I just started a game with a gnomish druid, level 2.
Talked to a giant frog and it said "Kiss me and I'll become a prince!".
Decided to say yes, and he turned into a prince, left me the stuff he does.

Is that supposed to happen? Is the frog quest a thing you can just do like that, no pool draining required?

Screenshot or it didn't happen ;-) Kidding, ADOM probably still has bugs like that. Was it a male char btw?

Why on earth were you talking to frogs anyway? If you go looking for bugs, thou shalt find them.

Female char ofcourse. Happened again, with another female druid in the next game. Three times at that, got the prince 2 times and a wart once.

Why did I talk to frogs? Because I always talk to non-hostile monsters if I'm not busy. A way of saying "hello, thanks for not wasting my time with fighting".

EDIT: screenshots were required, and sceenshot ye shall recieve.
Made a fresh char, female gnomish druid, for the sake of consistance (5 talents but 8 Le).
Went out to the swamp and encountered frogs. Two tries, one wart, one prince:
The giant frog croaks: "Kiss me and I'll become a prince!" (more)

The chance for a prince seems 50% - the fith and final frog of that encounter also gave me a wart. It's also worth noting that frogs that give a wart a and grin at you go hostile if you try to talk to them again, until they just "croak in anger", refusing to speak to you.

Apparently, every neutral frog has a chance of being the prince, meaning a Druid can complete the quest with ease...

It seems it's not really a 'quest' and the frog princess from pools is just there to inform you that you can do it and give you a gift.

What stuff do you get from the quest again? Could it be considered a kinda scummy way of female druids getting some cash early on from selling the items? (at the risk of losing lots of Ap of course)

It's junk - a diadem of beauty, an amulet of beauty, a potion of beauty, sometimes cursed, which I found out the hard way: "yeey, no wart! 'D'rink. Wait, dammit!".
And some gold - about 4x normal gold drop (120-250 for that lvl 1 char in the wilderness, ~1200 for a higher level one, forgot where - either UC or the puppy cave 4-5 )

Well, I suppose technically you could lure a bunch of friendly frogs to a higher danger level area and get a lot of money. Not really worth the effort though...

After testing with a grey elf - finding giant frogs in the wilderness for this in an utter waste of time and resources.
Not only did I get attacked by undead quite often, but out of the 5 frogs I finally found 4 gave me a wart and the last turned into a prince and gave me a cursed potion of beauty.
Yeey, for going from 20 to 15 appearance. If I wanted my stats drained, I would have gone to the black druid, thank you.

You should. Females > males. In most good RPG games I've played (Fallout 1 was the only one I can think of that had better goodies for males only).

I willfully (and exclusively) play male gray
elves, when trying to beat the game in under
24000 turns. The reason is simple, I know of no
other race/gender combo, that can come CLOSE to
pulling it off. The fairer gender just doesn't
do as well, for me at least.

The top spots in the HOF have quite a number of
male gray elves. If memory serves, moreso than
any other race/gender combo.

I would rather have one point of strength than
lower shop prices, they mean little to me, and
gold isn't hard to get. In the early game, there
are the criminal killing quests, they yield
~5500. For the mid game, there is the arena, and
the Si. Then the casino.

I was unaware that males recieved only one point
of additional strength. My observations led me
to believe differently.

Eyes can deceive... :)

That one point of strength doesn't make a difference in most cases because it is among the easiest stats to train anyway when it's under 19, and male gray elves are usually that low.

I looked around a bit, to try to find info on
the gender differences. The guidebook had little.
I even did a search of the improved guidebook,
which yielded nothing extra.

I searched google groups and found some info that
seemed a bit sketchy to me, but did indicate only
a +1 strength bonus for males. Also some
indication that males level faster, but I don't
know how much faith to put in that research
either.

The ADOM manual says "(in ADOM female characters
are more agile, male characters are slightly
stronger)." which also indicates only a +1 strength bonus.

Still, when I have tried female PC's it always
seemed to me, that they were much more difficult
to keep alive in the early game. Maybe the
difference was just my in my imagination, but for
now, males seem to work better for me.

If you want a really high Appearance, you can do that. But Appearance is only useful for females, and then only in shops.
