Is there something written down somewhere that says what items can be found on which levels? Here's my problem. I got my first player ever to the Casino yesterday, but I won a bunch of money and the staircase down was blocked by a guard. I've got no means of teleporting him, and no such wands in any store. My instinct is to scum ID levels 7-9 until I find a wand of teleportation, but can one even be found there or do I need to head lower? |

> Is there something written down somewhere that > says what items can be found on which levels? If you search google groups, you can find some postings about items and their danger levels. I think that much of that info was from code diving though. > I got my first player ever to the Casino > yesterday, but I won a bunch of money and the > staircase down was blocked by a guard. He wants you to spend all your winnings (and then some) at the gift shop. You might try potions of blindness/confusion, the ventriliquism skill, or darkness/invisibility. These will probably result in a hostile casino though. The above ideas seem a lot safer. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

I searched the shop and couldn't find a wand. In retrospect I should have searched there before winning a bunch of stuff. I knew what was going to happen after I won, so I don't know why I didn't plan ahead. They had Executor in there for 24,000,000 (which is useless to me because I'm a monk) but no wand... go figure. Sounds like the easist route is to hit the assassins cave. I'll do that. But I will check out those groups, too. Thanks! If you become invisible before the guard that sits on the stairs sees you, he won't move to the stairs and you can go right down. No hostility later either as long as he doesn't see you. I've never tested him seeing you later. |

If you pickup all the items and pile in a place, and play in casino, the shopkeeper like other shopkeepers generates more stuff. You can try that if you want. |

Hey, monks don't get any penalties for weapons! You can use that executor mighty fine. Might be useful with it's slaying abilities and all. Just go beat up some gremlins in the cave and get that skill up to 8 or 9 at least. If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away. The guidebook indicates monks do get penalties. In the 'Weapon skills' section. "Monks - Monks also receive penalties for using weapons, albeit not as severe as Beastfighters, and so should specialize in Unarmed Combat." I haven't played monks in a while though, so I can't say how severe the penalties are. They may be minimal, and more than made up for by a weapon like Executor. I've never owned Executor before, but I hear it's rather nice. I'll at least consider it. Since I can't pick up 24,000,000 gold anyway, I'll have to steal it and make the casino hostile, so at least I wouldn't need to worry about the guard on the stairs after that. I'm a Champion of Balance though.. what worries me is that I'll not only be cursed and doomed, but stealing an artifact and hacking down a bunch of casino patrons and guards might make me chaotic. Two of my top ten high score characters were killed by Waldenbrook... So at this point I'm pretty nervous about stealing from the casino. :) Aragorn, I did put the stuff I liked in a pile next to the shopkeeper, but wouldn't the tactic of stacking everything and generating new items get me pretty corrupted? It's on D:31 after all. [Edited 1 time, last edit on 4/2/2008 at 16:06 (GMT -5) by Worst Player... ever] |

You don't have a girdle of greed? Bless one, wear it and pick up any amount of gold. A pessimist sees a dark tunnel. An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel. A realist sees a train. And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks. |

Really? How does that work? I just ran and bought a girdle of greed and blessed it, and the gold I'm carrying (29,000), still has weight, even when I dropped it and picked it up again. |

Good start, now just find more gold to pick up. Your carrying capacity increases along with the amount of gold you carry. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

Picking up everything in the casino takes a lot of turns. I think he was talking about that. You drop the golden ball. You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west. Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?" Which direction? (123456789) 4 Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated. You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd! |

"Picking up everything in the casino takes a lot of turns. I think he was talking about that." Yeah, that's what I was referring to. The girdle of greed thing is a huge help - I never noticed that before! And that list is nuts... it should pretty much take care of me from here on out. At least as far as finding items is concerned. :-\ |

>Picking up everything in the casino takes a lot of >turns. I think he was talking about that. I disagree. It only takes a bit more than twice as many turns as walking through the Gift Shop the first time and makes it much easier to ID and pick out what you want. Making sure you get everything worthwhile from the Gift Shop is well worth the few extra points of corruption. [Edited 1 time, last edit on 4/3/2008 at 14:51 (GMT -5) by EmptyOne] |

Picking everything up in the gift shop takes no extra turns. Upon entering the casino level, one should set the Auto_Pickup command to everything. Like this: := Auto_Pickup = !$%*()[]\'"?/{ It takes a few seconds to type it out, but it's worth it. After you are finished, you can reset Auto_Pickup back to just $, like it should be : ) Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

After casino shop there's no need to auto pick up gold either. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, mumbles: "I'd offer 9 gold pieces for yer dwarven child corpse." |

gut, is autopickup faster than normal picking up? What about if you are running away from monsters, and you walk over something and you char picks it up, it doesn't slow you down? Also about monks using weapons: I really think there is no penalty, it's just that people think "well, this seems logical" and so it got into the guidebook. At least the DV bonus monks get, 2/3*level, is the same using weapons and unarmed. Also, and I know this isn't a thorough investigation, monks and wizards who start with staves seem to have the same +to-hit and +dmg. If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away. I thought auto-pickup took extra turns too. Or maybe it does in other rogue-likes. I know it's gotten me killed before, but maybe not in ADOM. I'm pretty sure is a DV penalty (or no bonus) when a Monk wields a melee weapon, but it is worthwhile to train them. |

