What pcs are eligible to learn spells by reading books?

Are there special bonuses for classes?

Or it all depends on chars (willpower? learning?)?

Thaksn!

Well, first you need to be literate :)

Beyond that, it depens on the Literacy skill as well as the learning score if and how well you learn spells.

There are some classes, however, that will never be able to grasp even the simplest of spells. Barbarians, for example. Or mindcrafters, since they use mindcraft, not magic.

Come to think of it, these examples weren't entirely true...

Spoiler
Even barbarians and mindcrafters can learn spells, but not by reading books. They are able to use wands of wonder to gain a basic knowledge in the spell. After that, they can use the spellbooks to bookcast the spell. Costs shitloads of PP, though. And you still need to be literate ;)

By the way, I want to see someone creating an illiterate archmage...

You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

iirc, barbarians don't have special penalties to reading book if they have adequate learning/literacy.
it is more likeely beeastfighters to receive penalties. some say elementalists are not so good books.

Well, Silfir, if you *intend* to cast like that with a barbarian you had better get Great Book Caster ;)

And yeah, with fighting classes it is noticeable how they have to improve their learning quite much for that. My last winning combo, a dwarven fighter couldn't read the simplest spellbooks until he was deep in the game.

I closed the gate with my mindcrafter then got all my stats to 99 using RoW. I could learn light and darkness spells at this level but thats about it.

Finding books can be frustrating if you planned to play a semi fighter/mage combination (Paladin, Weaponsmith (yes actually)). But there is a location that has a great horde of books that can give midlevel characters a sudden boost from brawn to brain-power. Wonder where a lot of books could be found. Hm.

Your hint won't work, Molach, as the place you are talking about is referenced nowhere else in the whole game. ;)

Okay, so there is a vague reference, but no hints whatsoever as to how to reach the place.

And if there is, it's hidden so devilishly well nobody could ever hope to catch it.

Well since you asked

Spoiler
The library is what I am talking about. Filled with books, thesauruses, tomes, scrolls, and all matter of preserved arcane knowledge. It is on the wilderness, about in the center of the map, a bit West from the main dungeon. It is only reachable by the rift, though, because it is enclosed by a ring of unclimbable mountains. A dungeon that requires you to climb/fall down a great rift. The rift can be found by walking past the fire tower, then a bit more W and NW. You need to be a certain level, and some other things to go there. So it is not for the lowlevels. Really it is not.

You can dig on graves by playing some music by James Brown on winamp while standing on them. Or,

Beware digging too many graves unless, Oh let me avoid being too spoily...

Certain dead might be restless and not like you taking their things, some quite powerful. Certain graves are worth digging up more than others. And your alignment may undergo some changes.

It's not as simple as just digging.

Digging up graves isn't really advisable in most cases, IMHO.

Spoiler
You take a significant alignment drop, and you can dig up some seriously powerful, stat-draining, confusion-casting, help-summoning undead. I usually only do it when I'm absolutely desperate for a certain item. And even then, I do it very carefully (I prefer to have a means of teleportation to make a hasty escape). None of this applies to Griff's grave (except the alignment drop).
