thought there no the best one but there are some global strategies of playing the Game.
then my question is
what strategy you prefer AND what r/c combo is the best for this particular strategy ?

I prefer to avoid melee, but i am not sure about my way to do it with H.Elf Archer and Hurtling Archer

It's not very wise to avoid melee too much, since missiles can't kill everything, and you can run out of spells.

I'd suggest a wizard using missiles a lot for this particular strategy

Play Dark Elven wizard and be happy.

Here are thoughts

Spoiler
Find weakness ensures a nice meele slaughter provided you wield one-handed but powerful something and a *good* shield. +to critical hits is very noticeable, making you quite powerful against all kinds of foes. Meele is quite OK for wizards - my last (oh, well.. And First :D) victory was a Dark Elven wizard got 'Purifier'(second in quality artifact mace) and 'Protector'(best artifact shield in the game) as precrowning gifts %). He ended up having 11 mace skill and 10 shield skill. He tore undead, unlife and demons apart in meele! And got something like 125 DV in 'coward' towards endgame.

Alertness makes sure you don't suffer from *any* kind of offencive-casting mages - they just won't hit you with their bolts most of the time! And it also helps to *greatly* reduce a chance of random traps to spoil you or your equipmant. And with a talent 'sixth sense' PC can evade something like 5/6 of traps!

"avoid melee" it means "if possible" ofcause.
Especially in early game (on xp level 1 a found myself too weak for melee) and the most nasty monsters have special offencive abilities in melee (corruption attacks, life drain etc)
that is why i fond of missile attacks.

the next thought i think is the XP gain is very good _anyway_.
so i am looking for a character with good XP gain at the same time.

i've tried Human Merchant - he have 90 xp. to advance to 2nd level !!! Have anybody play merchants ? My merchats were so weak... i can't suggest an early game strategy for them.

P.S. i'll try D.Elven Wizard but D.Elves had shown low XP gain.

and another question:
if a non-archer character to play what disatvantages it has in using missile weapon ((a) with or (b)without archery skill and (c) is it possible to get the archery skill in the game)

(a) With Archery skill non-archers don't get the archer bonus abilities, which are all *very* useful for PCs using primarily missile attacks. Especially the ones at Lvl 6 and 25.

In addition, only Archers and Farmers learn Fletchery, which is quite essential for a PC planning on using missile attacks regularly. Look at the manual for more detailed information.

(b) Without Archery the to-hit for missile attacks is lower, and there is no chance to hit enemies in the red range.

(c) It's possible. You can either wish for it or get it through a scroll of education. It is not a skill that can be learned *from* someone, though.

experiment says:
my favorite skills are all combined in a Gnomish Assassin !
Alertness + Archery + DetectTraps + Find Weakness
and it have only 120 xp to advance to lvl 2

(oh! another question: what affects a number of skill advances when level-up?)

Learning.

The higher your Learning is, the more skill advances you get. The base number is three. Somewhere in the double digits (around 15, I believe) you get an additional one, and from then for every five or so learning points another skill advance. I don't know whether there is a limit, but I got seven skill advances for my gray elven wizard with Learning in the higher twenties.

There also are certain star signs that give you extra skill advances.

XP's for D.E. wizard are *very* simple to get, for example, in PC:2. Your first bolting spell would be totally enough to kill all of them.
Don't forget to gain at least one level before you get there - increase your concentration at least to 80.

Your following XPs will come easily - just because you can kill anything, what punny merchants cannot allow.

DE wizards are not that good starting learning (which I think might be better than mana at the start) and they have bad regen. In addition to racial hatred from waldenbrook.

But skills are better than high/grey elves, yeah.

The best for a beginning/mid-level player might not be dark elf.

Someone mentioned merchants.
Like human merchant needing 90 xps to level.
(Bet you had a special birth message)

This character starts out without any PV items (unless you get lucky), and a weak weapon.

To help this potentially "kenny" character you need to play the advantages you get, which are:
1. 2 starting talents.
2. ability to throw coins well.

For starting talents, pick "long stride" and "quick".
When you start the game you go to inventory and put all your coins in the missile slot.

Now enter an easy place and throw coins at monsters. Throw, retreat. You should exp a few levels pretty fast, and coins throwing should improve (it does with level).
Be sure to use first aid every time you are hit (go to coward, use it once, then go back to regular tactic. This so you can advance it when you level, before you get healing skill up)

Soon you should be level 6, with a decent first aid, ready to complete quests and gain more.

I suggest ID level 1 for this phase. You might also find shields and other PV equipment that will help you live.

A lot of things can be even more lucky for such a character, such as:
1. You starting gear has some (random) PV on it
2. Good starting rings. You start with 2, they can be rings of protection (PV), mental stability (often PV), damage (better damage, right finger)
3. You are born in month of the cup
4. You get more starting talents. (automatic with 3.)

troll farmer with the birthsign that gives you 10% more nourising food

at level 12 the farmer food bonus negates the troll food penalty and by level 6 you can carry everything in the dungeon

if my game starts well, I can kill the raider, rescue the dog, and get to neutral so I dont have to kill the healer

there is one problem with bards using killer bugs, since they won't gain any xp or weapon skills, which makes the ToEF, Water Temple and D:50 kinda hard

Gnomish Elementalist here to. They rock. They do have some minor problems (Mana Temple since he's immune to all but Acid) but other then that everything's easy.

Still voting for high elven archers because of their powerful missile attack.

Somewhat frail, only halfway decent meleers and spellcasters, but still. Powerful missile attack. You can kill almost anything that's worth killing with that.

Although I agree the earth temple *is* annoying.

Hey, it's the only r/c-combo I've won with ;)

Of course it's a well known tactic. I know when to use it, too.

Luring about 50 grues and elementals through the whole level and slowly scratching them to death with daggers one-on-one (or two-on-one) isn't exactly my favorite freetime activity, though.

I never said clearing the Earth temple was hard. Merely annoying.

Yet, opinions may vary.
