What is the policy on posting cheating methods in the forum? I have stumbled onto the ultimate cheat.

It ruins gameplay, since you soon ave all skills at 100 and all stats at 99 (as well as most equipment), but I am taking a break from playing ADOM for real, anyway.

Well we do discuss here very scummy tactics and abuse of bugs - I think even the piety-loop scum has been discussed here (oft considered the worst scumming possible in the game, partly because it was discovered purely through code-diving, and I don't know of anyone here who actively uses it). And I'm sure many people here have used back-up wish engine chars or WADOMF on old versions to test things out.

But eh, what you're saying sounds... impossible. I'm curious - very curious. Not something I'd use seriously - just for testing, if even that, but I'm really wondering what the hell you could be talking about here. So you can't stay silent now, it'd be tortuous :/

Pray pray pray, piss off your God, then keep praying, then keep praying, eventually your God gets really pissed off, then pray pray pray, your God is becomes so pissed off his level of pissed offness loops around and he loves you lots.

That is to say - if you pray a lot, your piety drops. If you pray even more, your piety becomes a large negative integer. At some point, because of a programming bug - a classic integer overflow - the large negative integer which is your piety becomes too big for the game to handle, and it loops around to become a really huge positive integer.

This allows you to precrown as often as possible (limited by no of artifacts generated of course.

The tactic is not without problems - some degree of skill is required to use piety overflow effectively, as your God will be sending many energy bolts in your direction, and lots and lots of dangerous monsters, although darkened levels of the ID can be used to minimise the risk, you still need to have a reasonably buff PC to survive...

Or maybe not. People don't really have the idea of doing something like this usually, and people who actually use this will see no fun in the game and will not enjoy it - serves them right & good riddance, I'd say.

Regarding the 'ultimate cheat', I say post it.
After reading through some of the HoF, I think
that even if players do abuse piety (or other
things/bugs), they at least are inclined to say
so in their edited flg file. I respect that, it
lets everyone decide for themselves how valid
the victory was.

I think piety abuse and wish engines break the
game, but as long as players say so in the flg,
it can still make interesting reading. I learned
a few non-scum things, when reading through the
top few flg's in the ADOM 1.1.1 winners section,
most of which had some scumming.

Regarding the discovery of piety abuse, only
through code diving. I'm kind of surprised, that
no one discovered how to abuse that legitimately.
I actually (unfortunately) discovered the piety
integer overflow bug myself, with no cheating. I
sacced a zillion (casino) gold pieces, and my
diety hated me. I never thought to try to find a
way to use it the opposite way though. To make
my diety love me.

To be honest, I got the impression (dont remember form where though) that it was discovered by accident, but who knows?

If someone used piety overflow in a game, and then posts in their flg, piety overflow used, then thats fine by me - some very interesting games have been completed that way - Blitz at No 3 for instance, on the 1.1.1 HOF. That flg is a pretty good read.

I have not been in this forum for sometime, so I do not know if anybody else has mentioned this.

I want to go and find out what happens for all the permutations of the endings:

C- with crown, amulet and sceptre but no mana battery
C- with crown, amulet and sceptre and battery
C- champion with trident (with and w/out battery corruption)
C- non-champion with trident (with and w/out bettery corruption)
C- where pet kills Andy
C- use trident to reach Andy, then drop it and kill him with some other weapon (or, at least, drop it before the final blow)

N= champion with trident (with and w/out bettery corruption)
N= non-champion with trident (with and w/out bettery corruption)
N= where pet kills Andy
etc.

Needless to say, I am not about to play the game all the way through 50 times, so I am going to be save-scumming. I also figure that it will be difficult to coordinate Andy's demise with my pet, etc.

I also want to finally reach that darn Gremlins cave while playing a Trollish witch named Caladriel.

I have found the ultimate item duplication cheat. After finding a potion of exchange and holy water, I used this cheat, and now have a low level character with 100 in all skills and 99 in all stats (as well as hundreds of blessed identify scrolls, magic mapping scrolls and, thanks to hundreds of potions of exchange, just about every piece of equipment I could want)

Spoiler
Preparation: Use the most recent version of ADOM
1) Choose an inconsequential dungeon level > 1
- We will call this the target level
- I chose the carpenter level 2
- It works best if the level above has its 'up' and 'down' stairs in adjacent rooms
2) Drop an expendable item while on the target level, then climb the stairs
- We will call the level above the Source level
- As I said, this works best if the source level has its 'up' and 'down' stairs in adjacent rooms
3) Under your adom directory, go to the adom_dat\tmpdat sub folder.
4) Record the name of the most recently touched file
- This represents the level file for the target level
5) Next to the 'down' stairs of the source level, drop anything you do not want to duplicate, so that you are only carrying items you want to duplicate
- You should leave all your equipped items equipped, though
6) Stand on the 'down' stairs of the source level

Duplication Process
1) Drop all items
- ":d", "+" then "<enter>"
2) In the adom_dat\tmpdat subdirectory, delete the level file for the target level.
- You should have recorded its name in step 4) of the preparation
2) Descend the stairs
- Adom will detect an error, save your game then exit
3) Start adom again
- You will find yourself on the 'down' stairs of a copy of the source level. This copy includes the items you dropped, but ADOM will consider you to be on the target level.
4) Pick up all items
5) Climb to the source level
6) Goto 1)

