I was reading some older posts when I found a rather interesting one describing a method I never tested back then... Anyway, Chaos roulette means that you dip items into potions of raw chaos and they get turned into a random item of the same kind, very much like blessed potions of exchange, except any item heaps dipped turn into a single cursed item, for example 19 rings yield just one cursed random ring. Downside is, that sometimes the item explodes, dealing an enormous amount of damage ~150-250 IIRC and deals 2-4 corruptions. Thus the name 'chaos roulette'. !oRC are easily obtained via dipping any potions with scythe of corruption or any artifact that contains the essence of chaos and corruption, though sometimes you 'spill' some of the !oRC and get some corruption points. Now, someone had found out that the explosion occurs when the item turns into itself, so dipping high danger lvl items on a low danger level, they can't turn into themselves, so no explosions can ever occur. Obvious benefits are dipping high level amulets at D:2 into !oRCs hoping for an AoLS. Or high metal boots hoping for 7LBs on corresponding level. I tested this today using about dozen high lvl amulets on D:2, no explosions occured though I didn't get an AoLS. I did spill potions but the received corruption seems fairly small - no corruption manifested from 5-8 spills. The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt. [Edited 1 time, last edit on 2/10/2008 at 18:56 (GMT -5) by Ashandarei] |

I imagine AoLS would be fairly rare, since there are a lot of low level amulets that you're more likely to get. Certainly worth a shot if trying to get the steel amulet though - you're bound to get lucky with some chars. Are there many amulets/necklaces that actually count as higher than level 2? I'm not sure if any work's been done to see if the likes of elemental gauntlets reduce the corruption from spillages, but it sounds like the results are low enough anyway. I've tested the potions a bit. The thing that stood out to me, maybe just a coincidence, was that if I dipped a cursed item into the potion, it was very likely to explode. Interesting theory, that the potion only explodes if the RNG selects the same item as the one you dipped. Is this proveable? Well, I don't know how to prove it, except testing it numerous times. There was some discussion about it, and IIRC the information was gained using exe digging. The rust monster touches your blessed Trident of the Red Rooster. Nothing happens. You laugh at the monster's pitiful attempt. |

Has anybody had a blessed or uncursed item explode? "As for me, I feel priveleged to be among the only species able to make scientific inquiries." -unknown "Be sure to keep your distance if you don't have resistance." -DG |

Y'know, I was doubtful of this being all that useful since I figured that most amulets will be low level. It turns out to not really be the case. The following amulets are safe to dip in danger level 2: amulet of order amulet of chaos amulet of teleport control amulet of health pendant of mana amulet of free action necklace of the silver tongue amulet of balance amulet of the cold heart amulet of water breathing amulet of luck amulet of speed amulet of hunger That's just under half the amulets in the game. I think in future I'll be hoarding those amulets of health for this purpose... Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

It's too bad there are so many worthless amulets. How many do people actually use? AoLS Amulet or necklace or whatever of Regeneration Amulet of free action Amulet of paralization resistance Amulet of death ray resistance "As for me, I feel priveleged to be among the only species able to make scientific inquiries." -unknown "Be sure to keep your distance if you don't have resistance." -DG |

Amulets, in order of (in my opinion) uselessness. Brass, useless and doesn't even sell for much. Chaos, many other fun ways to get this benefit. Greed, the only gold I get from it, is by selling it. Beauty, the AP stat just doesn't mean much. Silvir tongue, at least the shopkeepers like this one. Mana, gives an extra few PP's, that most PCs don't need. Hunger, RARE, and other stuff works better. Petrif resist, helps against one monster in the game. Rabies resist, BARELY useful for the early game. Of the eye, situationally useful. I won't do the rest, because most are pretty useful. Protection against undead and contructs - does anyone ever use them? Amulets are especially worthless when you consider there's a guarunteed very nice artifact one. Quite a lot of my characters get Preserver too. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

Can't believe I left those out! I would put them between silver tongue, and mana. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

I've used protection against undead and constructs when fighting undead and constructs, but more because I though they would help, what with being named that way and all... You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction?
