"What does this mean? You want to get N+ so as to get precrowned instead of crowning? Wouldn't it be easier to just kill some beggars or townfolk and drop down to N-?"

I always try to get the amulet of order, you could kill beggars but that amulet is very handy when pickpocketing a lot or trying to get a second precrown/postcrown. I think.

Great job on the writing, you've become some sort of inspiration for me :P After my first but weird victory I thought I would stop playing ADOM for a long time, but the next day I rolled a drakish farmer which is doing pretty well :) I tried to do a lot of the things you did :P btw, whirlwind is excellent compared to a certain tome I got for my precrown. And no chance for a second precrown.

N+: Yes I like to use the amulet for this. Because killing townspeople is EVIL. And then I can become precrowned right after saccing the right amount. Probably no real reason. But Precrown is very important, and also a regular crowning would eliminate any chances of getting an Ultra ending. If that is feasible with a silly troll.

White leather gauntlets sure don't give cold resistance. Odd. Well putting the PV ones right back on, then.

looking at your healing i guess you ar not praticing old routine: kick air, strain leg, boost healing by forcing it to be used nearly all the time?

anyway given your curernt pv it is not so usefull.

p.s. anyway this story inspires to start one of my one.

Soirana: No, didn't do that. He was walking around sick a fair bit, and will do so again soonish. But real reason is because I did not need healing, got like 200 blessed spenseweeds.

Hey, Big Girl!
"...huh?...you finished yet?"
Yes, I belive we have enough herbs to get another gift from the gods.
"...why would we need that? This sling is so ...ROCKing.."
A-haha. Yes very funny. However, don't you like to stand next to the monsters, so you can feel and smell their fear, when you dispatch them?
"Of course, but this spear works too. And it is so adamantiumally shiny, too"
Well, anyway, we have the dough, lets get busy.

So thousands of turns later I believe I have enough for at least one precrowning. No need to gather enough for the second yet, because I need 80000 exp to get level 14. I'll see what I get first. Head up again, towards the puppy cave. I visit the barbarian and get the 20-monster kill quest. A pack of dogs provides me with 7-8 dead dogs. But we consider courage a conveniance skill, and not game-winning, so if we have little time, we might just forget it.
"Speak for yourself, coward human, we Trolls live after the warrior code, and courage is our life. We always fight outnumbered and surrounded"
Well, I still do my best to fight monsters one at a time in corridors. As much for conveniance as for actual danger.

We come to the puppy cave, again. Have to sac all my 130 blessed stomofillia along with 200 uncursed (read a scroll of uncursing to get all cursed ones up to unc.) Absolutely close, wear amulet for a while, hit N+ and pray.

"Whats that? I don't know how to use one of those..."
Hmm. It appears to be a jet-black battle axe.
"But I only know how to use spears!"
I do think that this item will look good on you. See the colours match your black hair!
"Oh, I hadn't thought of that. Well guess that is it, then."

About weapons, slaying property really...slays. This is a combined humanoid and demon slayer. Humanoid is really really good. Demons is usually quite good, but somewhat less needed when I already slay humanoids (I think elemental temple grues might be the only demons that are not humanoid. And ghosts and spectres are the only undead that are not humanoid too. I think.) But I have picked up some undead slaying ammo, and I do have a cloak of invisibility to deal with Trolls

Cursing is not good, but I feel it is balanced by having luck and fate smiles. I remember playing through a friday 13th challenge game, in which I was cursed, without luck/fate the whole game. And I still won. I think.

Anyway this weapon is the end-game killer, all we could ever need and hope for. I vote on with the game, no more precrowns. I might gather 600 more herbs (and also 80000 exp without progressing in the game) and get nothinh better than a crappy weapon. Or a certain tome. As much as we would like a ring, some bracers, an amulet, we shall manage without.

We lost a lot of DV, by spear skill and by the fact that axe is [-4,+1]. We are past the PV stage now. I bless a scroll of defense, and read it while wearing my boots. [-2,+2] --> [0,+2], and I will improve this whenever I can. Also bone bracers (toughness) are good for using scrolls, rest can probably be smithed. Speaking of smithing, we decide to drag the ant-ore out of the cave, as we will likely not be returning here.
"Yes I am getting bored with killing these easy monsters. Give me a challenge!"
I actually fear that the challenge might be hard to give her, because with humanoid slaying and 26/31 we need to move a lot further to get a true challenge. But we shall see. We have a few locations to visit first.

First off to terinyo, to sell off unneeded herbs and acquire swimming and pet our dog Tara some more (10 gold to whoever finds out why I keep saving it). Then Lawin...to buy training in climbing and trapping. Then Pyramid. Since getting that strange papyrus scroll, Klawina finally put two and two together, and decuced that mabye the impassable pyramid we saw earlier is in fact the one referred to in this message. So she is nagging me to go there, meet Rehetep, and see if he can die like a man. Again. I reluctantly agree. We meet two hydras on the way and exercice our axe-skills on them.

