Blessed Invisible Burdened
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This character is my first (non-save-scummed) victory after seven years of
playing ADOM. As you should be able to tell, I was over-cautious in most
respects, so that when I finally faced most challenges, they were pretty easy
to survive. I was surprised to win this game, because I usually play
magic-users; and this Beastfighter was randomly generated.
I didn't play a very "pure" game--I pickpocketed gremlins to find items I
needed; I dug out ten levels to smith my items to the max, and I gambled at
the Casino, doubled the winnings with dragons, and gave the resulting money to
Garth. (I could've used just the Casino rather than dragon-doubling too, but I
didn't want to spend days with a heavy object on the spacebar.)
But all in all, it's a first victory; I didn't save-scum or restore from save
files (except after a power outage once), and I didn't use piety overflow or
edit my save file or exploit any bugs (unless the dragons are a bug). I
consider it quite justified to use a few unrealistic strategies, if it'll let
me win after seven years of trying.
I started out in Terinyo, got some food, took quests, went to the SmC and
found the stairs down (but not the blanket), and then scouted around for
Kranach. It took me quite a long time to find him; and by then, I was out of
food. Thankfully, the Survival skill kept me alive. The fight with Kranach
itself was a matter of running away while I healed and could survive melee
with Kranach again. I think I must have led him and his goons around the map
at least three times before I took him down. Not being able to wield decent
weapons is a real problem before your Unarmed Fighting is at a good level.
Tywat's money came in handy for getting Trap Detection and Stealth trained.
I had meant to simply generate the black druid and come back to fight him
later; but by the time I had fought my way through the druid cave, I found
myself strong enough to take him on, with over 50 HP by now. I lured him into
a corridor and smashed him in melee. His corpse didn't last for a PoCC,
though. Darn the lack of Food Preservation.
I got through the Small Cave with no problems and got through to the HMV. The
shopkeeper there didn't like my orcish face, though; so I kept my stuff. I
found a nice girdle of carrying, so I had no trouble lugging it around.
I went down to the Arena, fought 19 times, and met a cat. Since I had no
resources for dealing with the cat, I just killed it. I wasn't expecting, at
this point, to last to the point of meeting the Cat Lord anyway. I have little
experience with melee fighters compared to other classes; and they usually die
against some monster that's more easily handled with spells or
missiles--paralysis is a big killer.
I found a nice little general store on D:9... and the owner was an orc! After
I got Literacy, I identified and sold my extra stuff there (clothes of
leadership and an amulet of the silver tongue helped), and came away with a
nice pile of gold. Waldenbrook wouldn't have been nearly as nice to me... or,
at least, wouldn't have been nice about buying my stuff. He was really nice
about selling his to me, though--In his shop was an amulet of life saving! It
was at this point that the game got serious.
I don't recall Thrundarr's first quest; but it must've been relatively easy. I
got Literacy and began using scrolls. By the later part of the game, with
Learning in the low 30s and Mana in the mid-20s, I was able to read and use
spellbooks as complicated as Improved Fireball.
The Animated Forest, with my lack of invisibility or telepot, was too tough
for me to cross; but I took a chance with the Dwarven Halls--probably the
biggest chance I took this game. Thankfully, it paid off; the stairs were
close together, and the only tough monster I met--a moloch--was easily outrun.
I had Detect Traps, so I didn't lose too much equipment in the Pyramid. The
wand of fireballs I got from Thrundarr came in very handy for defeating
Rehetep. I wore his mummy wrapping for a good part of the game.
While I was on the surface, I took the opportunity to completely clear out the
Gremlin Cave, the UD, the Puppy Cave (I didn't give the body back to the girl,
though--I had hopes of finding a wish later to successfully complete the
quest), and finally the dwarven graveyard. In the UD I found a pool which gave
me permanent invisibility and paralysis resistance (and doomed me; but I had
enough gold to remove it at an altar).
The graveyard wasn't too big of a problem because of the invisibility and
paralysis resistance. The only trouble was from the ghosts, which aged me a
bit before I wised up and just avoided them. I holy-watered the grave and used
the rest of my Wand of Fireballs to take down the necromancer. I wore the
Elemental Gauntlets for a good part of the game, but the Sword of Nonnak was,
of course, completely useless.
