I was wondering whether someone has won the game with every single
class/race combination (not the same person for all of them,
obviously). I made this chart of the wins I know about, gleaned from
the Hall of Fame and from searching rec.games.roguelike.adom for
"YAVP".

Hum Tro HE GE DE Dwa Gno Hur Orc Dra
Archer x x x x x x
Assassin x x x x x
Barbarian x x x x x x x x x
Bard x x x x x x
Beastfighter x x x x x x x x x x
Druid x x x x x x x
Elementalist x x x x x x x x
Farmer x x x x x
Fighter x x x x x x
Healer x x x x x x
Merchant x x x x x x x
Mindcrafter x x x x x x x
Monk x x x x x x x x x x
Necromancer x x x x x x
Paladin x x x x x x x x
Priest x x x x x x x x x x
Ranger x x x x x x
Thief x x x x
Weaponsmith x x x x
Wizard x x x x x x x x x x

If you have won with any combination not marked here, perhaps you could let me know (maybe by email). I'm counting wins from all versions of ADOM, but no savescummed wins please.

More generally, what do people consider to be the most difficult
class/race combination? My tentative guess was Hurthling Barbarian
(not much magical ability, and not much strength either), but somebody
has won with one, so perhaps they're not the hardest. Though I'm not
quite a newbie anymore (I won with a Drakish Wizard!), there are still
many combinations that I've never tried.

Actually I have finished ADOM with Dwarvish Monk and Human Necromancer which seem to be missing from your list. Both were ordinary wins and I was playing g16p2 back then. And from the same version I had High Elven Fighter who won the game. Maybe I could post my ADOM hiscore file to you if you want.

Hurthling Mindcrafters aren't that great either, and Dark Elven Thieves are so fragile that it's almost impossible to keep them alive.

Human Bards seem quite hard to keep alive in the beginning game - I just started a Grey Elf one and it's far easier.

Thanks Akron, I've added Dwarvish Monk, Human Necromancer and High Elven Fighter to the chart, and I'll keep editing it to add new ones as people mention them. Yes, please email me your high score list - it sounds as if you've won with lots of obscure combinations.

That chart is interesting. Someone won as a trollish wizard? I'll have to try that soon. And a gray elven barbarian? That's just weird. I'm surprised no one has won as a hurthling assassin. They're known for dexterity and archery. A lot of people have played drakelings. I think that's the one race I haven't tried yet. What are they like?

I get the impression that high elven and gray elven barbarians are reasonably popular because they have Literacy from the beginning (unlike barbarians of other races).

I like drakelings - in fact my only victory so far was as a Drakish Wizard. They have decent Strength, better Toughness than any race except trolls, and the Alertness, Food Preservation and Swimming skills, which are all nice. I've heard that they have a bad time in the ToEF, but I wore a ring of regeneration in there and only ended up needing one blessed potion of ultra healing.

next tiem i play i'm gonna try a hurthling priest, seeing as there aren't ne wins w/ it. any bets on how long it'll be before i die? 1 game day? 2? 3? maybe a whole game month? *g* i'm notorious for dieing early, but when i survive early i usually get pretty far until i decide to play late at night and get whacked doing something stupid (i.e. trying to run away from a troll cheif *before* putting my various invisibility stuff on, or not grabbing enough food b/c i think i can survive off corpses... then realizing i dont' have food pres. AFTER i've gone 4-5 levels, and deciding that i'll go ahead anyways).

high elf priests, in my opinion, are the easiest class/race... (i've won twice using them - once in g16 and v1)

Surprising to see tha no ones won with a HE druid or elementalist.
Theyre quite easy in the early game.

my second victory in v1 was a male human mindcrafter, i think i have the .flg somewhere...

i guess this is

Spoiler
mindcrafters actually get quite powerful after lvl ~25. the minotaur mazes and the blue dragon caves have never been so easy... you have to love those confusion thingies, especially with a high Wi score.. regeneration and mind shield (or wahtever it was) are extremely handy too.

But mindcrafters are rather difficult in the early game.

Not TOO hard--just keep your PP high enough so you can fire confusion bolts at things you don't want to deal with, and keep a few wands around for those pesky undead/unlife. I've got a Dwarven Mindcrafter, lvl 16, already killed Rehetep (remember those wands!) and doing great!

How can I make that spoiler thing so that I can post spoily information without anyone getting spoiled if they don't want to? eg. How can I make that black box?

Anyway, this isn't too spoily. Actually I realized that there are some mindcraft abilities which work on undead/unlife&corrupting creatures without any backfire. You can find them out by reading the Mindcraft section from the help file.
Good early game strategy is to switch tactics to Berserk and cast confusion bolts on enemies, and them whack them while they are confused.

If you click on the word "help", in the "Read the formating help" message that's located right next to the text field used to type messages, you can find out about the [ SPOILER][ /SPOILER] tags and all the other text formating features ;)

Hope that helps.

I just won with a High Elven Druid (now added to the chart). I'm surprised Druids aren't more popular - it's much easier for them not to kill a single cat with most cats being friendly. (OK, I lost the Ring of the Master Cat after an emperor lich summoned a hostile cat against me.)

bards are better for cats: charm any hostile cat you find into an ally, then have it kill the stupid emp. lich that summoned it *g*.
i don't like druids myself. just to... i dunno... their kinda hard in the beggining when lots of your XP comes from animals. i dunno, i just don't really like spellcasters very much myself, and clerical spellcasters least of all.

You can add a dwarven archer to your chart. I won the game with that combination. However, my luck ran out when I was on my way out of CoC. I was chaotic and fixing some holy potions on an altar while a ghost lord came through the wall next to me and instantly sacrificed me to its gods.

Hmmm, I didn't think wins usually counted if you got killed on your way out. But thanks for the warning - I didn't know ghosts were among the monsters who could sacrifice you.

The death message was something like "... was sacrificed by a ghost lord to its gods (after winning)" so I believe that it was a win, although not a very satisfying one.

OK, I've added Dwarven Archer to the chart, since no-one else seems to feel that you have to survive in order to win.