About girdle of greed. It changes the weight you can carry based on amount of gold in inventory. For example, if you bless a girdle of greed and scum 5 billion gold by black dragons or casino. You will have insane amounts of carry weight. Si vis pacem, para bellum |

That are filled with gold exclusively, unless you have any of the Porter talents. Also, I wish an annihilator on your hide if you exploit this oversight :) You drop the golden ball. As it turned out, Executor was only 2.4 million gold, not 24 million. But I had already taken the 24 million from the casino so boy, was my face red :) I trained Axes up to level 7, and I'm not noticing a real dropoff using Executor. Anything humanoid is pretty much dead. Plus now I get to use an eternium tower shield, so it more than balances out any DV penalty. I've killed the cat lord and I'm right above the Air Temple now. My speed is 155, I've got 7lb, and I'm a level 19 monk (Troll). I've got 4 SoCR's and 1 PoCC, with 3 corruptions. The only things that scare me from here on out are whatever gets summoned in the Air/Mana temples, and D:50 itself. I can run away from everything else. I was gonna do the rift for some more SoCR's, but I don't think I'll need them. |

J.: > gut, is autopickup faster than normal picking up? > What about if you are running away from monsters, > and you walk over something and you char picks it > up, it doesn't slow you down? You would think so wouldn't you! I know I certainly did for about a decade. As it turns out, in ADOM, Auto_Pickup basically gives you a free turn. The funny thing is, that I never tried this amazing function, until I just recently gave Dungeon Crawl a shot. That game has some auto-pickup items set by default, and I came to like it. So I tried it in ADOM, and was surprised to see what a big advantage it gives. Instead of step, pickup, step, pickup, taking up four game turns. You can set the Auto_Pickup variable (which doesn't even take up one game turn) and get step pickup, step pickup, taking only two game turns. As an obsessive turn-counter, this blew my mind. ALL THE WASTED TURNS !!! No seriously, I don't actually use it for every item I see. That might be beneficial, but it would be too much trouble, and boring to boot. I mainly just use it for gold. I will change it for the casino, and when in the ID, looking for blink dogs. When stair climbing, it's easy for thousands of game turns to be eaten up, while checking out those tempting items only a few steps away : ) There is one other really nice use for it, mining. I don't do a lot of that, but once in a while I will. When you smash a wall (or have an ant do that for you), you generate rocks, ore, and gems (hopefully). These are nice, but irritating if all on one square: step, press the ',' key, press 'a', spacebar, 'a', spacebar, 'a' spacebar. Having to do this continually is one of the reason I hate the smithing process. With Auto_Pickup though, just set o (for rocks) * (for gems) and ] (for tools) and it's much more pleasant. I even tried to leave the function set all the time, to pickup things like potions, scrolls and other nice items. I couldn't let it stay on though, it caused too much interference with trying to stash items. Also, trying to deal with shops got to be a real pain, with heavy use of Auto_Pickup. Just setting it to gold isn't a bother though. Darren: > My point was more that after the casino there's no > need to spend money. After the casino I'm cursed! I need that gold for bribing dieties : ) Well, actually not anymore, after catching on to the ventriliquism thing (btw thanks). Still, it's rare for me to have scrounged up enough gold for a crowning, before the casino. If not using casino gold, I do still need to collect gold drops (and hope for deep CoC alters), for a crowning. Else I have to go without. I admit freely though, my games are not 'normal'. Worst Player... ever: > My speed is 155, I've got 7lb, and I'm a level 19 > monk (Troll). Wow! Are you ever going to have leveling problems : ) Trolls are amazing sometimes aren't they. I'm pretty sure that you will blow through the Air Temple with no problem. Just remember to stash the good items, before digging in. You will likely beat the Earth Temple also, high speed can help a lot there. The stairs are your friends! The Mana Temple and D:50 on the other hand might be tough. As for the Archmage, potions of confusion are superior to blindness. Don't fall victom to 'I think I will wait one more round before healing'. If you need to heal, heal! I do think, that a PC's vulnerability to aging attacks, is partially dependant upon thier exp. level. (I'm not sure about that, I'm just going by observation.) If you make it to D:50, you might have big trouble with the age attacks. The balors might corrupt you, but I think you can take them. Put me in the 'fool filter', where I belong! |

As you are a fan of super optimization you should feel forced to use an extended auto pickup and use the auto pick switch shortcut. To pickup something it's not move then pick, it's activate auto pick, move, auto pick, disable auto pick. It's even less key press at the price to not see what you pick but one turn saved per picking. :-p |