Bought the AoLS from Waldenbrook's; saved Khelly. My first SoCRs came none too
soon--my first corruption was the stiff muscles corruption, which would've
resulted in death pretty quickly if I hadn't been able to remove it.
The Water Temple was no real problem. As a Beastfighter, I had poison
resistance naturally; and I had enough healing to keep myself alive while I
killed the Snake from Beyond. I had originally planned to kill it in the dark;
but it moved out of my scroll-created dark spot, so it ended up fighting back.
Not enough to keep it alive, though--by now I had level 10 in Unarmed
Fighting, and a strength score in the mid 30s. The snake's corpse rotted way
too quickly to get it to the druid.
I hit the wall of fire, and at the time I had one fireproof blanket and no
rings of ice.
At this point I decided to go for an ultra ending. I switched alignments to
chaotic and went to see the old crone. The Ratling was easily satisfied--as a
Beastfighter, I didn't need artifact weapons. I think I gave him Big Punch,
the phial, Moon Sickle, the Sword of Nonnak, the emerald dagger, and the black
torc. The other quests went OK. Though it took me forever (and past the 90 day
mark) to get a boar skull, I didn't really stall until she asked for a potion
of cure corruption.
Time to start scumming for wishes or rings of ice or potions of cure
coruption--all of which I needed badly.
I robbed the Water Dragon in the dark, wielding two shields, but she didn't
have anything decent.
I dug up "Great Treasure" graves--I had death ray resistance via the mummy
wrapping, and a good supply of HP, so I wasn't too scared--and found two
fireproof blankets, but no PoCC.
Finally I resorted to gremlins. I dug out a big room for them, created some
water traps, and started picking pockets. Leery of killing too many, I also
used some scrolls of familiar summoning; but at this point I had a very low
Charisma--under 10--and I couldn't control my companions well enough for them
to be useful for anything other than random killing. Eventually I found some
7LBs, which was nice; and a ring of ice. Still no PoCC.
In between gremlin-scumming, I mined out some of the upper levels of the CoC.
The pickaxes, ooze-corroded, were easy to fix thanks to my gremlin-scummed
gold. Also, I met a couple baby white dragons and doubled the gold, making it
easier to carry all that ore via a girdle of greed (I didn't use the dragon
trick again until after the Casino). I ended up with a hefty heap of ingots,
Mining at 100, and Smithing comfortably in the 60s.
At this point I was getting carpal tunnel, as well as thoroughly tired of
gremlins and mining. I went to Darkforge to see whether the pools there would
help me any. The golems were tough, but I had spenseweed and I was able to hit
them consistently, so there wasn't that much trouble.
The Darkforge pools did get me some nice intrinsics--including teleportitis,
which led to my frantic blink-dog farming until I got the requisite
corpse--but I was unaware of just how badly they could age an orc until I
ended up at "very old", the point at which one hit from a ghost can kill an
orc. I got one wish and had to use it on potions of youth instead. When I got
doomed, I headed back to the CoC to get the dooming removed at an altar; I had
converted temporarily to Neutral for that since I hadn't found any altars
other than the Dwarftown one, and didn't want to go all the way back to the
Druid's cave to convert the nearest altar that wasn't guarded by a priest
prone to turning into a vengeful spirit.
The dooming-removal was going fine until, the third time I removed the
Dooming, I sacrificed a bit too much gold--I think it was 50,000 gp. I found
myself at extremely close and, seeing my alignment was still NC, I prayed to
see if I could get precrowned (being too lazy to count artifacts at the
moment). Well, I wasn't precrowned--I was crowned. Apparently, being at NC
didn't matter if you had enough piety; or else the display hadn't updated yet.
I found myself at N=, with cold immunity (Ugh!--I was wearing clothes of
carrying rather than my mummy wrapping at the time) and Preserver (OK... not
all bad).
Obviously I could no longer try an Ultra ending; but I still had a stronger
character than I usually had at this point in the game, so I figured I might
at least try to see whether I could get past the ToEF this time (the ToEF has
been my nemesis since I acquired a decent level of skill at all at playing
ADOM).
I had faithfully sold all my extra things to the obliging shopkeeper in the
D:9 general store; so I had a nice pile of cash now. I used it to train with
Garth while I smithed my best equipment with the ingots I'd collected. I also
used my gremlin room to train up my bows skill to 10.
