I started up a new character (another one: i only usually get to level 11) I usually play as either human or some kind of elven archer, but decided to mix it up a bit and play as a troll beastfighter.

i stumbled across a magic wand emporium in the scary cave (the one with the puppy), and a great idea struck me:

you see, on the floor before that one, i had run across a tension room filled with pixies (no joke: the pile of gold at the door was 3000 at least) and i still had a few pixy corpses with me.

so i grabbed all the wands that there were, and ate a pixie corpse.

then, i stood there. after about 15 turns, i teleported to the other side of the dungeon.

unfortunately, a dozen thugs appeared around me, and i was beaten to death.

anyone have similar stories?

anyone have any success stories?

Best idea is......don't rob shops until you're level 25 at least. I never do it usually, and learnt the hard way like you did yourself. Only time I've ever done it and been successful was years ago as a grey elven wizard. Some ratling had stolen my hard stolen cash, when I found two potions of toughness in a shop deep in the CoC. Picked them up, teleported out, and then acid balled any thugs that came near me. Shopkeeper got blown away with magic missiles down the corridor.

IMO though, its never usually worth it. Money isn't that hard to come by.
Ladies and Gentleman, take my advice. Pull down your pants, and slide on the ice.

I actually defeat shopkeepers ~lvl15 with magic users.
"I never do it usually,"
Confusing...
I usually pick up the goodies in Lawenilotehl and use Teleportation to escape. Then I use Teleportation again to avoid any possible thugs.
BTW, why didn't you just kill the damn ratling? The thief is manageable with the crappiest possible equipment, and even the weakest chars have no problem meleeing a Master Thief at lvl6.

I have several such store-robbing stories; most of them involve having a certain corruption and, as a rasult of that, unintentionally cause the shopkeeper to go mad at me...

I've twice come across shops full of spellbooks when playing wizards. Standard tactic, buy invisiblity, teleportation, strength of Atlas.
You can guess the rest.
Both chars died in dumb situations.

Another time I came across shop of potions very deep in CoC. Bought out the entire shops contents five times. Not a single useful potion ever produced. Killed the shopkeeper out of principle.

IIRC, robbing shops gives a certain penalty to the PC, depending on alignment. None for chaotics, curse for neutrals and curse+doom for lawfuls. Does my memory serve me right?

Are you sure, Battle Bunny, that it is not ANY shop robed that rend a lawful character curse+doom ?

I usually don't keep my characters long enough to rob anyone ... :-(

The GB says it only at the casino.
But maybe I'm wrong, I just tested it with a char and when I died it said "He was cursed"... who knows. I think it was lawful.

The GB is usually right, so I'll take it that you are able to rob any shop but the casino one without getting doom. Must I understand also that robbing shop is not suppose to make your lawfull (or neutral) character even cursed ? No penalty ?

Well, I don't think you'll stay lawful for long after trying this... Not something I would try with a champion of Law. Even if you *could* get away with it and stay champion... Is this what I became Champion of Law for? To be a criminal? (Okay, I really only become Champion of Law because of the chaos resistance, but still!)
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"

Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

off-topic:
Does crowning really give you the chaos resistance or does being L+ give you the resistance, champion or not. And why do you think/know so?

only crowning at L+ gives resistance. and C- is 30% increase in corruption rate. IIRC

I think that if you attack a shopkeeper in melee,
you get doomed, and cursed...

I'm surprised at your comments on shop robbing. I have a level 12 trollish barbarian and I killed dwarftown , terinyo, and lawinothoel easily. I then used the equipment to sac and got Vanquisher. That is the secret to robbing in my opinion. Sac then rob. Sac then rob.See where this is headed?

Why kill the shopkeeper in Terinyo? All he's got is maybe 500 GP of rations!

And about 50k in exp... I don't think money is the real option. Plus, even if it was I bet all the $$ the shopkeeper has to buy stuff from you he actually has on him... Anyway, killing the towns is no small feat. One of challenges (I dunno if offical) is to start a char, go directly to Terino and kill everyone. My farthest was a gnomish archer who killed everyone on one side and got the shopkeeper to crit health before he got to me and killed me (winged quarrels of hunting I have had go over some 100+)

yeah, I killed terinyo again today with a new char. I made a dark elven wizard and luckily got the spellbook of petrification and a wand of death ray. I petrified munxip and Guth'alak, had some problems with Blub, had to pray, then used magic missile to slaughter the rest. I gained like 9 levels!unfortunately I died when I attempted this on Lawinothoel too....stupid RNG...

And in response to Cat Lord Lord, you do get their cash. I did an experiment with a lvl 12 gnomish elementalist, and nine times out of ten I got the shopkeeper's cash.Though as Red October said, killing the shopkeeper in terinyo isn't good for food. Besides, if a weak player is lucky enough to kill him and the thugs, then he just lost a source of quests in the village, since they become hostile, and I died once due to starvation since I was reliant on Terinyo.

The cons of killing the food shop keeper are pretty high. Killing the Casino shopkeeper, on the other hand, is not nearly so bad. Especially if you let the casion restock a few times or play on some insane display size (good luck clearing the CoC graveyard though... Took my spellcaster a day of play and I wouldn't even try it with a melee class). If you're intent on waxing him though, I'd save him 'till after you do the quests available in town.
