So, you know how you can't get into the Bug Temple if you haven't got more than 100 characters played?

And you know how universities often image the hard drives of lab computers, so that anything on them is re-set to only what they want on the computers?

Yeah, so you see my problem :) Because, obviously, a freshly downloaded version of ADOM does not know about all the thousands of characters you've sent to their dooms beforehand...

Is there anywhere you can download the relevant files that let ADOM know you have, indeed, played 100 characters? Because if there isn't, I may despair of ever entering the Bug Temple...

Not this time :) Hehe... No, I don't have any classes in computer labs this semester. Not that I haven't been known to do that before.

Actually I play ADOM in computer labs because they have Internet access, which I don't have in my dorm room, and of course the Internet gives you nice resources like the Guidebook, RGRA, spoiler sites, et cetera... I downloaded the Guidebook for use in my dorm, of course, but the Guidebook doesn't have everything.

Anyways, yeah, Morio, that'd be helpful :) Expect an e-mail from me in a few minutes.

Forget the hiscore file, open the adom.cnt file in a hex editor and punch in a (integer) number greater than 100. Wolla!

Or just keep a *good* adom.cnt file on a floppy...no hex editors, not trouble, and you can keep a zipped copy of ADOM with it!

Happens to me all the time at work. I end up ignoring the bug temple instead.
You know you've played too much ADOM when you try to throw coins at people wearing similar clothes as yourself.

Ok, I uploaded the cnt files for both the winbeta and dos versions (I don't know if there is any difference), but I'm not 100% sure the dos version works since I don't play the dos version anymore, but IIRC it should work. Just change the names before use

If you're using Windows, you should be able to hold down Alt while entering the numbers 1, 0, 0 on the keypad in Notepad. I'm on a Linux computer right now and I forget which letter that is (if sad is right and z = 122, then 100 would probably be d or something). So if you held down Alt and pressed 2, 3, 1 you'd get the 232nd character, I think (since the coding starts with zero). That's probably how it keeps track of the number of characters in the HoF. ("if hof_count < d then no_pass()" or something like that)

Hm, I heard that ADOM generally uses only the 127-ASCII-Table. Maybe you shouldn't try anything higher than that.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

It's nothing to do with ASCII realy (except that a text editor will render the file as ASCII). The file contain a "raw" 4 byte integer value.

Each byte can store a value up to 255.

All you rely need to do is to change the first character to a value highr than 100 as described above.

have you read Jan's comment on this subject ?
.cnt file is only used when _generating_ a character.

mewto
finally you should to have
4-bites file
122 0 0 0
just check what you'd done with notepad by reading it with another reader (far, lister or such)
if the file is exactly of 4 bytes and represent an integer greater than 100, then the problem you have got is located elsewhere. (filesize is possible to display with almost any filemanager)

and stop this nasty Windows(tm) tricks like emailing single byte !

i beg your pardon for my english.
