I'm intrigued as to who everyone thinks is the best character when put against another character in the Arena.
For example I'd back a wizard vs a fighter in the arena, all basics being equal.

If you were allowed a 50th level character,

Average stats 30 (you may adjust individual stats up or down, but the average must be 30).
Hp are based upon what a typical character type would expect to get based upon stats etc.
Resistance comes only from worn attributes,
Three artifacts of your choice
Five other items non artifact, but anything goes
(if slaying ammo, 10 per choice)
(if potions or scrolls, three per choice)
Three Talents
Three Skills at 100
Infinite missiles (standard, slaying counts as other non artifact)
Three spells, infinite casing.
Speed is basic at 100, speed boosting is allowed, but using the limits above (potion of boost speed etc).
Teleportation is allowed, but no control, and only by chosen spell. All teleport keeps you within the arena.
No intrinsic see invisible ability, only by worn item.

Let battle commence.

I'd have to go for a High Elf Archer agains pretty much anything.

If the average of the stats are 30 it means you have 30*9 = 270 stat points to use

St:70 Le: 1 Wi:15 Dx:83 To:55 Ch:1 Ap: 1 Ma:20 Pe:25

the artifacts would be "The Far Slayer", the ring of the master cat and because this character doesn't suffer from corruption and stuff, my third artifact would be the shield of raw steel

My other items would be:
10 quarrels of humanoid slaying
an eternium plate mail
a girdle of giant strength
an eternium spear
an amulet of death ray resistance

My talents would be affinity with crossbows, good shot and keen shot

Te skills would be archery, alertness and dodge

And finally, my spells would be (I suppose wish is not allowed :) farsight, stun ray and light

I guess that would be my character of choice

Nice idea to think about. Some extra ground rules I'd suggest: no wishing items of spells, all weapon skills at level 10, all spells at level 20 effectivity. I would have chosen an archer myself, but I've thought of something more fun (though it has its weaknesses):

Grey elven wizard.

St:10 Le:1 Wi:46 Dx:56 To:55 Ch:1 Ap:1 Ma:75 Pe:25

Artifacts: Trident of the Red Rooster, Platinum Girdle, Ring of the Master Cat
Skills: Concentration, Dodge, Tactics
Talents: Quick, Very Quick, Greased Lightning
Spells: Acid Ball, Darkness, Summon Monsters
Equipment: Potions of Boost Willpower, Potions of Boost Speed, Potions of Boost Speed again, Seven League Boots, Empowered Eternium Plate Mail of Power (if that's not allowed more boost speed potions)

The idea is to boost Willpower and Speed as high as possible. With max willpower darkness would have a range of 15 and Acid Ball a range of 12. Archers can't fire in darkness, and the high speed wouldn't give them much of a chance to fight back. Stand in the middle and the acid balls fill most of the area. If the archer has an amulet of light then the summon monsters spells can help provide a buffer.

You should have some spells at least - invisibilty would let you have another item, and slow monster could come in useful. Farsight would be necessary to avoid long-range archers that would shoot you dead before you saw them.

I'd prefer a: lvl50 mindcrafter, being my fave class. Heavily Willpowered, and etc. Confusion blast->No archer fire, Telekinetic blast->that barb just bit da dust, but he got some punishment with <-GMB.

why would you pick necromancy?

there's only one other person in the arena, so it's not like you could kill something small and sec it on them.

In case someone I go against decides that they want to summon monsters and they somehow find a way to not get killed. That way, when I wish for my banshee, she kills off any summoned monsters and if they're humanoid i can use my necromancy on them and use his own monsters against him.

I assume undead are unaffected by the banshee's wail? Also, given your tactic it might be better for you to choose a Necromancer rather than a Wizard, so that you can take advantage of their cheat death ability in sticky situation.

I think you might have something there. And as far as I know, yes they are not affected.

hmm, a necromancer with the chaos orb of elemental earth, would practically be unbeatable :D

The necromancer would lose half of his max HP every time he'd be killed... Until he has, what, one max HP left? Not exactly unbeatable ^^'

Would take a lot of deaths to get there. Though admittedly as the hp got lower it would be easier to achieve that. But even when you got to 1 hp you could still keep drinking any potions of toughness, blessed extra healing potions, etc, so that death never gets to pay you its respects.

I don't think that'd be any better than just trying to play a character that doesn't die at all ;)
