all cost, because (somehow) it's just more... uhh, 'respectable', to aquire hordes of items in other ways. You shouldn't spend ten minutes in the ID, but a marathon session in a cavernous level or the big room is fine, and the only way to not be 'cheap'. Enjoy your spider factories : ) Oh yeah, don't you dare teleport yourself to any point on any pre- generated map. That's 'cheap' you see. It doesn't matter that you have seen the map before, and know where the monsters, traps, and stairs are located. You must pretend as though every trip through a level is your very first. You must kill every steel golem before looting DF, because it's 'cheap' to loot before killing. You must stumble around in the lower left hand corner of the pyramid, because it's 'cheap' to avoid all those traps and sickness-causing mummies. You must somehow forget what square the water dragon's momma always stands on, because the only player that would pass up the opportunity of drowning to death, or getting blasted by a dragon turtle... is a 'cheap' one. I could go on about the things people call cheap (as it's actually quite fun), but there's no need to. I think that something being 'cheap' is all about playing experience, and the difficulty of the challenge ahead of you. I say use everything you can think of, to improve your PC, until you get at least one no-savescum victory. Only then should one start adding restrictions. I suggest eliminating the most boring ones first, like smithing, ID stair-hopping, and precrowns. Then try doing without the ultra-powerful technique of herb farming (extremely difficult). Finaly, cut out prayer, then you'll notice how uber-powerful it really is : ) I use tactics that some call 'cheap' all the time. In fact, these 'cheap' tactics are the only way some challenges can be completed at all. I wonder if those who are the first to say 'cheap' did use the ID, herbs, smithing, pre-crownings, casino gold, slaying ammo, and so on, in their first victories : ) Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

"All monsters must be in absolutely perfect health before killing them, otherwise it's just plain cheap'." Sounds like a fun challenge for a true beserking barbarian. How far can you get in the game using only one hit to kill a monster. Any monsters you fail to kill after your first attack must be left alone until they are fully healthy again, whereupon you can try again. Suspect game completion would be impossible - even a high level mighty striking barbarian with grand mastery in Executing or TriRed Roostering would probably struggle to one chop the Ancient Stone Beast, but surely fun to try. No dual weilding allowed though, which is a shame. |

Thanks for the support gut =P although in DF, maybe the spell/scroll magic mapping might be sufficient enough to calm down all the crazies? <_<; |

Magic mapping is of course allowed - nothing cheap about it. Of course you beter not go for the guaranteed wand just because you know it's there... But seriously, some stuff can be seen as silly to take advantage of, and others just sensible. For a first victory nothing is too cheap (though trying to make a char too perfect got me killed many times before my first taste of success) but as the game gets easier you'll find yourself having changing standards. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

You can in fact tremendous blow everything in the game in one shot except AnDoR DrAkOn himself. The multi-headed dragon, ancient chaos wyrm, MaLaKaI, and even the emperor moloch will fall to 1 tremodous blow from a slaying weapon. AnDoR takes about 6... |

There should be a new challenge issued...The Newb Challenge...The challenge would consist of someone completely new to ADOM with no access to Internet guides/forums or discussion with another player beat the game in their first sitting...What do you think? |

"I suggest eliminating the most boring ones first, like smithing, ID stair-hopping, and precrowns" I'd advice new people to learn how to smith, not to live without it. It's not really boring - you're not doing the same thing all the time. First find a pickaxe, then dig some (okay THAT is the most boring part). Then obtain an anvil (not boring at all), then melt down the ore(boring, but not too much RL-time), then (after skill-raises) smith (not boring, fun to see the stats increase). Stair-hopping and harvesting and live-saccing are more boring. Even if harvesting is almost a necessary evil. |

haha, found a death ray spellbook while ID-scumming on levels 1 and 2 D. Later i killed evil druid, a sheriff, a couple of ogre mages + arena ogre mage boss with it DDD. Imo, scumming should be done until one gets a teleportation book + eats a blink dog, after that you can be very very sure of your survival no matter what.
