As part of testing for merchant's guide i decided to give a try for merchant gold coin challenge.

Race choice – hurthling – faster levelling+archery, good Dx at start.

died to accidental stair kicking while using ants for Gemology.

Will be restarted at spare time.

Hahaha! I'm doing a little challenge with merchants at the moment myself - one to get max precrownings (no reason to use merchants other than slightly faster ascendency to level 50, but I'm hooked on using gnomish merchants now). They're so damned weak, I can't understand how anyone could get far with Fling the Bling. Best of luck - but you'll be kicking yourself when you find an eternium spear of devastation.

I am also doing the fling the bling challenge.
I got screwed four times already.

1. Very nice mithril flail in black market. Very
reasonably priced too, just a few hundred.
2. No morgia or moss in the big room.
3. Mithril warhammer of devastation in Waldenbrook's.
4. Hill giant as a quest monster.

But I did get a surge of power on D:12. Killed a
named slow shadow and got Preserver. So that
makes up for it I guess.

Fling the bling doesn't seem to be too difficult
so far. I am using a gray elf. I first checked
out the black market, then got four exp. levels
in the ID. The exp. levels plus the 'good shot'
and 'keen shot' talents got my coin throw damage
to 1d2+14. So next I used a water shield and
killed the old barbarian for the exp. points, that
gave even more damage. The 'far shot' talent did
nothing for the coin toss distance, but reaching
exp. level ten did.

I next killed Hotz and crew with a combination of
litter bugging the town with gold pieces, and
running like a scared rabbit. I killed Yergius
too, for the market discount. Picked up a few
points of PV that way, and then went to Munxip's
to train strength. I'm not even trying for
limited turns on this one!

Next stop was the CoC, and I'm currently kind of
stuck due to a hard quest monster.

I have a quick question though.
Before I found two shields to wield, I actually
did have a weapon equipped, in my right hand slot.
When traveling around corners, I bumped into 2
monsters. I didn't kill either one, but it did
give a single skill mark, to my hammers and flails
skills respectively. Do you think that would
disqualify this character from the challenge?

Doesn't disqualify you, since you can easily explain it and it gave you no advantage. I'm surprised you're having such a good time - may have to give it a shot myself at some point. I'd probably try it with a gnome for the lesser xp requirements and ventriloquism.

Starting scum – Raven born specialized in potions.

Lv1 talents – Alert (opens Treassure hunter, Missile weapon master), Good Shot, Keen Shot (+3 to gold coin damage overall)

Starting stats – St-7, Le-16, Wi-14, Dx-21, To-15, Ch-16, Ap-11, Ma-7, Pe-16
Starting potions – 2xwater, 2xcure poison, 2xcarrot juice, potential learning, 2xoil of rust removing, 2xhealing
Starting ring – protection+4 (that is almost cheating)
Gold coin damage – 1d2+12 on Berserk.

Terinyo – get puppy quest, get carpenter quest, pile things in food shop (look out for seeds), trade carrot juice for swimming

Bandit village – since I am not going for ultra, first kill should not be done here. Get crime lords quest, check shop (find studded leather armor have to sell pot of potential learning to afford it), pile of extra stuff (like water in master thieves building). End result – 7 points of PV.

Small cave – make a first kill orc. Get tower shield in 5 turns. Lv2 – Archery/Detect item status/Detect items status/Gemology.
Lv3-Archery/Archery/Alchemy/Gemology, talent – Misser.
Found a neutral altar.
Get lv4- still seen only two rooms. Skills – Alchemy/gemology/Swimming/Detect item status
Get a blink dog, start running for stairs out of here, than remember char is lawful.
Lose tinderbox and half hit points due to exploding door.
Lv5-Archery/Archery (I am soaking each possible point into this)/Alchemy/Detect item status
Get blanket, get wild cat on my back.
Lv6-Archery/Gemology/Swimming/Food preservation – talent —TH.

Village dungeon – lv7—Archery/Alchemy/Gemology/Herbalism
Vd5-get a blinkie – name it- throw coin at it on coward, wait for summons, get corpse on third dog.
Lv8-Archery/Alchemy/Gemology/Gardening (well, both detect item and gardening are risky investments if I will find altar and herbs these will be a waste)
Go back to sell extra blink dog corpses. Somewhere between picking pockets and slaying yellow dogs char becomes neutral.
Vd7- I decide to go for it. Lv9- Archery/Gemology/Alchemy/Herbalism, talent –
Affinity to boomerangs (no, I am not seriously drunk, I just want to reach missile weapon master asap).
Save carpenter, get bridge building, kill Jharod.
Check prices and find +3 boots. For non hurthling that would be great. Get into thief guild. Get healing via stat drain.

