does the christmas contest need to be a random game? A human male healer going for avatar of order, would be somewhat convenient(though originally mr j was born somewhere in the spring and calendars changed in the dark ages, but its the symbolism that counts) .

No, I don't think it's going to be random. IIRC last year it had something to do with gnomes.... :D Too lazy to check.

Anyways, feels nice to play adom again, I feel like I've found myself again ^^

E: I wasn't too lazy to check, so:

"-the contest-
The Challenge is as follows: All participants will play a male or female Gnome Merchant.

The character will be generated on christmas eve, 24th of december. (Participants can do it +/- a few days and set the computer clock accordingly if computer access is hard on the day. Do not start playing before 24th though)

This is a honorable challenge. You get one try. Take whichever birthsign you get, take the stats, take the starting items. And if you die, well note your score and submit your history of your deeds.

The goal is to score as high as possible, with some adjustments to reward more challenging play:

* Crowned champions of Chaos score higher than Balance/Order when winning.
* Dying ON the Chaos plane scores higher than regular victory.
* Ultimate victory score higher still, in this order: Chaos > Balance > Order.
* Regular Chaos God will score highest of all, on the condition that it gets submitted to the HOF.

Restoring dead charcters via save-scumming is not allowed. Otherwise backups in
case of computer failure are okay.

Challenge will end january 24th. Ish.

P.S the real objective is of course to have fun. And survive the first 4 encounters..."

That was the rules last year, we certainly don't have to use the same ones this year. I like the human healer idea, or some other Jesus theme. Bonus points for getting the platinum girdle. Being an ass-kicking, sword-wielding, fire-flingin' Jesus would be pretty damned fun :)

Alright, human healer it is, then. Now we only have to remember in time.

I think I did host it last x-mass. But being the busy bee RL I am, I am unable to do so this year. Someone else step up. Hosting really just means you need to read through the various submitted chars, and mabye make some sort of summing up. Rules are good to debate in plenum.

Last year character was modelled on Santas little helper, I seem to remember. So making Jesus Christ this year is only fitting.

I would host, but then the challange would have to be st. nick. Human priest/paladin/merchant. No chaotic acts (on purpose).

I find Jesus slaughtering large amounts of monsters to be a disturbing picture (though pacifist game wouldn't work either IMO).

I'll be visitting family around Christmas time and unlikely to be able to host. Quite probably I won't even be able to play on the day and will have to join the challenge retrospectively.

F50: Jesus vanquishing evil is wrong, but it's okay for Santa to stain his robes red...?

Darren Grey: There is no religion of Santa. I suppose thinking of Jesus' second coming would be better (in which case He would *not* be a healer btw), but I still find it somewhat offensive to play an rpg where the PC is representing Him (and therefore God?!). Ok, said like that, I find the idea *quite* offensive.

I share F50's thoughts about playing as Jesus.

I think a Santa PC might be fun though.

if playing a represental big guy is offencive, then how about a humble peasant(farmer). Since all the great religions have some sort of stories about normal people doing great things, with a help from the upstairs, going for ule with a farmer would also be quite appropriate. Christmas is still considered to be the holiest of all holy days, the farmer challenge would leave us with some leevay about how the challenge should be played. Adom is a fantasy game so it wouldn't hurt the cause to have a weirdass space alien taking down the god of chaos.

though i personally like the human male/female restriction.

I thought about going for some extra challenge since farmers are somewhat easy to play. No praying, help is rarely asked, it is deserved. No precorwning, I do not think a great valor comes from asking lots of stuff from the gods, gods do not interfere.

Farmers are easy? I find they start weak, they are very time-consuming to build up to survivability, no spectacular class powers. I could easy list 10 classes which I find a lot easier than this one. Mabye 19 even.

(Yet) another suggestion, one could just play a race/class combo of ones own choice. Only you must be able to explain why this is relevant to X-mass (or Yuletide, as it is known here in Norway)
So I could make a human/dwarven barbarian. Fitting with how Yule was celebrated by vikings in ancient times here. Food, Feasting and ultra-violence.

Farmers have one of the greatest starting weapons. The first kill is easiest(just kill the dog) and they have archery and food preservation. Everyone start weak, exept pure fighters.

The thing with hosted games is the predetermined game. If everyone plays the same character, they are easier to put in order.

F50: Santa is based off Saint Nicholas, a Christian saint who distributed toys he made to young children across Finland. I kinda find him a more disturbing image as a killer than Jesus (though South Park has depicted them both fighting side by side). Still, I understand if the Jesus thing is offensive.

