Anyone noticed eating killer bugs can increase dex, decrease willpower AND INCREASE SPEED? I once got bracers of regen and seven league boots, a few cursed "hunger herbs" and 200+ ammo (High Elven Archer)with a few useful wands and entered the bug cave, came out with 40+ Dex, 150+ speed and 1 willpower though. My elven mail was damaged from (0,6) to (0,1), but of course there's 2 better pieces in the cave:)
So, in the late game, my archer was a tank after getting sun's messenger. She killed emperor moloch without it being able moving a step...

Don't recommend this for heavy spellcasters or brute force fighters. Mindcrafters? Don't ever bother going in

They increase speed, indeed ;)

Mindcrafters can do it too with heavily trained missile skillz, and spellcasters can do it with bolt and ball spells.

I mean don't recommend eating the bugs for heavy spellcasters, lol. 1 willpower is not something to laugh about

Unless their Willpower is over 25, a spellcaster can munch killer bugs with impunity. It will only take some time to regain the willpower with Morgia.

I think that it is a good idea to consider
eating greater and killer bug corpses. I do
it all the time, but I like to do it with
low level spellcasters. None of the bugs *ever*
shrug off bolt spells, 2 bolt spells(acid,
lightning, fire or frost) always kills the
GB's and 3 always kills the KB's, even with willpower at 1. I don't consider it too bad
of a handicap, to wait a while, for willpower
to get back to 25, to me it just means shorter bolt spells for a time. BUGWIL is safe enough
for a level 1 spellcaster if your careful, but BUGCAV is strictly for later.

Mindcrafters usualy start out with an offensive
wand that is capable of killing a few GB's, even
at level 1. This is very good for thier exp.
points, most of the time you can get to level 6
with just 1 kill. Level 6 is important to
mindcrafters because that is when they get thier
first offensive ability, mind blast.

About armour, DV is much more important than
PV in the Bug Temple.

I've got a human ranger with dexterity at 25, maximum potential reached, and willpower at 27, also maximum potential reached. Should I eat the bugs and get that dex up higher, or just leave it as is so I don't have to build up willpower again?

I wouldn't eat them in that case even for
the speed increase. You would have to use
sickness or starvation to get higher than
27 on DEX, if your going to do that you
could just use herbs to the same effect.

greater claw bugs get you to 32 and killerbugs to 43. max speed with corpses seems to be 236, after that even quickling queens stop being useful, i dont know about filk, but eating him got me from 234 to 236(+2 to speed seems just sad). With starvation tactic, dex can be taken even further, i hear.

And as for speed, archer with 230+ speed, lightning shot and lvl 15 missile weapons, get awesome amounts of shots before anything moves. This combined with dex 99(boosted or othervice) gets missile damage to 100+ with normal bows.

Been a while since revisiting the site. killer bugs takes dex over 30 easily and 40 is not impossible. For fighter classes, even trading willpower for dex can be a good option, let alone this also increases precious speed. However, i never go bugcav without seven league boots and some form of healing, regen or herbs. I tried backing up save file and entered without 7LB once, OMG, chased to death by extremely experienced killer bug...
By the way, 200+ speed? Are you cheating? That speed is just too insane for me. How many quicklings have you killed :)

I got over 200 speed once too. Quickling tree and killer bug munching gets you there.

Won't all that speed decrease your lifespan a bit, becoming deadly for certain races?

Also, won't 200+ speed decrease your xp gained by a lot?

Once you get 200 speed, you don't need to be that high level to kick ass. You'll get level 50 either way if you fight enough monsters. (Wyrms on the final level of the BDC should give lots, balors on D:50 too - with high speed, Sraxxarrakex is a lot easier)

Decrease lifespan? You're confusing it with the eating of quickling royalty corpses, I think. They, but only they, decrease lifespan by a fairly hefty 25% if eaten. Which you can remedy with potions of longevity. All other ways to increase speed are harmless. (Killer bugs destroy Willpower, obviously)

About lifespan: Do you know if the effects of royal quickling corpses and longevity potions are cumulutative or do you only get 25% once? Could you get an elven lifespan for an ork with enough ! of longevity?

That makes orcish assassins/wizards/potion merchants/necromancers look rather attractive.

Soirana: do you happen to know how much one !oLongevity increases lifespan ? Obviously the B/U/C status affects it but is it a constant amount (like 10 years per potion) or relative ?

i can quote part of assassin guide:

<<one of them --- orc vs.long lived talent.

Average max age for orc - 42 years. Gain by talent 14 years. (56 still horrible)
Effect of blessed potions of longevity in 12-29 (pretty independent from race and original age - orc vs elf evaluation was done)years area. I digged some old research on net. No diving but AdomSage or something like that was used. (if you press my ass against a wall i can repeat research using original method with save-reload.)

So one potion is equivalent to talent... >>

honestly i didn't test B/U/C status.

orc vs elf testing gave minor diferences something like each potion gave elf +2 years more. i had some empyric formula, but i can't access my test result file right now. as i remember my evaluation was something like x+3d7 (or d6), there x is slightly dependent on race.

it is random amount not depending on current max age, so they don't become less effective after using even bunch of them.

They do increase past the potential, just not past the limit for corpses, which is something like 30-35.

i got to 78 in dex when starvation training was used and I've obtained 83 with starvation + sickness training. I *highly*(!!!!!!!) recommend that raiding the bug temple is done food pres at 100. Othervise it'll get difficult after the temple is cleared. The cave should not be battered unless speed is over 170 or it'll get deadly.

""Potions of Longevity alter your maximum age as follows:

Cursed: -1d4
Uncursed: +2d6 (Average of 7)
Blessed: +4d8 (Average of 18)

Here's the corpse effects:

Quickling Bard: [Cursed:5%:+2d3PP; Uncursed:25%:+2d3PP; Blessed:50%:+2d3PP], 16.7%:+1Ma, (1d5+2 Speed), -25%MaxAge
Quickling King: (1d5+2 Speed), -25%MaxAge
Quickling Lord: (1d4+1 Speed)
Quickling Queen: (1d5+2 Speed), -25%MaxAge
Quickling: (1d3 Speed)
Killer Bug: -12Wi, (+6Dx) (+4 Speed)
Greater Claw Bug: -6Wi, (+3Dx), (+2 Speed)

And finally, here's the list that shows you your cahnces at an increase depending on what your current speed is:

0-119 : 100%
120-139: 57.95%
140-159: 15.90%
160-179: 3.88%
180+ : 0.78%"" - Twinge

I personally favour the quickling tree although time runs 'fast' there. I usually speed myself up in the late game, and my WI tends to be a lot higher than 25 by then so the bargaining DE and speed for it isn't worth it anymore.
