I feel like I'm missing something. Playing a Troll Barbarian (71 ST/42 TO!) and having trouble finding enough XP to level.

I've completed:
PC, VD, SMC->HMV, CoC 1-40, ToEF, Water/Earth/Air Temple, Pyramid, Darkforge, TotHK, Dwarven Graveyard, etc.

All this, and I'm only L22. What gives? I don't understand how I'm supposed to get from 22 to 50 in what's left of the game?

I'm starting to run into trouble. The Earth Temple was a huge challenge requiring me to retreat ~10 times to Heal which in turn is taking it's toll on the date and my food supplies... but I'm at a loss. Where do I go to beef up? Am I destined to delve down 200 levels into the ID just to scrounge up the XP I need to finish the game?

You definitely won't reach level 50 unless you take drastic measures, but that's not required to win the game. With a troll barbarian featuring this enormous strength and toughness scores, it's especially doable. What kind of troubles did you have with the Earth Temple? It can be really hard if you try and kill the monsters there without a PV-bypassing weapon or something that slays constructs, and if you duke it out in melee with more than one monster at once you can get in trouble.

Since you already did all other locations available except for the Minotaur Maze (Don't go there with a Barbarian), I guess there's not really much you can still do to get XP... Except explore until D:48 and kill everything. But, if you have death ray resistance, confusion resistance, and some means of bashing an archmage's skull in (read: tremendous blow, except if you're a wuss and use humanoid slaying ammo), plus a wand of destruction with at least one charge (plus the wand-destroying one), you can win the game well under level 30 with a troll.

XP (level) is not the most major factor that determines the power of a PC. That would be attributes and equipment.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

What are your other stats? How much HP do you have? Trolls tend to have different power scales compared with other classes, meaning you can't compare a L22 troll with a L22 elf without considering everything else.

I'd personally say go check D40-48 for greater vaults. Avoid any undead ones, and be careful of eq destruction or powerful wyrms in the dragon ones. They tend to be worth a good few levels though. Even lesser vaults can contain high level wyrms worth several million xp. On top of that the odd high level monster like greater molochs and titans can be generated, which will help immensely. Same for the UC. Corruption can be a worry though - you may just want to skip through the levels quickly, only paying attention to special features. You also definitely should kill all the D48 guardians - they're worth some good xp. Other places to gain xp (though not without risk) are the Rift and the BDC. Doing all of these will likely bring you to at least level 30, at which point a troll barbarian can usually take on D50 with some degree of confidence (as long as you have invis to avoid the ghosts).

When killing monsters with high xp gains it can be handy to increase these by making the enemy invis or slowing yourself down (both roughly double the gain). However as a troll barbarian you are unlikely to have this as an option.

A further option is ID-diving, but don't go down to 200. Go to I40/41 and keep hoppinh up and down the stairs till you get the "threatened" message or hear a *THUMB*. Be careful of anything too tough, but there's a decent chance of running into a threat room filled with greater molochs, which can certainly help your level gaining. With some care (and you really *must* be careful) you can kill them all without taking a hit. The biggest worry is one of them equipping a dropped moloch armour. To avoid this lure them out one by one and kick any armour dropped into an unreachable corner.

Best of luck!

Off the top of my head, my stats are:

ST 71 LE 12 WI 14 DE 26 TO 42 CH 1 AP 7 MA 4 PE 14

CH/AP being brutalized by my first corruptions.

Health I believe is @ 424HP.

I guess I'm a little disappointed because I was of the mindset that "There must be so much more of the game left, I'm only level 20!" now it turns out I'm coming to the end.

Yep, once you get the fire orb, it's nearly over.
My favorite way of getting massive free exp.
points is to kill the AKW. He doesn't see invis
(don't bother requesting a GB update on this), so
he's a super-easy kill. All you need is a source
of invis, a wand of magic missiles, and a lot of
booze (from beggars).

You can maximize your exp. point gains by making
*him* invis, and slowing *yourself* before landing
the deathblow. You can use booze to recharge a
wand of wonder, and with enough zaps, you will
gain basic knowledge of the 'slow monster' spell.

If you have access to darkness (via scroll or
zapping a WoW), and a pair of 7LB's, you can
safely kill the casino shopkeeper. Don't pin him
in a corner, or he can fight back. Just keep
chasing him around, hitting as you catch up to
him. When you have him at critical, invis him,
slow yourself, and finish him with humanoid
slaying ammo. If memory serves, zapping him with
a wand of far slaying from a long distance will
keep the whole casino from turning hostile.

I am really busy these days, but I'm still typing
on a troll guide every once in a while. Maybe I'll
have it finished sometime this year : )
Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

For Earth temple - just walking in there and laying every to waste is pretty hard work unless you are seriously seriously uber - its not actually meant to be a cakewalk, and only becomes so if you stick to stairhopping methods of monster filtration (NTTAWWT).

The one time I won with a troll, he entered D50 at level 26 I think it was, cleared everything, and came out again around level 38.

Forget levels. Are you bad-ass enough to win the game? If so, then go do it.
