as i am lazy lots of bellow is copied from previous contests:) 04 13 Soirana's contest of cursed heroes: -Intro- Among all powerfull heroes fighting for or against chaos in Arcadia was a bunch of ones cursed by the day they were born. In they pride all these wariors, magicians, archers and mindcraftes refused to remove their curse and ventured deeper and deeper... Despised by many they were still a force which could change a world. -the Contest- The Challenge is as follows: The character will be generated on 2007 04 13 friday. (Participants can set the computer clock back if they have reasons. Do not start playing before 13th.) The character is random in gender, class, race and opening questions. No, you can't fix your dark elven farmer with pumping toughness due to good knowledge of questions. This is a honorable challenge, and i'll assume most of people playing Adom are such. You get one try. Take whichever birthsign you get, take the stats, take the starting items. And if you die, well, note your score and submit your history of your deeds. The goal is to close gate and leave without lifting curse from yourself. This challenge has serious drawback - in particular you won't get precrowned, crowned and any chance for ultra ending. and i'd gues no pool drinking as it becomes really playing with death. quick notice: praying might be aproblem. at least early on. don't count on starting prayer. Manipulating cursed status from intrinsinc to items is not wellcome. in particular you can't put on ring of doom or crown of science and proceed with sacrificied goodies untill you get fate smile, precrowns and after that get cursed intinsinc back and remove ring/crown. Your character is sort of proud of his curse:) quick notice:to my best knowledge in ADOm 1.1.1 you can get rid of curse before hiting very close in saccing nice heap of gold into spiritually invincible. You have been warned. Restoring dead or uncursed charcters via save-scumming is not allowed. Otherwise backups in case of computer failure might be sad reality. Wish engines are not aloweded. This means no book casting wish, no wishing for potions of exchange. You can transmute stacks of rings, 19 wishes is really more then enough. Piety overflow is not allowded. Anyway, iirc, it does remove cursing. Or at least praying at high levels does. In case your character becomes uncursed (reading unID'ed scrolls and hitting luck, for example) you must kill it in fast and furious way. Jumping into river in HMV or running around wildernees in cloak of invisibilty untill starvation kills you are very fine endings. in case you don't feel like comitting suicide -- save immediately and post circumstances and character dump on discussion thread. we will try to work this out. you can score extra if: * You get doomed before ToEF and remain doomed for rest of game. Sooner doomed, better value. * Will not wear items which gives luck, fate smile in whole game. and not get lucky by god's favour. * Intentionally miss Pyramid and/or Dwarven graveyard, Thomb of High Kings. * Kill some extra tough guys before or after gate closing. Tough are cat lord, emperor moloch and alike. * Wipe away Terinyo and dwarftown. extras are listed in descending order of value. neither final score, nor game turns are not considered to be a factor. we might have a draw... so what? Challenge will end may 13th. (for practical reasons it might be hel for a bit longer) P.S the real objective is of course to have fun. And survive the first 4 encounters... which is why i suggest you don't waltz a lot in wilderness. especially in plains. jackals came more often and more deadly. ideally you should retreat fom village to PC1 and get a couple of levels and some extra stuff there. ofcourse if you wanna jump into SMC.. well i hope you are troll barbarian in such a case. -this Thread- Is where you list your characters, and edit the posts accordingly. One post per person, use edit function. Yes, to edit you have to become a memeber of the forums, but if you are reading this then you really SHOULD be a member. And it's very cheap. Might even be free... Just put the characters details here, edit as it progresses, discussion and summing-up will be in other topics if needed. some ways to remove curse, which means dead character: -karmic corpses -scrolls of luck, i suggest keeping away from unIDed scrolls is clever idea. -high piety, i'd say get yourself holy water and possible lucky. -pools if you get your ass doomed you can undoom yourself. I'm not that sadistic:) quick notice: the only workable way is karmic corpse. high piety removes both cursing and dooming. scrolls of luck DOES NOT remove dooming. and remove cursing if both are present... pools are damn to randomn. and deadly in this challenge. sorry for my english anyway. p.s. if you manage to get doomed on first wilderness square and win game you can claim for a box of bear (in local understanding about 10L) if we ever met in RL(real life). p.p.s. since it is not yet 13th rules are under slight revisions. A root is a flower that disdains fame. Kahlil Gibran(1883-1931) [Edited 1 time, last edit on 4/12/2007 at 23:29 (GMT -5) by Soirana] |

My contestant: Illithid, female TROLLISH mindcrafter, born in the month of the cup. Edit1: It turns out my cursed character had some luck with him, infact, I think I have never had as much luck as with this char. Here goes: At first talent I got alert, aiming for the treasure hunter, of course. I entered the drakalor chain. First off, I changed my weapon to the quarterstaff, I find trollclub somehow jinxed, it always breaks after a while. Then I equipped my rings, ring of luck and ring of stun resistance. Feeling good about my strong troll char, I decided to go and try my luck with SMC. On the way to the cave, I came across some jackals(1st kill), I managed to kill all of them, thanks to my über-racial toughness. After the jackals, on the next step, a hoard of hobgoblins come across. “CURSED!” I say. I start the battle with half of my hp left and the hobgoblins are many in numbers. After fending off a few of the hobgoblins, I have less than 10 hp left. Things are looking grim, so I press the panic button. I point at the sky and shout: “Look, an aeroplane!” The hobgoblins fall for my ruse and look the sky behind them. With Cowardise, I ran away and manage to escape. I start to have bad feelings about the SMC, so I decide to turn around and go to Terinyo. I pick up the mad carpenter quest and head for the caves. The first levels of VD turned out to be nice in gear, I get Studded leather armor with +2 to dv and +4 to pv, and also a horned helmet [+1,+3]. In VD:6 I find a neutral altar, which I instantly use to convert to a much civilized religion. On the same level I find amulet of protection +2, a mithril sword of devastation5d8+9 and a large shield [+5, +1]. A nice level indeed. I start like being cursed, I could get used to this. Well, naturally I saved the day and the carpenter got his mental health back and I got some Healing lessons from the good man Jharod. Back at the village I seize a sad little girl and agree to help find her dog. I head for the Puppy Cave. There, I gain lvl6 and with it, Treasure Hunter-talent. I start to notice that my skills are developing really slowly, partly because my skull is as thick as a something in a something and partly because the dices are CURSED! Damn those minimal skill raises! PC turned out to be rather nice, I discovered a wand shop with wand of teleportation in it(although I was too poor to buy it) and a ring shop(which too had ridiculous prices). On the last level there was a zombie vault which gave gloves of dex(dx+5), writing set, halberd 80s x2!. I couldn’t find the CURSED dog, because there was a river in the middle of the level and I didn’t feel like taking a bath. I hear the dog was rabid anyways. I ascended back to the surface, read a random scroll and boom, I suddenly just knew everything about everything I had with me. Lucky me. Then I went to see the pickpocket trainer in the outlaw town and after that I just headed to CoC. The trip to dwarftown was a drag, boring as hell, but gladly the town was on lvl9. I realised there that I do need the teleport wand from the over-priced shop(Yay, im a mindcrafter), I decided to return to the shop after I deal with the dwarven GY. The old man in dwarftown told me that he was afraid of spiders so I had to go and kill a cave fisher for him. I tried looking for one in the Big Room, but when the place started filling with ogre maguses, I thought, what the hell, I do feel like grave digging anyways. So I escaped the freezing inferno and headed towards dwarven GY. On the way to the GY, I popped in for a chat at the Old barbarian’s glade. In the dwarven GY, I lost a few points of toughness, but survived otherwise. I just poured some water on the grave and let Nonnak taste my great balls of fire. I did lose a lot of hp by just doing this in coward mode and invisible, so watch out, my cursed brethren, that GY can be a tricky place when the planets don’t line well for you. One nice item I got from GY was iron-shod quarterstaff of devastation 5d10+11, too bad I had a weapon of devastation and a shield already. After GY I went to the YE OLDE GIFTSHOPPE and got the freaking wand of teleportation, and also by the ring shop to get another ring of luck. What can I say, I make my own fortune, no curses can prevent me! After the shopping spree, I decided to head back to CoC. I did meet awful lot of jackals on the way, but that turned out to be a good thing – got Courage from the barbarian. After that I went to Dwarf Town and started chilling out with the priest. EDIT2: While in Dwarftown, I used the wand of teleportation and got to the mystic. Reveived 7 potions of insight and 4 blessed scrolls of chaos resistance!. Immediately I drank one and indeed, I was CURSED. After that I went to the big room, now I had ring of frost resistance and elemental gauntlets so ogre maguses were a walk in the park. killed fisher, went on to the second quest. Nothing special appeared until I got to dwaven halls. And when I got there, there it was, a greater moloch, just waiting for me. It was blocking a hallway, so I decided to lure it out and go around it. Bollocks, I say! the room was too small and I got in melee range of the of the moloch, I had coward mode on, but no help, it one hitted me to death. It was too good to be true anyways. Screenshot looks messed up, isnt there enough room horizontally in this forum. