Some more info might be handy... What OS are you using and what version of ADOM do you use?

I'm gonna guess you're running Vista, which from what I've heard has some troubles with ADOM. You might be best getting DOSBox and running the DOS version of ADOM through that or the ADOM Sage version.

Heh, never heard of that before. Must be an odd Vista thing - there's a lot more doohicky in it about having admin approval to do simple tasks like install a program. The illusion of security as I see it, since malicious coders will easily find their way round such things.

If it was the adom.prc file you had to remove, it's still all well and fine. Just delete the adom.prc file - it's only there to ensure that no one runs ADOM twice at the same time, and if you exit the program in a way not quite expected, it might still be there.

It could be that you have to be an admin so a program you run may create files - In that case, bein anything but an admin on Vista must suck donkey balls.

I have an unrelated question.
Why the hell do people shorten the word "Please" to "plX"? What the fuck does the "x" add to the word?
It's not a lot of work to write the word "Please", just three more letters. Even "pls" makes more sense then the "plx".

Just a "WTF?!" form a non-native speaker.

I reckon it takes just as much effort to write "please" instead of "plx" as it would to write "from" instead of "form". I swear to God these intermedial sentence-changes will be the death of the english language.

The "from" to "form" is a brain fart, from a lethal (or so the american medical studies say) amount of alcohol.
Shortening please to plx is not.

Well, the distance between the 'x'-key and the 's'-key is not very big. Could perhaps the mistyping of 'pls' also be a "brain fart"?

It's more likely a meme of sorts. Lots of this "txt spk" has gotten about quite alarmingly. Of course before that there was hax0r and all sorts of pain...

I am also running Vista and it works fine other than I cannot play in fullscreen unless I go through DOSbox. Turning off the user account control shuts off all the crazy messages and you can run it without admin.

Im using xp so this may or may not work for vista, but try running the regular dos version. You dont need dosbox to run it (runs just like a regular program), and you can access fullscreen easily by just pressing alt+enter, were as I have yet to find a way to run the winbeta version in fullscreen. Also pressing @ instead of alt+q strikes me as a superior form of accessing the character sheet.

It's exactly the same for me, Narcolepcy, but I've seen XP machines that were strangely unable to run the DOS version at all, and apparently on some it runs, but very unstable. It's all rather strange.

I know the game displays the error message "Could not initialize the game counter" when the amount of characters in adom.cnt is not exactly 4.
