This is usually the biggest hurdle after the ToEF... What's your strategy?

I usually begin the battle by staying in the corridor before the temple, killing the monsters as they come, thus avoiding getting swarmed. If I have ?oFS's I often use them there to help softening up the inhabitants. I may also use magic missile to soften up the inhabitants if the char has it at reasonable level. Once bad ol' Nurgy shows up I either:

1. Acid ball him to oblivion (spellslingers)

or

2. Whack him to pieces (meleers)

So far I have only had one melee char (beastfighter, also my only melee victory so far) survive to mana temple, preferring to use spellslingers. Even spellslingers can become formidable meleers with practice and they have all those nice spells to help.

My Necromancer used the following technique:
Stood in the doorway and cut down the chaos people with Executor (any good weapon, especially humanoid slaying will do here). Got some of the eyes this way too -the will be an issue if you are a spellcaster. Kill them any way you can, including casting off hitpoints, if you need to. Otherwise focus on dropping the chaos people. Once Nuurag shows up, he becomes the priority target. If they eyes are down, read all your scrolls of power or otherwise restore your PP. If not restore as needed. Hit him HARD. Acid ball is preferred but he was seen not regularly shrugging level 60+ magic missile. Cast off HP if you must but drop him ASAP.

herbal blast + potion of blindness and humanoid slaying arrows then you reach main bastard.

from my wizardish memories --- boosting wi up to 64 and casting ball spells in corridor as soon as your power points being drained. i've killed majority of mana eyes before entering temple itself. later on blessed scrolls of power.

I can only agree with what everyone else has said. I've never had a problem with Mr Vaarn, I've always found him to be a pushover. I often find the earth temple to be harder than the mana one.

Spellcaster, magic missile, acid ball, anything to just clear things away. Stand in the doorway obviously.

Decent melee character, wack and keep on wacking till its all over and done with. Obviously for the main man, its some decent slaying ammo, or just anything that you are experienced with to take him out.

Spoiler
Earth temple is EASY. I mean, with EVERY character I've played that far, in casino is atleast 1 penetrating weapon. Along with loads of scrolls of damge, rings of slaying, the guys there are pushovers. With casters that works too, or use Magic Missile. Mana temple... can be really easy or hard as crap. One of my chars, got confused and forced into middle. No charges of wands, so took alot of Fire orb uses... Anyway, you want to stay in corridor. Stay up at front then keep moving back until the people are in corridor. The kill up to entrance. If your lucky, you'll have gotten at least 1 wizard. If not, rinse and repeat. Whatever you do, do NOT kill AM in middle. Then you have to kill all the other guys. Wizards... stand in isle and shoot stuff.

I didn't say the Earth temple wasn't easy. I just said that I find it more difficult than the Mana Temple, therefore highlighting at how easy I find the Mana temple to be.

If there was one Temple I could skip it would be the air temple. Friggin' equipment destruction...

What char did you go in as? I just walk in w/ a artifact weapon, anything that won't break, lure the people back out. Even the master summoner is a pushover. One humanoid weapon and hes done for. Anyway, I think all temples are really easy except for mana and fire (fire is REALLY easy as a mindcrafter).

Just out of curiosity: are the inhabitants of mana temple vulnerable to death ray ? I know ol' Nurgy isn't but how about others. If one had one wand of death and lots of potions of booze/boost mana or scrolls of charging one could supercharge the wand (some 50 charges should be plenty, I guess) and use it to really ease cleaning the temple.

My biggest problem with Mana temple is the time it take, leading to corruptions. I do it from corridor, slay all monsters as they approach. Load of exp, items can drop. As long as one remembers to bring perm light he isn't hard at all. This is the best place to waste humanoid slaying ammo. But I often take him in melee too, some stat drain, but not too bad.

You most often have the choice of taking the twin daggers to the fight too. They are good enough against him in melee to do it fast.

The Mana Temple is, in my opinion, the hardest place in the game second to D:50. I've lost 3 chars there. If you come prepared though, then it's not to hard. Just be careful and don't overestimate yourself. If you're an elementalist, that place is a real nightmare... hurr.

I generally destroy all of the normal monsters hanging around with pretty much the most effective spell I have, and then use Sting and Needle on Nuurag Vaarn.

Possessing a poisononing humanoid slaying dagger also works wonders. And don't get me started on humanoid slaying ammo. My high elven archer needed two direct hits and got two levels. It was the freaking easiest fight ever.

maybe I need to try an archer...
The air temple is bloody annoying. I lost a bunch of scrolls, books to it... I dropped all the REALLY good stuff (Chaos resistance sources, books of Acid anything, death ray, anything else cool), but couldn't drop it all or the RNG would naturally pick my worn stuff to eat...

Drop EVERYTHING. No, not just scrolls, EVERYTHING. Right outside. Waltz in, draw everybody, waltz out. Pick up stuff needed for fight OUTSIDE. Really easy. All you need to bring in is Executor, eternium shield, 1 stomafilla if you think you might need.

I always go into the air temple invisible, and take out the summoner as quickly as I can (he's the only one that can see invis). By that stage I'll have enough decent indestructable equipment to just drop everything else in a locked room outside.

I usually try to hit Nuraag Vaarn right away when I enter the mana temple, I stand in front of the door and fire a bolt spell or a missile to hit him once, since no one is standing in front of him from the beginning, then I just bring him down either with spells missiles or melee

Interesting strategy, FUNK.K. I'm about to take on the Mana Temple for the first time, I'm a L.31 dwarven priest with an eternium warhammer and a sword of sharpness as far as melee weapons go. I also have a crossbow of accuracy and human slaying quarrels.

I'm gonna try and detect all those traps and get the temple folk to follow me into the bottleneck of death. I have Hawkslayer (pretty useless, I think I'll just lock him in a room while I conquer the temple) and a great karmic wyrm, scrolls of power, amulet of light, etc. I want to bring my karmic wyrm into the temple for combat support but he has a bad habit of stepping on traps that are already detected and blaming it on me.

Could I read a scroll of monster aggravation and just wait for the monsters to find me while I stand outside the temple? I'm thinking that might be easier, even if every monster in the place goes after me I won't have to search around for the archmage.

I'm not sure the monster aggravation scroll is a good idea, since there are lots of duplicating and summoning creatures in the mana temple, and you still would have to go in and open the secret door to the temple, and the chance that all the monsters find their way out in a reasonable amount of time is pretty much 0.

Had my karmic wyrm kill the archmage. I kept missing the guy with my humanoid slaying ammo. Very annoying. Now it's on to the Rift or Blue Dragon Caves..

SirMason... won't that karmic wyrm turn against you eventually? And will you be able to defeat him?

I had an Ancient Karmic Dragon as a pet once(from a scroll I read in Dwarven Halls), and I wore the ring of immunity so if he breath-bolted towards me I could laugh it off. While I was walking to the up stairs in some floor of the CoC though, he decided to bite the hand that summoned him. Why? I don't know! No trap got set off, I didn't cast a spell that hit him, didn't shoot a missile that hit him. *shrug* A few swings of my eternium scimitar of penetration and he was dragon parmesan.
