If you count all the characters all ADOM players have played and won/lost, what do you think about the ratio of characters who have won the game and characters that died?

My guess is something like 1/500. (too optimistic?)

If you count *all* players out there, approximately 1/3000...
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

I've died thousands of times over 7 years. And won it eleven. And I still keep coming back for more.

I've played for like a month now, died about 30 times and won 2 (mostly because of lucky artifacts and shops that were generated)

Well I find myself bored most of the day so I usually play more. The 2 that I won were near the end of this month (or so, didn't really count) and as I said, I had a lot of luck with those 2.

well i've been playing for 4 years and won only one time in gamma 16(those were the days). I got lucky and found a RoDS. And I've died at least 2000 times, I know that as a fact, cause I've formatted or changed my computer 20 times. and i needed 100 deaths to enter BUGCAV...
BattleAxe, Adom isn't a game where you get lucky in your first month, or year as a matter of fact... Perhaps you've heard of the RNG, the most powerful "thing" in ADOM, it constantly battles against you. Even if you've found artifacts, RNG just let's you find them so that you could get a false sense of security(am I paranoid or what). I can't count how many times I've died with more than 20-25 artifacts generated.
If you've won in your first month, even thought I think it's unlikely, you must have one hell of beginner's luck... one suggestion:
Quit ADOM and go to a casino and gamble(not the one in the CoC)or play on the lottery, with your luck you might just become a millionaire..
For the Horde!

I have been playing on-and-off for about 8 years and have never won...my ratio woule be about 0/20,000 or something :-)

I am currently fed up with ADOM and have been playing other roguelikes (mainly hengband, zandband, DoomRL and Liberal Crime Squad).

For me the final straw was when my crowed hurthling archer was farming the PC2 for rocks when I was surrounded by summoners and poisonous idiots (DE Spider Factory) and eventually killed.

I will be back to ADOM...I always come back...DAMN YOU ADOM!...DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!

I love ADOM.

With the right race/class combo it should be easy enough to win consistantly. Also the spoily guidebook would be necessary to win quickly.
I started out with Trollish fighter-classes (Beastfighter) as a newbie without much luck, but I learned game moves. Then I found the lovely wizard class. Elven or something else that's smart-ish. I'm pretty sure I could beat the game at least 50% of attempts with a smart wizard, playin safely.

It's the reason I moved away from wizard, they're just too easy to win with.

If you count 'effective' playing time, and a month as 24 hours * 7 days * 4 week = 672 hours, then I guess I won the game in my first month as well...

Zero to several thousands. And I've been playing for close to four years. (Not the whole time, of course, but every now and then I play for many hours a day for a couple of weeks).

But this time I'll win. Or the next. Or the next. Or ... >_<

Oh yes, and I'm savescumming like mad, reading the guidebook point by point, and usually play gray elven wizards.

Which means I suck at this game, right?

It means you are relying too much on scumming and thus pushing you char in certain death (like running into the mana temple without death resistance.)

Okay, it's now one to about 4000 for me. :)

If you want my advice, Arancaytar... stop savescumming. You see it doesn't help you win, and you won't get better if you keep it up like that.

That's at least what I experienced. I stopped savescumming a long time ago. It took some time for my normal characters to surpass the savescummed ones - But I did it, and improved further - until I won.

I am seriously cutting back on my save-scumming, and things would be way easier now if I save-scummed. Save-scumming DOES help you win but only if you use it in moderation. How far did your best character go? How often were you scumming? What was the order you did the temples/quests/dungons?

Grey elven wizards hmmm. How much do you engage in melee combat. If more than half of your combat is in melee, may I suggest using paladins? They don't start with a spellbook but get a garenteed spellbook and wand of frost-bolt if they choose the "power" reward from the Keethrax quest.

You know what I think?

Savescumming is like smoking. Both are, sort of, Bad Things. Many people claim they *need* to do it, though, if they want to have any success at what they do (either living or playing ADOM). Some try stopping and get back to it again, some cut back on it gradually until they don't do it anymore, and some just decide to stop and never do it again, and it works.

The analogy is staggering.

You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.

There are differences too:
Savescumming is sometimes recommended to raw beginners (to help learn game mechanics, and experiment). Smoking is not recommended to beginners (=children).

Savescumming prevents death, smoking causes it.

Savescumming will normally become less attractive over time, while smoking is more addictive each time.

Savescumming is free, smoking costs money.

Savescumming is not something you might do after having sex. Smoking is.

Grey wizards - just cool.
Early game survival hints:
Talents: Long stride, then quick, then very quick will save a lot of ass.
Stats: Get a high learning stat. Answer questions, and when you see questions that cater to learning, hit them. You will have a low strength, so carry around large rations at burdened/strained to train it
Places: Enter the SMC, then exit right away. If learning is over 20, read all your books till they vanish (if not, read attack-spell book only twice) Then go to the ID, and stay on level 1 or 2 exclusively till you are level 6. Then stay on level 2 or 3 untill you are level 8. Read all books as you find them.
Voila: Play on normally. Don't bother about the SMC till you are a lot faster/invisibler/teleporting and it should be okay.

Wow, when I finish this character Ill take up a wizard then. What classes make BAD wizards. I usually play dwarvish paladins. I am like dwarves, don't like chaotics and would prefer other races over elves. Gnomish maby with the extra talent to help me out?

Gnomish wizards recommended by Echo :)

The trick of wizarding is to survive the early game, after that you can only die to your own stupidity or the RNG putting something especially nasty your way.

Actually, I start off most of my characters in the Puppy Caves. If they survive that, I know that they should be able to make it to early mid-game at least if I play them right.

After that, it depends. I'll either go after Kranach if I'm not yet level six, or I'll go through the SMC to get through the high mountain village.

Yes, I know that first entering the SMC at level six is incredibly dangerous, but I can usually find the down staircase pretty quickly.
