My newest character to manage to get off the ground! Haven't really generated any artifacts, but the game gave me a pair of 7LB's recently. Have cleared PC/UD/DD/DDL/VDDL, and have found 2 scroll shops, a pool, and have steady herb sources in DDL and UD:7. Not to mention the big room (took me FOREVER to pacify, had to lure a wererat all the way across the room unfortunately), where i managed to stabilize 4 herb squares, one of morgia/moss, one with stomas, one with spenseweeds, and one with alraunia/curaria mancox. Also have run into about half a dozen(!), maybe more, lesser vaults. I don't think i saw that many on my ENTIRE playthrough with my GE Wizard. Haven't precrowned or anything of that sort of thing yet, but it should come sooner or later, with my steady stoma (first time i got a steady source of that actually).

I guess now its to dwarftown and serious herb gathering for stat-training, just thought i'd post this as it seems the RNG is setting me up for a fall, lol. Even if that is the case, I'm just happy I got a char off the ground! (Since that Wiz, i've tried playing 3 dozen or so character, who all either died very quickly, or with which i did something stupid and ruined early, such as a promising archer getting her equip turned to dust, doh!)

A few questions:

1) What is the best way to develop learning a bit? Only at Le14 atm, need more to read my books.

2) What's the best way to drop my alignment a bit if i want a precrown instead of a crowning?

3) nothing else atm!

Learning is the most difficult stat to train ...
It gets trained by reading books/scrolls.
So if you have any useless scrolls (like one by Rehetep) keep reading them. Or use scrolls of defense/protection, to beef up your equipment.

If you have gemology, then dig for CoK, though they are difficult to find.

For alignment - its easy, wait on the dwarftown stair, so some dwarf is close to you, take him/her up/down and kill

Reading scrolls only really helps with Literacy, as far as I'm aware (a ratling pamphlet is better than the papyrus scroll because it doesn't create an array of annoying messages). Reading them for Learning is probably a major waste of time - swapping stats around with potions of exchange after toughness, willpower and dexterity have been maxed is far better, if you don't have access to crystals of knowledge per Gemology (being a Ranger, you don't).

I totally forgot about CoK, but yea, I don't have a good way to get them anyways. It might be awhile until my willpower gets maxed, btw, cuz i haven't spent a whole long time harvesting morgia yet, and have eaten a few claw bug corpses, so my will is only about 11. Ill try the potions of exchange once i have maxed though (I have excellent Pe/Ap/Ma scores too...once will gets higher, learning will be my lowest one, so i should be guaranteed an increase.)

Is reading spellbooks all that important to a ranger anyway? Or any non-spellcasting dependent class?

I would figure a ranger would rely on melee, ranged weapons, and wands/potions.

For alignment drop you could pick a bunch of pockets and kill two birds with one stone. :)

Don't you get more skill training at level up with more LE? Also an archer can't use magic? So learn more from books with better LE?

- Yes, good point.
Also an archer can't use magic?
- Sure they can. For any melee class some utility spells can be nice. The real dumb races can still get a spell from a wand/potion of wonder, and finding the corresponding book, and then book-casting it.
So learn more from books with better LE?
- Yes, this is correct.


Question of my own: Does book-casting train learning? You are sorta reading a spellbook...based on experience I'd guess either no or infidesimately little, but mabye not..

Apparently, casting the spell Identify trains Le. So if you have the spellbook keep on casting that.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Question: I've continued playing with this character, and so far i've been successful. 70 days into the game, and I have finished all of the dwarf quests, cleared DF, cleared Pyramid, and did all starting dungeons.

What i have left as possibilities before i go do ToEF are the TotHK and the Gremlin Cave, along with a dive to the Wall of Flames, although i have yet to find an Amulet of Life Saving for Khelly (I'll have to go pool drinking once i have enough piety, or loot to build piety, stored up). Problem is, I feel i'm still way to weak for the ToEF, and won't be ready anytime soon.

I have about 200 hp, 70 pp, limited castings of frost bolt and the ability to book cast it, DV/PV of 66/21 with normal equip on normal tactics atm.
I have required resists. I'm thinking I may try and hoard all the higher metal ammo i have (preferably arrows, as Sun's Messenger was my crowning gift) and attack the ACW like an archer...with a potion of confusion/blindness plus a few high metal ammo (all told, 13 across 4 different stack), I might have a chance...Alertness 100 should help also, if i remember right. I also have 4 PoEH/ 1 PoUH.

I just realized that I don't think I have specifically asked a question yet, so here it is: Am I ready for the ToEF with this character, or should i build more? Certainly planning on doing the TotHK first, but beyond that, not much else to do (except finish up with stat herbs...i could sickness train, but currently my stats are Wi15, Dx26, To25). The main worry for me is my durability.

