ok, everybody: we're going to compile a list of really, really bad ideas.

i'm speaking of things that should be really obvious, but you've done them anyway.

(try to make them things that you actually have done, and not just a hypothetical)

1) don't kick beehives.

I just lost a troll barbarian with a frozen eternium sword in the unremarkable dungeon.

instead of just waiting there for the beehive to empty, i tried to destroy it faster, thinking that kicking the beehive would speed things up. the room had, literally, two empty squares left. i managed to destroy most of them, but died of acute blood poisoning the next turn. :(

Kick items off of an alter while not paying attention.

Yes, I shattered the Altar, and was about 2 or 3 live sacs away from a precrown on a lawful altar with my Trollish barbarian >>

Stupid Monsters keep picking up junk items i alreaded identified and dropping them on the altars as i sac them.

Dropping your Si's and Big Punch and other useful saccing fodder in Dwarftown without enough doors to protect them, only to come back later and find out some damn dwarf has been and picked them up and wandered off. GRRR!
Ladies and Gentleman, take my advice. Pull down your pants, and slide on the ice.

Finding a room of extremely experienced ogre emperors on DH2 and deciding to fight them all with a level 20 priest. After getting bored of using invisibility and frost bolt I decided to melee the last one left, who promptly berserked and killed me. Third best character ever...

Trying to change alignment by saccing small amounts of gold when carrying several million pieces and wearing a blessed girdle of greed. Got my equipment cursed and was instantly crushed to death - my second best character ever.

Entering the Chaos Plane and taking off the Trident of the Red Rooster before starting to fight Andor Drakon (I decided to put on a spear and Protector instead). Killing him then caused by character to be transformed into a "miserable and wretched chaos servant" before dying after saving the world - my best character ever :(
Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse."

Picking up wands of wishing from the Water Dragon's loot. Believe me, she's gonna teleport next to you and use your breathing attack. You'll die.

Not using an amulet of life saving when foolishly trying the above.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Reading a blessed scroll of familiar summoning in the SMC, generating an ancient karmic dragon, having it follow you to Terinyo and kill a farmer for a certain quest, then standing by in a horrific stupor as it goes about the minor task of killing Guth'Alak...

Also, dropping all your gear to identify a large pile of loot, then picking it up again, only to discover that you had forgotten about the mana battery corruption...

I was just looking through a couple of flg files and I noticed something very similar and stupid on my part...

these characters were created many months apart, and were doing quite well...both died in the DH to a greater mimic and mimic hivemind respectively...

I really have to stop messing around with tension rooms filled with mimics

You know, just recently, I had a character that died that exact same way, Naiyor... I was looking through the DH, and I was like "OOOoooh look, a goodie room!" Ugh.

Another quite stupid way of dying is to gamble at the casino with only a few turns left of your Strength of atlas spell and an un pleased god.
I found that out by doing so with a Lv 23 Gray elf wizard, hmm... or was it a Lv 32?

Anyway,
it all ended upp with me being stunned for a long time. Unable to get help from my god.

I think you understand what happened next...
Killing someone is always a winning argument...

About half of my best chars die by mistakenly shooting bouncing spells(magic missile or lightning bolt) in small rooms or in corridors.

About this threads title
"Stupid things you should not do"

Lets agree that stupid things are, by default, stupid. And should not be done.

I vote for "Dont do stupid things" and leave it at that :)

Ill add one thing on the stupid list.
* Failing to train your character in every way possible at every time is stupid.

I mean that it takes a lot of work to build a successful character, and there are a lot of things you can do to train the character before rushing into next dungeon.
For all characters:
* Whenever you take a hit, go coward and use first aid once (to train skill, it CAN save your life someday) - except mabye if you need to run from monster. But Im talking about 1hp hits from goblins too
* Every monster should be pickpocketed. To build skill and possibly get items which might help you survive (amulet of life saving - potion of ultra healing etc etc)
* Train a missile skill, even if you have a great weapon and don't need it now. If you don't wanna waste arrows at least train slings because rocks by early midgame are free.
* Use detect traps on EVERY door you come across (augh)
* Train shield skill (stand coward and take 10 hits from every monster. (zzz)
* Get 2 precrownings (yaaaaawn)
* If your strength is lower than, say 16 or so, walk around strained to train strength. Even if you dont "need" it (strength of atlas?). Every point of St give some hp(one point)

If you play a spellcaster:
* Read "useless" books ("knock" when you have 2401 castings) always, because it trains Learning
* When you have full PP and are not about to enter a fight, cast an utility spell you have plenty castings of. This will train Mana (and early game Concentration which is very important)

Well I don't do all this, too impatient. Especially first aid, I just let time heal me. But then I get poisoned by 4 spiders, and suddenly I find myself wishing I had better First Aid than 34...

And I only pickpocket in batch, i.e if I see 20 skeletons coming I might pick them all. But I generelly dont on lonesome monsters. But just mabye I could have picked a potion of gain attributes from it...(Potion is Dlevel 1, can always be picked)

And if I get something nice from 1st precrown, I usually dont bother with nr.2 But I just MIGHT have gotten something even better from it.

I guess the stupidest thing you can do is taking the game seriously.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.

To add to the list of things you should do to improve character:

-Use herbs as soon as you get them. Sort them into regular patterns, and make sure you have access to morgia and mareilon. Even if you don't have the Herbalism skill you can still use blessed scrolls of uncursing when you have heaps. And morgia works even when cursed anyway. Use sickness (from devil's rose) so that herbs can pull your stats beyond 25.
-Train with Garth. Lots of gold is easy to obtain, especially when you run into dragons. Get those stats as high as you can. Le and St are the most important, in my opinion - high Learning is essential for increasing your skills.
-Shield skill is good to train, especially if you have high PV so you can go around on very agressive to get more blocks. Spider factories can give you over a thousand marks in about 15 minutes - wear two shields, stand on very agressive, hold down 5 till you're gaining no more marks, then kill the 8 spiders around you.
-If you have the Knock spell use it on every closed door you come across. Early on it can save your life, later on it can save your equipment.
-Bless all stat-boosting potions. If you do a lot of pickpocketing you'll get lots of these potions, but it's best to hold off on using them till you have trained your stats about as high as you can already. Then use any blessed PoGAs first, because otherwise you won't get your potentials raised as high.
-Book-reading uses up triple PP, so if you want to train your Mana lots then book-read spells like Bless, Knock and Farsight. To train Mana you can also go around petrifying monsters lots, then kick that statues in the hopes of finding a decent wand.
-If you have plenty of castings of a Cure spell then be sure to train it up - even Cure Light Wounds is very effective when trained well. Sickness can help with the need for lots of healing, and also healing monsters will train it even if they're on full health.
-If you get the Mana Battery corruption then pick up or drop any wands you don't care about - the extra PP can be handy, especially from blessed wands. Be careful with cursed wands though.
-If you get the ape corruption and you don't care about losing the stats you have (or don't mind training them up again later) then let it stay for a long time and you'll get a brilliant increase to your strength and toughness.