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Screenshot ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ############# #...../.....# #.<...#####/##### #.....# #.....# ####### #.....# #.....# ## ###################..&..#####.# #...../.........../...@......... #.....#####################.#.# #.....# #.# #.....# ### #.....# ####### Illithid St:24 Le:13 Wi:14 Dx:13 To:23 Ch: 6 Ap: 7 Ma: 4 Pe: 9 N+ DV/PV: 67/18 H: -28(114) P: 44(44) Exp: 11/125595 DH: 1 Sp: 100 Coward ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Illithid Race: female Troll Class: Mindcrafter Eye color: black Hair color: black Complexion: tanned Height: 8'2" Weight: 425 pounds Age: 17 (grown-up) Star sign: Cup Birthday: 2/Cup (day 242 of the year) YOUR HISTORY: Your parents belong to the middle class. Starsign: Unicorn Status: Won game Level: 50 Great. Well, he got 3 talents, so I went for the 7lbs. Dire wolf pet. Bard-class skills: Cooking(almost total waste), Detect item status(good one), Fletchery(waste, find enough), Gardening(waste), Herbalism(good). Pet: dire wolf(okay, mabye?). 3 Talents, so I got the boots ([+4,0]). Short-lived race, Weak class, Bad skills for survival (decent utility). I'll post my obituary soon. Update I: Went to Terinyo, got the quests. I then went to Outlaw village for pickpocketing and possibly ID stuff in the shop. I was able to outrun anything. Went to SMC to generate monsters. On the way I met raider lord, but ran away without trying to kill him. Had to leave behind my pet dire wolf, mabye I'll meet him in the wilderness later. He found an altar on VD2, and was able to convert to Neutral and also become lucky. He desperately needs more PV, so I'll hang around VD:4 a bit, and let the healer heal me if needed. He has 45 hps, should be enough to survive traps. Update II: He has: Cleared village dungeon, rescued carpenter, received healing skill, advanced to dwarftown, gotten quests. He has fine eq, some spells and an orcish spear of mayhem, with a mithril tower shield on side. He bought detect traps and disarm traps skills, working on money for stealth skill. Swimming got from baby dragon. Update: 20 april: Looks like I lost what I wrote yesterday, so very quick: Dwarf quests all done, Dwarf graveyard done, Pyramid done, I plundered darkforge (not a SINGLE useful item for me, all weak weapons). I went to SMC and down UD to open up HMV (nothing good here). I decided my character was too weak to do much in the game. I did arena fights after winning, I had to flee from a diamond golem. Came back later and almost died again, but killed it. Then I did a long spree of stat-raising. Harvesting herbs, and I mined out one entire level in D:7. I did it for ore, sure, but mostly to find stone giants to kill and eat for +ST. I had 18, now I have 31 ST. (Insert "Gonna fly now" from "Rocky" for soundtrack here) And TO and WI and DEX are good too. I will do RotHK, then work towards doing the Rift, before doing fire tower (need more spells now that my LE is higher). I luckily got SoCR from dwarven mystic. I accidently walked into and hit a karmic lizard, and though "Oh hell, now I gotta lose this dooming before anything" but later realized that I had only lost my LUCK intrinsic. So I sacced some gold till I got it back. Whew. I also looted a fluff ball from gremlin cave, in case I want to gremlin-scum. But I'd rather not. I also paid a visit to water dragon, and found two items I wanted. So I darkened the room and took them. I never kill the nice old dragon, just teleported out and left. So now I have a black dragon scale mail and finally a useful weapon, eternium halberd, which will let me kill ACW. I also spent quite a while smithing some stuff, so now I have good mithril boots, mithril cap, adamantium girdle. Yes, the dwarven smith sadly died to a greater daemon. Turns out he had a poisonous eternium warhammer, don't know how he lost with that.... Update 22nd April: Darn computer crash when I was trying edit this last time. So this is after one nights sleep: I basically did TohTH, that was real easy. I then fell down into the rift. New message for me: I had a jackal pet at the time, and after I hit the bottom the jackal "was killed by the fall". Bard-charming-ability is just being used as a novelty by me, to cut down on the monsters I need to kill when facing summoners (werewolves, jackalweres and spider summoners). I used it with great effect in the early game, in fact it saved me from dying to pit vipers when I was level 4 or so. But I digress. Rift was tough, I had to play hide-and-seek with a mimic hivemind as I had no free action amulet. And a diamond golem nearly killed me. Still got away with lots of spells, including teleport and cure critical and damage spells. Also found two scrolls of cure corruption which were lost later in rift dungeon. I got the weird tome out, havent traded it in yet. I had too few good healing potions, so I had to visit the village healer. I made a pet, and had him get hurt defending me, and I healed him with cure criticals. Healer liked what he saw, and gave me a total of 10 blessed potions of ultra healing (I stopped there since too many make the game a joke. Besides my mana regen is painfully slow). I then did fire temple, got 3 levels. Wyrm dealt with with my trusty eternium halberd and one potion of confusion. Poor sod. Energy rays only did 80 damage too. I was a walking tank after my smithing spree, have 50/50 now on very aggressive setting, with fire orb's strength boots I now deal enough damage. I stopped at DH:1 for a little bit of gremlin scumming. I was hoping to find a wish, and I could have spent a RL week doing this, but I figured I was about ready to win. I just needed....WATER. Yeah, very low-water game so far. I found 3, so I judged I could move on. Khelly was chatted to, poor sod. Then graveyard, dug up a lot of graves, nothing too good (a bit of water, actually :). Found and killed a lich king, thank you arrows of undead slaying. Then some very boring levels, and now I'm standing in the casino, collecting all items and putting them in the corner. 3 corruptions so far, none bad so I'm keeping them. I got the 12 eyes, the rage (-DV+damage) and teleportitis (very nice, saves me mana when I need to teleport) Next up is cat lord, I'm not sure if I can outrun and shoot him with my new blessed 7lbs, or if I need to go coward and use wands. I only killed 2 cats so far (one in arena, one by accident) so he shouldn't be too bad. But still he will be the most dangerous moment for this char. Corruption is no issue, when I get to level 36 I'll get the rune-covered trident to deal with D:50 balors, and I have humanoid slaying ammo. Air temple will be a bit tougher, but I usually go very light in there anyway. Update 24th April: I just became doomed too. Imagine, you are a shopkeeper in the unreal dungeon, level 6 (which would actually make it deeper than D:50, hell on earth. And just imagine what kind of monsters you see every day down there...enough to chill the blood of any sane person. However, when finally an adventurer comes to buy some stuff, he decides I look unholy aura-ish and attacks ME. Well I never. In your next life, think twice before attacking an adventurer before the gates of hell...they tend to be kinda strong by that time. And those thugs, ooooh scary. I became doomed just before mana temple, and looks like I'm stuck at that for this game. I have looked for karmic corpses, to sell to a shop for storage or something, but not a single one has been generated. Still, got lucky intrinsic and also wearing some bracers of war that some nice giants decided to donate. I mentioned earlier that I found some 7lbs, right? Which was nice since I lost that starting pair...well, burnt away by an iron golem. So no boots for me. In other news: Casino was a bit of a disappiontment, best item probably potion of quickling blood. Cat lord quite easy, just used one ultra healing. Skipper air temple, did earth temple. Found two greater giant vaults and two regular white dragon ones. Good exp, loot included natures companion, protector shield [+20,+4], ring of immunity, bracers of war and wyrmlance. And rune covered sling. Also 3-4 potions of gain attribute, and a scroll of chaos resistance (just as well, as I lost 2 potions of cure corruption to dragons freezing breath. No, I did have a ring of fire equipped) Mana temple went pretty well apart from dooming, until I started taking damage and being confused. And I did not even see the archmage...then I remembered that he was invisible, put on a ring, moved one square