Puppy cave – bypass ants, Vd3-pool. On VD3 my merchant manages to finish of ogre magus and hit lv10- Alchemy/Gemology/Herbalism/Swimming.
Vd4-tension room of goblins.
Pc4- neutral altar suck cooked goblins from tension room and some live mobs to get luck.
PC5-river.
Lv11-Archery/3xGemology
After some swimming reach VD6- found adamantium tower shield. Later found cute dog corpse and medium adamantium shield. Attack mixed vault – get acid resistance via ankheg corpse.
Lv12-Archery/Alchemy/Gemology/Gardening, talent –affinity to thrown axes
Meet werewolf lord and decide I had enough of this place.

Bandit village again – get Detect traps, get some keys from ratling, return to Terinyo to get quest and start attacking crime lord. First bouncer takes six gold coins (and some bleeding wounds), ratling goes in four and crime lord runs away like sissy coward. But I found him in the corner and finish off. Get marble amulet, buy some large rations and move to using ants+gemology.

to be continued.

In general as far as i know problems start appearing somwhere bellow dwarftown. 2 things: your level ups do not provide enough damage (but double rings of slaying and wish for find weakness might do the job.) and you don't get discount on attack energy.

before you try -- strong thrower doesn't help either.

Strength makes little difference to missile damage, so ring of weakness wouldn't be that useful unless you plan to use potions of exchange to swap it into the Dex stat. Should I make the laughable suggestion to try getting bug corpses? :P Sounds good so far though - can't imagine being able to kill an ogre magus with gold coins. Hopefully you can get precrowned with BoW...

Does Fling the Bling allow spells from wands? You could gather up some booze and reload a bolt spell wand to kill some greater claw bugs. A single corpse gives three dex, that's already a lot.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

I think Soirana meant the find weakness skill, not
a ring of weakness.

> Should I make the laughable suggestion to try

I wouldn't want to eat the bug corpses. I think
having speed and dexterity that high would kind
of break the game for me. And besides, they would
slay me if I tried!

Silfir:
> Does Fling the Bling allow spells from wands?

I don't have the foggiest idea about what is
allowed. Personally, I am not inficting damage
on anything, in any way, other than coin throwing.
I will use wands of teleport, stunning, webbing,
paralyzation, and other kinds like that, but not
offensive wands like acid, fire, poison, and so
on.

I am also playing with following restrictions:
No saving, no praying, no more ID visits (only
used for a few exp. levels to start), no pick
pocketing, or gremlin exploiting, and no casino
gold. I will however, use herbs plus sickness,
but not to a rediculous extent.

Currrently my character has reached exp. level 15.
He has completed the Griffyard, and is about to
teleport raid Darkforge before taking on the
pyramid. I have found (made) some morgia and
moss, and have trained stats a bit. Toughness
is currently at only 18 though, so if a steel
golem gets a lucky critical on me... it's over.

EDIT: I can no longer monitor the missile damage
for coin throwing. The character info display
shows only carrying cappacity and kick damage.
Is this normal? I have no melee damage because
of double shields, but equipping a weapon still
does not allow missile damage to be shown.
Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong!

Darren: my merchant has already disposed two ogre magi. Not without problems, but she lives to tell the story.

Silfir: allowing wands would be to easy. In general i suppose attack wands are not allowded (except for freezing water) but ones like stun and paralyzation are very wellcome.

Gut: I am surprised you noticed this only now:) reading blessed ID should help. In general that is coused by some trickery around coins having/not having b/u/c status.

I've had the same trouble with missile display for coin-throwing - didn't realise ID scrolls could help. Be careful of getting your inventory cursed with gold coins in the missile slot. Can lead to... problems...

And I agree about wands - for utility purposes only. The point of Fling the Bling is that coins are your only method of direct offence. That's why it's so bloody hard. gut, you're insane for taking on extra restrictions on top of this. No gremlin-scumming understandable, but no praying or pickpocketing at all?

Also, no smithing, piety abuse, or dragon gold
doubling (forgot those). Character is finished
with all dwarf quests, and pyramid is done. Were
this a wizard, I would kill Khelly and get on
with the game. As things are, I find myself too
cowardly. I will do the puppy cave, SMC/UD, then
TotHK. If I find an AoLS on the way, great. If
not the sage dies.

I do need some chaos resistance though, because
the dwarven mystic jipped me, he just gave a
couple of training potions and a PoGA. I was N+
when chatting with him, it usually works well
with my wizards and druids, but I suppose
merchants are different. Or maybe I just got
unlucky.

