When I go to the dungeon for the puppy quest I can never find the puppy at all. Am I missing something here? Or is this some sick twisted humor directed at me for not knowing the meaning of life?? I have tried to find it but coming up epty so far!!

P.S. Just want to say that I love what I see of the game but this is getting annoying. 5 Characters in and still no stupid puppy. :(

The puppy is on the 6 level of the puppy cave (the dungeon NE of the town, next to the road). If you get there too late it's dead and you'll only find a corpse.

If you're new to the game I suggest not investing many characters on the puppy quest. It's meant to be a challenge, and can easily kill many low level characters. Concentrating too much on completing it can be very frustrating.

The "where do you go first"-thread might give you some ideas for a different approach.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Unfortunately, there were no stairs there. I checked everywhere in the dungeon. On my 6th character the stairs finally showed up. I have had this happen to me with the village dungeon as well. I get to a certain level and it just ends prematurely. Don't know why that happens though.

Thanks for letting me know that the puppy quest is meant to be a challenge. I thought it was for new players as you can get the quest really early on.

There ARE stairs, you just don't know where they are.
Here's a tip - there are hidden doors, that you must 's'earch for. Usually with the :ws command (continuous search).
And get used to it, the dungeon levels are randomly generated each time you enter one for the first time.
A trick is to search for hidden doors with

Spoiler
using the 'k'ick command on walls - a wall that gives the message "you hurt your leg" is a normal wall. If it "really hurts your leg" then it's a hidden door, or a pre-set, undiggable wall, which some dungeons have, usually those with special features.
A level should take the whole screen, if it doesn't, theres a hidden door somewhere. If you can't see a down staircase, there's a hidden door somwhere.
And there will be hidden doors which lead to just an empty room, since it's random.
Yes, it's frustrating. Welcome to ADOM :P

Thanks for the advice here. I only have one more question and I promise I will leave everyone be. The :ws command. Do I have the just press w and then s. When I do that though it doesn't seem to be continuosly search.

You can just press the 's' button
repeatedly, thats what I do, if you use continuous search, monsters can approach
you while your searching

If you press the 'w' and then the 's'
you are searching. To verify this you
can press the ':' and then the 't' 4 times.
This will change the dynamic display(the
area at the bottom right of your screen,
that currrently displays your speed). It
should now display the elapsed game turns,
this will let you monitor precisely how
many turns you are searching.

The dungeon levels usualy are kind of
balanced, after exploring as much of the
dungeon as possible, if you notice a large
blank area at say the upper left of the
screen, that's probably where your secret
door is near.

I know this is off topic but, if you are
new to ADOM, I think the best advice is
to play PC's with lots of Toughness to
start out. Trollish and Drakish Healers,
and such, should be easier to keep alive
at the begining.

If you're a total newbie -> orcish barbarians
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!