away and shot him dead with 10 quarrels of humanoid butt-kicking. Went up, did air temple, went more up, then to village, got unicorn quest. I had turned CN from shopkeeper killing, so I had to get all my stuff cursed in order to get to NC. Which I had to do to get unicorn quest. But no worry. Then I somehow went CN again, and can't be bothered to turn again. Harvested some food which I needed, and going back down to finish this tomorrow. Stay tuned FINAL UPDATE: DID HIS QUEST FOR GLORY SUCCEED? FIND OUT HERE... Jason walked down the familiar hallways. He knew the lower dungeon of chaos like the back of his hand. Once he could not tell north from south, but now he strode along the corridors without conscious thought. The first time - he had been alone, afraid. Every corner had been a potential ambush site, and every dark room concealed a hidden terror. This time - he had a friend. The bard had long since abandoned all animal creatures as the weaklings they were. His ally was about him, cloaking him with an aura of hate, and chaos, and fire. There was a voice in his ear, whispering forbidden words of power, taunting his mercy and feeding his need for destruction. The lesser beings of chaos would not stand before him, but there were some who would not let this imposter pass unchallenged. They soon cursed his name as their life bled out on the cold stones. Jason had already killed the master thief and the assasin prince, in order to absorb their life-force, and attain thier dark skills. The assassin prince had held a dagger, which Jason judged weak and Needless. However, when he was but one level above the devious cavern with elemental anomalies, the Evil blade let forth a whisper, "...we will bring you power...join us...for your glory...". Being a Bard of lore, he knew the legend of the blades, so powerful that the Gods themselves separated them. No mortal should possess such power of carnage. None but Jason. So he headed for a side-track to his quest, and went to a somewhat unreal dungeon. He came past the smashed-up remains of a former wand-shop, the very place where his ally first had sounded his voice, and made Jason commit his first crime. The first of three crimes, the price to pay for restoration of order to the land of Drakalor. In the unreal dungeon there was a dark opening, leading to a cave. A cave lit up by sudden surges of electricity. The mindless dragon-creatures of the cave could try as they would, there was no stopping the warrior of hate, and his quest was soon fulfilled. The mighties of dragons lay dead, with a lance stuck wickedly into its flesh. After cutting off it's head and presenting it to a senile old Wyrm, Jason was rewarded with the brother of his evil blade. He grabbed both daggers, and felt power running through him. The shadow about him deepened. Jason was ready. Jason had little recollection of entering the lowest level. A slight dizziness - that went into a blur. His daggers led the way, possesing a will of their own, and led him towards his goal - the utter destruction of all sentient beings of chaos. And the beings of chaos fell before the fury of the adventurer possessed. None could withstand his lightling attacks, and those that tried to run, were pierced with mighty crossbow bolts, bolts that made the targets shrivel in an instant, and fall to the ground as a pile of ash, and charred flesh. Balors, feared since ancient legend first spoke of their being, were gathered in greater number than ever before. They teleported, surrounding the menacing adventurer. And they were thwarted. Jason blinked out of sight, reappeared and slew two of the balors with some lightning fast strokes, then teleported away, unleashing a barrage of silvery arrows at the survivors. They stood, and fought, and died. Before the gate of chaos, there stood a great host of evil beings. And they did not rush out, having their higher duty to the One. They knew that no matter what weapons he wielded, no enemy could pass through the narrow opening. But then, a blink, and Jason was among them. Mabye one or two of the mighty magicians there sensed the power and force of will behind their foe....and then there was only pain. Acid vapor filled the air, their eyes were blinded, their lungs were choked, and their skin peeled off, leaving only quivering, soon-still flesh. Finally the One rose from his throne. Fistandantilus, the mighty, guardian of the gate. His massive hand flicked, and his whip curled cruelly foreward. Jason met the stroke with his shield, but still the backlash cut across his torso, resulting in a bleeding would. The last battle had begun. Jason proved the mightier, and his inner force prevailed. After slaying his foe, Jason quickly pulled some levers, closing the gate, and making his mission a success. "No competition" the voice said and Jason knew it was right. He cut the face of the One, and wore it upon his own. Jason was not troubled by anyone on the way up, save one white unicorn. The unicorn was not hostile, but it reminded him of something, something lost in his dark thoughts of hate, and his nightmares. Mabye the greater unicorn... In a dazed state, Jason had made his way to the clearing where he earlier, in another life, had found peace and had lifted his deadly corruptions. Approaching the gentle white creature, it was almost as if the shadows around him lightened, his aura faded, and his heart was opening... The white unicorn saw only a being of chaos, and being a good, noble and lawful creature it immediately attacked. After the first failed lunge, it suddenly perceived a hidden malice in his enemy, a malice it now had awakened. The unicorn tried to use its powers to flee, but was left transfixed, unable to do anything but stare in horror as two piercing blades consumed its flesh. As darkness fell, the last words that fell upon its ears was "The second crime is complete" In Terinyo, everything was made ready for the feast. The Druid, Guth-alak, had perceived that the flow of chaos into the world had ceaced. The monsters in the surrounding areas had none of the evil drive that had led them to destroy, and kill like before. Now the village just waited for the return of the triumphant hero. And presently, he arrived. He looked about, seemingly unsure of where to go. Then he spied the tiny girl, crying about the unknown fate of her little dog. The adventurer went to the shop, and Munxip knew what he wanted. He had ready the corpse of the poor dog, kept in storage for this time. He said to the adventurer, "Break it to her gently". The adventurer took the corpse, nodded and smiled. Or rather, grinned. The adventurer walked over to the fountain where the little girl was standing. He took out the corpse, and hesitated, as if he wanted to say something. Then he brought the puppy corpse down on her head with stunning force, making her crumple soundlessly to the ground. Time stood still, as the villagers were trying to register what had happened. And then the fallen one pronounced, with a deep, booming voice :"And this was my third and last crime". Looking around he added, with a manical laugh: "After this nothing is called a crime". He then summoned a huge ball of fire, killing several farmers. As more worthy opponents closed in, the Druid and the shopkeeper and the sheriff amongst them, the former adventurer cast back his hood, put on his mask, and revealed his two very sharp daggers. The legend of the village of Terinyo has it, that after the Orc had slain the whole village save one goodwife, he named her his "witness" and said unto her :"A new power is rising, and all shall bow before me. You wretch shall be spared, for you shall let all those who would follow the path of Order know what happens to those who stand against the cursed one" And then began the evil empire of the orc, which ravaged the land for many decades since. Morale of the story: Once an orc, always an orc. Especially when he is cursed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Screenshot ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^ ^^*^^^^ ^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^..^ ^===""""~ &&&&&&&~~~~~~~~~~~~^*^^ ===^^*^^^^^^^^^^^^.@^^ =="""~~~~ &&&&o&&&&&&&~~~~~~~&&&== ===="""""""&&^~^^*^.^^ """"~~~^^^ ^^^^&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&==""""""""""&&~~~^....^ ""~~^^*^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^&&&&&&&&&""""=""""""""""&&&&&o..~^^^ "~~~^^^^^^^*^~~~~~~^o^^^*^"""""""""""""""""""=="""""""""&&&&&&&&&&^^^ ~~^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^""""""""""""""""""""=""""""""&&&&&&&&&&&~~^^^ ^^^~~~^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^"""""&&&&"""*&&&&""""=="""""&&&&&&&&&&&&~~*^^^ ^^~~~~~~"o""""^^"""""""""&&&&&&&&&......^^^^=="""""""&&o&&&&~~~~^^^^ ^^~~~~"""""""""""""""""&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&.^^*^^===""""""&&&&&&~~~^^^^ ^~~~~~"""""""""""""""&&&&&&&*&*&&&&&&&&&....^^^^==="""&&""&&&~~~~~^ ^^&"""" """""""""""&&&&&&&&&&&&&*&&&&&&&&&.""""""