Well, I'll end this here, as I probably rambled WAY too much above. Advices appreciated =p

I'd do the High Kings dungeon first, for the simple reason that you have no reason not to. You might find extra nice equipment in there, and you're likely gain levels and xp. You should also do DarkForge if you haven't yet - it's always a good testing ground as to whether or not you can survive in the fire temple. Sounds like you have some good stuff and nice tactics. Main problem is lack of an exceedingly good offense weapon. If you find dragon slaying ammo then you're sorted.

How limited are your castings? You might have
enough, if you do things efficiently. Also, how
many fireproof blankets do you have? You don't
want to take your books in there, if you're not
sure of protecting them. There is also the
possibility of getting another frostbolt book
from the druid. Unless that's where you got your
present one. After reading your above post, it
think it probably is.

It might be an option for you to bookcast
frostbolt in the ToEF. You can always exit to
the wilderness to recover your PP's. The
requirements for the 'good book caster' talent
are 'careful', 'potent aura', and 'strong aura'.
I don't imagine you have many of those, as a
ranger, but if you do, it's even more of an
option.

Having Wi at 15 is an invitation to the ACW to
confuse you horribly. The sword of Nonnak, plus
the Water Orb, would help a lot. Even if you don't
wear them all the time, you can put them on if
you need to. Also, a ring of mental stability
wouldn't hurt, if you have one.

I think your PC might be a bit weak for the tower
right now. You would take many corrupting hits,
due to a lack of distance striking ability.
Unless you can make frostbolt work for you, by
means of efficiency or bookcasting.

Consider a dive to the wall of flame, even if it
means killing Khelly. Unless you are going for
an ultra, of course. I wonder how the dwarven
mystic dealt with you, did he give the nice SoCR,
or did you get the lousy potions of training .
If you recieved the SoCR, I would advise that
you kill Khellevaster, and dive deep. That would
give exp. levels, and time to train the WI stat.

Having said all that mess, if you don't mind
taking corrupting melee hits, the ToEF is still
an option. I would advise to save many castings
of frost bolt for the orb level. The ACW himself
is not especially vulnerable to cold, so use the
frostbolts on the demons and elementals.

Before engaging the Wyrm in missile attacks, use
wands, and NON-FROSTBOLT spells, to attack
him through a buffer of fire demons/grues. This
will weaken him a bit, to limit the time you
will have to spend dodging his bolt spells.
With a high alertness skill, and your respectable
HP's, I think you can take him out. Remember,
the Water Orb is always there for emergency healing.

Hmm, ok...after reading this, i realized i forgot to get the Sword of Nonnak! Doh! Would be much better than my current best sword, a 1d7+9 i use to build ranks. The mystic gave me Rolf's Axe, and I already have an eternium spear, so i have at least some decent weps.

Darkforge is done already.
So im thinking ill run back and get Nonnak, to the TotHK, and then try some DF pool drinking to get the AoLS for Khelly. If i don't get a wish shortly, i'll just kill him and move on, diving down as deep as the water temple prolly to get the orb...by then, morgia should have built my Wi to at least 20, I would hope, so combined i would have 35 Wi. I currently lack any confusion resistance (I have none whatsoever), so that would be my only protection. Which reminds me, I need confusion resist for the skeletal king too =(. Sigh...that may mean bookcasting until the entire lake is ice, lol. Btw, what is the skellies confusion range?

Just finished TotHK, took no time whatsoever, although i lost quite a bit of pp, about 30 or so, of my total due to not wanting to wait for it to recharge. I played it safe and gave myself plenty of room to work with, just in case i got confused. As it was, with a Wi of 25 (15 + Nonnak + Amulet) and a RIng of the Clear Mind i found on UC:2 (wow), he never confused me...and i don't really mind losing the pp's, the opportunity cost was so much in favor of speed/caution than letting it fully recover.

Yay for abusing the Ma Stat!

EDIT: continued before quitting for the night, pool drinking, getting a wish and saving khelly, at the cost of intrinsic fire/lightning resists. Tried to convert an altar on Khelly's lvl, and accidently sacced the wrong thing. I had my equip turned to dust =(

Sucks, but i can make it up. Cap is no biggie, the girdle stinks, but i can just start stashing stuff until i get the fire orb, the cloak is easily replaceable, although it was nice, the boots, not so much...that was the part that really hurt.

Ring, the one i just found and was going to use for ToEF =( Bracers, had picked up less than 1 min ago, lol. Spenseweeds i can reharvest, and gauntlets are redundant...

Upon further reflection, only the loss of the boots really hurt THAT much. Luckily a good part of what i had equipped were artifacts.

Anyways, I'm going to bed now.

EDIT: found out i had an even better helm that i had sold, doh, and that waldenbrook had another girdle of carrying...leaving me to weep for the 7LB's that are no longer with me...i guess tomorrow ill go reharvest a bunch of spenseweed while i boost my willpower, before diving down to the water temple. Hopefully, I can get a replacement pair of 7LB's at the casino.