I went to the TotHK, where I was extremely glad for my Invisibility when I met
what would've been a tension room of acid vortices if it hadn't been in a
cavernous level--basically 30 or so vortices just out in the middle of the
room, ready to surround and dissolve anyone they could see. Thankfully they
didn't see me. With confusion resistance from a ring of the clear mind, and a
wand of cold to make a bridge, the skeletal king guarding the RotHK wasn't a
problem.
In the low-20s levels now, I decided to do the Minotaur Maze just for the heck
of it. I only chose one wrong level, and it was pretty easy; but the Minotaur
Emperor hit very hard and took me down to less than 20 HP at least once. In
the end, I killed him. I didn't get much out of the whole thing other than XP,
which is something, I guess.
Having trained Climbing to 100, I jumped down the Rift. The monsters in the
dungeon were easy; the ones in the Library were another story. A greater water
elemental nearly killed me, but I had the presence of mind to teleport away
(via wand) and heal up before I came back and took him down. I also killed my
first ancient dragon and mimic hivemind there; both were mostly melee, with a
bit of teleporting away to heal. I had a teleport wand by now, and some
scrolls of charging; so that was easy enough.
I read the easier of the spellbooks (though I did get my toughness drained
trying to read a spellbook of something on the level of Acid Bolt) and waited;
then the Ghost Librarian gave me the weird tome. I went to the Minstrel to
trade them in, and while I was at it, I decided to give Bugville a try.
A test greater claw bug fell to me in melee rather easily; so I backed out and
changed to all my best DV-granting equipment, which was pretty good with all
that smithing. I lured the killer bugs away from the down stairs--I didn't
want to expend resources on them--and stepped down. In the first room, I was
surrounded by claw bugs; but they didn't have a chance to get close because
the combination of my Beastfighter's ability and my 7LB got me into a hallway
before I could be assaulted by more than two at once. After that, I killed the
GCBs from the hall, closed off rooms with a wand of door creation, and went
for the main room.
In the main room, I used up a lot of wand charges. I'd pickpocketed a lot of
wands from the gremlins earlier, and they came in handy fighting the bugs from
the entrance to the chamber; my high Willpower (water orb) helped the wands be
more effective. When I had killed most of the bugs, I slipped past the rest
and kicked the statues to smithereens, collected the loot, and killed the rest
of the bugs. The killer bugs in the rooms I'd closed off took more zaps from
the wands, though I did get half of them or so in melee. They did hit hard;
but their maximum damage was less than half my maximum HP, so I just kept an
eye on my HP and did OK. I killed the bugs on th surface before I left... I
didn't do any bug-scumming; the SoCR and other loot I got from the place were
enough in my mind, and my speed was already in the 120s.
The ToEF was only moderately hard, since I had prepared well. I had confusion
resistance from a ring, a ring of elemental mastery (I had found this quite
early on, and for some reason didn't realize its worth), a ring of ice, four
fireproof blankets, and some slaying ammo; and my armor had been smithed up
pretty well. I had only one ring of ice but didn't suffer equipment
destruction other than my cloak and bow, both of which I had backups for. The
Tower itself was fine; the heat didn't bother me any; but the AKW was a
moderately hard fight. I took out a lot of his cronies first, since I needed a
clear shot to him; then I lured him out into the hallway. I kept out of melee
range easily--I was taking a chance on my 7LBs being destroyed, but it turned
out to be worth it--and sniped at him with slaying ammo. I ran out of slaying
ammo, but by then he was critically wounded and I finished him in melee. I
cleared the rest of the top of the tower (yay XP), grabbed the orb, and
skedaddled.
I got to the Casino, and this was where I did the really heavy-duty scumming.
I played the slot machines, left the game running overnight, and came back in
the morning to something like 100 million gp (I think). This was doubled via a
white dragon vault I found a couple levels down; and I gave probably 100
million to Garth for each stat. This resulted in steady increases in those
stats over the rest of the game. By the time I was at D:50, most stats were at
least in the 80s, though corruption had lowered them some.
The Air Temple was pretty easy. I had a blue dragon scale mail, which kept me
from being hurt by lightening; and the rest of the monsters were ones I'd seen
before. I carefully kept Yulgash penned in his central enclosure until I
killed the outside monsters; then I proceeded inside and went straight to
Yulgash, who was penned in by his summonings and couldn't run. He was pretty
easy to kill, and he didn't summon anything too bad.