===="""""~~~~~^^ ^^^ ^^^&&""""""""""""""""&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&""""""==""====""~~~*^^^ ^*^ ^^*^&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&^^^*^^^^&&&&&&&&&&&&&&"""""===""""""""~~~~^^^^ ^~^ ^^^^^^&&&&&&&&&&&&&^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^&&&&&&&&&&""""""=^^"""~^^^^^^ ^o^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^+^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Jason St:82 Le:36 Wi:45 Dx:50 To:43 Ch:25 Ap:24 Ma:27 Pe:30 C- DV/PV: 70/53 H: 879(879) P: 184(573) Exp: 50/25873894 DrCh Sp: 153 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Jason Race: male Orc Class: Bard Eye color: brown Hair color: brown Complexion: black Height: 5'11" Weight: 163 pounds Age: 18 (grown-up) Star sign: Unicorn Birthday: 24/Unicorn (day 114 of the year) YOUR HISTORY: Your parents were poor people. Here's mine, a high elven paladin named Tamasel, who was dumb enough to trip over the idol of his god just before leaving, and was thus struck with the horrible curse of the Friday the 13th. He was born in Candle and does have my favorite piece of armor ever - the almighty elven chain mail - so I am fairly optimistic. Six starting PV coupled with the Candle regeneration should make survival easier. What really sucks is that I will get in trouble with piety. Since I mustn't lose the curse, I can't heavily invest in piety, and if I forget to sacrifice stuff over a long time, I risk losing my special abilities. Of course, I've hardly played paladins, so I don't know if this is all that bad. EDIT: Did I mention that he has a Toughness of 8? NEXT EDIT: This does not bode well. Tamasel just had to break off his rescue mission for the tiny puppy dog because his long sword was rusted by a water trap, leaving him only with a crude knife against masses of ant warriors. Next heading for the wilderness, probably to die. YET ANOTHER EDIT: I have only narrowly escaped death at the hands of a bandit party to cross the three spaces to the Druid Dungeon (Paladins are one of the few classes that have Healing, but not Herbalism). I encountered a closed door. One kick revealed that it was a trapped door. Being suicidal, I kicked it. Fireball trap. Even before I gained damage, I was given the message that I killed a cat. Whee. In addition, my already rusted long sword was now a heap of melted metal, leaving me now with really nothing but my crude knife. (And a couple of daggers.) Miraculously, I survived the trap in relatively good shape, but was confronted with a mixed tension room, which I most certainly could not deal with at the current time. Time for plan B! (Which is always running away...) While I did run like hell, I was trapped in a hallway between a ghost bat and a blink dog. Seeing as my last competition entry (gnomish merchant competition on Christmas) was killed by hordes of summoned blink dogs, I berserked that guy (Why the fudge was he even hostile? I was lawful!) and managed to kill him. Now I am in the deeper Druid Dungeon, stuck there until I'm powerful enough to beat a doppleganger. Things are really looking up though: I've finally found a rusty small shield to go with my crude knife. I will go down in history as The Paladin with The Shitty Equipment. Also, I can safely assume that I would've died three to four times now if it were not for the Candle starsign, which is the most kickass starsign of all. Raven doesn't help much if there is no space to run away to ;) SADLY, THE LAST EDIT: Tamasel died of acute blood poisoning on DD:4. First, he encountered a floating eye. Trying to fight it, getting paralyzed in the process, a dark elven warrior snuck up on the gallant high elf and poisoned him HEAVILY. Even though the dark elven heathen was slain, the gods couldn't (or wouldn't) help their paladin. I think this qualifies as a very unlucky death, right? You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? (123456789) 4 Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! Character: Elysi, female drakeling necromancer born in wand Status: dead First kill: kobold K, that was lame... Got ambushed in wilderness by a pack of wolves. Tried to pray for health. Prayer was unanswered and my char died. Died in wilderness, didn't get to start VD. Snwo aval ten [Edited 1 time, last edit on 4/13/2007 at 20:12 (GMT -5) by netlava] |

Hi there! I just registered on the forums to take part in all the fun and excitement of the challenge ... which lasted not quite as long as i had hoped for. In character generation the RNG was still my friend: I got a male dwarven monk named Geffrey with decent stats (St:21, To:20) born in the month of Raven (yay for the speed, throwing tridents could've been fun, too). Entering Terinyo he had a chat with the local druid and a little girl in a red dress. He decided to first help that little girl and sought out the place she described. Not long after entering the cave, Geffrey met his first worthy opponent, a creature of pure evilness. He decided to take it on, and after a few hits the goblin was ready to meet his ancestors. Being confident after this victory, Geffrey rushed into the second room, which seemed to be empty at first glance, but then he stumbled into what seemed to be a terrarium of sorts buried into the ground. Not only did the fall hurt, but there were also several vipers crawling out of it now. Trying to get the hell out of that place Geffrey trampled two vipers on the way back that were slightly faster than him, but got bitten twice in the process. So he locked himself up in the entrance to the cave and cared for his wounds. When noticing he was about to die soon, he wondered if maybe his god could help him out of this situation, so he prayed for help. But apparently his god had other things in mind (like ChAoS flooding Ancardia and such). In case he just got the wrong number (of sorts) he tried again, but there was just a rumbling sound (was that his stomach, or did the cave begin to collapse?). Just in case he decided to get out. The first warm rays of the sun shining on his head were the last thing Geffrey felt, then blackness fell upon him. Geffrey, the dwarven monk, died of acute blood poisoning. He scored 411 points. He survived for 0 years, 0 days, 14 hours, 6 minutes and 46 seconds (173 turns). EDIT: beat this! Geffrey visited 3 places. His perception score was modified by +1 during his career. He ended his adventuring life in the wilderness. 3 monsters perished under his attacks. EDIT: ...and this ;) He possessed the following intrinsic: He was cursed. He had the following talent: Alert. He had a final speed score of 110 (final base speed: 110). He was not particularly religious. He asked for 2 divine interventions. He was lawfully aligned. The following monsters were vanquished: 1 goblin 2 pit vipers Haven't lost a character that early on for a long time, but then I don't tend to start many at Friday 13th either :P More luck to the rest of you :D [Edited 1 time, last edit on 4/12/2007 at 23:12 (GMT -5) by Zatsakulut] |

Character: Gruntess Birthsign: Falcon Race: Orc Class: Merchant peaces of autobiography: i was very ill in youth and after that left be weakened mentally and physically i pondered for years which decision to pick. Status: dead Place: PC1 (and i told this a safe place) Direct reason of death: goblin Undirect: mindless rage Toughness was 13 and that was highest stat only Strength and charisma hitting double digits. Talents: Alert, Long lived, Long stride. pretty obvious reasons for them. Started dual wielding but without two weapon combat skill. so i take stupid dager away, leaving broadsword. nice stuff was studded leather armour and heap of rings i speliazed in. mainly elemental resists and wedding, iirc. well, i picked quests and went to PC1 to avoid encounters. Tossed coins at orc, when at kobold. grand total of two great monsters Gruntess has slain... i went down into pc2 just to check area to see extra escape if needed. and managed to come back. oh and i get my only loot there scroll of identify. next room had wild cat squeezing past someone. With Perception at 6 i felt lucky to see cat at all. so knowing unstable manners and multiple attacks per round i close door and go backwards. goblin pops around a corner. I check him not rockthower, simple simple goblin. I got to berserk toss a coin miss, goblin gets next to me. i decide to whack him with broadsword from aggresive. i miss, goblin gets crittical bringing me down from 13 to 1 hp. i go to coward and step back to create space. pray, your prayer remains unheard. Shit, must be effect of cursing. step back untill door but goblin doesn't leave space. Since my DV hardly reaches 20 on coward i decided to berserk into him. Ofcourse i miss and he lands another critical puting me into -12. by the way i managed to generate artifact. black thome. must be (book)shop on PC2. i won't post character log becouse in frustration i didn't generated one. somehow suspect you will trust me on world. was goblin so lucky becouse of darknight. damn, but i was chaotic too... I decided to take part in this challenge, and a character I've got will be...well, a challenge! Hurthling farmer born in the month of the Wand. He got 3 talents so I took Alert, Hardy and Healthy. Still, his 18 hp won't save him cause his lousy weapon (sickle, 1d4+2) doesn't guarantee first-strike kills. But maybe his large dog will be of assistance...Who can tell? Waldo, the farmer decided to find and save the mad carpenter...Will he do it? Or will he soon meet his end? To be continued... Waldo and his brave dog first went to PC:1, finding an chaotic altar there. He managed to get to lvl 3, and then the couple went to VD. No ambushes in the wilderness, Waldo and the dog descended, and on the 2nd lvl Waldo was already lvl 5. Unfortunately, one strike from a giant rat and Waldo became sick. He knew the village healer can save him, but a claw bug was in the way. The brave dog fought it, but his wounds were too deep and he panicked, and soon after collapsed. Horrified with this scene, Waldo continued his trip to the village elder. However, immediately upon descending the stairs, a goblin skeleton came and Waldo had no choice but to fight. Weakened by the sickness, he failed to defeat the skeleton and became yet another dead hero in the Drakalor Chain... Waldo, the hurthling farmer, was killed by a goblin skeleton. He scored 2127 points and advanced to level 5. He survived for 0 years, 1 day, 11 hours, 30 minutes and 4 seconds (1444 turns). 1 companion was killed during his adventures. Waldo visited 7 places. His perception score was modified by +1 during his career. He ended his adventuring life in the small village dungeon on dungeon level 4. 12 monsters perished under his attacks. He possessed the following intrinsics: He was lucky (gained through an item). The cursed ring hurthlings start with was actually a cursed ring of luck. Isn't it ironic?:) He was cursed. He had the following talents: Alert, Careful, Hardy, Healthy. He had a final speed score of 101 (final base speed: 101). He was religious. He did not ask for divine help. He was lawfully aligned. The following monsters were vanquished: 1 bugbear 1 giant rat 2 goblins 1 goblin rockthrower 3 large bats 1 orc 1 rat 2 skeletons [Edited 1 time, last edit on 4/13/2007 at 02:55 (GMT -5) by Frim] |