The Pyramid itself is done in my fastest way: Collect pickaxe and climbing set, then use the teleport trap to reach the up-stairs. There is a disappointing turnout in Rehetep's room, giant slug and stone statue were the strongest monsters. Rehetep learns to behave more courteous to women, and we wear his skin around our body. Actually we don't, Klawing insists it makes her look ugly. I try not to make an obvious snick remark back, because she learnt to use her new axe rather fast.

We head towards the bug temple, on the way walking on some mountain squares. Slip and fall....takes 71 hps away, and some stuff, but annoyingly enough a wand of paralyzation. So we bless the climbing set... But the bug temple works just fine, I shoot and run the greater claw bugs.
"Let me fight one, this running is cowardly"
Okay, theres one. It is hurt and seriously wounded
"Okay, take that..*swish*. Ouchx3. *swish*. Ouchx2 OUCH! *THUNK* RARRGH GOTCHA!"
Yes very good. And now we take the rest with the bow, you are bleeding all over the place and are 74% dead...

We agree that is was the weapon's unwieldy nature that made her miss, and so agree to use the bow. Eat about 8-9 corpses, so Willpower is utterly back to 1. But I have 118 speed natural now. Decide that is enough. Oh and dex also shot up to 33. I attract the attention of some killer bugs, and find out that I can barely dent them with my bow. I decide to come back later, despite Klawina's accusations of cowardice. I decide to head down Cavern of Chaos till dwarftown and get the first quest, along with the graveyard one. I will then visit the TotHK and see what awaits there. While dipping my climbing set in holy water, I notice that we somehow have found a potion of cure corruption. Heading down to:

D:8
Strange smell - and it's not coming from Klawina. Also buzzing sounds. Find and kick the beehive, and are happy enough to find gelee royal along with beewax. Pick up SI.

D:9
Dwarven cavern. Shop holds...nothing much. Elder wants me to slay a kobold to prove my valor. Klawina tries to point out that we have already killed 64 of them, and that we are now a lot better equipped than when we killed most of them, but the elder (who is looking rather afraid at Klawina) is adamant. I think he wanted some rare, dangerous monster, but feared K's reaction if she had to look for it for too long. We eat a displacer beast corpse and suddenly find ourselves face to face with a mystic. He just hands over some scrolls and disappears. I pay the trainer 10000 and drink two potions of potential learning. I could have done it all with crystals of knowledge, but they aren't that easy to find, so I'm happy to spend that little gold for now. Should take learning from 9 to 12-13 I should think. On the way out I harvest some herbs (morgia needed, and some stomofillia for food). Then off to

UC:1
Or TotHK:1. Splashing sound (or sounds, I did not notice). Acid trap or pool? I check it out. Must have been a trap.

UC:2
See downstairs right away, but explore. A gorgon is waiting right behind a door. But I am able to retreat behind Klawina, and then she shoots it dead with her bow. A lightning lizard takes out a short bow and some arrows and leaves no corpse. Grmph.

UC:3
The first cavernous level. Find and slay a kobold, almost by accident, thus completing our first quest. Reach level 14 a short while later.

UC:4
A river runs through it. Reminding me that I did not bring any logs for the piranah lake down here. Head back out...and back in. See a ghost lord, but just wear the cloak of invisibility. Then I meet a dwarven chaos knight...and he drops a plate mail, metal cap and a long sword. Or rather, they are stripped off his very dead humanoid corpse. Whew. Here I was worried about having too low armor. Eternium [0,+4] cap and E.[-1,+13] plate.

UC:5
Nothing much. Shoot a ghost lord.

UCBT:
The toooomb. Let's hope 4 logs are enough, with out new 12 learning.
...
"What are you complaining about? There is your bridge!"
Oh, its very nice. And I like the decor. But did you have to use 4 full logs on it? Because it is not long enough to take us to that door
"I am not building any common, shodden, ugly bridges. If you can't go across in style, go somewhere else"
But we really want to go there. There is actually a ring in there
"Is it shiny?"
Yes, made from a very shiny metal indeed. Also it is probably mind-bogginly expensive.
"Allright, lets get another log then."
We actually need to go two more times, but in the end the bridge is a fine piece of work. I have not the heart to tell Klawie that she and one skeletal king are the only ones who will cross it.

The skeletal king...? Oh yeah, he is humanoid. Do the math. We pick up and wear the nice little ring. Also we are now level 15. Put some skill into mining and gemology.

On the way out another dwarven chaos knight is kind enough to donate a pickaxe to the noble home-tunneling fund.