The Earth Temple wasn't too much of a problem, again because of my 7LBs, speed
in the 120s, and Beastfighter ability. The elementals could have hurt me if
they'd surrounded me; but my speed allowed me to back up slowly and still have
enough time to hit them in between moves. The ancient stone beast wasn't a
problem, though the battle was rather boring along the lines of repeated "hit,
hit, heal", and it took me a while to kill him.
I think I gained Grand Mastery with unarmed fighting sometime around this
point; but I'm not sure since I had been on level 14 mastery so long I didn't
notice when it actually happened.
I killed only one battle bunny before I got to Bugs. The whole affair was
rather trivial.
The Cat Lord was what I was pretty worried about throughout the game. I had
killed 30 cats by the end of the game; I think that number was about 25 when I
faced the Cat Lord. He's fast; he hits multiple times; and the hits hurt; but
I had healing available and was able to hit him back. Eventually he fell, and
I gained two levels. The ring would've been nicer, though.
I encountered a greater undead vault in the lower CoC. I had already killed
master liches before; my Willpower was in the 60s thanks to the orb and the
Garth-scumming beginning to kick in properly; I had death ray and confusion
resistance; and I had memorized several hundred points' worth of Fireball.
Therefore I took my chances with the liches, in hopes of a good artifact.
I killed a lot of the undead baddies--especially the ghosts, which an orc
should always be leery of meleeing--with Fireballs; and having good Willpower
allowed me to kill some of the liches through the walls. My MP didn't
regenerate nearly quickly enough for my purposes--no Concentration, you
see--but I had some scrolls of power, and I was able to teleport at will now
that I was capable of reading and memorizing Khelly's Teleport spellbook. In
fact, I took the entire undead vault in the same way I would have done if I
had been playing a spellcaster!
However, I did take some stat damage from the liches. I wasn't always able to
get out of melee with them; I had to stand next to some lich kings while
Fireballing the emperor lich; and my stats were drained considerably,
especially Mana. This handicapped my power as an ersatz spellcaster to some
degree, though my Learning was still quite high.
Results of the undead vault: The Robes of Resistance and several levels. Worth
it.
I took Sharad-Waador's quest and descended into the Blue Dragon caves, mostly
for the XP. With Preserver equipped and Lucky and Fate Smiles intrinsics, I
was able to escape without extreme equipment destruction. I didn't scum here;
I had the things I needed, including one ring of djinni summoning. My blue
dragon scale mail protected me from the dragons' breath weapons; my good armor
protected me from their claws; and my healing supplies took up the slack.
Barney fell in melee without much trouble.
The Mana Temple was easy with a Beastfighter. I found and dodged all the traps
easily; and I didn't need the mana points the eyes drained from me. Some
Fireballs cleared the way to the archmage; and I killed him in melee. Annoying
was the way he kept darkening the area, and I had to keep on lightening it
with my spell so as to be sure I wasn't stepping on the nearby altar. (I
didn't want to take off Preserver to wear an amulet of light, my usual light
source.) I killed him; but since I had gained level 50 during the fight, and
corruption had used up all but one of my SoCRs, I didn't bother with his
minions, who were pretty good with the corruption themselves.
Uselessness gift: The Black Tome. Oh, well--you can't win everything.
D:50 wasn't too hard. I teleported near to the WMoPCs and killed them with
Fireballs before they had a chance to multiply; then I meleed the rest of the
monsters. The balors hit hard but were manageable; Fisty hit harder and
required some hit, run, heal, and return before he fell. The Ghost Lords would
have been trouble without the Fireballs; as it was, I gained 12 years of
unnatural aging from them.
I killed everything I could see, pulled the levers, made sure there were no
more monsters on the level, chased down a last few baddies, and left.
On my way home I killed the black unicorn and had my corruption removed. I
still had that last SoCR.
So... first win at ADOM, after seven years. I'm pretty proud of myself.
Considering I have ADHD and usually make careless mistakes, it's quite an
accomplishment. Those of you who have won a dozen times or more... do try it
when you don't have any skill points in Concentration! I promise you it's a
challenge game you'll never forget.