Gender: Female Race: Gray Elf Class: Healer Month: Salamander. Talents: Alert; Long Stride Name: Em0k1d (heh imagine a Gray elven female teenager... an Emo teenager, lol, I wonder what methods of suicide she prefers) Started well, with 18 Le and 24 Ma :) Unfortunately, I started with clothes instead of an elven chain mail. I went to the SMC first, where a jackal almost killed me. I had to drink one of my two potions of healing and use a bandage. I killed a rat, and decided to get the hell out of there, the place was way too dangerous. On my way out, I got ambushed by raiders.... somehow I managed to escape from them too. So I went to PC1, where I find battle axe of the void (+3, 1d6+2), which is excellent, my scalpel wouldn't do against ants. On PC1 ants were generated and I had to flee... on PC2 I got surrounded by ants and had to use all my potions of extra healing to kill two ant workers... Next I went to the ID to train a little and find some usefull stuff. Reached level 6, and I could now recover twice the normal rate... sweet! I saw death with my own eyes when I opened a door and entered the room... I got the dreaded "All sounds are muffled" message. I took one step forward by mistake, and I see this arrow coming towards me. I was sweating, hoping that my Dodge skill would save my ass... I managed to dodge, got out of the room, closed the door and waited for the raider to come out and play, hehe. I killed him and got the hell out of there. I found a leather armor of power [+0, +2], which I decided to keep but not use, not until I found a spellbook... After my studded leather armor was destroyed, I managed to find a spellbook of Knock... I was unhappy that it wasn't an offensive spell, but it was better than nothing... On the same level I advanced to lv 9... I'm planning to spend a little more time in the ID to find another spellbook, then go to the outlaw village to learn Pick Pockets. We'll see, I'm at school now. EDIT: Oh well, I just had to play in school, didn't I? I died :( Name: Em0k1d Race: female Gray Elf Class: Healer Eye color: golden Hair color: white Complexion: pale Height: 6' Weight: 119 pounds Age: 310 (grown-up) Star sign: Salamander Birthday: 19/Salamander (day 139 of the year) YOUR HISTORY: Your parents belong to the middle class. You were a very curious and adventurous child. As a kid you often watched the adult adventurers preparing for new exciting journeys. They sparked your imagination. I decided to drop all my inventory and trigger the acid trap, hoping that it would destroy my cursed equipment. Well I was triggering the trap, recovering hp, triggering the trap, recovering, until a yellow s sneaked on me and poisoned me. I killed it for it's insolence, of course, but alas, the poison killed me. When the assassin snake poisoned me, I was down at 5 hp :( I just had to play with traps, didn't I? For the Horde! Name - Woody Class - Druid Race High Elf Star Sign - Cup Status - Alive Level - 23 Location - TOEF Still alive, but now have no offensive spells. Find spellbooks round every corner, but nothing offensive. 600 castings of Divine Wrath has got me to Dwarftown, but now its down to my trusty spear. My only real hope is my ring of invisibility. I'm going to head back to ID, and wander around there again until I get some useful spells. **************** Hellish Flames is now my backup, not enough castings gained to really use it as anything else. Need to kill a raider to satisfy Thrundaar, wasting a lot of time trying to find one. Now evil, so will start to gain piety on the altars. ************* Druid equivalent of Nether Bolt is in my armory now. Have found a decent herb garden, so life is getting better. Heading back to COC, where I'm going to assault the big room until a Raider comes my way. Progress is very slow with this curse, but its starting to look better than it did. *********** Killed a Raider, Tree level was easy to pass. Currently slaughtering Ogres. ********* I've decided to avoid the last dwarf quest until I'm a little more confident. Currently need teleport control to really get going. ************** Teleport Control will make life easier now. First Orb gained. I'm also doomed. About to fetch the Banshee to assist in some tree felling. Hopefully this will get me a ring of Ice, and a few other goodies. ************** After a huge massacare of trees, I generated nothing of value at all. One RODJS. Used that to generate two scrolls of chaos resistance. Now that might sound dumb, but with Poison hands as corruption one, thick gauntlets burnt away, and no new ones generated in 2 hours of game time, I had to do something. The banshee was starting to do over 120 damage in a round, and hitting me didnt seem to be a problem. Only plus side is Acid Bolt, Baptism of fire, and a few other good bolt spells. High learning is now starting to help out a lot. Time to dive and hope. Might hit the guardian to get my levels up a bit, then Minotaur Maze, TOEF, RIFT etc. ********************* Finally starting to get some momentum, at the top of the tower, and about to start the assault. Main problem is that I'm getting rather corrupted. Also after playing after a few beers, I woke up the next morning to discover that the sword of Nonak had disappeared. Got to stop leaving things in the pub after a few beers !!!!. [Edited 1 time, last edit on 5/3/2007 at 09:02 (GMT -5) by Jules] |

Thirteenth - a teaching story for young Trolls – told by a learned Troll tribal elder. “Hear now the cautionary tale of Thirteenth the Troll Merchant. She was a bad student, and ill prepared for her journey, but puffed up with Pride and Confidence. She didn’t follow the ways of the gods, and believed her name to cancel all superstitions. In her pride, she looked for glory and wealth on an unlucky day – she entered the Domain over the mountains, bought provisions and chatted politely with the townfolk, properly showing her proud, tolerant, glorious Troll heritage.” “She didn’t eat anybody in da village?” squeaked a young Troll. “No! You should never eat anybody where others can see you! It gives all Troll-kind a bad reputation,” replied the elder. “Did she drag anyone out of da village for later, or beat anyone an’ take dere gold?” rumbled a young boy Troll. “No! Stop interrupting me,” said the elder. “She left that peaceful village for a grubby little town where she could get down to robbing and pillaging – proper Troll work, but after only three steps outside the peaceful town, the prejudice and hatred that many races have for our kind showed. She was ambushed by roving Raiders – likely tipped off by the petty humans in the town who have long hated us. She took two arrows in the neck, two in the chest, and five in the back. She died alone in the forest.” “Study hard, respect the gods, and you might survive,” said the elder. "Now go to bed before I eat you." (I've never died so fast - ever) Try the TiLiCat! It's experience! Tiger, stuffed with deboned Lion, stuffed with deboned Wildcat, and slow roasted with a mix of herbs. Born under the Wand sign,a Trollish Bard with 3 starting talents, named Heirtroll (no, I'm not good with names. All my recent chars are named Miser or TH ;) ). Starting stats - St: 15, Le:3, Wi: 5, Dx: 10, To: 19, Ch:14, Ap:10, Ma: 13, Pe:10. The stats are really bad, but I got some luck on the skills, got Alertness, Concentration, Dodge, Detect traps, Stealth, Ventriloquism. But the dumb troll is illiterate :| EDIT. THAT'S IT! How long did it take for me to kill the cursed troll? 11 minutes!. Checked up the SMC, got the blanket, found the down staircase in the next room, so I decided to get Healing first, before diving for the HMV. Along the way, I tamed some animals (each one got a "creative" name like Pinky the Rat or Bruce the Bat) , drank an orange potion in a carrot-smelling room. Nothing much, I was at full hp when: Here's an edited .flg: ######### #.......# #.......################################################# #.......................................................# #################################################.......# ############# #.......# #...........# ######################### #.......#######...........# #...../.................# #......./...../...........# ###########.....#################.# #.......#######...........