On my way to the graveyard I remember to finish off darkforge. So I remedy that by utterly wiping it out. Steel golems are humanoid, their loss. I am about to comment on the crapfulness of the armors and weapons, when I suddenly spot a battle axe of penetration. Well. Good to have.

I regard Kherab, the artificer a long while. I know what he carries...and we want it. Or at least I do.
Lets attack and kill that grey dwarf there
"RAARRGH! Hate dwarves, take that"
I have not the heart to tell her that we do not do this for the glory of the fight, but to get an item that involves a lot of boring work later on. Take that - referred to the opening shot with our bow. Exact hit, took him to moderate status right away. However 100 shots later he is still up and running. And regenerated back to full health. So our options are now melee, or retreat. One look at the Troll deep in her battle-frenzy convinces me that our options are, in fact, only melee. We manage a decent hit-run-hit routine, but he can still get in hits. And does. We had 234 hp, but every round would take away 80-ish. Except that he got a crit - and took us down to 96. Whee! Well only one thing to do now, pray. Pray to the RNG not to deal more than 1 crit in any given round. I have enough spenseweed to last ages, only problem is that he can one-round us. But no such luck, we had to waste a teleport charge, but we now have an anvil in our inventory. Niiice.

I decide to drink from a pool, till I either lose luck or fate, or gain curse/doom.
1. lose poison resistance
2. gain poison resistance
3. invisible
4. Aging. I jump past grown-up, and feel middle-aged.
So I decide to stop there.
I check my inventory for any potions of visibility, longevity and youth, but see none. I do see a potions of education. So I quaff it...
Ventriloquism. Hm. Well just mabye I shall put it to use, for once. Fortunately invisibility wears off, and I am free to finish the arena later on. Now for the graveyard.

Well, come on then...
"Graveyard sounds so boring. Besides, I'm too tired for a graveyard shift right now. Tell these voyeurs to come back tomorrow."

Guess you have it there. Enough excitement for one day. Join us tomorrow, for the assault on Graveyard, where we also find a very great ring with the power to summon a powerful spirit who can...

"And stop your wild dreaming right there!"

Great find with the sling, too bad slaying ammo is so rare for those, so training up xbows is a good idea too.

What are you hoping for with your next precrowning and then crowning?

My gods, poor Klawina, please don't drag her through another precrown! Smithing's going to take long enough...
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"
Which direction? (123456789) 4
Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.

I'll update later today (at work now)...

...but I have lost all chance of precrowns, I mean SI is generated, two artifacts from pyramid are, crown of science from darkforge, Ring of the High kings.

I was so pleased with the precrown that I (we) decided not to.

And in fact, anything I could get from crowning would be useless, I fear. Except the immunity.

Yeah, Shirt of the Saints. Nature's friend is too crappy a shield to even comprehend. Hammer of the gods at least grants shock immunity.

Shirt of the saints - +searching and +2 learning (I have all the rest) and having to wear a [8,4] item. Hm. My eternium plate mail will be smithed better than that, I should think. And Troll girls really like the shine of eternium in the morning...

Anyway, we were on our way to the graveyard, when suddenly a Djinn appears, and grants us
"Hey, tell them what happens, not your sick wet dreams. Here is the Graveyard, what do we do? Apart from kill them all?"
Oh, you'll see. My dream might yet come true...

Graveyard is almost too easy. We (SHE) decide to dig up the graves with treasure to spice things up. So we (*I*) decide to put on the ancient mummy wrappings, ugly as they are, because they will save us from certain death if we dig up an emperor...On the surface we find a gray dagger. Also find book of some sort, and some never-before-seen potions. Youth suddenly became high on my list. I read a scroll of ID after finishing top level, and it turns out the potions were just boost appearance and the like. However I do notice that I have a certain "crown of leadership, [+2,+7] (+18 cha) in my inventory. Must be from a grave digup. DV and PV on it is good at this point, but I could probably smith something up better. (While the Troll sleeps). See invisibility is veeery useful, though. And Klawina will appreciate the charisma, even if noone else will. I don't know if double confusion resistance is figured into the game (got from axe too) but anyway it is good to have backup conf. resist in case I forget and remove my axe for any reason. So I am pretty happy with this find, and the Troll is properly ecstatic.

Nonnak manages to summon one set of nasties ("Hah, only nasty down here is me"), but dies very fast after that. I consider using holy water on Griffs grave but I have only 1 potion right now, so we 2-hit kill him instead. Humanoid slaying - is like innate *headshot*. Every time.

