OK -here's my story thus far -dark elven Necromancer, crowned neutral w/robes of resistance (hell yes!). I robbed the casino shop (before crowning... more on that in a sec) via a wand of destruction. The Casino gaurds aren't particularly dangerous to me, but the shopkeeper is VERY tough. Basically I grabbed the best stuff, zapped my wand near the top left, and boogied down the steps under cover of darkness. Anyway, What was I gifted with on the next level? A greater vault filled with Karmics. Everything up to and including Elder Wyrms (or whatever they are -color-changing "W") fall easily to magic missile. (only a shame I couldn't animate the surplus corpses I got after I got all the way to intrinsic Fate Smiles... no Karmic Dracoliches for me :( ) There was an altar generated also on this level, so I converted myself back to neutral with a few gold pieces and then converted the (lawful) altar to neutral with more gold. Lemme tell you, nothing beats those Karmic Wyrms for sacrifices! Got crowned and went up about five levels, and there are still some Karmic Dragons and stuff floating around the vault.

But the damn shopkeeper is easily three times as hard as a roomfull of Karmic Wyrms -he shrugs off everything including Magic Missile at 50+ effectivity AND death ray, and he attacks insanely fast (My speed is over 120 and I have Seven-League boots) that I dare not even close with him (tried to use acid ball, he kills me in one round from well over 200 HP) even with a humanoid-slaying weapon (I have skullcrusher and executor both!)

So what should I do here? I've been able to scare him with Improved fireball, but I have only so many castings left and even with my 400+ PP I can't cast anywhere near enough to kill him.

I wouldn't fight him. He is tough. As a necro, you have teleport/control by now right? Just telport across casino if you need to. Just wondering, why rob casino? It's VERY easy to buy all the items.

The only time I killed him was with a ton of humanoid slaying arrows. It took a bunch to take him down, but I leveled up about four times at level 30-something for doing it.

I found he doesn't always shrug off my magic missiles -I'll have another go. Hard to play "keep-away" with him though; I can only barely outrun him. I'll give it another shot though. I can do over 100 magic missiles though, and regenerate fast enough that it's not an issue.

Ok, Try this.
Throw potions of blindness, sickness and confusion, try and paralyse him, wear rings of slaying and skull-execute him.

Got him. Backed him up against a wall, so my magic missiles bounced and caught him twice. Finally did him in with an improved fireball. Got four levels out of him! THERE's a reason to kill him right there! I'm level 33! cleaned our the shop. Couple artifacts; long sting and The Far Slayer (always good to have a missile weapon for when your spells run out). A few interesting amulets, gloves, etc.

Arghm far slayer. Really annoys me that does. I always seem to get crowned with it when I'm an archer, and all I want is Suns Messenger. Stupid crossbow.

I might have to try killing the old bugger then. Mind you, that means I have to get a game going.

Well, my archers would've taken Farslayer with kisses. I always train bows AND crossbows so I can use all those slaying missiles.

The really annoying crowning gifts are Thunderstroke and True Aim, probably the crappiest artifacts that have ever been made.

Not at all. Black book, black thumb, Whirlwind, and some others. Thunderstroke and True aim come if crowned with a good bow/xbow and some other missiles. Not really bad.

I won so I got to see all the shit that generated... Thunderstroke was in there... No clue where, mind you; on the floor of a vault somewhere no doubt. I've got whirlwind but it generated cursed and I never bothered to uncurse it; I've got Far Slayer and a composite longbow of hunting (or something like that). I may just have to go down into the dungeon again and look for all these artifacts that generated... The ring of immunity is in there as well as a few other interesting ones... Artifacts with mundane descriptions are bloody annoying.

Soaker is pretty crappy as well, now that I think about it. So add that to the black book or Black Thumb (Which I've never seen) or Cat's Claw.

Thunderstroke and True Aim would be very nice if they returned. BUT you can only fire them once. And even if they hit, they don't have any slaying powers and don't deal more damage than a proper slaying arrow or quarrel would do if used on the right opponent. That's why I think they are crappy crowning gifts - Normally from a crowning you'd expect artifacts that really help your character type, but the use of Thunderstroke and True Aim is very restricted, compared to Farslayer, Sun's Messenger or even Whirlwind, which are all very decent crowning gifts for archers. (Yes, even Whirlwind - It's the best sling you can get, and there are people who train in slings)

One of my early characters got very good with slings. He found one and some rocks before he had any missile weapons. So he trained it. Then I found a sling of the long shot, so it was no problem to keep using it.

I assume that the artifact missiles don't destroy upon hitting their tartgets; like all artifacts. Or do they consume?