I suggest stepping into the dwarven halls
or the BUGWIL for a few turns, to dip those
brass bracers into a potion of exchange.
That will turn a useless item into a very
nice one. If you get bracers of resistance,
they will likely last you for the rest of
the game. Especially if you smith them, or
invest those scrolls of protection/defense
in them.

There is little need to worry about the
skeletal king confusing you on the 'lake
of death'. If you get confused, just switch
your tactics to coward, and clean your 'E'ars
for a while. That will keep you from
stumbling.

Shame on you for fiddling around with an
alter, without a lonely burb root in your
missile slot : ) The equipment destruction
can be a bummer, but it seems you have some
nice stuff left. The mithril boots will be
safer than the 7LB's in the tower anyway.

I notice that you have bows trained pretty
high, and some decent ammo to go with. Have
you considered killing Kherab for the exp.
points. If the water squares in the DF pool
room are arranged nicely, you can kill him
safely with missiles. You should have enough,
and he should be worth nearly a level.

Three fireproof blankets for the tower.
Hmm, that might be enough to protect your
frostbolt book for the duration, but it
would really suck if it wasn't. I suppose
you could try it, and if one of your blankets
burn away, you could beat a hasty retreat.
I think that limiting your inventory, does
help the blankets to last longer.

Can you believe that in ADOM 1.0.0,
spellcasting out of HP's actually trained
the Mana stat. Oh, those were the days : )

Saving Khelly is great. You now have the
SoCR's and the teleport spell. That should
make the ToEF a lot safer. I advise wearing
the CoS when attempting to read the TP book.
The boost to your LE stat should make things
work a lot better. The temporary dooming
doesn't seem to have a negative effect on
book reading.

I notice that you have no scrolls of
darkness, but you do have one lonely crystal
of darkness. I advise to save it for the Snake.

Sorry for being too lazy to read it all, but why is your willpower only 15? You can get it to 25 without the sickness/starvation training... It would make that frost bolt of yours fly a little further.

Its only 15, because it started out ABYSMALLY low, like 5-6 (seriously), and I've munched a few claw bug corpses throughout the game. I'm working on it right now, so it should be decent by the time i get there. No problem about the reading btw, why should u feel the need if you don't want to?

Bracers comment, I did indeed dip a pair i had sold to Waldenbrook, only got Bracers of Protection from it though =( On Kherab, I have thought about it, for the anvil especially so i can do smithing w/out screwing with Glod, and yes, the pools are aligned properly, as i had to wait for teleportitis to kick in so i wouldn't have to swim in.

The book of teleportation is very useful, and I even got a CLW book recently, which should be useful, I would think.

Well, today's task: Preparations for ToEF! Water Temple/Kherab & Smithing/Harvesting more spenseweed!

Well, did more, probably won't do anything else today. Beat the water temple, fire temple, and killed kherab, will probably go do something smithing before diving down to the casino. Very low of ammunition (stacks of 3 or less suck), but hopefully casino will solve that, along with plenty of other stuff...hoping to find something to grant me invisibility, i only have a few potions at this point. Otherwise, going good!

Sun's Messenger + your dragon slaying ammo will make very easy work of the ACW. And you have some generic slaying ammo too - very nice. Main problem will be the demons and elementals, which can hit hard and don't fall too easy. Spenseweed will help a lot (thoguh obviously not in your tool slot) and be sure to bless your spear. Defensive or normal tactics can also help just to keep your DV high.

Keep training willpower as you go. There's no harm in abusing sickness to train toughness at the same time (just make yourself sick for whilst you eat the herbs and cure yourself straight after). The extra HP can be a nice boon in the tower. Pity about losing the regen bracers and SLBs - no good in the tower of course, but very nice to have in general.
Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse."

Well, dang, I guess I get to roll a new character...first time i've died this stupidly later on...

Decided I would try a little starvation training to give strength a little extra boost, cuz i had just found a great vault of giants. Had a bunch of corpses, and was using stomaceptia to starve and then eat them...well, needless to say, that w/out the fire orb equipped, i was overburdened!, and i let my strength drop a little too far...crushed by tons of luggage! lol.

Should've put on by blessed girdle of carrying =(

The sad part? I think the casino was the next level.

Just thought i'd add, after looking at my FLG, that i must've just gotten that spear of penetration...would've been nice, lol. And that i have NO IDEA where i generated The Glaive "Long Sting", considering i never heard a surge of power...maybe it was in one of the piles of loot from the half of the greater vault i had finished.

Anyways...what character should i try next, i wonder?

Ouch! That is a rough way to go. Defeating the
Snake from beyond, defeating the ACW, recovering
from a ticked off deity, with a vault of giants in
front of you, and the gift shop just ahead. Only
to be killed by luggage! It's deaths like that,
that keep us coming back for more.

As far as what character to do next, I would say
pick a powerful one, for a good shot to get
another win. Since you already have a victory
with a spellcaster, perhaps try an archer. I
think high elven archers are probably the most
powerful. If you want to try melee, maybe an
orcish barbarian.
