If the ants kill you, it might be a good idea to go and get better weapons. Unless you find something exceptional melee-wise, you should train in missiles, like bows and arrows or crossbows and quarrels if available.

Remember that the VD levels where you do the carpenter quest constantly repopulate with monsters you can kill for xp and loot - and if they don't do that fast enough for you, there's a dungeon to the south called the "Infinite Dungeon" in which the levels are constantly regenerated. Just have some fun in there to buff up your character until he can take on the ants - I recommend that you get at least 8 PV (the second armor rating number) worth of armour (you have elven chain mail, I hope? Then an okay shield and maybe a metal cap, a metal girdle or gauntlets are realistic ways to get there), preferably ten or more, and a good single-handed melee weapon and a shield. Going dual-wielding with a ranger might seem appropriate considering how they're based off the D&D class, but is a bad idea in ADOM because the offensive benefit is usually not worth giving up the defensive advantages of spending less time between attacks and potentially wearing a shield.

Well, if you're named after the band I think I'm going to have to assist you as much as I can, being somewhat of a fan as well :)

Now, on to ADOM. A dark elf ranger has awesome skills, but is kind of weak in the early game. Be sure to train your missile skills also. You should be faster than most monsters with athletics and decent Dx, so run away and pelt them with missiles. You don't have to dual-wield just because it's cool. Make orcish scorchers, hill orcs and all kinds of gnolls chace you and throw a spear/battle axe at you, hope for a good pre/suffix and use that weapon with a shield. Stairhop (just keep going up and down the same stairs) in the ID to find some basic stuff, like a shield, a metal cap and a girdle, maybe metal boots will boost your PV a couple of points.

Lvl 8 isn't too little to head on out to the caverns of chaos on the other side of the map, but you can explore the carpenter or druid quest dungeon fully and explore the ID, not too deep, to boost your char a little before that. Finding the stairs down in the small cave (SMC) and going through that dungeon is good, there's always something interesting there, but the SMC might be hard to get through. Losing a char with xplevel below 10 isn't that big of a deal though, so you could just keep trying(A tip: visit the SMC with a lvl 1 char, get in, read the scrolls, get out, return later. This will generate some weak monsters. The monsters generated there get tougher when your char gains higher xplevel.). Same thing with the puppy cave: just keep trying and you'll eventually make it. Run from the ants and don't fight them if they feel tough, close all doors so they don't get around as much.

If you do decide to venture to the cavers of chaos, just keep going down, but explore every level fully. There's lots of interesting stuff there(well, it's the biggest part of the game actually, 50 levels deep).

Study the herb section in the ADOM guidebook, herbs are very useful to all chars, improving stats and healing hp, poisoning and sicness.

You could also try rolling a trollish healer born in the month of candle, or an orcish barbarian born in candle, or something like that, and just smash everything to pieces in the early game :) That way you'll get to see more of the game, even though they might(not necessarily though) become a bit more tough later on. Practise missile skills with those melee specialists too, as missile weapons with missiles of slaying are probably the most powerful weapons in the game. Dancing around barbarians in the wilderness is a good way to generate lots of ammunition when you're tough enough to survive it.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Sotajumala - only losers stairhop in the ID. Don't start bad habits. :P

You might not want to look into the guidebook J. recommends, because it is VERY spoily. You'll want to explore as much as possible on your own now that you just started. About 90% of ADOM players, I feel, read the Guidebook well before they managed the first win, though, so don't feel too bad about doing it.

J.'s tips are very good though, in all seriousness, though maybe a bit advanced for you - hard for you to judge whether you're tough enough to survive barbarian milking! He's right, however - you will learn a lot by exploring places, even if you die the first time you see them because you're not strong enough. Don't be afraid to start up new characters - I had maybe 5000 dead characters before I scored my first win. You may learn quicker than that ;)