Our next mission is obviously - finishing up some dwarf quests. I shall do 1,2,3,4 for now, and then dig up the ogre cave, collect gems and ore, and do some smithing. Have to lure the smith off-level for that, cuz I need/want him alive to fix my pickaxes as they break. If I should meet any grey or ochre jellies I shall attack them a bit with my pickaxes - it's cheaper to fix a (-8, 1d6 - 8) pickaxe than a brutal one of devastation...so I can rather spend money on stats. Can get myself starved down enough to gain Str from ogres too. With my aging from pool, I have 28 natural ST. -2 for sickness gives 26, and therefore I can starve down to 13. Which should let me gain from ogres up to 16 (halved) easy. Then I have a few giant corpses cooked and waiting, to go to 18 easy. I think both of these corpses CAN take you higher, but with increasingly worse chance. Giants up to 20 is not too hard, though. And that should work out to 39 or 41 ST, enough for me.
"One can never have enough Strength! All that Trolls need"
Well, you will probably get more later on from potions and such.

But lets head down ...

Dwarftown:
*You have freed Griffs spirit, and you also killed a kobold. I shall now ID your inventory. And take some potions and wands.*
"RARGH idiot human, whyever did we have to read that ID scroll when you knew he would ID our stuff?"
Touché. I must remember that we are now dealing with a pretty smart middle-aged Troll lady. Not so easily tricked, especially on matters economical.
"Now those wimpy dwarves want to see what is beyond that animated forest... Why don't they just go temselves?"
Obviously afraid. But I still think that 2-3 of those blue dwarves might push through...but guess they are waiting here, in case of demon attack or something...
"Hah demon attack my..."
Before we head downstairs we manage to bump the dwarven smith, glod, out of his room. We would switch positions untill he was in the doorway, then teleport to his other side and quickly switch places again. It took 5 tries with teleport wand (he moved before we landed) but the 6th time we were able to make the switch. After that it was just a matter of switching him, he did not run to his home then.
"Aha, I get it! Now he is alone, and we can kill him!"
You like shiny stones, don't you?
"Is the pope a Roman Catholic?"
Right. Well. This particular dwarf can fix your broken pickaxes, so we can dig for as long as we like!
"...okay he can live. For now"
So we head on..

D:10
A certain tension. A backup climbing set. A room of humanoid orcs. Ex-orcs. I find a dark room, and decide to book-cast light (learnt it from a wand of wonder) a few times. Should train literacy and mabye mana too. I consider taking the book-casting talents. But of course any level is faaar in the future. A Troll berserker leaves a corpse...
"RARGH! I feel ... more Trollish"
I doubt that...say, you don't have any qualms about eating your own kind, do you?
"Own kind....he was from a different tribe. And had all red skin, too. No worry, my blood will heal faster now"
Yet the potions of Troll blood don't work. Where is the logic?
"See this axe? It being a jet-black battle axe, the most powerful one-hand axe in the world, and can lop your head straight off, you gotta ask yourself one question. Do you want to agrue with me? Well do ya, human?"
So we move on...We also find a chaotic altar, but decide we do not need it at all, so move on...

D:11
Potion of toughness. Niiice.

D:12
Nothing much

D:13
Clicking of small feet...we decide not to spend long here, because it is a corrupting level. Just go downstairs for now.

D:14
"How EXCITING!"
Yes, time to find, and murder/death/kill them all. Lets hope for that ring we are waiting for...pickpocket them too, while we are at it.
"Why pickpocket? Surely you can clean out their pockets after I have slain them?"
Actually, while that sounds very logical, in reality the simple act of pickpocketing creates a link to the spirit plane, and small objects of value are conveyed to our material plane, to appear in the pocket of the targetted creature. Which is why you never would have found the item if you hadn't tried to...to... Klawina?

I follow the sound of fighting and take up my place behind her, as she lays low a pack of undead. Good this is too low danger level for major undead...we also pick up some tension on the level. And it is not because K is having some menopause issues either.
"Make me young again, or die screaming, human"
We see an altar...I think it looks neutral, but as I drop a potion of water a flock of rats appear. Hmmmm. Damn my eyesight. No harm done, though. I leave this one, too. Tension room of goblins fail to donate any nice rings, and die horribly as a result. In fact, terriby unexciting items are found on the level. We head down in disgust to..

DH:1
"Another boring level"
Lets not jump to conclusions. Mabye we can find a worthy opponent here. And we set out to clear the whole level. We again feel some tension but bravely head on. A mixed T-room now would be at least interesting. See downstairs, but explore on. Then we get the devils' hooves corruption. Remind me not to make any nasty remarks and earn a hoof in my nuts later...we explore further. We are filled with a chilling terror.
"I'm not afraid"
You should be, those ghosts are about the only thing that can kill you at this point. We put on our cloak of invisibility and train our bow-skill a little more. Nothing else of interest, though.

DH:2
Nothing here.

