Mindcrafters sound like so much fun to have.. but the highest level I've gotten one is... killed a couple of hobgoblins I think.

Any tips? Class/attribute distribution?

Um, willpower is your power stat, max it with herbs (sickness training will boost it higher) and items.

Vs undead you get 'backlash' damage from certain mindcrafter abilitys like mindblast and confusionwave, but not from the telekinetic bash (a power ive never actually gotten to..)

Draklings are ok, pretty tough, and there mana regens decent - also youll have their acid attack to fall back on.

The sword of nonnak and the water orb will give you a +15 bonus to your willpower.

Train missile weapons and swords and shields for when you need to get into combat.

Mindcrafters start the game being able to control teleportation - very handy.

Good luck, most of my mindcrafters are human males named Tetsuo..

Play as a gnome. Go to small cave, find down staircase, run. Train in ID or VD if you want, then go down in the UD. I occasionally scum for the birthsign candle, as it helps a budding mindcrafter that much.
Homework is not meant for home! It's a sick verbal coincidence!

Drakelings have a lot of things going for them: best Wi of all races(with DE), good St and To, good hp/mp regen, good skills. I think that they level up second slowest after trolls though, and getting levels fast is pretty important to get to use all the mindcrafting skills. So you could try something like a hurthling. Their thrown rocks are pretty good at the start, and when you find herbs all races become equally good at Wi. That's IF you can survive until you find herbs. But, play a 100 hurhtling mindcrafters and one might just make it.

That said, I've tried elves, dwarves, humans, drakelings, and they all die quite fast, so I kinda suck with mindcrafters :)
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

My mindcrafters always survive when I try mindcrafters. Just confusion blast, whack, repeat... get talents of course, and the max MP things are quite good to cast several blasts. Concentration is a good idea for fast MP regeneration. Also, just because you have mind blast, that doesn't mean you should go crazy on everything with only that. Use mind blast only for strong monsters that REALLY hit a lot in melee. Stick to confusion blast as long as you can and train melee or missile skills as well; I have a feeling that TBlast can't help you against hordes of undead. That being said, my last mindcrafter died when I realised that confusion blast still hurts me when it backlashes...

Also, don't take on large groups early on. While a confusion blast may hit a pretty line of hobgoblins, once they recover they may very well swarm you.
I never had much luck with using the "brute" races (drakes, orcs, dwarves, trolls) for mages and mindcrafters btw, even trollish wizards wave the fail flag for me.

wee=) great advice all. I'm currently on a pretty nice drake mindcrafter - though i hear drakes get in trouble in some sort of place and mindcrafters get eaten alive by skellies

Actually, I would suggest hurthling mindcrafters. Rock throwing is really helpful.

You can make a very successful mindcrafter by playing it as a fighter. A fighter who can confuse opponents.

All mindcrafters need to be played like this in the very beginning, but you can play it like that even after you get the damage spell on level 6. Focus on getting weapons and armor, and then use them. And spend mana primarily on confusion. You can both go melee and missile with success.

And of course, those mindcrafting tricks will be waiting whenever you are unable to use brute force to get past a "situation"

I played a Troll Mindcrafter this way once with success. But I would not recommend Trolls for mindcrafter because of the abysmally slow levelling.

Mindcrafters only problem, fighting-wise, is that they start with little-to-none armor, and will easily die to the first rat they meet. Tough skin talent could help in getting the first few parts of armor you need. OR if you happen to start with some +3 PV clothes.

Hobbits only lose 2 Dx or something for wearin boots, nothing bad. But Hobbits aren't very good at PP regeneration so you might have to fight more and confuse less, esp. early on, as later you can just use scrolls of power and stuff like that...
My mindcrafters tend to be HE, and they survive pretty well for me.
And well, for weapons... staves are an option because your crowning gifts only offer one weapon and that's a staff, but personally I prefer swords because *looks at forum category* there is a sword that could help you early on, though you will have to get through your archenemies first...

And you can even use it to your advantage. (For those who don't know what I want to say, train your Dx to its max. potential with boots, and you will have some extra Dx.)

Which is probably what Soirana meant ;)
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!
