I was playing a dwarven paladin and I was wandering around and suddenly lost 5 str, then I started fighting displacer beasts and lost 3 more!

What can cause random stat drops like that?

Possibly your char is either

wearing armor of weakness or wielding a weapon of weakness (can't remember if these exist).
There could be other reasons as well, but if you're losing strength so fast I can't see other viable explanations.

maybe a corruption kicked in that gives a penalty to strengt, or a strengt boosting piece of equipment of you got destroyed. In these cases however you're base strengt score remains the same, you can press B (shift-b) to see your base stats scores to see if they are the same.

There is only one corruption with strength penalty, and it gives -6.

I think it really could only have something to do with the weapon you're wearing.

You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"

I was still using the mace and plate mail I started off with.

Spoiler
I had just passed through a room that gave the "Images of books and comfortable chairs line the walls. Suddenly the images fade away!" message, which reduces your str by one, other than that I have no idea what happened

Did the room that you were in have a special room message? There are soom with yet unknown effects, maybe we're on to something here.

I don't believe I ran into another room with a message after that. I really can't think of any reason for the random str drops to happen. Perhaps it was a bug *shrug*
