Hi. It's my most promising character ever :-) Candy, the (female) elven weaponsmith met the Cat Lord!!! The SOB is tough! I need advice : shall I try to fight him, or shall I go further trying to level up a little and come back later? Any advice on how to fight him?

I'm level 30 with average stats, armed with Rolf's companion, proficiency at level 9, +50, 3d6+28. My DV/PV is 99/60 at normal. I also have a whip of the snake, but I'm not very apt with it (level 3). I own a pair of 7 leagues boots but no extraordinary equipement besides that. It's a pity I can't see the invisible. And I don't have an AoLS either!

I killed a total of 16 cats, is that a lot? I never cared about them simply because I never made it that far before :-P

So, any advice?

without seeing invisible i would say avoid him if it's possible. i mean blessed scroll of magic map and wand of diging straight to downstairs.

and wahat means average stats? acording to my playstyle lv30 char is 40+ in main stats. on average... happens better.

Cat lord. He is tough. My first char to meet him, took 200+ damage in 1 round, never got him. My next, an archer, killed him with humanoid arrows. My priest, lots of acid bolt +loads of healing =kill. However, my ranger had one of toughest Catlords. He zapped some poison, drank ALOT of potions and fought him. Cat lord ran away and was killed by poison. Morale, get ALOT of potions and soften him up. Wands of paralization+posion help. Also, if you've killed that many try not to melee him if you want to live. You've been to casino right? And got all the stuff, right? So, you should have lots of ammo/wands. Also, speed is very important. I've had chars with blessed SLB not able to outrun him.

Taz: If the char is a promising one I'd recommend going on and attempting to kill the cat lord. In my current char's game I decided from the beginning not to bother trying to get that ring and just indiscriminatedly killed any feline getting in my way. Killing the cat lord wasn't that bad with webs, poison, arrows and ball spells and the char got some 3 levels.

my advice: fear the cat lord!, he kills. if you have to fight him use web, if you have a big iceball spell you can use web+iceball because ice wont burn the web, thats nice, or use web and slaying arrows.

Remember that the cat lord is humanoid, so humanoid slaying ammo will work. You can get see invisible from the Ancient Mummy Wrapping, can't you?

Ok, thanks a lot! I forgot about the Ancient Mummy Wrapping, it will be easier with it. That and humanoid slaying ammo (I got some). Yes, I looted the Casino :-) I have wands aplenty, but not many spells. Wands should suffice, though. And speed, I have to remember speed ... I may switch rings and pendant of potection for ones of speed.

My only problem right now is that I'm kinda trapped in the level BELOW the Cat Lord :-P I sort of outrun him by wounding him and going down while he healed. I must find a way to go back, but I think I'll do the Air Temple before...

And by average stats, I mean exactly that, average stats :-D My strength is at 45, but other stats are lower, more around 25-30.

I'm pretty proud my character survived two rounds of hand-to-hand combat! That's two attempt before giving up, that is.

Actually, many of my chars in real fights couldn't beat him. But, when he gets half-wounded (for me anyway) he runs away. So, I let him get a few spaces away, shoot him, bring him back, he runs again and repeat. Webs will help too.

I don't have those bolts ... neither do I have acid or frost balls. I'll have to relay on humanoid slaying ammo. I don't have time to play that often, so I'ms till at the same point. Maybe tonight I'll give a try. I'll let you know wath happended, whatever.

Finally, since I was already there, I decided to go further down and deal with the Cat Lord later. I went till the Earth templs. Ouch! Earth elementals hurt! I'll take them slowly, Do they see the invisible? On my way, I'll have to be extra carefull not to kill more cats :-)

BTW, I do have another game and this character was only level 24. He also met the Cat Lord yesterday. I snuffed him with a combinaison of wand of lightning and humanoid slaying ammos. Quite easy even with the 20 cats he killed on his way adventuring! And he did go up 3 levels! So, I'm really questionning myself if it's worth the trouble to avoid killing cats, or is it more like and aditionnal challenge when you finished and mostly master the game?

and i just remember one char who killed exactly one cat. cat lord was nonhostile, no bonus also. so i've killed him just for experiance.