D:16
"Completed our quest? THAT was the quest? That was why the dwarves were afraid?"
Well. You have gotten rather...strong in the way of the ...axe. That frost giant berserker is normally a powerful foe.
"Oh, yeah, sarcasm again. Come on, he hit me for ...4 hps"
Well, a week ago it would have been 43. But we shall find some challenges for you yet. Lets explore some more before we head back up. And we do...only to see a white figure surrounded by chaos servants. We slay the servants but decide to wait a bit before approaching the ugly-looking white guy. Back up. We decide to take a small detour around the DH-levels (SHE decides) and are rewarded with a giant corpse, and a somewhat worthy opponent, a Moloch. Worthy meaning it takes us 6 rounds to kill him. We also kill the ants on D:13 and take the ores home.

Dwarftown
Thank you for finding an ...unsafe... passage further down the dungeon. We, however, will stay right here.
"I never doubted you, you co*mpmhm"
I chuck a potion of stun resistance down her throat to distract her, and thank the old dwarf for the wand. Also for the opportunity to kill some ogres...
"OGRES! We hate those guys. Let gooooooo!"
And we do. One of the ogre magi is nice enough to leave a corpse. We have been eating any magical corpses found so far, and Ma is now 19. Not bad, not bad. But now for some unpleasantness.

"You want me to ...WHAT?"
Eat this herb, goes nicely with ogre steak, I am told.
"You don't fool me, I know devil roses makes me sick. But after that you want me to..?"
Remove your axe. It grants +3 Strength
"Stupid, stupid. Leaves me open to attack. And THEN...?"
I already told you, starve yourself to the point of utmost weakness. THEN eat the Cooked Ogres.
"..."
It will make you stronger...
"!"

Finally agreed, we set out. Starvation will of course be facilitated by stomachemptia herbs. I start out with ogre corpses, then later go for the giants. My plan takes us down to ST 11, and the first ogre corpse gives +1 ST. But the next 4 don't, despite starving down to 11 each time. GRMPH. But then I get 2 from the last 5. Not too good, damn Ogres. We know why we hate them. My 3 giant corpses give 2 rises, but eaten at 12 and 13 strength that is expected. Other stats that get lowered this way are Willpower, Learning and Dexterity. I have the Moss of Mexterity. still, but the other two I need supplies to work on.

We then bless one pickaxe, and dig out 40 or so walls in former-ogre cave. A stone giant reminds me that I can find additional ST increases here too. I then go to smith a while, to let the mining and gemology skills gain a little. I will then mine some more, to let the smithing skill catch up. And so forth. Then a bout of stat-gaining mixed in all this, by eating stone giant corpses, morgia and moss, and using crystals of knowledge. A bit more work, again.

Needless to say, the poor brave Troll bravely fell asleep. Only found one gem to keep her interested, but it was a dull brown colour, so, well I guess a time-out was in order.

Too bad, I forgot to get and do quest 4, but that will wait for tomorrow too.

See you tomorrow, when we will become powerful in every respect, and indeed find the last few items we need to really be happy. Like a certain ring.

and as your veiwpoint of gradual decrease in ogre chances... i doubt that at least, although i can't remember much reliable info at the moment.

Hmmm, why didn't you just teleport Glod out of his smithy instead of teleporting yourself? Would've been cheaper in wand charges (I think, don't remember whether he is teleport resistant). Besides that, he sometimes stands in the door all by himself , so with a little patience you can get him out for free (well, except the cost of game turns).

Another "why didn't you" moment -> I think the ogre cave is corrupting, so I never dig it out, preferring to use the safe levels D1 to D9.

Still, this was a very entertaining installment of Klawina's story. Go Klawie! (hopefully she doesn't mind diminutives or I'll have to buy a really strong neck armor ;) )

Ogre corpses don't grant St every time, even at St:1 (about 50% of them gave me an increase, all of them uncursed or blessed), the same goes for Hill giant corpses.
It seems to get harder the more St you have and stops at ~19 for ogres or ~21 for Hill giants.
At least I never got an St increase from Ogres at St:20. And I tried a lot (Ogre armies are fun ;) ).

My experience also comes from ogre armies +ring of weakness.
basically cursed ring/blessed ring//uncursed +girdle of giant strength.
All times chances of increases there the same. bellow 1:3.

and yes, hill giants seems to have gradual decrease of chances. i still prefer warbands of stian giants these ar more reliable.

J. - That was not it.
Why didn't I...well it would have been longer if he got teleported somewhere far. Laziness. I have plenty booze for the wand.
Giants - I will hopefully dig out more as I tunnel the OC. ("the OC, haha")
The OC - I had a theory that OC is not corrupting if dwarftown is generated on D:9. But that it is if it deeper. But that is just what would be logical to me, it probably is another misconception.