There is no need to actually have a theme, though I do like Molach's idea. And a theme should be chosen for fun, not for added challenge. Most of us find the game challenging enough as it is! No need to overcomplicate things with silly rules just to make the game harder.

Then I second Molach's idea.

Here is a proposed rule set:

The character will be generated on Christmas eve, 24th of December. (Participants can do it +/- a few days and set the computer clock accordingly if computer access is hard on the day. Do not start playing before 24th though). BEFORE entering Terinyo post the following:

R/C combo.
Character's relation to Christmas.
Extra restrictions to properly roleplay the character (see below).

This is a honorable challenge. You get one try. Take whichever birthsign you get, take the stats, take the starting items. And if you die, well note your score and submit your history of your deeds. The goal is to get as far as you can in the game

NOTE: Score will NOT be considered. Roleplaying restrictions, best dungeon level, character level (lower is better), speed(?), and quests completed will replace score. Post all of these upon death/success.

Other restrictions:

1. The character *must* be roleplayed. This means that good people do not commit unlawful acts on purpose, non-magical characters do not use spells, magical characters must wield appropriate weapons (ie. NOT cow axe)), etc.

2. Limited scumming. That means you must kill less that 1500 gremlins, you may only get RoDS by dipping *once*, not spend excessively long in the ID (honor based), not pacify big room, not abuse dragon gold doubling (don't drop gold in front of dragons so that you get double back), not abuse casino gold for training with Garth.

Restoring dead charcters via save-scumming is not allowed. Otherwise backups in
case of computer failure are okay.

If you want less restrictions, find an easier person (or idea) to base the character off of! Note that a chaotic character is easier in this regard.

umm... lawfuls can't go for ultra? Can neutrals? They live, after all, in balance with good and evil.

Would drakish neutral ranger go as a grinch? He used to be evil, but saved christmas for the goodness of it. To me that's neutral.

The only way to roleplay a lawful ultra as I see it would be to play a chaotic that has a one-time change of heart or accidentally gets crowned lawful and slowly becomes truly lawful in order to fulfill the ending description. Neutrals can do ultra. Chaotic is the easiest to role play (but the hardest to attain).

EDIT: added dragon gold doubling abuse and casino gold for training with Garth to scumming restrictions

I vote for abolishing gremlin scumming entirely. Why the cap at 1500?

what's the big deal about gremlins, anyway? i tried gremlin bombs using traps and inside the watercave, but i can't really see the big benefit - they just fill up the whole area and keep dying (without dropping anything). so the only reasons would be weapon marks and pick pockets (one could use the big room, ID, summon monsters, anything aswell). also it doesn't really violates the gamespirit and roleplaying. so why is it considered cheating and frownd upon actually?

Pick pockets is the key here - you can get tonnes of stat potions, RoDSes, useful scrolls, etc, and sometimes an artifact or two after a decent amount of time. One of the big sticking points for me is that gremlin scumming is usually performed with cut-and-paste commands. There's too little effort involved for the sort of high rewards you can end up with.

Gremlin scumming is not cheating; neither is pickpocketing.

It just feels cheap to me.

The real benefit to gremlins, IMO, is to start a bomb in the CoC (in a locked room with a locked corridor for an airlock). AoLS and RoDS (for places with sufficient danger level) can be obtained in this manner quite easily and quickly by holding down a key rather than having to cut-and-paste commands or do things one move at a time.

1500 is just a number by which to say that you have been gremlin-scumming. You can get 800 gremlins killed to retrieve the phial of Caladriel, which is very useful if you want to try an ultra in this challenge (which I doubt anyone would).

Unfortunately I cannot do the same with dragon gold doubling. With casino cash, you can just agree not to use the slot machines.

The gremlin cave is a good point. As long as any character who kills his 1501st gremlin commits suicide I'm okay with it ;)

I think the general idea is that people should obey the rules and be honest about it - there shouldn't be any need to check. After all we rely on faith to make sure people don't roll a replacement character after dying.

Last time I seriously played ADOM was Christmas Challenge last year. I definitely had fun doing it. And I'm probably going to participate this one too. I should probably start practicing, you can guess I'm quite rusty.

Anyway, I like the idea of roleplaying in this challenge.

People should just be honest about the gremlin scumming thing, as there is no way to know whether someone dropped a fluff ball in the water dragon cave or not.