The turn counter stands at 39625. The toughest
monsters I have fought so far have been a troll
king (much PV and healing), and a quickling lord.
The quickling lord was by far the worst. He was
healing so fast, I couldn't keep him hurt. I had
to finally drag him to a set of stairs. When he
would start making me bleed too bad, I descended,
healed, and came back. Since he couldn't heal,
while I was off the level, I finally got him.
After that, I certainly don't look forward to
quickling royalty. YIKES!

Nonnak came the closest to killing me so far. A
lucky critical, and I was waaay down. I think
the lucky/fate smiles intrinsics may have saved
me.

About the ID scroll. I read one right after
raiding Darkforge, and I still can't see my
missile damage. Oh well, I guess it doesn't
matter whether I can see it or not. It is taking
a lot of hits to kill things though. I think I
will raise the dexterity stat pretty high. I
didn't originally plan to, but I started thinking
about corruptions. Once they start draining my
dexterity, I will be without ANY offense.

Looks like i will need ID dive to get some water, to get enough stoma for further precrownings.

my second precrown was Robes of resistance, at least i can use them. i messed with third one. Either miscalculation or missed artifact, but i didn't have the balls to collect 400+ stoma again and was out of repair scrolls. And it could have been just black tome.

I love the fling da bling challenge, but never made it to the pyramid with one yet... Hurthling has to be good choice I reckon...

You can always wield gold pieces before you find shields - they do cause some damage, but to me it feels like its still in the spirit of the game, as long as it doesn't happen too often.

I reckon for the AKW you will 'just' need huge amounts of skill, a lot of paralysis charges and beserk flinging, but I really don't see how its going to be possible to take down the Ancient Stone Beast that way, even with find weakness.

well, i've done dwarven quests moving to lv18 which brought a surprise: char has keen shot, alert and three wasted affinities (boomerangs, thrown axes, thrown spears) but cannot take Missile weapon master.
WTF? i was counting for extra 3 points of damage and had to witch to quick shot line which means 3 wasted talents. Anybody got any ideas which i could test out?

also very bad news - i've just killed the cat. of course that ring has description to help only for melee criticals, but Dx bonus could have been insane.

Edit: i just realized i made first precrown on live sacs that is >50 killed not via gold coins for profit of char. So i am in "Q"uiting way.
Damn that looked good.

Edit2: retested - apears affinity to boomerangs and scurgaries doesn't count towards missile weapon master.

If my character doesn't have enough damage with
coins, to hurt the stone elementals, I suppose
I could just lead them to other dungeon levels
and leave them there. The Ancient Stone Beast
on the other hand, I will have to kill. Perhaps
if i find a level with a river, I could use that
as a barrier? Can the ASB swim?

As for the ACW, I just don't know. I have the
alchemy skill, and my recipe for potion of
blindness is pepper petal and booze. Seems kind
of like a waste of a potion of booze, but I may
have to rely on that. Problem is, I think the
ACW can still heal himself while blind.

Regarding the saccing issue. I sacced the greater
deamon in dwarftown. I did it out of force of
habit I suppose. The funny thing is, I didn't
even catch it, until reading your post. I got Big
Punch, and sacced it. I had already sacced about
80,000 gold, and so was already at 'extremely
close' status. Saccing the artifact didn't make
much of a difference, but technically I did get
something from it. I haven't gotten pre or normal
crowned yet.

I will still keep playing though. I figure, as
long as things are documented honestly, it's ok.

The only way I can see of killing the ASB is by pacifying the level above, creating a long corridor, and then keep hitting him with coins from a distance and teleporting to the other end of the corridor when he comes near. Go up the stairs when you need to eat... Boost dex potions might be handy, though you still might not be able to hurt it faster than it regenerates (assuming you can hurt it at all - it's got 60 PV). It may be best to conquer some of the levels below and leave him to later.

Theoretically how high can bling damage go up to?

lv50 char (actually revamped Ireth Oronar) with two rings of slaying (2x+6 to missile damage), all talents (including Natural Berserk whetheter it helps or not) and Dx at 71 (couldnot boost further) pulled 1d2+77 on Berserk with Tactics at 100.
That was without archery bonus and Eagle Eye hurthling can get.

It is hard to believe but she was wielding rune-covered trident (polearms at lv12) with St at 44 and mellee damage was 3d12+75 (to hit was 136 and 157).

Technically with boosted speed (iirc, mobs do regenerate only on their turn, so if you have 5 moves to his one due too speed boost regeneration becomes 5 times less effective) and paralyzed beast it should be doable. I still would recommend having Find Weakness skill at 100.
And do not forget things like cats ring or bracers of war do not increase criticals for missiles.