ON WITH IT ALREADY

When the Troll sleeps, cowardly humans can make some plans:

Time for some new goals:
* Finish dwarf quest 4.
* Smith our stuff up to acceptable levels. This includes our plate mail, a shield, and a gridle. One should ideally be mithril, other adamantium, and last one eternium.
* Gain stats up to acceptable levels. Will happen in-between smithing and mining.
* Find a Djinni summon ring, to get past Khelevaster. Gremlin-bomb might be only way to accomplish this, sadly. Or I might just push on without him.
* Finish Fire tower to advance further.

Later-game goals:
* Become a magic-user. High learning from crystals and eating of many MA-giving corpses have prepared me for this, but only a wish (or education in) concentration will enable me to be a full-out magi.
* Basically, finish the game. I will not get a crowning anytime soon, so Ultra remains an option, depending on saving Private Khelly, of course.

Okay, those goals set out we can wake up the unlikely heroine.
"I swear, another round of smithing and mining and you get a pickaxe between your ears, and an eternium warhammer in your..."
Easy, now, children might be reading
"Noone is reading now that OoTS is back up again"
...well that is beside the point. Our duty to ourselves, and honor, demands that we press on. I have a nice mission for you - remember the Arena?
"Yes, you made me leave just when I was starting to have fun"
Well you can go back and have all the fun you want now.

So we do just that. On the way up we gather some morgia again. Li-Han-Kay can be a deadly foe, with his lethal ice attacks striking from thin air...however with our 20-20 see Invisible vision, and cold resistance, he proved rather managable. And in fact, he even left a corpse for our hungry Troll to devour. We naturally stayed on, to gather both exp and gold. We are of course overqualified for this, but for low-level characters this is a nice way to gather the aforementioned things. Just as long as one has a way to escape. (Pickled displacer beast corpse, anyone?) We have a slightly interesting fight against a master lich that liked to summon his ghost lord buddies. Toughest opponent was a minotaur mazelord. Some of us were disappointed we didn't see a greater moloch like we fought in our second-to-last incarnation, though. Still, we get 25 000 or so gold, and 70 000 exps, since monsters are all levelled.

Back to *grumph* work. The quest reward gives us a nice chunk of healing potions, making a certain Ancient Chaos Wyrm more feasable. But we are still a bit low in the Hitpoint department, with 235 max. I do know a way to increase this, that does not involve gaining levels either. But it does involve being a passable magic user. And having access to a pet...

"Well get a move on, I am getting seriously bored here"
I liked her better as a stupid and controllable 11-year-old. Must get some youth potions....

However we are out of time. Only 5 paragraphs, but they sure took time. I didn't mention it, but my smithing skill was heinously low, I should have put 2-3 more points in it. At least it should grow faster now (was 10, now 17).

In the words of another hero: Thank you for your cooperation. And please point out to me all stupid decisions ...I let *HER* make. It will only make this more educational.

Klawika would rather slaughter thousands of gremlins than drink from dirty pools or drown in an underwater cave. At least that's what I'm thinking :P

btw, if I'm right then that's disturbing... thinking the same way as a troll o_O.

If you ask me, killing thousands of gremlins is a lot more boring than drinking from pools and venturing about in a dragon cave.

Then again, I can't claim I'm a troll :)

Looting the dragon cave can be deadly... 1 hit kills from water breath are common.

One thing I'd like to ask. Do you bless your axe when you know it will be on for a while? When it autocurses, it does -50% damage to undead and demons, if you bless it, it will do +50%. You probably kill most things in 1 hit, but for the tougher stuff it could save you a lot of grief.

Good luck with smithing, hope you have a lot of (+1 +1) +8 +8 ARMOR afterwards!

Might be a bit premature, but it seems like you have a potential game winner on your hands here.

Nightmare:
Yes, thanks for reminding me to bless my ¤%#¤%" weapon. It does not, in fact, curse itself. It grants cursing to the PC. So if I bless it, it will be for the game (bar cursing from hags or daemons). Don't tell K, she would murder me very dead a few times. Every character is a potential winner... this one has plenty of opportunity to die later on. But it is my best farmer by far. (mer)

Silfir: I cannot safely drain any more pools unless I can find a potion of youth or several of longevity. I think one more pool-aging could cripple or even kill the character. Gremlin-bomb is in fact as much for finding needed potion (like youth) as the ring. If I don't get a ring pretty fast, we shall move on and finish regularly. Quoth ye Troll: "Stupid old bugger, deserved to die, anyway".

But water cave is a good place to look, agreed and thanks.

We can soon see what our lady has to say on that subject...

