Thrundarr issued me a Shadow Lord as his first quest. Any ideas on where to find one without going past the animated forest? And no, I'm not going to the dwaven halls.

Tomb of the High Kings, level above Darkforge, Unremarkable Dungeon, ID as already recommended. Maybe even one in the pyramid along with Rehetep.

You could try the dwarvin graveyards, though invisiblity is a must, ghosts and all. Also bring undead slaying ammo for lichs.
You attack the Ancient pink dragon with all of your force, but do not mange to harm it! The Ancient Pink Dragon breaths a deathray, poision, fire, acid, ice, lightning, water, corruption, missle, petrefication, and stun breath at you. All of your equipment is torn apart! You die...

Looks like Thundarr pulled another "Ha ha! Now I will make it impossible for you to prove yourself! Bring me a cupcake! With sprinkles!".

My winners and high level dead characters have 3-4 Shadow Lords on their kill list.

Shadow lords are goddamn rare. Had them for my first quest too.

The cavernous levels of the Tomb of the High Kings are your best shot, if you are strong enough, because you get lots of XP and treasure there, which means your time won't be wasted.

To be fair, I find "Kill a shadow lord to prove your valour" far more logical than, say, "Kill a goblin to prove your valour". I mean, taking out a badass powerful undead, that's hero stuff. Killing a goblin even one of the dwarven children in Dwarftown could defeat in hand to hand combat? How ist that proving your "valour"?

I wonder if you got killed by a shadow lord, then became a shadow lord, then committed suicide, if that would count.

*sigh*
Crap.
I already tried the pyramid. No luck.
I guess I'll go for the tomb of the high kings or the dwarven graveyards, but what really sucks is that my char is a mindcrafter, high level undead may be a problem.

Shadow lords are lvl 13 monsters. I recommend also ToHK dungeons. Or lvls above dwarven halls if you are feeling lucky, though monster generation is a lot smaller there.

They're not that tough to kill, and not really too uncommon in my experience. They look just like normal shadows, and I normally don't notice it's a lord until I get the message that I've just killed it. Shouldn't be too hard to find in the high kings dungeon, though it could take a bit of patience.

Wait this was Shadow Lords? I have to read carefully from now on, this font color sort of strains my eyes. If you would ask me I would say to look for a auto dooming item (if you are realy that desperate), and wait in a semi hard level, the big room would be a nice choice since you could run away, come on shadow lords are some of the slowest monsters in the game! Ooor if you aren't that desperate try the Tomb of high kings or if you get lucky wish for one.

For the love of god, don't wish for a shadow lord if you get a wish. There are a lot of things out there you can use that wish on which are far more of a benefit.

YAY!!
I got lucky and found one in the big room while i was clearing it out for herbs. I know the big room can generate out of depth monsters, but that seemed way too easy. I found him before i had even finish exploring the whole floor. I wonder if Thrundarr's quest makes that particular monster more likely to appear? Or maybe i just got really lucky.

Thank god he diddn't take my wish suggestion sserious. Someone needs to make a guide about Thudaars quest. Now for the sake of sakeness I hope you diddn't become the arena champion, and you have a potion of exchange, if you care about your kitty karma. If you do 'calm monster' helps, allot, well I found it did.

There are several ways to save your kitty karma in the arena:

1. Aforementioned potion of exchange (shouldn't be cursed)
2. Wand of trap creation and knowledge of the trap layout (You need a teleportation trap)
3. Scroll of familiar summoning
4. Necromancy
5. Other means of summoning: Druid, Beastfighter, Elementalist, Necromancer class powers; wand of monster creation or Summon Monsters spell plus alarm trap or musical instrument to either make the monster attack the cat or maybe tame the monster
6. Teleportation spell or wand of teleportation (use it on the cat, not yourself! Scrolls might not be targetable, though)

Calm Monster doesn't help with much, does it? Unless the fight is ended if the cat isn't hostile you anymore...

no don't worry about his other quests, I've already done them. I've been playing for about 8 years now. It's just the first time Thrundarr has given me such an obscure monster.
On a somewhat related note, after clearing the big room, all of the herbs had died(thanks to several dark elven spider factories). I used several potions of holy water to create a 4x4 square with one missing, and now the other square refuses to regenerate! I have spent several thousand turns waiting, can a floor lose it's herb generating properties??

Scrolls of teleportation are not targetable.

I have never heard of a room losing the ability
to regenerate herbs. If your other three herb
patches haven't dissapeared, they should regen.

Spoiler

Try applying the herbalism skill while standing
on each herb patch. If you then pick carefully,
it is safe to harvest until the herb bush becomes
'withered'. Perhaps even if the extra square
won't regen, maybe the three you do have might
'suddenly look more vigerous'.

Also, if you have (or can get) the gardening
skill and an herb seed, you can make the room
support herbs again.