# #...../.../.....# #.# #.......# #...........# #...<.#####.#+### #.# #/####### #####/####### #.....# #.#.# #.# #.# #.# ####### #.#.###################.###############.#################.# #.#...............................................+.....#.# ###########.#.###################.###############.###########.....#.# #...................................@.................# #.....#.# #.......###.#.###################.###############.###.# #######.# #.......# #.#.# #.# #(# #.# #.# #.......# #.#.# #.# #.# #.##### #/##### #.......# #.#.# #.# #.# #.....# #.....# ######### #.#.# #.# ###########.###.....#########.>...# #.#.# #.# #...*...+...../.....#.......+.....# ###/#+################# #.# #.......###.#########.############# #......./.............# #.# #.......# #.# #.# #.......#######.......# #.# #.......###.#########.######### #.......# #.......# #.# #......./.....................# ######### #.####### #.# #.......###.#########.#######.# #.# #.# #.......# #.# #.# #.# #############.# #.# #####+### #.# #.# #.# #........./...# #.# #.# #.# #.# #.# #.........#############.#########.#####.#########+# #.# #........./...*...................................# #.# #######################.#########.#####.###.......# ###+##### #.# #.# #.# #.......# #.......# #.# #.# #.# ######### #.......# #.# #.# #.# #.......# ######### #.# #.# #.###############.......# #.......# #.# #.# #...............+.......# #.......#####################.# #.# ######################### #......./.........+...........# #.# ###################...........#########.# #.........../.........# ####################### Heirtroll St:16 Le: 3 Wi: 5 Dx:10 To:19 Ch:14 Ap:10 Ma:13 Pe:15 C DV/PV: 17/2 H: -2(34) P: 13(13) Exp: 3/1288 VD: 3 Sp: 100 Skills: Alertness ................ 35 (fair) [+3d3] Athletics ................ 48 (fair)[+4d4] Backstabbing ............. 24 (mediocre)[+4d4] Bridge building .......... 17 (mediocre)[+4d5](mr) Climbing ................. 49 (fair)[+4d4] Concentration ............ 23 (mediocre)[+4d5] Detect traps ............. 17 (mediocre)[+4d5] Dodge .................... 31 (fair)[+3d5] First aid ................ 22 (mediocre)[+4d5] Fletchery ................ 31 (fair)[+3d4] (mr) Food preservation ........ 38 (fair)[+4d5] Gemology ................. 10 (poor)[+4d5] Haggling ................. 36 (fair)[+4d5] Listening ................ 34 (fair)[+4d5] Mining ................... 10 (poor)[+4d4] Music .................... 84 (great)[+3d3] Pick pockets ............. 24 (mediocre)[+4d5] Stealth .................. 22 (mediocre)[+3d5] Swimming ................. 18 (mediocre)[+4d4] Ventriloquism ............ 33 (fair)[+4d5] Woodcraft ................ 28 (mediocre)[+4d4] Heirtroll, the trollish bard, got her head smashed by a stone block. This seemed like it might be fun, so I decided to give it a try... Name: Doomed Race: Drakeling Class: Bard Sign: Book Not my favorite race... or class... or sign... Oh well, I figured I'd give it my best. I headed to Terinyo to pick up some quests. Visited Munxip to grab some extra food. All prepared for adventure I head out of the town ready to take on the challenges awaiting me! Two steps out of the town I get jumped by hobgoblins. My pet lizard is MIA, so I kill one hobgoblin that's too close and start to run. The lizard finally shows up just as I'm getting surrounded. However, it ignores my order to attack, and decides to sun itself on a rock. So I'm left dealing with the hobgoblins myself. Not able to outrun them, I face them... and get hit and stunned by one chief, and immediately finished off by a second one. Out of the .flg file, here are the sad details: Doomed, the drakish bard, was killed by a hobgoblin chief. He scored 1153 points. He survived for 0 years, 0 days, 18 hours, 24 minutes and 34 seconds (138 turns). Doomed visited 2 places. His perception score was modified by +1 during his career. He ended his adventuring life somewhere on the plains. 1 monster perished under his attacks. He possessed the following intrinsic: He was cursed. He had the following talents: Alert, Pious. He had a final speed score of 100 (final base speed: 100). He was not particularly religious. He did not ask for divine help. He was neutrally aligned. The following monster was vanquished: 1 hobgoblin I'm not sure whether to blame the cursed status, just a bad situation, or my own inexperience with bards... I think I'll just blame the curse. |

I've rolled a random character, but I already have another game in progress, and I won't have time to play either game for quite some time. If I get around to playing, I'll keep you guys posted. Character: Grumpy, the female dwarven bard (born in sword). Not quite what I was hoping for. And I only got 2 talents. Oh well. Update, April 16: Alright, I decided to postpone important university work and start playing this character. I started with average stats and a decent skill set, including detect item status, alchemy and food preservation. Unfortunately, I had neither healing or herbalism. I realized that if I wanted to keep this character alive, I had to play as conservatively as possible. So with great chagrin, I took the village elder's quest and passed up the chance for herbalism. I started heading to the SMC, when I was ambushed by a jackal pack. I just barely escaped thanks to low-health-and-coward speed. My cave bear companion was unfortunately separated from me in the pack, so I was already all alone and injured in the wild - not a great start. I generated the SMC and quickly left again, evaded my next wilderness encounters, and then began searching for fights small enough for my bard to handle. This little dwarf, absolutely desperate to survive, faced certain death countless times. However, I knew that I couldn't simply reroll and try again upon death, so thanks to sheer determination I successfully got healing and cleared the village dungeon on this sad, frail bard. I didn't fight alone, of course; I constantly enlisted the help of various fauna. No animal could stand up to the enemy onslaught for long, however. All species of mammal and insect quickly died at my side - each living just long enough to let me make a tactical retreat. At one point I attempted to pray for healing, and my god adamantly refused. Evidently, cursing is enough to prevent help with starting piety. Ironically, the first armor I found was a leather armor of rage: something which would have been very useful on my true-berserking characters. Also, the VD contained four altars, which shows that the RNG knew I couldn't get precrowned and wanted to taunt me. When I finally found some proper equipment on VD:7, I was able to upgrade my PV from 3 to 9, and my need for companions was essentially eliminated. I also cleared the SMC during this period, at level 5. A reader may think this is a foolhardy tactic, and I'm as aware as anybody of the dangers that the SMC holds. But, if I didn't explore the SMC quickly, I would have to find the stairs at level 13 later. Luckily, I reunited with my cave bear companion before entering the cave, and he was able to escort me through the entire dungeon before we finally found the downstairs in the last unexplored room. With my support rock-throwing, and my bear's ability as a meat shield, we both managed to barely hang onto our lives long enough to exit the cave again. My bear didn't enjoy his victory for long, however, as a large snake's poison did him in before he could reach medical care. I was now able to clear the PC, mostly by myself. It wasn't easy, but it was possible. PC:5 seemed to generate monsters as fast as I could kill them, but eventually the RNG eased up and I was able to work my way through. I also killed Hotzenplotz with a blessed wand of lightning, and then plunged into the UD. I was able to cross the SMC at level 13 thanks to the wand of lightning, a potion of invisibility, and my personal Canadian grit. I continued to slowly upgrade my equipment, skills, and my chances for survival. That all faced a hitch when I opened an unavoidable door in the UD. With my back to the wall, I found myself staring into an entire room full of eyes of destruction. After discovering that the eyes could shrug of anything I could zap at them, I searched my inventory for the slightest help, and I found that darkness made stabbing eyes much safer. Still, before I found the best system, I lost four precious pieces of equipment. In retrospect, I could have taken more items off to protect them, but the important thing is that I survived. When I was finished, there were 40 eyes of destruction on my kill list. The rest of the UD was straight forward, and the high CoC was similarly routine. The dwarf told me to kill a claw bug, which took a surprisingly long time to find. I've managed by now to get the four basic corpse intrinsics: poison, fire and acid resistance and teleport control. I got the SoCR from the HMV, and talked to the dwarven mystic while neutral, and he gave me a PoGA and two potions of training as far as I can tell. The big room probably has enough herbs to be worth harvesting - all I need now is herbalism (and concentration, and find weakness... I could use some wishes). I currently stand in the pyramid's entrance, ready to bring Rehetep's dynasty to a close. UPDATE April 17: Rehetep was simple enough to kill; one crystal of fire did most of the work. I finished the dwarf's quests successfully. The greater demon drained my toughness by a few points, and I never even use Big Punch, so in retrospect I could have skipped that last quest entirely. Fortunately, I