Damn it man, why would you even need to hesitate? The chances of making it as far as the cat lord are slim. If you get that far then it's just one extra boss to face with the chance of some nice xp. Kill the Carpenter. Its still an act of mercy, only "drawback" being you won't be able to use him to further train your bridge building skill later on. No point throwing away the Kitty Ring this early just because you might have an excess of hatchets and a desire to build le Pont de Normandie across the pond in Terinyo |

Um, no, killing the Carpenter does not count as an act of mercy - never got Healing back in the day when I though I had to kill. But of course, there are alternatives for that one.
