My promising young Dark elf paladin just got toasted; so I've come here to whine and complain, and ask stupid questions (this happend in the CoC). Is this rare? (the encounter, not how bad I am at the game). Whats going on here?

You must have run into a "Surge of Power". This message is generated the first time you enter any given level, and is quite rare. I actually call that lucky.

This means that a guarded artifact was generated when you entered the level. The guardian this time happened to to be a barbarian, he was randomly generated a name. And yes, the guardians are quite a bit harder than their normal counterparts

Did you see what artifact he was guarding? Pity if it was the Black Book.

The black tome is quite useful if you read it before you get your corruption cured by the white unicorn.

Thanks. I did get the "surge of power message", but I couldn't see what artifact it was.

Hell, I've been sooo goddamn lucky then last week..
Firstly, I got the black tome, but the character died.

Secondly, with another character, I got one surge of power-message on puppy cave the second last level there. He was guarding the rune-covered club, and was somewhat easy to beat the guardian. It was a griffon.

hmm, I just picked up the rune-covered club in my current game and it was a griffon also. Maby these are hard-coded into adom. What was his name btw? if it's in the puppy cave then I suppose you'll be training in clubs?

I got a "Surge in Power" there before in the puppy cave and the guardian was a choas rat(easily taken out with my drakeling breath). The artifact was a scorched spear. However, I also had a "Surge in Power" message that the guardian was a Hill Orc. I guess these guardians are random.

yes, they're random. Guardians, artifacts, the level the artifact was generated on, and guardian names are all random..

Random must hate me. I've not once in my lifetime found a Surge of Power.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Surges are indeed VERY rare. During all the years I've been playing ADOM I've maybe had some 10 surges tops. Even WoWi's are more common (then again, they can be found by scumming some place unlike surges). One funny case was when I got a named karmic lizard while playing a bard...

Just a point of interest.

Surges of Power cannot happen in the Infinite Dungeon. Just like Pools, Merchant Shops, Royal vaults and the like

I meant for a single artifact. Like will the guardian for the rune-covered club always be a griffon? or will the scorched-spear guardian always be a chaos rat?

As with my previous post I had once a choas rat and once for a Hill Orc for the Scorched spear. Seems like that the guardian generated for a certain artifact will be random.

My dark elven elementalist recently got Long Sting from Mur-Amanoch the gargoyle (cool name!). Best character I've had in ages, he sadly got killed today by a server failure at level 20...

I've GOT to stop playing Adom at work!
You know you've played too much ADOM when you try to throw coins at people wearing similar clothes as yourself.

Sorry for posting in such an old thread, but a character I just made ran into another surge of power message. The character is a level 2 female high-elven archer (randomly generated, I don't usually play female characters), and is in the third level of the CoC. Should I try to kill the guardian, or come back later?

Nevermind. I killed a named black wizard and got an emerald dagger called "Serpent's Bite", that I really, really hope is an artifact.

It is. You're lucky you got such an easy guardian to kill with an archer... and even luckier it didn't try and summon.

Having an animal artifact guardian and a bard PC is quite nice as one can just tame the guardian with music and take the artifact without resistance. At least once that happened to me (bard PC, karmic lizard artifact guardian).

lol, you already said that in your above post real j. :P.

serpent bite is a really good artifact. human slayer, posion, and extra chance to score critical hits, and you could also throw it, because your an archer your extra good at that, if you meet a strong humanoid, like some of the temple guardians.

Perfect melee weapon for an archer, if you ask me. Poison and humanoid slaying are powerful assets, and daggers are the perfect weapon class to train for archers anyway. (unless you are in the possession of a masterwork eternium two-handed sword of penetration or something and don't need phase daggers for the high-PV-baddies.)

Don't throw stuff that you won't get back, it's almost never worth it. Most of the time, you just miss and that's it.

I dont see why the dagger class is especially good for archers, why would an archers do any better with a dagger then a fighter, priest or barbarian would, for example?

And I agree that maybe you shouldn't throw it unless you can miss it for a while, but you'll always get it back in the end, so it might be worth it.

For archers, as for spellcasters, spear + shield is the best option. Whip + shield also works well for DV if you have the patience to train it up - only problem is that all whips burn.
