Ehh. Just lost promising lvl 11 dwarven assassin with nice heap of daggers&knives with various prefixes and suffixes. Just one of those little bees did its 'kamikaze' attack and I died afterwards from around 30 hp to -2 in single turn, and what pisses me off is that he had poison resistance!

So! Is there really a quaranteed amount of damage while poisoned, I mean the damage interval is pretty random and so does the damage. Sometimes its like every 5 turns and does only about 2-5 dmg and so...

WTF!? more than 30 dmg from poisoning and having poison resistance!

/edit forgot to say that it was I who died on poison (not the bee) :D

Poison comes in various degrees. From ~60 to 1-2.
I don't think poison resistance lowers damage, just speeds up recovering from poison, which means each time you get less damage, since you're poisoned less.

So a death ooze poison will still deal a lot of damage at first.

Poison resistance can reduce the damage, and more importantly improves recovery. But if you get a lot of poisoning hits they all stack, and some creaures have stronger poisoning attacks than others, so a swarm of bees or a quickling queen can cause even the most resistant character to be very quickly drained of HP. In those circumstances it's best to use a potion of cure poison to instantly relieve yourself, rather than relying on the resistance.

And remember to use Slow Poison instead of Neutralize Poison if you're that heavily poisoned.

After reading the OP, the only explaination
I can think of, is that you were doomed and
didn't know it. Or maybe you were in the SMC,
but even then, it shouldn't have been THAT
bad.

Since this is in the non-spoiler forum, I am not
sure wether to sensor this or not. I will tag it,
just in case, but I don't think it's spoily.
Just a bit of advice on handling early game
sever poisoning. Which you probably already know
anyway.

Spoiler

The frequency that your PC recieves damage from
poison, is determined in large part, by HOW
poisoned you are. A mild poisoning will inflict
small damage, perhaps every 7 turns, occuring less
frequently as time passes. A severe poison will
inflict more damage, perhaps every turn.

If mildly poisoned, just wait it out. If severely
poisoned, you can pray for healing of HP's, and
for healing of poison. Remember though, the poison
healing will not occur, if you are missing even a
SINGLE HP. For this reason, you must not pray as
soon as you are severely poisoned. Doing this will
cause you to be healed a bit, but leave you with
severe poisoning. It is possible (probable) that
right after you pray, you will suffer a HP loss.
Thus ruining your chance for a devine poison
healing, if you only have two prayers available.

For severe poisoning, wait as long as you can,
before praying. You will have a good idea of how
close to cut it, based on how much damage is being
inflicted each turn. Wait for the damage to happen,
THEN pray two times consecutively. This will heal
HP's and remove poisoning.

The best advice for not getting poisoned.

Bring a missle weapon, and always keep an eye out for a quick escape.
You attack the Ancient pink dragon with all of your force, but do not mange to harm it! The Ancient Pink Dragon breaths a deathray, poision, fire, acid, ice, lightning, water, corruption, missle, petrefication, and stun breath at you. All of your equipment is torn apart! You die...

Alrunia herbs also work for this, even if they are cursed. Lacking those or potions of cure poison, using first aid immediately after taking poison damage can give you back some or all of the HP you lost, and train the first aid skill. Which is a great thing, because for a lot of characters, first aid goes up very very slowly.

Another thing, if you have regenration gear (necklace, rings, bracers, crown, artifacts) put it all on, the HP gain can potentially negate the poison damage.

Usually you have five different incarnations of poison removal before your get your hands on even a single ring of regeneration.

It can be that its the poison stacking issue that led to that mad amount of damage. It was on D:4 so it wasnt in bad danger level, relying on poison resistance I went and kicked that bee hive trying to generate more bee wax as it should do - got swarmed by like dozen of bee warriors. Fought them well and ascended back to Arena level (D:3) to freeze bee generation, and then just died... In one turn.

Well I had several herbs with me but usually im not using them before I have identified them (I had no herbalism).

Multiple bee stings can be very dangerous, ok you saw only one.

Is there really only one level of poison resistance/immunity. I got the feeling there was more than one but I have no evidence.

There is the intrinsic, and you can get additional poison resistance from some artifacts or (I believe) whips of the snake. Assassins become immune to poison late in the game.

I've had a bunch of characters die to poison.

The nastiest way, is with a great new character who walks through the dungeon and steps on a hidden pit trap. Then about 5 pit vipers pop out and immediately start attacking you. Their poison is very deadly, and multiple hits all but assure your demise, even if you have two prayers

Another bad way to go is getting overconfident with those bee hives or just a rattlesnake or cobra when you're hurt. Stone Oozes usually show up later in the game and deep in the CoC, by that point you have many options for taking them out.

Aaaahh. I hate pitvipers, they are like instant death sentence to your character. I have had many many many potential-looking characters die to them early. Even on like exp lvl 10. Main reason why I love detect traps so much.

Without those two starting prayers, early game survival for most characters would be at least twice as difficult.