Result:
Every time you drop your items in step 1), you will be doubling the pile of items (ie. adom duplicates the items of the source level every time it recreates the target level. You pick the copies up, then return to the source level, which still has the original items)

With two command prompt windows open, I found that I could do this 10 times in 2 minutes, resulting in 1024 of all the items types I wanted. Then it was just a matter of dipping into blessed potions of exchange and duplicating results once I found what I was looking for (while periodically reduplicating my potions of exchange):

Potions:
Gain Attributes
Education
Ultra Healing
Exchange
Holy Water
Unholy Water
Insight
Carrot Juice
Troll Blood
Rust Removal

Scrolls:
Magic Mapping
Identify
Uncursing
Defense
Protection
Melee accuracy
Melee Damage
Education
Satiation
repair

stomafillia herbs

With the potions of exchange:
My 1024 tools gave me fireproof and waterproof blankets.
My 1024 rings yielded rings of ice, fire, fish and slaying
My 1024 boots yielded 7 league boots
My 1024 helmets yielded helmets of water breathing
My 1024 books yielded almost every book

Note: For some of the better items, you may have to carry your equipment to a higher danger area (like the dwarven halls) before dipping in blessed potions of exchange. However, with 99 strength, along with a clothes of carrying (thanks to dipping 1024 armors) you should have no problem lugging the stuff around.

Actually, I knew that one already.
Back in ADOM 1.0.0 it was a lot
easier. Just drop your stuff (I
used the first level of the puppy
cave), exit the level, backup the
tmp-file (I think PC_1 if memory
serves), re-enter, pick up your
items, exit the level, re-enter,
restore the tmp-file and repeat.

The feature in ADOM 1.1.1 about
the game giving an error, saving,
and exiting, was implemented to
hinder (not stop) this methods
of item reproduction. Or at least
I think I remember reading that
in a bug-fix file long ago.

I never actually investigated
how to circumvent the ADOM 1.1.1
hinderance, because of easier
cheating methods. I always just
used Gamehack, if I wanted to test
something, and now there is Adombot
which would make things even easier.
Personally, I would consider this
method about equivelant to using
Adombot. OK for testing stuff, but
not for the HoF.

DEFINITELY not for the HoF. There's no challenge whatsoever involved after employing this cheat. No challenge, no game, no fame.

No point doing it in a game cause it's (just like savescumming) definitely not really an in-game trick. Downloading someones archmage savegame instead would be less trouble.

Yeah, it isn't even scumming - it's outright cheating, and for that there are other potentially easier methods. The handy thing about this I guess is that you can do it with any character at any time. Interesting to know anyway.

The OP said this was the ultimate cheat, so a cheat is what was promised, and that it is. Could be useful, if you want to experiment with multiple ... somethings.

I've heard about one giving you a wand of wishing with 65543 charges at the start of the game, that would fall in the same category, and probably be the one called ultimate. But you can't wish for everything, so duplication could have a use too. For testing, like.

What are the definitions?
I'm thinking-
Cheat: Altering game from "the outside". Altering data files/directory deletion. By this definition "savescumming" is, in fact, cheating.

Abuse: Used inside the game, abuse is usage of bugs in programming to gain advantages. I would list negative piety wraparound-effect and dragon doubling effect as unintentional results of programming glitches (that is guaranteed subjective, no need to do the debate again, only the Creator could end that).

Scumming: Using game mechanics to gain advantages. This will sometimes be just as effective as abuse and even cheating, but differs in that it is the result of imbalance in game mechanics. Examples would anything from "Wish engine" and "Gremlin bomb" through to "ID-stair-scumming"(going just up and down and clearing the same room) and even include hazy things like "Staying ID a long while", "Excessive smithing", "Overzealous herb gathering", "Precrown scumming (say, getting 2 or 3)", or even "Excessive fighting/spellcasting for weapon/spell skill levels"

I do think (not clear though) that by HoF rules only cheating is outlawed. The rest are honorary, and of course the difference between "abuse" and "scum" is fine, and do you guys really think "excessive fighting" is a scum? Where does the line go?

I just play the way I like.

Cheating for research I do. Too bad I'm to stupid to make anything other than savescum work. Heh.

Any repetitive task done in the game to improve your character is scumming in my opinion. Many of these things I do myself, but there's some I prefer to avoid (starvation scumming for stats, gremlin bombs, excessive ID scumming, early game dragon gold doubling (after casino I see no problem in abusing this)), but obviously what's acceptable depends on the player - as long as they're honest about it.

If you mess around with the game's files, it's more hacking than cheating. Cheating is, in my ears, using the cheat codes that come with most games.

Also, there is scumming and there is exploiting. My definition of scumming is consistent with that of Darren Grey's. Exploiting is when you are actively making use of a bug or unintended features in the game to gain advantages.

Piety overflow, for instance, is an exploit. The Creator forgot to set a fixed minimum of how negative piety can get, and you're making use of that by having it wrapping around.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.

excessive fighting isn't scumming. TB made monsters get tougher as u kill more of them. overzealous herbing and smithing are mandatory to survive. wish engine is, but gremlin bomb quickly gets out of hand and is (relatively) worth the reward. see above.