was able to repair that damage with wight corpses in the graveyard. I finished exploring down to Khelevastar, then grabbed a fluff ball and the phial and did my trademark gremlin scumming. I've built up a good pile of PoGAs, but I still don't have any SLB's, wishes or an AoLS. Luckily, I found a mithril spear of penetration, but very few special items turned up. I stole a few items from the water dragon, but she didn't have anything great. Darkforge also didn't have anything worth using, but at least I left with Kherab's anvil. I got as many skills as possible to 100 and drank my potions of education, and luckily got herbalism! Now I just have two more skills (concentration, find weakness) and two more items (AoLS, SLBs) to wish for... UPDATE April 20: I pacified the big room, and enjoyed my newly acquired herbalism. I also smithed up the best items I currently owned (helm of teleportation, black dragon scale mail, bracers of resistance, and a mithril girdle). However, even once my stats were impressively increased with herbs and PoGA, and my equipment was assembled, there was nothing I could do next. I couldn't do the ToEF with only 1 fireproof blanket and no rings of ice (it's much too risky) and I had no way of saving Khelavastar. After clearing out the TotHK, I found myself forced to continue gremlin scumming. I finally got a RoDS at around 3250 gremlins (spent on AoLS for Khelly) and I finally got a second fireproof blanket after 4000! Yes, that's much longer than I wanted to spend there, but I had no better way of getting the necessary items. With the AoLS in hand, I saved Khelly and explored down to the wall of fire. When I came back up to dwarftown, I took a moment to clean my inventory, and admire my growing spell list (even though I still don't have concentration). Waldenbrook had restocked his shop, and one of the five new items was SEVEN LEAGUE BOOTS! My first pair of the game. However, when I intended to open my inventory again, I accidentally cast lightning ball! (My spell list was open... that's what I get for late-night Adoming). Thanks to my massive willpower, many poor dwarven saps were killed. I found myself forced to kill every living thing in Dwarftown, which ironically qualifies me for a bonus according to Soirana's rules. I drank a potion of insight, and alas, I was doomed. I decided to try to hunt karmic lizards to cure myself, and I didn't want to un-pacify the big room, so I headed over to PC:5. Fortunately, that didn't burn up much game time thanks to my newfound movement speed. After killing a few monsters there, I called it a night. Now, after some reflection, I've decided to actually maintain, and imbrace, my dooming. I haven't done the ToEF yet, afterall, so this qualifies me for another challenge game bonus. I expect that this will make all my equipment as fragile as paper, so I'll have to do frequent smithing. Also, both my fireproof blankets might burn up pretty quick, so I'll have to fireproof my entire inventory for the ToEF. I could smith up a moloch armour, perhaps. (The very first moloch I found dropped one!) UPDATE April 20 (again) Oh jeez. I just ate a fortune cookie, and it told me: "If you are doomed, this will be the last fortune you ever read." UPDATE April 21: Well, so far, the fortune cookie has been wrong, though the next cookie told me "Your termination is long due." Things are going surprisingly well, despite my dooming. I haven't noticed any increase in the difficulty of fights or the number of monsters. The most significant effect for me is how fragile all my equipment is. I'm combatting this equipment destruction on three fronts: 1) Wear artifact body armour. Anything else will be quickly shredded. Other pieces of armour don't get damanged nearly as often. 2) Be EXTREMELY careful to avoid extra risks - getting surrounded, getting hit by any elemental attacks. 3) Get VERY high DV through smithing and safe strategies, so that your armour isn't hit in the first place. Also, I've been force to make some minor strategy changes: 1) No fighting in darkness! Thus, hard monsters like doppleganger kings have to be killed with magic or avoided entirely. 2) Keys crumble after ONE use, and door traps ALWAYS get set off when you only TRY to open the door. No kicking is necessary for this to happen. Thus, I have to detect traps on every closed door, and dig around the trapped ones. I learned this after several doors managed to destroy some of my best equipment with near surgical precision. One explosion rune blew apart my best bow of hunting, a spare pair of SLB's, gauntlets of strength +6, and a smithed up pair of bracers of resistance - and nothing else. The first place I went after my damnation was the ToEF. I took only the bare minimum equipment - worn and carried - because I was almost sure my fireproof blankets would be burned away. Surprisingly, they weren't, and I successfully got the orb. A few castings of ice ball killed most denizens of fire, and a potion of confusion incapacitated the wyrm. After this, I plunged down through the CoC. The casino had ironfirst, which I bought, but I plan to keep using the gauntlets I've smithed already. I went past the air and earth temples, planning to clear them on the way up, and on descending to D:45 I saw a message that I haven't seen in a very, VERY long time: "You feel truly excited." Several wand charges told me that an artifact weapon and the leather armor were being guarded by... lich kings. Many of them. Fortunately, there was only one emperor in this lot. I bravely ventured into the fray, confident with my magical skills and dwarven life-span. I had reached level 25 in the ToEF, and learned concentration(!), so I felt I stood a good chance. I used melee to clean a small room of master liches, and many ghosts and vampires, and hacked my way to the wall which separated me from the largest concentration of lich kings. I supplemented my massive willpower (from potions, herbs and lots of PoGA) with equipment and boost potions, and it reached over 80. I then released my massive lightning balls of fury, until my kill list included 17 lich kings. All that remained were two lich kings and one emperor, too far apart to be feasibly killed with my limited castings of ball spells, so I ventured into the room itself. The remaining liches kept me hacking through their summons for a very long time. A very, very long time. I suffered many corruptions, most of which I did not want to keep. Some equipment got damaged and destroyed, but not too much. I was also very lucky, though, because a great karmic wyrm gave me Preserver! That hadn't shown up when I detected items. Slowly the liches approached the door, and I shoved undead slaying ammo down their gullets. When one king was dead, the emporor approached near... and a death ray sliced through my body. I had forgotten about death rays... Yet, somehow I was alive! A quick reference to the guidebook told me that my ancient mummy wrapping had just saved my life. The emperor died for his insult, and the remaining lich king was destroyed. I was rewarded with Nature's Companion and Executor. Though another, smaller room of lich kings remained, I was mentally and physically exhausted (in game and in real life) and I retreated to dwarf town to repair my armour. I then entered the rift, carefully bringing only bare minimum equipment for the climb, and surprisingly, almost nothing was damaged. Somehow, an uncursed fireproof blanket was 'crushed'. The library didn't hold any nasty surprises, and I left with the weird tome and many useful spells. The bug cave was easy to clear with my magical prowess. I then ventured back into the CoC and tackled the temples. Before entering the air temple, I was careful to bring only the equipment that I thought was lightning-proof. I found, to my dismay, that dooming makes the air temple EXTREMELY destructive. My pickaxe, my blessed fireproof blankets, even my FOOD was instantly shredded by the electricity. I was forced to retreat to leave even more items behind. This left me with no fireproof blankets whatsoever, but luckily a summoned dragon dropped another - nice things like that tend to happen to me. I had to kick the blanket out of the temple, because I knew it would be destroyed the moment I picked it up. Despite these issues, I triumphantly left with the air orb and the summoner's corpse. The earth temple was much easier. With my high speed and a penetrating spear, everything was quickly dispatched. Unfortunately, the beast's remains rotted away too quickly. Now, I am back at the greater undead vault, ready to dispatch the rest of their ruling class. UPDATE April 23: How big can these posts get? Well, I'll just keep adding to it until I hit a limit. The greater vault was relatively simple to finish emptying. Thanks to the library, I had a solid amount of learning in all four ball spells. I pushed my naturally impressive willpower over 64 with equipment, and emptied the last room of lich kings - without ever seeing a single one of them. I almost feel sorry for the liches; with a wall between us, they couldn't even have known what was killing them. When I cleaned up the final summoned undead elsewhere in the level, I found a RoDS! Finally, I could wish for find weakness. My skill list was now complete. While pushing deeper into the CoC, I became even more convinced of something I had already suspected: damnation increases corruption. Perhaps this can be explained by my neutral alignment and low piety, when I'm used to being a champion of law. Still, my