But first a note on smithing. As mentioned, I started out with skill 10. And THAT is something one does not wish to do, one should get it up to 20-30 when starting out. Reason I did it was of course just forgetting about it, and then suddenly finding me smith-ready with next level far off (200 000 exp, darn trolls). I spent about 10-15 tries on a piece of ore to get the ingot out. It is no real harm, except wasting a lot of time, real-time and game-time. The skill grew slowly at first, but faster eventually, which logically led me to believe that success is a better smithing-trainer that failure, and that starting at 10 is a REAL bore. It was. Generally, smithing skill should grow pretty nice while ORE-ing, but if it is still lowish one probably can spend a few ingots to do basic improvements on stuff you might be using at that moment. Iron or mabye mithril.

It is not too hard to improve items a few basic notches, even with smithing under 100. So I started smithing items when it was 39 or so. Mostly on iron items, as I had a lot of iron ore.

I also did not mention that I had to slip the girl a few zombielaizer-herbs, which made her docile enough to allow this smithing spree.

However, some highlights from our efforts (smithing skill only climbed to 76, I saved most adamantium and eternium ingots)
Medium Mithril shield [+5,+1] -> [+11,+7]
Bracers of speed (+4sp) [0,0] -> [+6,+4]
White dragon gauntlets [+2,+2] -> [+7,+7]
Metal girdle (sadly iron) [0,+1] -> [+8,+5]
Eternium plate mail [-1,+13] -> [+5,+13]
Battle axe of penetration (+1, 1d6+2) -> (+6, 1d6+8)

We are also rewarded with celebrating our 90th game-day still alive in the game, so now let the corruption set in and do us in. Gained the exhale sulphur corruption, but given the nasty odour normally coming from Trolls' mouths, that is no big deal at all. It is a nice way to remove bloated status, a decent acid attack, so one of the good corruptions.

Also Healing and Mining both hit 100 skill. While mining was between 80 and 100 I broke 3 pickaxes (digging out 40% of the OC). I then dug out 60% of D:8, with skill at 100, and no breaks. That level (60% of it) also yielded: 42 iron ore, 18 mithril, 18 adamantium, 17 eternium. Also 7 giant corpses, I estimate 20 live ones were generated. 2 Crystals of knowledge. The job did not take much game-time, high mining skill makes it very fast. I did not sterilize the level, enemies were never a problem (interruption-wise, I mean) and the fights at least gave some bloodsplattering to satisfy K. I also tried to dip 2 rings into blessed potion of exchange, but no luck. We know we can dip 19, but what is the fun in a game with 19 wishes? If our Troll was more talkative at the moment, I think she would argue that HER survival is paramount, but I still got an interest in this. So no more than 3 rings will be dipped. (Amulet of life saving, concentration, find weakness is all I want)

I am still not happy about our learning score (20), as we want to be able to read the cure critical wounds book. I fail on the (in my mind) easier scare monsters, so I decide to postpone our magical dabbling. Make when the Troll is smart enough to take an interest in abstrack thaumaturgical texts...

Hey, wake up, you!
"Zhnph?"
Time to explore some more. One of your fans has informed us of a hidden lair with treasure and adventure!
"..."
Still somewhat groggy from the zombie-state, she followed me up the near-empty D:8-1. I had not the heart to tell her that we were going for a swim, as she has skill 7 in swimming. However we also have a ring of the fish.

HMV
is on the way, and we pop inside for a quickie. A quickie scroll of chaos resistance.

Water cave
*Mortal, do not dare take that!*
"I want this shield, it is so shiny, like my eternium plate mail. Don't worry about HER, I can take that bloated wyrm"
I enjoy a chick-fight as much as the next man, but we don't need it with this smithed-up one. And there are no super-rings here. There is not much here at all. Nothing worth any hassle. Damn it.
"Well, if that ring is so important for you, why don't you just let me kill stuff till we find one?"
...
"Why are you looking at me that way?"
Oh, no reason. At all. I actually have a plan, which will let you slay thousands of monsters while finding all sorts of goodies for me
"Well, what are we waiting for?"
Trust a Troll to get to the heart of the matter.

After informing Blup that his mom will die anytime we feel like it, we towards D:Chaos again. On the way we pop into the fire tower, to see if we can clean out the way to the temple. And generally stay awake...

TF:1
We take off 7lb, bracers of speed, normal metal stuff. I find out that hitroll is good to have, and that clumsy Klawina lacks it when attacking a wandering fire grue. Klawina also reminds me that she is burning up, unless we swap out ring of damage for a fire resist ring (RotHK is best). We see a white dragon scale mail on the floor and scoop it up. I then realize that fire giant kings can, in fact, hit hard through 50 PV. 220 down to 90. So we decide to come back later, also because we were not prepared enough for the Wyrm. Too low hitroll, not enough blessed healing potions, too few max hps. We shall return later.

