So I have a Gnomish Elementalist (taking a break from High Elven Barbarains after the latest YASD). He starts N= but I got him to L via amulet of order. So I sac 4000gp on an altar.

*WELCOME BELIEVER*

The ground starts to rumble.

The altar is still N and I am now NL.

What gives?

EDIT: lol that's 4000gp not 400. big difference. The altar was neutral initially

you didn't sac enough. The amount depends on how much your god likes you

so 3000+ is only for converting altars to gods who like you?

Can anyone quantify the amount needed for a deity that the PC doesn't know at all before saccing?

Conversion costs 3000+, so if you want to turn a grey altar white you'll need to sac at least that much. At early levels most monsters will do for the conversion price.

Also, you can take align hits. If you are L, and attempt to convert a C altar you will take a align hit when you first turn it C->N. So if you are borderline L then it might tip you below to N. At least I remember that my law skill told me I was transgressing the law when I did the above.

Guidebook is somewhat mystical about required amount, I've never had any problems with saccing 3000. But I often do 4-5000 if I can spare the gold, and I usually can.

I'm quite sure (but not 100%) that the amount of gold required is also affected by your Cursed/uncursed/Blessed status, or it may be the Doomed state.

I've been Cursed & Doomed, and it took more gold than otherwise.

Molach possibly got it right in saying "if you are borderline L..."

But just how L do I need to be?

I think that may warrant my getting WADOMF...

Also, you need more gold to convert altars at higher levels. I once attepted to convert an altar with 20,000 coins when I was around level 30 or 35, and my equipment got destroyed instead.

My equipment has gotten destroyed so often with converting altars that I don't even bother anymore... I try to make Dwarftown a lawful alter so I can become a lawful champion.

That's why it's common rule to have nothing but artifacts in your inventory and equipment while trying to convert altars...

Hey, that's not a rule. You're just stupid if you don't do it, that's all ;)

The only time I've had trouble with 4000gp with initially lawful characters is when I got a relationship (bad) with the neutral god who then cursed my equipment every time I converted one of his altars.

The only way I convert altars is by sacrificing a monster. Haven't gotten my equipment destroyed by this method yet.

It probably depends on my level, though, I've only attempted this with chars below level 12.