The only problem is chance to get surounded by elementals and grues on the way into temple. Once again speed, multiple means of monster detection are recommended. Having Courage wouldn't hurt either if things go wrong.

Another problem how Blinger gets to lv50, if it is wise to avoid certain monsters?

I have decided to just keep playing the
PC I have. I don't really care if it is
considered an 'official' victory. I'm
still having fun with this guy, even
with the mistake.

I just got the RotHK and it wasn't easy.
The dungeon levels weren't difficult, but
the skeletal king was very difficult. I
first tried the normal 'cross the bridge
and fight' tactic, but was unable to
inflict much damage. My dexterity was at
40, and exp. level at 17. I don't know
what my missile damage was, because I
still can't read it.

After flinging gold at him for a while,
he started getting a few lucky criticals
in. My HP went to about 50, and I decided
to get out of there. I crossed the bridge,
picked up my stuff, and went to lick my
wounds. I noticed, on the way out, the
ring just sitting there. So after healing,
I lead the SK out of the level, returned
and got the ring. Now I had an extra
source of fire resistance, and a few more
points of PV and DV to help me out.

I still wanted to kill the king, so to
speak. More of a test really, to help
prepare me for some of the fights ahead.
I decided to fight the SK outside of his
own level. This turned out to be a bit of
a mistake. I was happily throwing coins,
and he was standing a pace away, sending
(now useless) glowing balls of fire at
me. I had set aside my shields, and was
wielding the Rune Covered Trident, for
the dexterity boost. Then he did something
I had never seen him do before. He summoned
a bunch of skeletal warriors.

It took a long time to deal with all the
warriors he KEPT summoning. They actually
weren't too difficult though, and come to
think of it, they probably helped train my
shield skill a lot. But still, I just
wasn't expecting that. Once I got them
cleared out, I finished the SK in his own
level. He did not summon in there. I don't
know that he CAN'T, I just know that he
didn't.

Now I'm off to kill Khelly. I REALLY hate
to do this, but I didn't stumble upon an
AoLS, and I am unwilling to hunt for one.
I may come to regret this later, but I
figure if worse comes to worse I can use
the unicorn.

EDIT:

I finally remembered to check my missile damage,
right after reading a blessed scroll of identify.
Missile damage with tactics on berserk (+51, 1d2+33).
Base range is 4.

I found a scroll shop on D:18. I bought it out once,
and will only buy it out again if it restocks in the
natural coarse of the game. The great news is that
it had a scroll of education in it. After buying it,
I checked it in my inventory, and realized that I had
another one in there that had been unidentified. I
read them both (uncursed) and recieved cooking and
archery. VERY glad to get archery.

On D:19 a threat room full of dark elven priestesses,
I started to pass them by. Then remembered how badly
I needed the exp. points, so went ahead and fought
them. The result is that I have now created somewhat
uber-tarantulas and other spiders. It did turn out
to be MORE than worth it however, as I netted two
potions of cure corruption, and most importantly, a
RoDS. I almost immidiately used it for the 'find
weakness' skill, but then I thought about how hard
D:50 would be. If I don't have a wand of destruction,
I don't see how I can beat it. I know the casino
MIGHT generate a WoD, but I can't count on that.

I would like to have 'find weakness' as soon as I
can get it, for training purposes. I just realized
the 'tactics' skill isn't training, no matter how
many coins I throw. I'm begining to think that 28
is as high as it is going to go. So I need to ask,
does anyone have any suggestions for this wish? I
am leaving the game for tonight, and will pick it
up again tommorow.

I'd recommend thinking short term. You have no guarantee of ever making it near D50 - think of the other troubles you'll have before then. Find Weakness is probably very worth the wish. You'll just have to hope you find a WoD elsewhere (you could always keep force restocking the casino till you get it, or maybe get another RoDS with a bit of luck).

I'd say wish for find weakness.

wand of destruction does affect nearby monsters causing damage, so it is not very in the spirit of challenge. I'd recommend wand of door creation ending. That is best option for d50, IMO.

I love finding a wish just a few floors below Dead Khelevaster <grr>...

I agree with Darren and Soirana, Find Weakness sounds like your only sensible wish at the moment, as the two orb guardians who need not be named are going to be a severe pain in the ass...

I think wand of destruction is fair game as long as no monsters are around, right?
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

Sure, but if no monsters are around, you don't need the wand at all.

Point being, satisfying the condition "no monsters around" is likely to be difficult with coin alone.

teleport could help, but, iirc, balors are resistant to teleportation.

Its ages since I was in a position to fire a WandDes, whats the range on those babies anyway? I vaguely remember being pretty impressed by them.
