A quick idea for Jan: if it would be easy to do, and you had the time, wouldnt it be cool to have a little thing that told you who was online? I usually wait for a response, wondering if anyone is even online at the time. Sometimes i get a response in less than a few minutes, and sometimes it takes almost an hour, and because i have nothing else to do, i just sit hitting the refresh button on the top every few minutes. Ive seen this on other sites, what do you think? What abbout you, Jan?

Because no ones responding, does that mean its a bad idea...? :(

Not a bad idea. Dunno if this forum software would have those capabilities though. Gotta wait till Jan comes online and ask him.

It would also be nice if the profile you get from clicking on a username told you when they last posted. That way it would be easy to tell whether someone had disappeared from these forums.

But some people *cough* me *cough* never go offline, because it's not worth the trouble of logging back in when you come to the site again.

Well there are not realy any limitations on the "forum software" seeng as I've written it from scratch myself, problem is there are no other features than those I've put in myself either, and I've been awfully lazy lately :P

That said a "who is online" thing would be relatively easy to put in (technicaly it will be a "who was online just now", but that's the closest you can get with a web service). Guess the forum is long over due for some touching up (search feature, more rovust and configurable "page counter", more administrative features (well most of you probably don't care about those) etc...).

I'll see if I can somehow manage to convince myself to stop wasting all my time playing games and actualy sit down and do some coding for a change... Sucks having high ambitions and low willpower :P

Maybe you should eat some morgia herbs ;P

Alright cool. Of course, i often have this window open while playing adom, and it would say that im "online" when really im just sucked into a game and not paying attention.

Actualy it wouldn't. Wether you leave the browser open on the forum page or turn your computer off it's all the same, the server can't tell the difference. All it know is when you last "talked" to it (loaded up a page)...

Once X minutes have passed since you last loaded anything your session will time out and you will no longer be "online" as far as the server is concerned. Leavin the page up makes no difference.

So there is no way to show who is onlne now, just who's been on within the last 40 minutes or so (logged in registered users have a 40 minute session timeout). Well I guess I could put a time stamp on them to show how long people have been "idle" or someting. We'll see.

Well, i usually hit refresh every few minutes, to see if anyone responds. It still sounds cool, just to see if anyone was here in the last 40 minutes.

About that search function: are you ever going to implement it Jan? AFAIK(that's from fall 2001 I think) it's always been up there but you just haven't got around to making it :) Either that or maybe just take the word search out of the upper right corner altogether :)

If you plan on making some sort of "who's been online in the past 30min" it would be real neat if it also said their "idle" time.

No problem (well actualy it was a tad trickier than I had though, but you get the idea :P)

Irked me a little that I'm limited to one "application", means that everyone visiting anyting on the site (forums or not) will show up as lurkers... Have to add some kind of filter to that I suppose, so that only sessions started on the forum pages actualy count...

A few tweaks aside I'm quite happy with the result myself... Only hope it won't kill the server, some rather nasty nested iterating required to keep the list up to date, but frankly I doubht it should have any kind of noticable impact on performance...

Very nice :) I like it.

Minor bit of fixing, though--You've got a few typos on there, it should say:

* Numbers in parentheses are the number of minutes since the user last loaded a page. Logged-in users time out after 40 minutes (unless they manually log out), lurkers and anonymous posters after 20.

Hey, someone had to nitpick.

Yeah, as I mentioned in the anouncement, if you logg in with a different browser or close your browser and log in again and stuff like that you'll end up beeng listed twise (or more)...

I'll look into making a "filter" to check for duplicates and list only the latest incarnation. The sessions will still be ticking away in the background, but I should be eable to avoid listing them if another one with the same user is also present...

Oh and typos fixed (I hope) :P

Looks pretty good. :) I wasn't expecting that either, all the other boards I'm on only show all the members logged on for the last 10-15 minutes.