corruptions seemed to be absurdly rapid, even before 90 days. This made it obvious to me that I couldn't take the black unicorn's PoGAs, but I would need corruption cleansing instead. This was disappointing, but I had already been finding unusually many PoGAs, especially in the early game, so I was able to live with it. Also, I made each turn count for as much as possible. I often teleported to avoid walking twenty steps. When it was time for the blue dragon caves, I read scrolls of magic mapping on each level, and teleported to the fifth level as soon as possible. This was to avoid corruption and whatever monsters a doomed RNG might throw at me. I learned from my air temple fiasco, and left behind absolutely everthing that might be flammable. Doomed monsters are more experienced than your average generated monsters (I think), but by not killing any extra blues, I cancelled this out. The bottom level of the cave was easy to clear, with my awesome armour and a penetrating spear. I slowed myself before killing the great and ancient blue wyrms for a good heap of experience, and I left at level 46. With Needle in my backpack, know what I did next? Here's a hint: my first kill was 'child' :) I chatted with the assassin prince, fried Filk with fireballs, got thanked by the minstrel, and wandered over to the SC. I had plenty more scrolls of magic mapping, so I shot down to SC:9 as fast as I could. I slowed myself again before making the killing blow, and the emperor moloch gave over four million xp, putting me straight to level 50. Khelavastar uncrumpled the ball of paper I handed him, and he gave me a shiny new spear! I finally retired the mithril spear of penetration I had been using for most of the game. As good a weapon as that was, it was time for a change. Now that I was armed to the gills, I ventured back to the mana temple. Ultimately, my trident didn't see much action, because I decided to fight the quick, crude and easy way - fireballs! Magic-users really have it too easy. I used to try to avoid the item destruction, but at this stage of the game I mainly want items that can't be damaged by fire. I killed Nuurag-Vaarn with slaying ammo while I kept a clear shot open with my magic. I had to wear an amulet of light instead of a torch - somehow I misplaced my flint and steel. Oh well. I finished off everything in the temple, even though that only makes future chaos servants harder. It's a matter of personal pride for me. Finally, I ventured into D:50 itself. I actually took less item damage here than I usually do. When you're doomed, monsters tend to be more experienced than usual and tend to punch through your armour more often, but this can be offset by having a character that is an utter tank. With several sources of luck and very high mana (thanks to the TotRR), most of the bad luck from dooming is countered. You still get lots of corruption, high danger of item damage in certain situations, and wilderness monsters can't stop pestering you; but overall, being doomed isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I pushed my way to the central area of D:50 with my trident (I had to enjoy it a little bit), through the mutants and writhing masses, and again I finished up the easy way - fireballs! With my polearm and my naturally high speed, the balors were all dispatched. Even at around 180 speed, each balor gave me 800,000 xp. That seems high. I finally stopped the incursion of chaos, and took a breather. Getting random mutations was becoming tiresome. I then sorted through the items on D:50 and picked out the goodies. At this stage, items definitely don't matter anymore, but I still like to pretend that I need to keep preparing myself. Even though I am forced to give up my control, perhaps Grumpy will need more potions in her future life, so I gather them for her benefit. I got my corruption cleaned by the unicorn, and went back to my treasure trove in Dwarftown. There, I collected my anvil and tools for similar reasons - a good anvil could come in handy later on. I always thought that I don't roleplay, and apparently I'm wrong about that. At last, Grumpy triumphantly returned to her homeland to rule with an iron fist. She lived long and happily with the dubious honour of having succeeded in her quest, despite the fact that the gods themselves wanted to see her fail miserably. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Screenshot ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ^^^ ^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ ^^^*^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^=====^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^..^ ^^^^===""""~~ ^*^^^&&&&&&&~~~~~~~~~~~~^*^^=======^^*^^^^^^^^^^^^.@^^ ^^^^===="""~~~~ ^^^&&&&&&o&&&&&&&~~~~~~~&&&========="""""""&&^~^^*^.^^ ^^^^"""""~~~^^^^ ^^^^^^^&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&==""""""""""&&~~~^....^ ^^"""""~~^^*^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^&&&&&&&&&""""=""""""""""&&&&&o..~^^^ ^^^"""~~~^^^^^^^*^~~~~~~^o^^^*^"""""""""""""""""""=="""""""""&&&&&&&&&&^^^ ^^~~~~~~^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^""""""""""""""""""""=""""""""&&&&&&&&&&&~~^^^ ^*^~^^^^^~~~^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^"""""&&&&"""*&&&&""""=="""""&&&&&&&&&&&&~~*^^^ ^^^*^^^^^~~~~~~"o""""^^"""""""""&&&&&&&&&......^^^^=="""""""&&o&&&&~~~~^^^ ^^^^ ^^^~~~~"""""""""""""""""&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&.^^*^^===""""""&&&&&&~~~^^^ ^^ ^^~~~~~"""""""""""""""&&&&&&&*&*&&&&&&&&&....^^^^==="""&&""&&&~~~~~^ ^^^&""""""""""""""""""&&&&&&&&&&&&&*&&&&&&&&&.""""""===="""""~~~~~^^^^^^ ^^^^&&""""""""""""""""&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&""""""==""====""~~~*^^^^^*^ ^^^*^&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&^^^*^^^^&&&&&&&&&&&&&&"""""===""""""""~~~~^^^^ ^~^ ^^^^^^^&&&&&&&&&&&&&^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^&&&&&&&&&&""""""=^^"""~^^^^^^^^^o^ ^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^+^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Grumpy St:65 Le:60 Wi:65 Dx:68 To:47 Ch:41 Ap:45 Ma:66 Pe:45 NC DV/PV:109/76 H:890(890) P:1332(1332) Exp: 50/36320330 DrCh Sp: 167 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Grumpy Race: female Dwarf Class: Bard Eye color: green Hair color: brown Complexion: brown Height: 3'8" Weight: 136 pounds Age: 65 (grown-up) Star sign: Sword Birthday: 5/Sword (day 185 of the year) YOUR HISTORY: Your parents were poor people. ok here goes Grey elven farmer Elrag St:14 Le:20 Wi:14 Dx:17 To:11 Ch: 3 Ap:22 Ma:21 Pe:23 N= DV/PV: 12/5 H: 19(19) P: 5(5) Exp: 1/28 PC: 1 Sp: 101 STATUS: got yrrigs, puppy, and kranach (yeah right) quests. in PC: 1 looking for decent weapon (spear). Didn't find it, went to VD:1 and my dog triggered a viper pit (eeek!). Ran to a dark room (pit vipers don't fight in darkness yay!) and slowly got rid of them with my bare hands (using a large shield just in case). Finished vipers. got spear. went down in VD. Found Jarhod in a kobold tension room which was no trouble and netted me the arrows which saved my life (though not ultimately). went down further. Converted chaotic altar and got to very pleased. item status identified. went down to VD:6 but got scared and decided to leave for terrinyo to sell the food I had netted (and preserve a kobold shaman corpse for later use...lol). claw bug got me down to 1hp. killed it with the bow and arrows. unfortunately, a ratling archer came upon me and I took it in melee for fear of it killing me with an arrow. Did not want to pray. Died. Ah, glad I've returned in time for this. My character: Name: Turin Race: Human Class: Beastfighter Star Sign: Wand Status: DEAD How atrocious. I hate beastfighters and humans. Stats are pretty decent though - especially the 21 St. But in spite of 12 Le I don't have Literacy :( I've named him Turin after the cursed character from Tolkien's Silmarillion. I'm off to adventure now... Edit: Man, I suck. Died within 3 minutes, thanks to good ol' overconfidence. Intended to go to druid's dungeon and level up for a bit before doing anything hasty. Got there, killed a goblin, then realised I ddidn't have pick pockets. Went back to the bandit village (killed a bandit there), tried approaching Yergius, but there was an outlaw in the way that was too tough to kill. Then decided "Ah, what the hell, might as well try and dive into the UD". Many a character has died due to such thoughts... Went to SMC, ran through trying not to kill anything, but the second room had no door. I searched for it, but got surrounded and killed. Name: Ima C. Ursed Race: female Dwarf Class: Weaponsmith Starsign: Falcon Level: 6 Status: Dead St: 18 (good) Le: 13 Wi: 10 Dx: 13 (acceptable) To: 15 (decent) Ch: 11 Ap: 10 Ma: 8 Pe: 14 (decent) RNG was kind. Dwarven weaponsmith should have a decent chance of survival, as long as I'm careful. Going for Yriggs first, then headed for PC. Wow. You won't believe how I died. My armor killed me. I found some "charged chain mail of resilience." I thought "charged" meant that it boosted my PP or something, and couldn't figure out why lightning kept ripping through my body... until it was too late. And thus it was... her own armor killed Ima C. Ursed. That is NOT how it is supposed to work... Molach: "I like to have 200+ hp and over 5 good healin potions when I do [the fire] temple. AND some way of killing the Wyrm" Morio: "Some way of killing the worm is recommended, yes :D" [Edited 1 time, last edit on 4/13/2007 at 18:24 (GMT -5) by Kirbot] |
