I'm currently playing a Gnomish Archer, random choice, and I'm wondering if I'm wasting my time. Currently lvl 11, no time at all taken to get there, but starting to find it hard to do any damage with my crossbow.
Any advice on how to play this character will be appreciated.
Currently have excellent DV, sword of defence, but nothing else of value.

Gnomish archers are okay. Just pick the good shot -> keen shot -> eagle eye talents and the the talent that reduces missile attack time. What was it and what were the prerequisites, I don't remember.

Be prepared to run out of ammunition - you will eventually. Train your meele skills, so that you are not totally helpless when those arrows jus won't let themselves be found anywhere...

Also train on rocks, they can be created in almost any dungeon, and can be "farmed" easily.

To be precise, train on slings. Crossbow ammunitions are among the hardest to find.

Or get a boomerang!
You'll train both 'boomerang and scurgari' when throwing it, and meele skills when trying to get it back when it doesn't return.:D

Actually, I feel ammo seldom is a problem for archers. Fletchery, anyone?

That depends on whether you find fletchery sets, now, doesn't it?

Are they that rare? Even so, there is the starting fletchery set, and the hatchet from Yrrigs... Should be sufficient. It always was for my high elven archers...

Okay, that one is gnomish, and he is using quarrels, so I can't really talk from experience.

BTW, bomerangs *never* return after hitting their target.
Even more - returning boomerangs are usually non-combat - ritual things or toys.
The main aim of a combat or hunting boomerang is a lenght of flight - up to 200 meters. Accuracy also matters. In fact, a hunter has no benefits from a returning boomerang - he doesn't mind walking additional 50-100 meters to reclaim it, but if it returns to hit it's owner's head... Or a commrade's head %(

Nchurmdaz has a point, when hunting with a boomerang, you're not supposed to miss

Real boomerangs don't return after hitting? In ADOM, they do, even if it's somewhat illogical. In real life, returning boomerangs are not meant for combat? In ADOM, they are, if too rare to be of real use.

Remember that real life considerations are seldom relevant to ADOM.