I just killed him with a hurthling wizard having killed more than 20 cats. He was extremely tough imo. The only way I got him was by zapping a wand of paralyzation (takes 2 or 3 tries), then hitting him as hard as I can. Got him eventually.

Adhering to the principles of the Cat Lord definitely is worth it. The Ring of the Master Cat is an enormously powerful bonus.

Note that the difficulty of the Cat Lord quest in itself is dependent on your class. Wizards tend to have plenty of spells that help them escape the cats: Teleportation, Invisibility, Slow Monster and the like. For them, the Cat Lord is also harder to kill since they have less HP, so even if they use their powerful ball spells, they'd have to let the cat lord take them on in melee and would be relatively quickly slain.

So I'd advise to at least try to fulfill the Cat Lord quest if you're a spellcaster. For early game characters, cave tigers or lions can prove difficult opponents that can't be ignored slashing at them forever, so they could be forced to kill the cat... Well, if you do have to kill the Cat Lord, the XP is also nice.

I think starting from the midgame, XP becomes less important than superior equipment, stat potions or training or skills or spells. So I'd definitely prefer the ring.

I see. Thanks for the insight. I'll give a try at the Cat Lord quest on my next game. I don't often play spellcaster, though, I'm not very good with them. I tend to melee too many monsters for fear of exhausting my spells reserve, thus always dying full of spells!

I guess that this quest would be ludicriously easy for a druid. That gimme an idea...

If I'm correct, Monks gain the ability to :s with hostile monsters. As soon as this is the case, they would have no problems as well.

i think it was beastfighters, and by the time you get that class skill, avoiding cats (or just ignoring them) shouldnt be much of a problem.

Monks get that ability too, seven levels earlier. :P

But you're right, that ability comes much too late to be that helpful in avoiding cats. BUT monks can kick down walls at Lvl 13 already, and thus will never be stopped by a feline in a hallway.

While we're at it, bards also have their work cut out for them. Just play the music or order one of your pets to kill the wretched feline. Likewise, necromancers can order their slaves to kill 'em. If a farmer manages to keep his dog, he can let it kill cats for him too, but I wouldn't rely on this to work.

Theoretically, a drakeling has the music skill as well, but won't gain enough skill points early to help them tame the cat.

There's still the problem of arena-fighting gladiator cats. Without teleportation or a potion of exchange, you'll have to use extreme tactics. Create a trap (careful - it should be a teleport trap in all cases) or create an alarm trap and some monsters capable of killing the cat.

Alternately, if you're feeling especially wicked, throw a potion of raw chaos at the cat and kill the newly-formed writhing mass of primal chaos.

Strange that the cat lord doesn't react to his brethren being transformed into terrible abominations, but gets all picky if you just kill them a little bit...

Agreed on the last part, Silfir. The Cat Lord doesn't bear that you maim or sacrifice cats to your god, but disregard it when you happen to turn one into a PWoC, or even have step on a stoneblock trap you just created. That's strange :-)

There are all good advice. I will definitivly give it a try. I don't know how it will be, since I tend to play random race of a random class and see what can survive (does anyone ever finished the game with a dark elf thief?)!

Actually, if you create traps that kill cats, the cat lord is supposed to become angry. But this may be buggy and simply not true for all traps.

Usually with drakelings and priests I try to get a few points into Music early on so that I can take good care of kitties. Seven league boots, or other ways of increasing speed, are quite handy so that you can outrun them, or at least lure them into a room and run out the door and close it (since cats can't open doors, in case you haven't noticed). Wands of webbing (or the spell) can also help. If you're feeling especially adventurous you can try and get the cat on one side of you and a bolt-breathing creature on the other side (dragons, acid slugs, fire lizards etc). One other method, though it really is incredibly risky, is to try getting the cat to a very injured state so it panics and runs away. Only something I resort to in the most desperate of circumstances...
