The ADOM guidebook implies that it's important but doesn't seem to fully explain just what it does...does it fight chickening out? >.< Any explanation here would be great :D

It's actually documented well in the manual. Normally a character gets penalties to hit with missiles and melee when surrounded by several monsters (over 2 monsters for ighter types, over 1 for others). The more monsters the harder it is to fight. Monster also will find it much easier to hit you. Courage skill reduces these penalties, making your character just as good in combat against many as against a few. For wizards it's not so important, and in general you should be trying not to get surrounded, so often people don't consider the skill hugely worth getting if aiming for another quest that depends on your first kill.

I generally just kill a bandit. That's a pretty easy monster to get--they generate in holeinthewall--but not too numerous outside that.

I find the best are Outlaws, Giant Frogs and Assassins.
Or a mugger or beggar.

I like giant frogs too. They aren't all that frequent in dungeons, but if you wander around the swampy area south of holeinthewall, you'll encounter plenty. So you can avoid them easily, minimizing your kill count, but still kill enough to gain Courage.

speaking of unorthodox first kill tactics, giant ant workers seem 2 do well. in fact, some of the classes posessing healing skill can withstand attacks of the bugs, healing themselves gradually in coward, and then turning back 2 attacking.
another nice option is luring farmer, goodwife, or a child out of Terinyo

btw, in some of my games i had no outlaws, no muggers and even no beggars in "hole-in-the-wall", so the above tactics came handy

I have found that by killing a common monster(kobold, goblin rockthrower, etc.) first, actually helps you when going to kill filk: It forces you to want to go down far, and typically results in some nice benefits, lots a exp, good items, wishes, and lots of PoGA. Just watch out for Doppleganger Kings, my new most hated enemy...Turns out it actually stinks to be amazingly powerful.

Kill a beggar. Level 1 of the ID you'll find filk and get courage from a scroll of education. I have ways of guaranteing it.

How do you guarantee to get a specific skill from a scroll of edu? Savescumming?

I think he is advocating forgetting about Courage in favour of an easy finding of Filk.

I'm not sure what "I have ways of guaranteeing it" is supposed to mean, but if he's talking about savescumming he shouldn't forget that's cheating. And stair-scumming is an exploit at least.

It's impossible to do anything in ADOM any other way.

Seriously, this game is impossible to beat without scumming. Period.

You call it cheating I call it saying FU to an impossible to beat game.

Well I certainly can't imagine anyone winning the game for the first time without 1/savescumming, or 2/ reading the guidebook.

Unless you do one or both of those things, I'm guessing completion of your *first* game is close to impossible. Personally, my first win was after reading the good book, nice one mR Williams, but with no savescumming. That was some time ago though, and I am still searching for my third win...

ADOM is bloody hard. Thats why we like it so much.

The last time I savescummed anything dates back to what, six years ago?

I've won nine times since then. It is very much possible. It requires patience and training, and a lot of knowledge you're unlikely to gain without either the guidebook or savescummed games.

However, these are only means to an end. You can also get the knowledge required in a lot more frustrating way: Dying and dying over and over.

When I first found out about the HOF, I didnt believe that it was possible to win without scumming, and thought that all posts must be false. However having posted an ULE and a standard win myself, I know it can be done, although only with a lot of patience, and a bit of luck.
I dont ever scum now, I dont even bother to back up my characters in case of a crash unless I'm very close to the end.

Heh, learning to play ADOM is like walking on a mountain path at night, having no light source.

I learned to play this great game by save-scumming and reading Andy's great guidebook (it is not perfect yet though ;) and having won the game 57 times (IIRC) without cheating nor scumming, I can definitely say that it can be done =]

And still I always start yet another game, with different kind of character.. ;)