Down again to dwarftown, we happen to talk to the dwarven elder JUST when a greater daemon happened to attack the town.
"Well, where is he/it, already?"
Patience, patience. We want this ratling here to stay safe, and also that stat-trainer. It will appear shortly.
And it does. To Klaw's extreme frustration, we do not test out the horribleness of smacking a demon/humanoid with a demon/humanoid slaying weapon. We drag it over to the little temple.
"But let me hack it up, already?"
Actually, lets stage an arena contest. Ruun the priest versus Greater Daemon. Round 1, go!
...
Go?
...
We hop around, trying to provoke a fight, but they seem perfectly happy around each other. Normally I would first have daemon kill the smith for anvil if I lack one, but now I just wanted priest dead so I could potentially convert the altar to Lawful if I wanted to. Priest is very useless after you know the cure- potions. In the end I am unable to control the female, and the greater daemon learns that there is a plane of greater pain than the nether realms. Right between his eyes, that is.
*Congratulations, once again you saved our bacons. Take this, please*
"Ah, heavy! Must be a good weapon"
...
"Not too bad dice. What does it slay?"
Nothing, really.
"Well, what are its hidden powers?"
...none I know of...
"Well, it should protect us from magicks, then?"
...mabye stunning...
"Stunning? I never get stunned. Why would we ever exchange our weapon for this?"
Well, for a newish rookie it might have been good. He obviously did not recognizethe power of your weapon, or he wouldn't have offered us that ridiculus thing. Still it might have a use...
"Use, hah. I might just as well give it away to the first and best ratling I find"
...yes, precicely. How did you know?
"So what now?"
Oh wait, is THAT the time?
"So what, time schmime. I'm ready to kill more, the Fire Giant King merely surprised me, is all"
Well, good sport, soldier, but my bed is beconing mightily now, so see you tomorrow, then.
"What am I supposed to do? Sleep here amongs filthy dwarves like a rat?"
Go down to the ogre cave meanwhile. Tomorrow you shall slay 1000 creatures, I promise
"Sounds better. Just be prepared if you should fail. Be prepared to die, that is. Make a will, that sort."

Another short read, again. This time it took a long time, like last time, I guess, so my time ran out.
Tomorrow I have better time, and we might see some action, as the Trollish lady is becoming increasingly frustrated with cowardly humans.

Be well.

On the plus side, those fire giant kings leave nice corpses that can bring your strength up even more. Once your HP gets higher, and if you have a backup blessed fireproof blanket or two, it might be worth screwing around in their for the corpses of giants and dragons, and their loot. I usually get some pretty good items in there. Maybe you'll get an AoLS for Khelly.

Hi, nice story M. Started my own trollish farmer and is going quite nice: found RoDS in watercave and another one in shop below HMV. I am lvl 18 and have smithed up some items so my normal tactics are at 112/60. I am going for the ToEF (without icerings) and I'm wondering if my red dragon-hide gauntlets will burn? They are resistant against fire, but they are made of iron. Also, will my damagering burn? It is made of adamantium and should not burn.. Have gotten Robes of Resistance and Protector, but will sadly have to replace my spear of penetration with an ordinary eternium spear when going for the tower.

Anyway, anyone know about my gauntlets and ring?

Sulan: Red gauntlets should definately burn, yes. Not logically, but they will. Rings will never burn, because you WILL wear your elemental gauntlets over them :).

You *must* make sure you have a way to kill the wyrm. Regular eternium spear might not be good enough. Depends on ST, though. Consider using webbing wands, paralyzation wands to get an edge. Also dragon slaying ammo might be a good way for you. Let the bow and arrows burn, fire off 4-5 and it should die. We farmers actually have archery, so... might use it.

Bunny: Did I rustproof? *checking*. Hm nope. And I have no oil of rustproofing. I should have. I guess I sold it to the black market for safekeeping. Or lost it in a trap. Luckily there are no rivers in D: so far. If they rust I can always take them off and later smith the rust away. If K will ever let me smith again, of course.

Update ...in progress. And let me again remind you that you might suddenly read her obituary, because nothing is sure at this point. She really IS bugging me to rush through things. Stupid Troll.

No ring can burn or melt if you wear the elemental gauntlets. Actually, why on earth aren't you already using the elemental gauntlets? They grant fire resistance just like your red dragon-hide gauntlets, plus ice, acid and lightning! And they provide 100% protection for the rings you wear!

EDIT: Just realized what you wrote about smithing. Well, if your smithed up gauntlets are made of iron, they'll probably melt, so use the elemental gauntlets instead.

I don't think there are any gauntlets beside the elemental gauntlets and Ironfist that can't melt or burn.

EDIT2: Damn ninja. :)

Aight, thank you. I will then not wear my gauntlets. Going for the bows, yes. Have 14 arrows and 3 longbows of accuracy, so hopefully they won't all burn. Hopefully I'll take my first farmer to the top. And by trying to get to my 10th victory anniversary, I will step it up one notch and start going for ultra-endings. No more boring normal endings, I want to meet the big fellas!
