I just lost a PC to a crushing death. Oddly, it was right after he *picked up* his stuff. I know crushing deaths can happen when you enequip something that gives you extra carrying capacity, or drop your gold while wearing a girdle of greed, etc. However, he had a blessed girdle of carrying equipped, and picked up a bunch of gold, the game asked if I wanted to continue picking up more gold, which implied I was going to come out of it rather encumbered. He picked up the gold, and was crushed. I didn't realize that could happen. Is it a bug, or am I just ignorant?

Yeah I lost a PC like that - asked me if I wanted to continue, I said yeah, and died. I was pretty pissed off. Apparently gold is dangerous *shrug*.

Yeah, happened with me too - a bug with gold I presume. One of the perils of dragon gold-doubling ;)

For all the times I've been Overburdened!, I still haven't died a crushing death. Came close when I had a girdle of greed on and paid for the whole casino stock...

Add me to the list of 'been crushed to death by picking up too much gold'.

ADOM handles burdened status in a funny way sometimes. If you stack ~20 large rations in a pile and try to pick them up, the game will ask something like "how many would you like to pick up? 1 - 14" If you chose 14 you will be overburdened, so why does it give 14 as an option? If that's not bad enough, sometimes even chosing 13 will do it. It's just not intuitive for a PC to be able to pick up so much junk, that they actually imobilize or even kill themselves.

Yeah, shouldn't that only happen to PCs with really low Learning values? Dumb pubescent trolls who think "Hey, I can totally pick up that heap of ten anvils! Ladies, watch this!" ... *-squish-*

Overburdened trains the strength stat a lot, so there may be times when you deliberately want to overburden yourself. Shouldn't you as the player be smart enough to look at your burden levels and calculate how much you're able to carry? :P

> you as the player be smart enough

Perhaps I SHOULD be, but obviously I'm not. I would prefer that an initial pick-up would only allow you to become 'strained!' and another pick-up could allow 'overburdened'.

And I'd like to think that my wizard who knows enough about the workings of the universe to create items from thin air, turn invisible, and teleport, is capable of understanding that picking up a ton of stuff can squish you.

If your character was Scrooge McDuck, picking up huge piles of gold would train his swimming skill.

JADE proposal: Let the character build giant gold vaults to dive into! Bonus points if you introduce the artifact "first 10 copper-piece".
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!
